Awesome stereo sound

If you're looking for hi-fi sound from a simple stereo setup, the Onkyo TX-8220 is a great choice. Its discrete amplifiers, massive transformer, and customized capacitors deliver ample power with low distortion to up to two pairs of speakers.

Connect up to five audio components, and take advantage of built-in Bluetooth to stream music wirelessly from your compatible mobile device. The receiver remembers up to eight Bluetooth-enabled devices, so family and friends can share their music too.

Music in different rooms

Playback from such a capable music receiver shouldn't be confined to just one room, so the TX-8220 gives you the ability to spread your music through different parts of the house. A/B speaker connections mean you can add a second pair of speakers in another room or outdoor area. Or use the line out connection to connect a power amp and speakers in a different room.

Features

High-Current Discrete Amplification: The Onkyo TX-8220 stereo receiver utilizes high-current discrete amplifiers, a massive EI transformer, and customized capacitors to deliver ample driving power with low distortion. Onkyo's high-current low-impedance WRAT design uses a massive EI transformer to drive your speakers accurately, even under heavy loads. High current amplification grips the speaker cones for more accurate control, restoring vitality and detail to music. Non-phase-shift circuitry, meanwhile, clearly focuses the audio image.

192kHz/24-Bit DAC (PCM1754): The Onkyo TX-8220 stereo receiver utilizes a 192kHz/24-Bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC) from Texas Instruments (TI) for excellent signal-to-noise (S/N) and low-noise performance - so your music sounds clear, full of detail, and natural.

Tone Controls + Direct Mode: Bass (100Hz), Treble (10kHz), and Balance controls are useful for adjusting the tone characteristics of your music for satisfying the response with practically any type of speaker. These carefully designed tone circuits let you personalize sound to your taste with no perceived loss in audio quality. You can also select Direct mode, which bypasses the Tone control circuits for the purest sound possible as the artist intended.

Analog (Including Phono) & Digital Inputs: The Onkyo TX-8220 stereo receiver is outfitted with both analog & digital audio inputs. There are five stereo RCA analog audio inputs (including a MM Phono input with ground terminal). There are two digital audio inputs - one optical (toslink) digital input and one coaxial (RCA) digital input. The digital inputs support 2ch PCM only (not compatible with  Dolby Digital/DTS or other multichannel audio formats).

Bluetooth Audio Streaming: Built-in Bluetooth 4.2 with support for A2DP allows you to wirelessly stream your music library, music apps, podcasts, audiobooks, and other audio content on your Bluetooth source device (such as your smartphone, tablet, or laptop) to the Onkyo TX-8220 stereo receiver. The unit supports SBC and AAC Bluetooth audio codecs. You'll continue to use your Bluetooth source device to control playback and search functions, as well as view song/artist information. You can pair up to 8 devices, but only one can be connected and played back at a time. Once paired, the TX-8220 will automatically connect with the last device connected when in range (approximately 32'). You can also set the receiver to automatically switch to the Bluetooth source input when a wireless Bluetooth connection is made.

AM/FM Tuner: With the built-in tuner you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. You can store your favorite stations as presets for quick selection. You can store a combination of up to 40 of your favorite FM/AM radio stations as presets. You can even register a custom name (up to 8 characters) for each preset.

A/B Speaker Outputs: The TX-8220 features two sets of binding-post speaker terminals enabling connection of two pairs of speakers. The receiver is designed to drive either a single pair of speakers rated at 4-16, or two pairs of 8-16 speakers, allowing you to enjoy the same audio source in two rooms at once, or to easily switch between two sets of speakers. The binding-post terminals will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin-connectors, and banana plugs (single only).

Line-Level Out & Sub Pre-Out:  The Onkyo TX-8220 is equipped with a stereo RCA line-level output for connecting a recording device. The stereo RCA line-level output is Fixed (not variable). It also features a mono-RCA subwoofer pre-out for connecting a powered subwoofer. The subwoofer pre-out is full-range, so you will need a powered sub with a built-in low pass crossover.

Headphone Jack: A front-panel 1/4" headphone jack allows you to connect a set of  headphones for private listening. Once a set of headphones are connected, the stereo receiver's A/B speaker outputs are disabled.

Remote Control: The Onkyo TX-8220 comes with an IR remote for wireless operation of the stereo receiver. The remote is not designed to operate other audio equipment and will not control connected Bluetooth source devices.

Front-Panel LCD: The Onkyo receiver features a front-panel LCD that indicates Source Input, Station Number, Volume Level, and Menu Selection. The front-panel LCD will not display song/artist/album info from connected Bluetooth source devices. You can adjust the brightness of the display in 3-steps. There is no on-screen menu.

Sleep Timer & Auto Standby: You can set the receiver to enter Standby mode automatically when the specified time (10-90 minutes) elapses. The stereo receiver can also be set to automatically enter Standby mode after 20 minutes of inactivity without any audio input signal.

Q
Does it have a "loudness button" or "bass boost" button?
david  Feb 02, 2024
1 answer
A
Greetings David. Thank you for your question. The Onkyo TX-8220 does not have a loudness, or a bass boost button. It does however have bass and treble controls on the front panel.

Q
Can the Onkyo TX-8220 be paired with a set of KRK Rokit active speakers by using the line-out under the pre-out ?
anthony  Dec 13, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Anthony. Thank you for your question. Line out is a bit different than preamp out. The signal is fixed, because its normally used for a recording device. You can use it to your powered speakers, but because it is fixed, you would have to control the volume of your powered speakers, on the powered speakers.

Q
Can i plug in a bluetooth transmitter into the output jacks so i can play the same music on an outdoor stereo?
rocknwilly  Nov 05, 2023
1 answer
A
This would be possible. Keep in mind that Bluetooth can have potential latency issues, meaning that the music send to the outdoor stereo may be slightly delayed.

Q
Hello. I have a single pair of 6 ohm speakers. Will these work with this receiver?
dmitry  Jun 23, 2023

A
This amplifier is compatible with speakers rated between 4 - 8 ohms. Your 6-ohm speakers should work nicely with the TX-8220.

Q
Will this receiver support my old turntable from the 70s - a TEAC TN-400?
gregg  Jun 17, 2023
1 answer
A
This receiver should have no issues supporting your classic TEAC turntable. The only situation in which this wouldn't work would be if your turntable were equipped with a moving coil cartridge.

Q
Q about power output: if 2 pairs of speakers are in use is the total signal cut in half to each speaker compared to if just 1 pair is in use? Not sure what the 45 W refers to, and some other unist specify this halving of power occurs when 2 speaker pairs used
jeffrey  Jun 02, 2023
1 answer
A
When connecting two sets of speakers, output power is split between the speakers. However, connecting two sets of speakers also means that the impedance presented to the amplifier is lower, which usually means that the amplifier will output a little more power. Onkyo does not provide an output power rating at lower impedances for the TX-8220.

jeffrey  Jun 02, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Jeffrey, and thank you for your question. Amplifiers in most cases will put out more power with less resistance. One pair of 8 ohm speakers would generate 45 watts to each of 2 speakers. When you run A and B each speakers the 8 ohm resistance changes to 4 ohms. The amp puts put more power because the resistance is lower. They do not list a 4 ohm rating in their specs, but it would be more like 90 watts, then divide that by 2 pair, and your back at the 45 watts each. What will happen though on the downside is the amp will put out more distortion at 4 ohms then it does at 8.

What size banana plugs does this use? I've read reviews on the Crutchfield brand plugs reviews that the do not fit Onkyo. Thanks
william d  May 20, 2023
1 answer
A
This Onkyo TX-8220 uses a standard size banana plug, Bill. Our Crutchfield banana plugs in the link below are an excellent option, and these are a tight fit the first time being used. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_007BPR/Crutchfield-Banana-Connectors-1-pair.html

Q
I recently purchased a pair of JBL Stage A130 bookshelf speakers from Crutchfield. Will my Onkyo TX-8220 receiver work well with them?
edward  May 15, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Edward, and thank you for your question. Yes, the Onkyo TX-8220 would work well with your JBLs, but the JBLs have a power range, lower, and higher. The closer you can get to that higher range is where you get the best sound, and best frequency reproduction. Not just the most volume. The range on the A130s are 20-125 watts, so the Onlyo would be closer to that lower end, but still work. If it were me, I would like to put in something with closer to 100 watts. Of course that will raise the cost of the receiver as well. If this will, be your primary listening set up, you will be more happy with more clean power.

Q
Do you have a diagram on how to connect my Onkyo TX8220 with Onkyo EQ-101?
edgar  May 15, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Edgar, and thank you for your question. We are not going to have such diagram, but in order to connect an EQ, a receiver will need a main in and a pre out which this model TX 8220 does not have.

Q
I've heard of the relay burning out. Is this due to overheating and if so would a simple cooling fan help?
chris  Apr 05, 2023
1 answer
A
We have not documented that issue, so I would only be speculating as to any cause. That being said, adding a cooling fan to any stereo component will help cool and potentially extend the lifespan. The ATM Cool-it Component Cooler in the link below would be an excellent choice to add some piece of mind to the Onkyo's performance! This fan sits right on top and can be used with almost any component. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_3150100202/ATM-Cool-It-II-Component-Cooler.html

Will this receiver work with my Bose 201 bookshelf speakers? Thanks.
diane  Feb 28, 2023
1 answer
A
Yes, the Onkyo TX-8220 is compatible with the Bose 201 bookshelf speakers. The Onkyo is stable down to 4 ohms outputting 45 watts rms at 8 ohms and the Bose 201 speakers are compatible with receivers rated 4-8 ohms.

Q
Will this receiver provide adequate power for my "vintage" RTR G600 speakers?
bradford  Feb 24, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Bradford, and thank you for your question. I cannot find any information on the RTR G600 speakers to pull any specifications. The Onkyo has adequate power for most speakers at 80 watts per channel.

Q
Please forgive me for asking what may be a ridiculous question: I have a pair of JBL 4313Bs; would the Onkyo 8220 provide sufficient power per channel for the speakers I have?
wardell  Feb 14, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Wardell, and thank you for your question. The vintage JBL 4313b speakers are rated for 40 watts. Most receivers back in the early 80s had 40 watts, some even less. This Onlyo will give them 45.

Q
Can I look up 2 wired speakers and 2 Bluetooth speakers at the same time? Will the sound be in sync?
mark  Feb 06, 2023
1 answer
A
You cannot, Mark. Bluetooth features on the Onkyo TX-8220 Stereo receiver are for source only, meaning a smartphone, tablet, or other Bluetooth device for music source. You cannot use the Bluetooth to send music TO speakers with the Onkyo. You can connect up to four total wired speakers and play at the same time, however.

Q
Some stereo units that you review on the wattage that the unit puts out you show is total watts per channel RMS or total watts x 2. Can you explain each presentation of wattage?
martin  Jan 28, 2023
1 answer
A
We are saying the same thing in both scenarios, Martin. We focus solely on the RMS wattages as they tend to be the much more useful number when pairing gear together. If we are speaking on stereo units, RMS per channel and RMS x 2 we can treat as the same! I hope this helps.

Q
If you connect a digital audio source which outputs more than 2 channels (like a Blu-ray player), what does the receiver do with the other channels beside Left and Right? Does it mix them down into the Left and Right channels, or throw them away?
reid  Jan 18, 2023
1 answer
A
It would be necessary to adjust the settings of your source device to ensure it is only outputting 2-channel PCM. This will not accept multichannel formats like Dolby Digital or DTS.
zachary  Jan 19, 2023 (Staff)
Q
Can an equalizer be hooked up to this receiver?
timbo  Dec 22, 2022
1 answer
A
You can use an equalizer with RCA inputs/outputs Tim, but it would have to be connected in line between another audio source like a CD or tape player. If you are looking for a traditional "tape-monitor" type loop to use the equalizer with all sources from the Onkyo, then sadly you cannot. We see few receivers capable of that feature. I hope this helps!
bo  Dec 22, 2022 (Staff)
Q
I need a receiver with tape monitor to power Bose 901 speakers ? Any suggestions
bo  Dec 06, 2022
1 answer
A
We currently do not have any options that will offer you that capability for those specific Bose 901's sadly, Bo. Great name though I tell ya! The crossover absolutely needs the specific tape monitor loop, and we just don't see options that can provide that sadly. That being said, you can use the Onkyo TX-8220 to send its line out to your Bose crossover. Adding an external amp like the AudioSource AMP100VS after the crossover would be a great way to power the Bose 901's, using the Onkyo as your pre-amp. I hope this helps Bo!

Q
Is the amplification Class D or Class A/B? I have read both.
john  Nov 25, 2022
1 answer
A
This Onkyo TX-8220 Stereo receiver has an AB class amplifier confirmed, John. That is a big reason why this Onkyo packs a ton of sound quality in for a relatively small buy in!

Q
It has two preamp outputs. I have a 100W per channel power amp will it work with the TX-8220 including volume controls?
paul  Nov 12, 2022
1 answer
A
Greetings Paul, and thank you for your question. A pre out is a variable output which can be controlled by the source units volume. A line out is fixed, mainly for sending to a recording device. You would not control that line outputs volume via the source unit. If your amplifier had its own volume adjustments, that would work.

pryor l.  Jul 30, 2022

Q
Can you play through the phono input to a set of powered speakers though the line out?
cara  Jul 04, 2022
1 answer
A
You can, Cara! The line out on this Onkyo TX-8220 Stereo receiver will send whatever source is being played, phono included! The output is not linked to the volume knob, so the volume control on the Onkyo unit won't work there you will have to adjust the volume on the set of powered speakers. We love this Onkyo for the price!

Q
What is the Bluetooth range? I have hard wired speakers around my pool and want a receiver that can connect to my phone at about 40', if such a thing exists.
chris  Jul 02, 2022
1 answer
A
The Bluetooth range on this Onkyo TX-8220 Stereo receiver is about 32'. You can extend your wingspan there in a couple of ways. The Audioengine B1 Bluetooth adapter below can give you around 100' of range, and can be used with any stereo unit with a pair of RCA inputs. You could also use a unit like the Denon DRA-800H I've also linked below, it has Wi-fi capability built in so you can use your home Wi-fi to connect, increasing the useable range over Bluetooth as well! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_772B1ADPT/Audioengine-B1.html https://www.crutchfield.com/p_033DRA800/Denon-DRA-800H.html?tp=47041

I am not sure as I am not currently using a subwoofer with the receiver. Bluetooth interface works really well and sound output is great. I would call Crutchfield to dig into your subwoofer question !

There is no sub woofer output on that Onkyo model you really don't need one on that 8220 I used to have one they sound good like they are

Q
Can I play an old analog CD player through this receiver to wireless speakers?
john m  Nov 03, 2021
2 answers
A
You can hook your CD player to the receiver, but there is no bluetooth transmitter in the receiver to wireless speakers. I believe the bluetooth function function is only in and not out. Unless you have wireless speakers that have an interface (transmitter) to hook to the analog speakers connections on the back of the receiver.
clark  Nov 04, 2021
A
You can use the analog input for the CD player, but this receiver does not support any wireless speakers.

Can I hook up a tv to this so that I can listen to movies through my stereo speakers?

Through a hard line, a wire - yes. As nice as this unit is, there is no wireless "pairing" when it comes to the TV.
robert n.  Oct 11, 2021
A
Yes you can. I do with my TV. Just connect audio cables from TV to one of the receivers inputs. Good luck.

Yes. I also use the headphone jack to listen to the tv with headphones.

Should be able to, plus other select inputs. Most amps accept a variety of sources. I bought this unit as a future replacement for a very old Kenwood system, but not installed yet.
john  Oct 05, 2021

Yes, as I have done this very thing for a TV I have in my master bedroom. It works great as I also have external speakers, as well. Hope this helps.

Do I need an amp for a sub?
ian  Jul 26, 2021

A
The Onkyo TX-8220 Manual notes the following: "SUBWOOFER PRE OUT jack: Connect a powered subwoofer with a subwoofer cable." So an amp would be needed.

I have four 6 ohm speakers from a previous system. Can I use these speakers safely with this Onkyo tx-8220?

That depends on whether you want to play them all at once. I would only chance that if they are in series. "Google" that if necessary. Normally with amps that have two sets of speaker outputs, using both simultaneously will be placing them in parallel - in your case giving you a nominal impedance of 3 ohms - which would be likely to damage the amp. If you do want to use those speakers, you could of course play either one pair or the other at any given time with no problem since the amp is stable down to 4 ohms.

I only run one pair of 6 ohms but I believe there is plenty of power to run 2 pair.

I do not understand the question. Is she simply wanting to use her sound bar as a speaker instead of using for her TV? If so, I presume she could, would need to know what type of connectors are on sound bar.

I have no idea. As a not-very-techie 74-year-old, I just use it the way it is and it is great.

One of the reasons I purchased the 8220 is because I had existing speakers in my great room ceiling that had existing conventional speaker wiring. The binding post speaker connectors made the connection much more stable. Would banana plugs work, not sure/ don't see why not. Banana plugs were made for the easy wiring into conventional "pinch connectors" that are relatively rare nowadays. That being said, the sound of my 8220 receiver is extremely good for the price. I bought it to power 4 speakers in my great room ceiling, Bose 161T speaker system. Not true surround sound but sounds good with my 20 year old Bose 3·2·1® home entertainment system. Hope this helps.

Yes, but you cannot use a heavy gauge wire. The receiver has been great and the bluetooth makes it.

A
It is 2.1, no center channel, but does have input for sub.

Technically it's a 4.1 ; 4 speakers and 1 subwoofer. It could be considered a 2 channel with A and B. Hope this helps.
jeffrey  Apr 06, 2019
A
This receiver is 2.1 Channels. It has a 2 channel power amp and a Pre-amp output for a subwoofer. The receiver also has A and B speaker hookups, these can be selected between or combined to drive all 4. This still uses the same 2 channel amp and just runs the speakers in parallel with each other.

Will it connect to my Cowin wireless headphones?
brian  Mar 22, 2019

That Onkyo receiver does not have a built in Bluetooth transmitter to send a signal to a pair of wireless headphones. You can use a Bluetooth transmitter like this Soundcast VGtx https://bit.ly/2IjK2yB You could also consider a receiver that has a Bluetooth transmitter built in like this Yamaha R-N303 https://bit.ly/2uUx7LC If you have questions about either of those options you can connect with one of our friendly Product Advisors here https://bit.ly/2QNxGQB

Pair your iPhone or other device through the receiver's Bluetooth function. Once paired, the audio from your device will play through the speakers connected to the Onkyo receiver.

You need a bluetooth connection to have the source play to this receiver. If your computer or tablet has a bluetooth feature you may be OK. I suggest calling ONKYO support to see if the receiver has your computer or tablet in their menu. Good Luck. I play all my Iphone music through this receiver.
robert h  Jan 17, 2019

You could connect your computer or tablet to the amp via Bluetooth. Most computers/tablet's have that capability

Q
Will it push Klipsch R-820f speakers?
shawn  Dec 04, 2018
2 answers
A
It depends on how much you want to push them. If the speakers are very efficient, which Klipsch often are, they might well give you plenty of sound to fill your listening area.
brian  Sep 24, 2021
A
I really don't understand the question, with the information you provided. what are the input signal requirements power and frequency of your speakers what is the output power and frequency of the onkyo, define "push" in terms of power and frequency. Lord Kelvin stated: "Measurement is the basis of all knowledge." (circa 1720)

Q
What would be the RMS power output be @ 4 Ohms and does this unit come with fans for cooling?
chad  Nov 20, 2018
2 answers
A
The published specs only give RMS power output at 6 and 8 ohms (85 and 45 watts respectively). They do give IEC60268 short-term maximum output power at 3, 4 and 8 ohms ( 140, 120, and 80 W). There is no cooling fan, but, at least as I use it, it does not seem to become very hot.
alvin y. y  Nov 30, 2018
A
While the Onkyo is stable down to 4 Ohms on each of it's channels, they do not provide a different wattage rating when presented with the lower impedance. It does not have built-in cooling fans.
