Digital media receiver (does not play CDs)
Our take on the Sony DSX-A40UI by Crutchfield's Jon P.
Go digital without going broke
Ditching the discs and going digital doesn't have to break the bank. Sony's DSX-A40UI digital media receiver offers an impressive list of features for its price range, along with plenty of connections for all your devices.
Everything you need
Bells and whistles are nice, but you don't necessarily need them to go all-digital in your car. The DSX-A40UI has all the basics covered, starting with a sleek-looking removable faceplate that also offers the functionality you need to enjoy your digital music library.
A handy USB port gives you lots of options for enjoying your digital music. Plug in a flash drive that you've loaded up with music, or connect your iPod®, iPhone®, or Android™ to listen to music and charge the device. You'll be able to use the receiver's controls to search through your music, and Sony's Quick-BrowZer® feature makes it easy to find music by artist, album, genre, song or playlist. You can also connect a satellite radio tuner or a portable music player to the front auxiliary input.
Adjust and expand
The built-in amp ensures that your music will come through loud and clear, even when you're really cranking it up. If you're the kind of person who likes to fiddle with the settings to suit your exact tastes, you'll be surprised at how much adjustability you get with the DSX-A40UI's 3-band equalizer. If you're thinking about adding an amplifier in the future, you'll find a set of 2-volt preamp outputs on the back panel.
This receiver offers a simple control panel with USB and auxiliary inputs.
Whether you're listening to digital music or your favorite AM/FM radio station, you'll be able to see what's playing on the single-line LCD display, which shows you track info, station ID and a clock. The faceplate's red button illumination adds a touch of style. You also get a handy remote control that lets your passengers play DJ while you drive.
Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Why did you buy this?
I trust Sony equipment and the specs for this radio were the best in its price range. [ ROBERT J Jul 21, 2016 ]
I love Sony, my tv and Blu-ray player and sound system are Sony [ Jeffrey Jun 22, 2016 ]
Nice inexpensive upgrade from my previous radio. [ Christine Jun 08, 2016 ]
Mainly because of the price, the fact that it has USB and AUX support. I am replacing an older Sony Xplod deck that is failing. I love the power output of the unit, it powers my Clarion 6x9s and 6.5s perfectly! [ G May 16, 2016 ]
The head unit fits the dash perfectly [ Bill May 13, 2016 ]
It's supposed to fit in my car and I can use the existing factory mount brackets ,saving me the trouble, time and money of buying an additional dash kit that I won't need. [ Onyx Apr 15, 2016 ]
I wanted something simple without too many lights and buttons, this seems like it will work for me. Also the display looks like it will be easier to read. I hope so. [ roberto Apr 07, 2016 ]
I like Sony products very much. I think they are built tough and easy to use. [ Benjamin Mar 28, 2016 ]

The Sony radio works fine with any I phone, but having problem with android, maybe is the settings. [ Michael May 21, 2016 ]
1 answer I recently installed this unit into a 2006 Nissan Altima and after I installed it was very disappointed with how little power and volume my speakers had opposed to the original stock radio. I tried adjusting the gain and the EQ presets but still had little effect on the volume of sound it was able to produce. Any ideas why it's not getting enough power? It says it's a 4 channel 55 watt max output which would seem to be plenty of power if it in fact was receiving that amount of power. [ Brandon Apr 30, 2016 ]

The bass and treble can be adjusted, but it is not labeled that way. The adjustments are found under EQ settings. Press the round select knob to go into "Sound Setup" (note - do not press and hold; that takes you to "General Setup"). After entering "Sound Setup", rotate the knob to select the desired item, then press it. You will see the following: EQ3 PRST, Balance, Fader, Aux Vol. Select EQ3 PRST, then CUSTOM, and then you will see EQ3 LOW, EQ3 MID, and EQ3 HIGH. [ Alan Apr 12, 2016 ]
yes you can [ PETER F Apr 11, 2016 ]
Yes, you can, it had pre loaded settings or you can make a custom one. [ Marco Christian Apr 11, 2016 ]
Yes. There are preset EQ's (pop, rock, Xplod, talk, etc) and a custom EQ that you can adjust to your taste (high, mid, low). [ Audie Apr 11, 2016 ]

1 answer How bright is the LCD screen; seems that many radio's are like spot lights, almost comparable to turning on the overhead lights in a vehicle. We are looking for a radio without all the bright blue lights, we want to see the LCD but not so bright you can see the LCD screen for outer space. Bright? [ Anthony Mar 22, 2016 ]
The LCD is an appropriate level of lighting. It is not too bright, but it is easy to read. It is not distracting or obtrusive. [ Kevin Mar 22, 2016 ]
I'm not sure what you mean by "the 2.1 configuration" but the stereo does offer a pair of RCA pre-amp outputs for providing signal (full range/rear fading) to an external amplifier. The stereo's built-in amp (17 watts RMS x 4) really isn't enough to power external subwoofers so you'll likely need to add an amp. I hope that helps! 5 answers Does this radio play AAC files (made in Itunes) from USB stick (I want to use USB stick, not an ipod)? I am confused about this, since on some sites it mentions AAC files, but on the Sony site it only says MP3 and WMA files. 2 answers My question relates to the scrolling information, either when playing an ipod through the USB or from the radio information when playing FM, I find it highly annoying when a radio scrolls the information and does not stop, while listening in either mode can you turn this off? Can you simply have the radio station with no song scrolling information? Also can you simply have the time(clock) on when listening to an Ipod through the USB? Thanks. [ J Jan 10, 2014 ]
We returned this model; wanted something with a CD player as well. Hate that I can not help ya. [ Rebecca Jan 12, 2014 ]
Yes there is a menu if you hold down the big button to turn scrolling off. You can have the clock on while listening by pressing the Display button till it is displayed. [ ANDREW Jan 10, 2014 ]
