Our take on the Klipsch Reference Premiere RP-440C by Crutchfield's Dave Bar
Crystal-clear dialogue and smooth, natural sound
Home theater enthusiasts know that nothing brings out the best in their movies and TV shows quite like a high-quality center channel speaker. Everything from softly whispered dialogue to powerful special effects come shining through with the Klipsch RP-440C. This potent center channel speaker from Klipsch's latest Reference Premiere Series stands ready to bring cinema-quality sound into your living room. The RP-440C features four 4" woofers for plenty of bass and midrange punch, plus Klipsch's signature 1" horn tweeter for outstanding intelligibility and sparkling clear highs.
The Reference Premiere Series difference
Never one to rest on its laurels, Klipsch has been busy refining and improving its designs to create loudspeakers that blow the doors off of its loyal followers' expectations. The new Reference Premiere Series builds on the acoustics and technologies of Klipsch's classic Reference Series, with important enhancements that provide an even more intense listening experience.
With its Hybrid Tractrix horn and Cerametallic woofers, the RP-440C center channel speaker effortlessly delivers clear, powerful Klipsch sound.
Hybrid Horn technology for dynamic performance
Horn technology is one of Klipsch's long-standing hallmarks. Flared openings in the speaker cabinet project sound waves toward your listening area and prevent them from simply spilling out in all directions. This design reduces reflections that can color the sound, and boosts dynamics and efficiency for powerful, "front row" sound that remains crystal-clear at all volume levels.
Klipsch's newly designed Hybrid Tractrix® horn features a circular throat around an advanced titanium diaphragm tweeter that transitions into a square 90º x 90º mouth. This unique shape provides a cleaner, more efficient transition of sound waves into your listening space. Compared to previous Klipsch models, this horn design delivers a wider sweet spot with more precise placement of instruments and vocals. Even the horn material itself has been upgraded to molded silicone rubber that helps decrease resonance for smoother, warmer highs.
The RP-440C's Tractrix horn shaped port cuts down on air turbulence, reducing noise and distortion.
A horn that can enhance bass, too
Look around the back, and you'll see that instead of the conventional round port tube found on many speakers, Klipsch uses a Tractrix horn-shaped opening for smoother, more efficient airflow in and out of the cabinet. The resulting decrease in air turbulence makes for cleaner, more powerful bass with reduced port noise and low-frequency distortion.
High-tech woofer design
The RP-440C's Cerametallic™ woofers dish out smooth midrange and articulate, well-defined bass. Klipsch makes its cones out of specially treated aluminum that's strong yet lightweight, to dampen and prevent distortion. With the Reference Premiere Series, Klipsch also gave these woofers newly developed titanium voice coil formers that allow more linear movement for enhanced efficiency, lower distortion, and extended low frequency response.

90° x 90° Hybird Tractrix Horns: A redesigned Tractrix Horn utilizes a circular horn throat paired to a square horn mouth to further improve high-frequency response and extension, while enhancing imaging and dynamics. The compressed molded rubber construction adds high frequency damping to reduce harshness and improve detail. This creates the cleanest, most natural sound possible. These 90° x 90° Hybrid Tractrix Horns provide a wider sweet spot while maintaining controlled directivity of the sound.
LTS Tweeters: Behind each Tractrix Horn lies a 1" titanium tweeter with a linear travel suspension for open, natural, sound. The Linear Travel Suspension minimizes distortion for enhanced, detailed performance.
Cerametallic Woofers: The four 4" woofers of the RP-440C center-channel loudspeaker feature Klipsch's distinctive, copper-colored Cerametallic material. Made with an anodized aluminum, this cone is strong and dent resistant. The anodizing process converts its inner and outer surfaces to ceramic. The outcome is a rigid cone with superb damping characteristics that will not flex or resonate at frequencies within the woofer's operating range The 4" woofers also employ a rubber surround for added durability.
Crossover Network: The Klipsch RP-440C center-channel speaker's crossover network is constructed using extremely high-quality components including top-of-the-line internal wiring, polyester film-type capacitors and an air-core inductor to ensure signal purity and proper driver integration. The speaker's enhanced crossover frequencies (500/1500Hz) offer smoother on-axis and off-axis integration.
Bass Reflex MDF Enclosure: The Klipsch RP-440C employs a bass reflex enclosure with a rear-firing Tractrix port for greater efficiency and bigger bass response. Utilizing Tractrix geometry, the all new Reference Premiere bass port allows for the most efficient, fastest air transfer from the cabinet for a clean, powerful low frequency response. The speaker's rigid cabinet offers improved internal cross-bracing to minimize panel vibrations that can color sound.
Magnetic Grille: The center-channel loudspeaker features a removable magnetic low-diffraction grille which easily snaps into place over its polymer front baffle.
Binding Posts: The Klipsch Reference Premiere series RP-440C is equipped with sturdy binding posts to ensure a secure connection to many types of cable and connectors. The binding post terminals will accept banana plugs (single only), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and bare wire.
Placement: The RP-440C should be centered directly above or below your video screen. If necessary, you can place the speaker on an optional floor stand in front of and below the screen that elevates it to the correct height. Ideally, however, the speaker's front baffle should be flush with the front of the screen.
Rubber Feet: The center channel speaker comes with four self-adhesive rubber feet to secure the speaker in place and prevent any damage to your stand's or shelf's surface. The rubber feet add approximately 0.125" to the height of each speaker.

I'm old school and from Arkansas. The birthplace of Klipsch. But the biggest reason is I've been buying Klipsch speakers, headphones etc since 1985. Never had a sound that was anything but clear. This center channel speaker has great clarity with tv dialogue. Something needed at my age. [ Gary Nov 05, 2018 ]
Our current center speaker has always been underpowered, making dialog difficult to understand at times. With the center speaker being so critical for dialog in movies I thought I would start there. With the speaker's depth it will also make it possible to place our TV on top, without placing the TV to high. The reviews on sound quality and the Klipsch name helped narrow the field. [ Dave Sep 24, 2018 ]
It was on sale and the free shipping. I have been waiting for this speaker to go on sale for a couple months now. I was just waiting for the price to drop. [ Frederico Balla Jul 10, 2018 ]

I have Klipsch in-Ceiling Front and Rear and a Polk Center Channel. The quality of the Polk was unacceptable for Voice. Sounded muffled and cloudy - but the music came through perfect. Chuck from Crutchfield helped me know what to do. [ Glenn Jan 04, 2016 ]

research [ gerald Aug 29, 2018 ]
I chose this item as many independent review labs identified the top Center Channel speaker (or one of the top) as the Klipsch RP-250C. Since I have an extremely large room (500 square feet with a 16' cathedral ceiling) I decided to size up to the next model in the lineup. Also the Crutchfield reps I spoke to were also complimentary of this model. For aesthetics, I liked the Piano Black cabinetry, copper woofer and screw-less presentation. [ Carmela Jul 22, 2018 ]

don't think you would want too you could have some vibration issues. I would ask your Crutchfield rep about that. [ Douglas Wayne Dec 30, 2017 ]
I did not try to remove them as the speaker sits on a marble shelf in a wall unit...since they are rubber and probably just glued on you probably can remove them with some effort [ DONALD J Dec 30, 2017 ]
You could take them off with a sharp putty knife. However - I would not do that for 2 reasons. 1, they elevate the speaker 1/8" off the other surface, 2, they provide isolation between the speaker cabinet and the other surface. If the speaker sits flat on the other surface like a Media Cabinet, then the entire Cabinet vibrates and distorts the sound [ Glenn Dec 30, 2017 ]

Keith B. In addition to room size, it's as much about matching everything else. (fronts, rears, sub, amp....) With that said, I'm driving the 440C, RP-260F, and RP-240S with a Yamaha RX-3060. Plus I'm running an old Definitive Technology 15" sub. All of this around a 70" wall mounted flat panel TV in roughly a 15' wide by 23' deep room with a large amount of insulation and sound absorbing materials to minimize resonance and transmission to the floor above. Now to give you feedback on the 440. It is a very good center. But I really wish I would have stepped up to the 450 for the small price difference. the 440 does not have a large enough sound to match the fronts and a lot of the spoken content sounds a bit muted without some extra tuning involved. I'm thinking about adding a couple elevation speakers. This should easily compensate for the smaller center and help to spread the center channel sound to better match the TV. Rule of thumb I should have used was to match the center as close as possible to the fronts. Overall, I'm very happy with the RP series in bang for the buck as well as Crutchfield for their great service. It was between this and Martin Logan electro-stats for nearly triple the price. But when I heard the RP's at a local shop side by side the the ML's, I couldn't justify the difference. Good luck in your hunt! Tony [ Anthony Dec 06, 2016 ]
I have this in a room that measures approx. 15' x 20' and my ceiling height is 10'. I am very please with the performance. Its efficient so can hear voices at a very low volume. As far as what room size I am probably not qualified to answer. I will tell you it is a very large speaker and may look a imposing in a smaller room sometimes I think it's too big, but the sound is great. Not sure if that helps.... good luck [ Joe Dec 06, 2016 ]
I have 15x20 and it's awesome [ Glenn Dec 06, 2016 ]
My entertainment center sustains the weight of the TV, My center channel speaker is free of any weight being placed on it. [ Jose F. Feb 05, 2016 ]
I wouldn't. I don't think that it makes a proper, or safe platform for a tv. [ Matthew Feb 04, 2016 ]
I have my 40" flat screen sitting on mine with no problems. I'm not sure it weighs as much as yours - maybe 35-38 lbs. The edges of the speaker, of course, are stronger than the center so a wide stand would be best. I assumed that Klipsch engineers have taken this set up into consideration. [ Mark Feb 04, 2016 ]
I don't see why not. The case seems pretty well made. [ JOHN Feb 04, 2016 ]
Depends on the configuration of your TV stand. But it's generally not a good idea and I will strongly suggest against it. One, there's a greater chance of your TV toppling over because the speaker will not be fixed (I assume it will not), therefore, your TV will not be in s solid base. Two, the speaker was not designed to take on that load. If you're TV is against a wall, get a shelf and place your speaker above the TV. [ Adrian Feb 03, 2016 ]
There is no mention of this in the manual. I can tell you it is a large speaker and built very well. Weighing nearly 30lbs itself I would think it could support it but would check with klipsch directly. Their support is very good and should be able to provide you with a definitive answer. [ Joe Feb 03, 2016 ]
Yes... I have my 70in Vizio TV directly on the speaker and there is no issue what so ever. Just make sure the base of your tv fits on the speaker and you should have no issue. [ Tabitha Feb 03, 2016 ]
Yes u can. I have my 55" Sony 4k tv on it which weighs about that much. I can probably stand on it and it would be ok it's very strong [ Joey L Feb 03, 2016 ]
Probably. It is a solid unit.. I put the speaker on top ofy tv [ Mike Feb 03, 2016 ]
Yes [ Sulman Feb 03, 2016 ]
As long as the base dimensions aren't an issue, I wouldn't think it would a problem. The cabinet is well constructed and I'm sure would easily handle the 49 lbs. [ Dennis Feb 03, 2016 ]
The speaker box is well built thus it can easily withstand a TV of that weight, provided it's stand sits squarely on top. That way the weight would be evenlying distributed and keep the TV balanced. [ ADRIAN Feb 03, 2016 ]
It seems solid so it probably should not be a problem. I decided to hang my tv and slip the speaker underneath the tv to hide the wires. I didn't want the tv to be to high for viewing. [ Christopher Feb 03, 2016 ]
sorry! i am not a sound tech or expert. i suggest to check Klipsch website and/or contact Klipsch. [ LISA Nov 28, 2015 ]
I have mine about 4 to 5" away from the wall and it sounds amazing. [ Joey L Nov 25, 2015 ]
Hey Jack, call and talk to Kirk. As for my set up I have them approx 16" from the wall. [ Carl Nov 24, 2015 ]
The answer depends on the wall's surface material and the angle of the speaker from the wall. My walls have plaster board. The speaker is placed 18 inches from the wall with good merger of sound waves and timing to that of my subwoofer. Depending on the viewing angle from the TV and the speaker angle from the wall you may want to adjust slightly. Playing with this a little a, I have not appreciate hearing much difference over the range of 12 - 30 inches from the wall. [ Richard Nov 24, 2015 ]
That's a good question and one as far as I can tell is not addressed in the manual. I have mine about 2.5 inches from wall, sounds great! [ Joe Nov 24, 2015 ]
From the online research done on this speaker, I have seen references to where a minimum of 3 inches would be sufficient for the speaker to "breathe" properly. The speaker sounds great between 3 and 16 inches away from the wall, so experiment with it to see which distance works best for you. [ ADRIAN Nov 24, 2015 ]
