Clarion NX605 navigation receiver

Clarion's NX605 navigation receiver keeps you connected to the world outside your car. It's got built-in navigation with traffic updates, lets you use popular apps on the big touchscreen, and uses voice-recognition software that lets you talk your way through common tasks, so you can keep your eyes on the road. The NX605 is a great all-around choice for anyone who spends time in the car.

Clarion's Smart Access system works with iPhones and Android, and puts some of your favorite apps up on the screen. You'll need an adapter to use Smart Access, plus the Smart Access app. Once you've got those things in place, you can use apps like Facebook, Twitter, email, internet radio and more, and use the voice-recognition system to interact with them.

You can use the Intelligent Voice feature for a variety of tasks. Best of all, you don't need to speak in special coded terms, you can talk to the NX605 using more conversational speech. Just say something like "Chinese restaurant nearby," and the system quickly searches for it. Sync your gmail account, and you can use the software to dictate emails while you're on the road. The system can read your incoming emails to you. That's just the tip of the iceberg, really. The voice command system is great for doing all kinds of things, from playing music to sending text messages.

Maps are always nice to have the NX605 works with certain navigation and traffic apps through Smart Access, but also features built-in maps and traffic with a dedicated GPS antenna. We found the built-in maps to be snappy and reliable, with a cool 3D view and even landmarks that pop up to help keep you oriented.

The system sounds great, too, and gives you some nice controls that help you dial in just the right sound. We liked how the NX605 looked in the dash, and came away impressed with how the voice recognition feature really freed us from needing to interact with the screen all the time. It's a great all-around head unit that makes drive time more fun.
