Boss BN965BLC navigation receiver

See things clearly on a 6.5" screen

The BN965BLC sports a big, beautiful monitor, so you can see the included maps of the United States (except Hawaii) and Puerto Rico with ease. And you'll have millions of points of interest to choose from when it's time for a break from the road. Pull up audio and video sources through the touchscreen, including digital files stored on USB drives or SD cards, streaming audio from your smartphone, a wired portable MP3 player, and good old-fashioned CDs and DVDs.

Included rear-view camera

The 6.5" screen also comes in handy for viewing images from Boss's rear-view camera, which comes with a license-plate mount. The image engages automatically when you shift into reverse, or you can access the camera's view through the stereo's touchscreen. You'll be able to see nearby car bumpers and other hazards lurking in blind spots. Once you're out of reverse, the stereo's display will revert to its previous screen. The BN965BLC includes a dedicated rear-view camera input and all the wiring required for installation, and it features a second dedicated input if you want to add an optional front-view camera for enhanced safety.

Leading the way

Not only does the receiver provide accurate guidance, it helps you with text-to-speech voice prompts, which announce actual street names at turns. You'll hear "turn right on Montague Street," instead of "take the next right."  Lane guidance ensures you'll be in the correct position for your next turn, and you'll see 3D renderings of select buildings and landmarks for more assurance.

Hands-free calling and music streaming with Bluetooth®

Boss includes Bluetooth connectivity with the BN965BLC, so you'll be able to make and take calls using your compatible phone through the stereo. You can talk right through the built-in mic on the front panel, so your callers will hear you clearly. You can stream music from your smartphone, and control basic playback functions with the receiver's touchscreen.

Connections galore

The receiver's front-panel slot accommodates your SD card loaded with tunes, while the front aux in works with portable devices. A front USB input makes it easy to connect a thumb drive full of music, or you can jack a satellite radio tuner or other device into the rear audio/video input. A composite A/V output lets you send movies or other video content to external video monitors, so you can keep the backseat crew entertained. A full complement of preamp outputs includes a dedicated subwoofer out with low-pass filter.

You'll need a wired connection to your parking brake to access settings and other features on this receiver. Your parking brake must be connected and set in order to view video on its screen.

Installation Note: The included backup cam has a 21-inch video cable, but Boss includes a 16-1/2 foot power/video extension cable. Please measure your vehicle, and call us if you don't think that will be long enough.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

    Touchscreen + Remote Control

6.5" LCD Touchscreen: Boss BV965NV navigation receiver features a fixed 6.5" widescreen touchscreen LCD monitor. The screen has a resolution of 800 RGB x 480 with 1,152,000 total pixels. This unit has touchscreen controls with interactive video graphics, making menu navigation easy.

    • Wallpaper/Backgrounds: You can choose from 5 preset wallpaper/backgrounds.
    • Clock & Date: You can set and display the date & time.
    • Backlight Brightness: You can adjust the LCD touchscreen monitor's brightness for day and nighttime viewing.
Note: For safety reasons, you cannot view a video source on the built-in LCD screen as long as the vehicle is in motion. In order to display video, the light green wire (attached to rear-chassis) must be hardwired into the vehicle's parking brake light circuit, and the vehicle's parking brake must be engaged.

Start Up Time: The Boss BV965NV has a start up time of approximately 8.3 seconds from Off to an AV Source screen, and a start up time of 21.7 seconds from Off to the Navigation Map screen.

Hard-Key Controls: In addition to the unit's LCD touchscreen controls, the BV965NV also features hard-key controls on the left edge of the screen (including a 3-way rotary audio control).

IR Remote: The Boss BV965NV includes a 36-button IR remote control for complete wireless operation of the navigation receiver.

Optional Steering Wheel Control: The unit features a SWC (steering wheel control) input which lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with optional steering wheel control adapter (sold separately).

    Onboard Navigation

NDrive Navigation Software: The Boss BV965NV contains map coverage of the United States (except Hawaii), Virgin Islands, & Puerto Rico with over a million points-of-interest from TomTom; all stored on the pre-installed 8GB microSD card. The BV965NV employs NDrive software for turn-by-turn visual and voice guidance to your selected destination. The software quickly calculates step-by-step directions to any destination available on the included on-screen navigation map.

Note: While the receiver's map database was judged to be as accurate as possible at the time of its release, a map database can never be 100% accurate. Road information that is maintained in the map databases, such as turn restrictions or road names may change over time.

Map Updates: NDrive offers periodic updates (purchase fees will apply) for data such as roads, new addresses, and other navigational information that will keep the Boss navigation system up to date and provide the best possible experience. For updates and add-on options, please visit NDrive.com.

GPS Receiver & Antenna: The Boss BV965NV features a built-in GPS receiver and includes an external GPS antenna which determines vehicle speed and heading changes, along with longitude and latitude information, to accurately determine vehicle heading and position on the system's digital map. The GPS antenna can be mounted inside or outside of the vehicle.

Note: The navigation receiver took approximately 57.1 seconds to calculate directions from Charlottesville, Virginia to Los Angeles, California. It only took 23.7 seconds to calculate directions from Virginia to Baltimore, Maryland. These tests were done inside the Crutchfield Lab of the Crutchfield Headquarters. Results will vary based on length of calculated route and your surrounding area.

2D or 3D Map: The unit's on-screen 2D or 3D map shows your vehicle's current position (a Green arrow), the recommended route (a violet line), the surrounding map area, and your destination (checkered flag). The on-screen map shows streets, roads, and highways in a way that is similar to how a paper road map displays them. A road's width and colors corresponds to their importance, so you can easily tell a freeway from a small street. When navigating a route, the top section of the map screen shows information about your next route maneuver and the next street. When approaching a turn, the map screen will zoom in and raise the view angle to let you easily recognize your maneuver at the next junction. If the next turn is at a distance, it will zoom out and lower the view angle to be flat so you can see the road in front of you. The map also displays data; such as the posted speed limit, your current speed, current time, distance to your destination, time left before you reach your destination, and your arrival time.

Lane Information & Signposts: The Boss BV965NV's navigation map offers helpful lane information and signpost guidance

    • Lane Information: When navigation on multilane roads, it is important to take the appropriate lane in order to follow the recommended route. If lane information is available in the map data, the map screen will display the lanes and their directions using small arrows at the bottom of the map. High lighted arrows represent the lanes you need to take.
    • Signposts: Where additional information is available, signposts substitute arrows. Signposts are displayed at the top of the map. The color and style of the signposts are similar to the real ones you can see above the road or by the roadside, They show the available destinations and the number of the road the lane leads to.

Voice Guidance w/ Text-To-Speech: In addition to graphic directions, the BV965NV provides voice guidance with text-to-speech. You'll get turn-by-turn instructions with the announcement of street names. You can select from English, French, or Spanish languages.

Destination Search: You are able to select a destination by touching an area on the map screen, entering an address, choosing a POI, picking a saved Favorite, or choosing from your recent History.

    • Browse Map: Select a point on the map for your destination by touching the screen.
    • Address: Enter a full address or a part of an address; you can enter Country, State, Town, and or Street.
    • POIs: Search millions of POIs (points-of interest) near you current location, in a city, within a postcode, or around a set of coordinates.
    • Favorites (Home): You can save your favorite addresses (like Home & Work) and POIs for quicker access the next time you are traveling.
    • History: The places that you have set as destinations in the past are automatically stored for easier access.
    • Itinerary: You can select from saved Itineraries and Waypoints.

Routing Options: You can choose how the head unit's navigation system calculates your route by selecting Fastest or Shortest. You can also indicate if you want to use or avoid Toll roads.

Preview Route: Once the unit has calculated the route to your destination, you can preview the turn-by-turn instructions, view the map route, and simulate travel along the route.

Route Alternatives: The NDrive navigation software gives you the option to calculate an alternative route, place a roadblock (if for any reason a part of the route is blocked), avoid part of the route (due to traffic or other info), or re-calculate the original route if you made any changes.

Safety Alerts: The unit's navigation software features visual & audible safety alerts.

    • Speed Limit Alarm: An audible alarm will ring when you exceed the speed limit which you configure; you may choose to turn this feature off.

    Q
How do I connect the SWC Input in my Boss BN965BLC radio? It looks to be an AV port but I cannot find where to connect it in my 2006 Toyota Tundra.
    leo  Aug 01, 2023
    1 answer
    A
This depends totally on the installation interface you are using, Leo. Some interfaces have the steering wheel controller built-in, but if you are using a basic harness for install you will need to add the Axxess ASWC-1 in the first link with the Metra 70-8114 harness in the second link below. I hope this helps! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_120ASWC1/Axxess-ASWC-1-Steering-Wheel-Control-Adapter.html https://www.crutchfield.com/p_120708114/Metra-70-8114-Steering-Wheel-Control-Harness.html

How do you upload a photo display on startup?
    michael  Jun 16, 2023

    A
I will try my best to help, Michael. After scouring the installation manual there is no mention of selecting a photo from a connected USB drive to set on start, that feature does not appear supported on this radio. You can customize the wallpaper on the Boss BN965BLC from the settings menu by choosing a wallpaper. You can also view photos and customize the slideshow from the front screen controls when in photo mode. I hope this helps!

You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you. You can also check to see if this will fit your vehicle by using our Outfit My Car tool: http://www.crutchfield.com/car/carselector.aspx An advisor will be able to pull up your vehicle and give you the details on if this will fit and what you will need for an installation in your vehicle.

    Q
Parking brake must be set for video? I assume it must not be set for the navigation screen?
    paul  Sep 15, 2022
    1 answer
    A
The parking brake is required to be engaged for any video playback, or carious features that would take your eyes off of the road. The navigation, bluetooth audio streaming, and basic operations are not affected by this.

It shows a 2' power cable for the back up camera, is this typically long enough for any installation? Looking to install on a 2007 Chevy Silverado Crew Cab.
    hunter  Jul 27, 2022
    1 answer
    A
It typically is long enough to tap into a reverse light for power, which is what most people do, so the camera cuts on automatically when you back up.

Greetings Rob, and thank you for your question. A touch screen stereo is a little more involved than a basic CD playing stereo, but nothing that cannot be done yourself. We provide vehicle specific instructions, and get you all the gear that you would need to install it yourself, and if you are stuck at anytime, we have tech support over the phone 7 days a week to assist.

Hi Mike The camera l installed is adjustable. It goes on the license plate. And yes radio plays during navigation except when navigation is speaking with voice directions then it overrides the radio. I don't think the radio displays songs and artists. Just the station it's on. Hope this helps you with your decisions or purchases

I haven't updated mine, but did find this!!!!!! To update and/or purchase additional maps for your In-Dash/Car Radio device, please download our NPlus updater tool from the link below to your computer, and install it: NPlus: ndrive com/support-ndrive11/ Note: NPlus is compatible with Windows 64-bit and Mac 64-bit platforms only. After downloading and installing NPlus, you will need to create a user account. To do so, use the "create account" link on the NPlus login screen. ?nplus_login.png As soon as the account is created, you will receive a confirmation email. Afterward, simply remove the navigation memory card from your In-Dash radio, and connect it to your computer either via a USB SD-Card reader, or using your computer's built-in card reader. Run NPlus, and log into NPlus using your account details. Press "Updates" to search for available updates, or press "Buy" to purchase additional maps.

How do I wire the back up camera on a 2010 Chevy silverado 1500 extended cab 6'5 ft bed?
    riece  Dec 28, 2019
    1 answer
    A
Crutchfield Customer Service and/or Tech Support, I'm more than happy to send this customer an answer. Unfortunately since I've never been able to solve this same challenge since March 2018 on getting the backup camera function to work in my 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche 2500 I can't provide any useful information. The Boss manufacturer documentation manuals were basically useless regarding how to wire up the rear view camera, and Crutchfield never responded to my e-mail questions sent through the web site, so I just skipped it in order to avoid further aggravation. If Crutchfield Customer Service or Tech Support can now provide any useful support on a solution to this problem I'd sure appreciate getting it also, as undoubtedly will this new customer ("Stretch") who is asking the same question. can the camera be turned on manually when not in reverse ?
    gene  Dec 02, 2019

Yes it can. Your Boss Stereo has a "Mode" button at the top left. This button has a "Camera" position and if your backup camera is wired correctly on both ends, it will function as a manual select as well as an automatic reverse. I installed mine in November of 2022, so there may have been an upgrade from earlier models.

Hi Gene, thank you for your question. The Boss BN965BLC does not have the ability to view the backup camera while not in reverse. We do have other options of receivers that can give you that feature, however. Please chat with us online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695. An Advisor will be happy to look at your vehicle's information, and help you find a stereo that would be able to provide you with the features you're most interested in.

what version maps will come with it?
    keith  Nov 30, 2019

Hi, thank you for your question. The Boss BN965BLC receiver uses NDrive Navigation Software. The maps will be pre-loaded onto the 8GB SD card that will come with the receiver. We can not guarantee that the maps on that card will be fully up-to-date, however NDrive offers periodic updates (purchase fees will apply) for data such as roads, new addresses, and other navigational information that will keep the Boss navigation system up to date and provide the best possible experience. You may log onto NDrive.com, For updates and add-on options. Hope this helps. Chat with an Advisor online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695, they will be happy to answer any additional questions.

Hi David, thank you for your question. Upon going over the owners manual for this receiver, I do not see that the time will still be displayed on the unit if it is powered off. You may contact Boss' support teams at 805-751-4853, they may have further info.

Has anyone installed a BOSS BN965BLC navigation receiver in a Lexus CT200h? If so, what all did you have to order extra to fit correctly (if anything)? Reason I ask is that every navigation receiver that shows up for my vehicle make and model, it says "Fit unknown for your Lexus" and yes, I already went through a live chat and they couldn't help.

We likely don't have a dash kit for your Lexus CT200H Ray. It's possible you might be able to modify an existing kit to work but more than likely you would need to fabricate one - we typically recommend having this done by a professional installer.

It depends on the angle of the dash face that it will go into. I have a Toyota Yaris (sedan) in which the dash faces upward at about a 20-degree angle from vertical and it is right under the windshield. I made a sun shield out of thin PVC to shade the display when the sun angle coming in through the window is such that it shines directly on the unit. This seemed to work out fine for me. There are two things I don't really like about this unit that I will pass on to you, however. 1) the GPS nav system is by N-Drive and the microSD card that stores the maps can only be updated from a Windows PC. I have a Mac, so I'm out of luck. Also the N-drive navigation isn't as good as Garmin by a long shot. 2) the USB port on the front is supposed to play MP3 audio files from a thumb drive. I've only been able to get the unit to recognize the first first file on the drive and it will play only that one file in a continuous loop. So that feature that I really wanted is totally useless to me. It does play music from a cell phone or MP3 player if you use the 3.5 mm stereo aux jack. The radio is pretty good, but I've yet to figure out how to save various stations. The menu is not designed very well either. I plan to replace this unit with an Android car stereo which I believe will solve the issues I have with this unit.

    walter  May 02, 2019

No subscription needed - the GPS signal comes from satellites circling the earth and are picked up by this device. No phone needed either. This unit will pick up satellites easily, but it works even better if you get a GPS antenna and connect to the GPS antenna port in the back of the unit.
    scott h  May 03, 2019
    A
No subscription or phone is needed. There are preloaded maps and the system has an integrated GPS to know where you are in relation to the map. They only cost is if you want to buy updated versions of the maps because unlike google, they are static. That means that you when road patterns change in an area due to construction your maps will be out-of-date. I havent found this to be an issue yet though.

With this fit directly into my 2004 Ford F-150 super crew cab? No cradle required? Can I use the existing wiring from my old radio with this radio? Basically plug and play?

In Crutchfield product description page for this receiver, find the Does it Fit your car? option to find even if your car is listed, if not, I would be avoiding purchasing, unless you, or you know someone who can install it for you. I looked and I could not find 2004 Ford F150 Super Crew Cab listed. When I purchased for my Camry, I had to buy the cradle as well, along with some other adapters (ex: vol/track control through streeing wheel). Advice, only if you care about GPS, it does not work, company is Europian and GPS does not work in the US. Good luck!

I put this same unit in my Chevy Trailblazer. Perfect installation using the additional vehicle wire harness adapter to preserve the factory vehicle functions. All of that went really well. However I am completely disappointed with the performance of the BOSS for sound quality and the touch screen being over sensitive. There are no GPS map usage fees for this unit. My receiver does not integrate with satellite radio, but i can guess if it did, it would definitely have subscription fees. I'm going to say most likely not. There are only certain radios that can seamlessly integrate with Ford's factory entertainment systems. You'll be able to charge your phone from it, but you won't be able to communicate with the new radio from the SYNC ports anymore. The iDataLink Maestro website can tell you which radio to buy for your vehicle, and what all their product will be able to retain. It's worth the money for good support and ease of use

If I stay in Nav mode I don't see any option to turn off the radio. When I am in unfamiliar city traffic the radio is too distracting, and I can't clearly hear the Nav directions. I need to find a simple way to turn off just the Radio and still hear the Nav.

There is a setting that will allow you to turn the radio ON or OFF when in navigation. Also the navigation voice volume is adjustable if you are playing the radio.

Yes. You can listen to the radio or music from Micro SD card and be in Navigation mode. You need to choose first radio or Music. Set it up and then go to the Navigation- you will stay in Navigation mode and on the screen will be you rout but music still play. All the directions you could hear and see on the screen.

I own a 07 Wrangler but did not put this kit on my jeep. You could either use a relocation bracket to move the license plate to the center of the spare or use a different camera type and mount to the underside of the bumper or hitch receiver if you dont use it.

Hi Ernie,, I don't think the camera needs to be hooked up the the rear lights. I didn't install the camera because it is designed to be attached to the license plate frame and on my vehicle that just gives me a view of the back of my bike rack. The unit does go to a back up camera screen when I shift to reverse and It says no signal detected because the camera is not plugged in. It also has an additional AV input for a camera or whatever. The camera does require power though so the back up lights would be a good choice. I put the GPS antenna on the dash up against the windshield and it has worked fine. I have a Dodge Caravan and I don't think the supplied cable was long enough to make it to the back where you usually see the GPS antenna.
    eric  Apr 11, 2018

The back up camera connects to the rear back up light wire. On my Subaru it was a simple connection. The GPS antenna attached to a metal bar in the dash behind the radio on my Subaru and the reception is fine. No need to run it through the roof. Again it was a easy connection.
    js  Apr 10, 2018
    A
You will need to connect it to the rear lights for power. The provided cables to connect to the stereo itself are video only. Which is the reason I haven't gotten around to installing mine yet. The antenna for navigation can stay on your dash. It is a tiny 'box'. I used a 3M adhesive strip to hold it in place on my dash above the radio. As long as you have it forward enough, closer to the windshield, it should have plenty line-of-site.
    christopher  Apr 08, 2018
    A
If you hook the back-up camera to the rear lights, that is when it will start getting power. Personally, I found some accessory power and just switch the unit to camera mode when I need it. I did so that way I could use the camera when towing or off-roading and be able to check out what's behind me when I'm not in reverse. For the GPS antenna, I put it on the drivers side, as far forward as possible, on the roof. Then I pulled the molding on the windshield, ran it down to the door where there was a hole large enough to get from the outside of the windshield to the inside of the door frame, then it went under the dash and to the unit. Once the molding was put back into place everything was sealed up nicely.

Hi Backup camera needs to be wired to whatever wire feeds your backup lights then run RCA cable to head unit . For GPS antenna , I mounted it near the mirror on the inside then tucked wire along front headliner then down behind "A" pillar into dash back to head unit . Be careful not to pinch or damage that wire as it will render GPS inop . Good luck hope this helped !

First I put my GPS antenna on the dash in the middle by the windshield. As far as the camera is concerned the trigger is the reverse lights, but you can use anything as a trigger, etc. a push button on the dash or a toggle switch.

The Boss Receiver has auxiliary Audio-Visual input jacks (red, yellow and white) that will support devices that have the appropriate RCA plug-end outputs. If the satellite radio has an audio output, male RCA plug that can be connected into the corresponding input of the Boss Receiver, I suspect that the audio will be "piped-in" and out to the speakers.

You can check to see if this will fit your vehicle by using our Outfit My Car tool: http://www.crutchfield.com/car/carselector.aspx For additional details on fit or installation please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and give you the details on if this will fit and what you will need for an installation in your vehicle.

    Q
Did anyone have to cut a support bracket to get the radio to fit? Looking for a 2005 chevy Colorado. Wondering if that bracket that needs to be cut, is important.
