Features

Dynamic Balance Drivers: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion. Using just the right materials enables Polk to eliminate issues that reduce speaker performance and tune out performance-robbing resonances before they occur. Dynamic Balance ensures a rich, clean, full-range sound no matter what you're listening to. The Polk Signature S50 floor-standing loudspeaker incorporates a Dynamic Balance two-way driver array with one 1" tweeter and two 5.25" woofers.

  • Hi-Res 1" Terylene Tweeter: The Signature S50 floor-standing loudspeaker utilizes Polk's newly designed 1" Terylene tweeter to deliver clear and detailed high-end response for realistic reproduction of vocals and instruments. It will support high frequencies up to 40kHz to perfectly reproduce the latest high-resolution audio files with improved audio extension, earning Hi-Res Audio Certification.
  • Dual 5.25" Mica-Reinforced Polypropylene Woofers: The Signature S50 floor-standing speaker employs two 5.25" Dynamic Balance low distortion mica-reinforced polypropylene cone woofers for clean, clear bass, better linearity, and increased dynamic midrange and midbass. This mica-reinforced polypropylene woofers feature butyl rubber surrounds, massive ceramic motor structures, and high-temperature Conex fiber spiders that combine to create drivers of exceptionally high efficiency, for clean, clear bass, better linearity, lower distortion, and greater durability.

Power Port Technology: The Signature S50 floor-standing incorporates Polk's Power Port technology with a specially designed down-firing port. Power Port technology smoothly transition air flow from inside the speaker into your listening area for deep, extended bass impact while minimizing turbulence and distortion. Polk's patented Power Port technology delivers 3dB more bass response than a traditional ported speaker. Because the port is located on the bottom of the floor-standing speaker, its not necessary to position to the loudspeaker a certain amount of feet from wall - giving you greater placement flexibility.

Non-Resonant Enclosure: The floor-standing speaker's strong, rigid and acoustically inert enclosure reduces unwanted internal standing waves for less audible coloration. And non-resonant Meddite MDF construction, extra bracing, and a thick front baffle ensure a more lifelike sound. The enclosure's curved edges not only look cool, they reduce standing waves inside the cabinet for less audible coloration. The enclosure features a beautiful black washed walnut finish.

Anti-Diffraction Magnetic Grille: The Signature S50 includes an anti-diffraction magnetic grille for unaltered sound. The integrated magnets make it easy to attach and remove the grille from the floor-standing speaker.

Two-Way Crossover: The floor-standing speaker employs a high-performance two-way crossover array (2.5kHz) for seamless blending and optimum time alignment of the tweeter & woofers, creating a lifelike soundstage.

Dual 5-Way Binding Posts: The floor-standing loudspeaker has two sets of 5-way binding posts connected by jumpers. Using the dual 5-way binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers. The 5-way binding posts will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and banana plugs (single or dual). The speaker terminals are color coded for easy identification between positive (red) and negative (black).

Dual-Floor Compatible Feet: Customized for improved stability and bass coupling to the floor, the floor-standing loudspeaker's feet are designed for both carpet and hard floors. The feet come pre-installed and should not be removed.

Applications & Placement: The Signature S50 floor-standing speakers can be used as front and/or surround speakers in a home theater setup. They can also be used in a simple stereo application. If your AV receiver offers built-in bass management, the S50 should be set to "Large" for an unfiltered, full-range audio signal.

  • Placement for Front Speakers: As a pair of front speakers in a home theater or stereo setup, create an equilateral triangle between the speakers and the listening position - with the speakers placed as far apart from one another as the listeners are sitting from them.
  • Placement for Surround Speakers: As surround speakers, the S50 should be placed on a side wall slightly behind the listening position. If you cannot place the speakers on the side walls, position them on the rear wall just behind the listening area.

Signature Series: Polk designed its Signature Series of loudspeakers to bring a big surround sound and a live music experience into the comfort of your living room at an affordable price. Featuring Hi-Res certification with a new high-resolution Terylene tweeter, redesigned Dynamic Balance drivers, precision crossovers, an anti-diffraction magnetic grille, modern cabinet styling and exclusive Power Port bass enhancing technology, Polk's Signature series loudspeakers deliver crystal clear highs, detailed midrange, and deep bass; plus they look great in almost any decor. The Signature Series by Polk consists of two center-channel speakers, three bookshelf loudspeakers, and three tower speakers.

Note: You may also want to add one of Polk Audio's powered subwoofers (sold separately) for even more bass response.

Recommendations. Amp is Yamaha WXA-50. My use case is a Bedroom/Bath system. I am torn between the Polk Audio Signature S50 & Polk Audio Signature S55. Both have similar Freq response. The main difference I see is the drivers. 5.25" Vs. 6.5". I feel the 6.5" for be better long term and better low end response?

Either will work well. I chose S50's to go with my bedroom Yamaha S501 amp and a Denon Professional DN-300Z (all 7 different digital music sources in 1u of space) for my 11'x13' bedroom and found it had stunning power and way more usable depth than the specs indicate (room size matters too: S50's couple perfectly with my room size with no standing waves). I got these because I had only 8" between a very large heavy dresser and the door swing, and these were all that cleared the door. This all said, larger cones will move more air but I think the difference in small to medium spaces like mine would be negligible (and in either case, if you want the lowest audible 6-8 Hz you can later get a Definitive Technologies Cube like I eventually did-it will give you even more depth than S60's would). All this said, keep ANY conventional audio gear away from moisture and high humidity. RN

I'm no expert, but I'd say you are on the right track if you are not wanting to add any subs. I use a 10" and a 12" sub with my setup and love it. Having subs lets the speakers do the other work, mids and highs, more efficiently, which makes for better sound. But again, without subs, yes....I'd go for the larger drivers in the S55.

This is a single speaker. I ordered two to use as my front speakers. They sound great and are an excellent value.

They come as one each, so you need to order Qty 2. Hope that helps.

Q
In order to utilize this speaker do you need an audio receiver that is rated for 30 to 40K HZ?
samuel  Sep 27, 2020

A
These speakers can be used on receivers that are rated for less frequencies than this speaker can produce. They will work with the frequencies they do get
jason  Oct 19, 2020 (Staff)
A
I have no idea why you would need those specs. The normal 20HZ-20,000HZ into at least 50 watts a side should be fine for most rooms, as these speakers go to about 90 dB at only one watt. You do want to go down to 20HZ on your electronics if possible (you may not be able to get there if you're using a Harmon Kardon Bluetooth unit to give you Bluetooth as those only go down to 30HZ, but I can attest to these speakers going WAY lower than they are rated at 33HZ in a 158 square foot room, so no subwoofer is needed (and a lot of modern music goes down very low so you will want to be able to get down deep).
richard  Oct 16, 2020
A
These speakers don't seem to produce that low of a frequency. Added a subwoofer to get the low bass.
jeffrey  Oct 15, 2020

Not sure this helps, but my speakers are attached to a Denon AVR-S640H
chris  Oct 15, 2020
A
Good question. If you don't have a "top end" receiver, these speakers will still sound great. They reproduce the signal they receive. Of course, the better the signal, the better the sound. Overall, if you are on a budget and want to gradually upgrade your system (speakers, receiver, etc.), then you can't go wrong with these. They will give you a full range sound over a decent sound stage. I've paired mine with a new Denon receiver (also from Crutchfield) and was saving up for a subwoofer. BUT, considering my house is small and the power ports are directed to the floor, I don't need a sub with these (!!!).

I always work with an advisor on any of my system purchases. They will pair your speakers to the proper receiver. I added some Klipsch in ceiling speakers and Polk center channel and Klipsch bass. They paired me perfectly with a Denon AR with bluetooth that Im very happy with. I recently bought some out door speakers and bluetooth AR receiver and my advisor made sure everything paired correctly....again happy I used the advisor

Q
I'm not to sure what bi wireing is but, I've seen a lot of people say they have there s50's bi wired. What does it do exactly? And I also have a pair of jbl's with dual 10s and they also have four terminal's , so my question is what does bi wireing do and how do you do it
kody1  Mar 24, 2018

A
Basically you are delivering twice the power to your speaker. It's easy to do. Just run 2 wires from the receiver output and connect one to each terminal. You will get a much fuller sound from your speaker
william  Apr 04, 2018
A
Separating the amplified power source to high/midrange from the woofers. It theoretically should produce better sounds with less distortion. To do it, you need to remove the copper bridge connecting two binding posts, connected each of the binding post set directly to the applied power source. Personally I think it's an overkill for these speakers due to the driver size.
kuo  Apr 04, 2018
A
When you bi=wire your speakers you are sending your signal to the woofer and the tweeter separately. Polk tells you how to do it in the speaker manual. Essentially, you pull the chrome jumper that connects the two speaker terminals for each speaker in the box. At your amplifier or receiver, or whatever, take a speaker cable and twist the ends together on one end and connect that to the positive terminal. At the other end (SPEAKER END) connect one wire to the upper terminal and one to the lower terminal. Do the same for the negative terminal (black terminal), Effectively, it bypasses a lot of circuitry in the speaker by doing this and it made a tremendous difference in my S50;s. They a;ready sounded good, but once I bi wired them they became much more refined and definitive sounding. Hope this helped.

Wood substrate wrapped in a very legit looking vinyl wrap. You would never know they were veneer. As a wood worker it was the first thing I looked at. Very convincing, awesome sound.

Q
Is this a three way speaker ?
garrett  Dec 15, 2018
6 answers
A
It is a three driver system, the two 5.25" drivers are identical in scope. All three drivers of course are wired to the crossover network, quite well I might add. The 5.25" drivers handle mid and low range frequencies, but are "twins". Bottom line, it is a very well engineered design, and the 1" patented tweeter with very high range extension provide credentials for Hi-Res certification. You, will not be disappointed!
mark  Dec 18, 2018
A
I think it is 2- way, in that it is just the number of speakers pictured; (2) @ 4.5" and the tweeter. The space in the cabinet below the speakers allows bass to develop and there is a port on the bottom. I have been very happy with these speakers, and highly recommend them. They had more bass than I would have thought. I do use a subwoofer, but they would have been adequate without one. I listen to fusion, jazz, rock, classic rock, etc...moderate to volumes. They are run by a Yamaha RX3V77 amp in a room that is 16'x24' with a vaulted ceiling.
vernon  Dec 16, 2018

No it is a two way speaker, but the Power Port and ability to bi-wire the speaker produces a very clean tight bass and very accurate sound. Very pleased with these speakers.

I think it is a 4 way speaker, I sound is amazing you will be happy! Clear sounding with crisp highs & lows. Highly recommend.

Yep
kathleen  Dec 15, 2018
A
Short answer is..NO. But there is no distortion for the 5.25" woofers acting as both bass and mid-range. And the downward firing port gives you gresmat bass response. I actually replacd a pair of 3 ways, with 12" woofers and these Polk sound much better and have better clarity. Oh yea and the cabinet is beautiful. Hope this helps with a decision.
