About the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III Kit

Deia Z.

Complete creative freedom

I'm a big fan of Olympus mirrorless cameras — in fact, I own two of them. The Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III offers full control for experienced photographers, while making advanced shooting techniques accessible to beginners. So no matter what level you're on, you (or the camera) can easily dial in the right settings for nearly any subject and scene. As an experienced photographer myself, my own OM-D is a breath of fresh air. I love how portable it is. And that it gives me easy access to all the settings I'd want to use, plus a few fun extras.

4K movie recording

The E-M10 Mark III records movies in 4K or Full HD. Monitor Mode lets you connect an external display to the camera's HDMI output so you can monitor video recording on a larger screen.

Straightforward shooting

Intuitive features make the E-M10 Mark III easy for anyone to use. You can focus and shoot with the shutter button or the touchscreen. The screen tilts upward or downward so you can frame your shots from different angles.

Capture things your phone camera can't

When it comes to photographing fast motion or dimly lit scenes, the E-M10 Mark III leaves your phone in the dust. Its fast 121-point autofocus system locks onto your subject and tracks it throughout the image plane, so you can fire off a series of burst shots (up to 8.6 frames per second) to capture any kind of action.

The camera's advanced five-axis image stabilization compensates for different kinds of camera movement to effectively reduce image blur. This feature also lets you get better shots in low light and minimizes camera shake in your videos.

A low-profile, go-anywhere lens

The included M. Zuiko 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 EZ lens is a mid-range pancake zoom that's perfect for everyday use. Great for landscapes and portraits, its short minimum focus distance makes it an excellent choice for close-ups too.

The lens's large maximum aperture gives you dreamy background blur to emphasize your subject. Its Movie & Stills Compatible (MSC) autofocus system and electronic zoom mechanism give you near silent control so you won't hear it working when you're shooting video with sound.

Share instantly and expand your control with Wi-Fi

The E-M10 Mark III's built-in Wi-Fi lets you upload and share your photos and movies instantly. You'll also have access to the free Olympus Image Share app on your phone or tablet. The app lets you apply the same in-camera filters and effects on your device. You can use your device as a Wi-Fi remote to control zoom and exposure settings, select your autofocus area, activate the self-timer, and release the shutter.

The smartphone must be running the Olympus Image Share (OI.Share) application, available from Google Play for Android devices (version 4.4 and up) and from iTunes for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch (iOS 9.0 or later). In addition, you can add location information to your images when using a smartphone with a GPS function. The wireless LAN function on the camera cannot be used to connect to a home or public access point.

Image Recording Formats: The E-M10 Mark III records digital still images in JPEG format, as well as RAW uncompressed images. RAW images can be processed into JPEG files in the camera or using the supplied software. You can record up to 30 seconds of audio with still images in WAV format. Movies are recorded in MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 with PCM stereo audio at a 48 kHz sampling rate.

  • Color Creator: produces colors using the color creator
  • Custom: lets you select one of the above modes, set the parameters, and register the setting.
  • Art Filter: Uses Art Filter settings (listed above)

Focus Modes: The E-M10 Mark III features a fast, contrast type auto focus system. You can select Single-AF (focuses when shutter button is pressed halfway), Continuous-AF (always focusing), or Manual (turning the focus ring). You can also fine-adjust the focus manually by turning the focus ring after AF is performed in the S-AF mode. If you have a moving subject, you can use the AF Tracking feature. In this mode, the camera will track and maintain focus on the subject while the shutter button is held halfway.

Auto-Focus Target: The camera has 121 Auto-Focus targets for focusing on the subject. In the All-Target AF mode, the camera automatically chooses from the full set of the 121 AF targets. In the Single-Target AF mode, you can manually select one AF target for accurately focusing on the subject after composing the shot. The Group Target mode lets you select a group of nine AF targets, and the camera chooses the specific target for focusing.

AF Targeting Pad: When enabled, you can select the AF target by touching the area on the right side of the monitor during viewfinder photography. You can touch the monitor and slide your finger to position the AF target. The AF Targeting Pad is turned on/off by double-tapping the monitor.

ISO Settings: The sensitivity can be set automatically or manually. The manual ISO sensitivity ranges from LOW (equivalent to approximately ISO 100), ISO 200 to ISO 25600, with 1/3 EV steps.

White Balance: Color reproduction depends upon light conditions. You can choose from the following options for setting the white balance:

  • Auto WB: For General Use, used for most light conditions
  • Preset WB: You can choose from the following presets:
    • Outdoors (Clear): for shooting outdoors on a clear day, for sunset/sunrise, or fireworks (5300 K color temp)
    • Outdoors (Shadow): for shooting outdoors in the shadows on a clear day (7500 K color temp)
    • Outdoors (Cloudy): for shooting outdoors on a cloudy day (6000 K color temp)
    • Tungsten: for shooting under a tungsten light (3000 K color temp)
    • Fluorescent: for shooting under fluorescent lighting (4000 K color temp)
    • Flash: for flash shooting (5500 K color temp)
  • Custom: Color temperature set in the custom white balance menu (between 2000K and 14000K)
  • One-Touch: Color temperature set by the one-touch WB method

Sequential Shooting: In addition to shooting single frames, the E-M10 Mark III can also shoot images continuously. When Sequential H is selected, photos are taken at approximately 8.6 frames per second for as long as the shutter button is pressed. Focus, exposure, and white balance are fixed at the first shot. The maximum number of frames you can record is 22 RAW, and 36 JPEG. Sequential L takes photos at about 4.8 fps while the shutter button is held down. Focus and exposure are fixed according to the options selected for AF mode and AEL/AFL.

Self-Timer: The Self-Timer lets you take pictures after a preset amount of time. You can choose from 2 seconds or 12 seconds. You can also set up a custom self-timer, choosing the number of frames (1-10), time of delay to first shot (1-30 seconds), and interval between multiple shots (0.5, 1, 2, 3).

Bulb/Live Time Shooting: The E-M10 Mark III can take extra long exposures with bulb and time shooting. When the camera is set to Bulb, the shutter remains open as long as the shutter button stays pressed. In Time Photography, the shutter opens when the shutter button is pressed all the way down and released. The exposure ends when the shutter button is pressed and released a second time. Use of a tripod and shooting remotely (using OI.Share) are highly recommended for bulb shooting.

Time-Lapse Photography: The camera can be set to shoot automatically with a set time lapse, to be viewed as individual photos or as a time-lapse movie. This feature is only available in the P/A/S/M shooting modes. You can set the total number of frames (1-999), start waiting time (1 second to 24 hours), interval time (1 second to 24 hours), and settings for time lapse movie (4K, FHD, HD, and frame rate). If either the start waiting time or shooting interval is set to longer than 1 minute 30 seconds, the monitor and camera power will turn off after 1 minute. Ten seconds before shooting, the power will automatically turn on again.

Flash Modes: The E-M10 Mark III comes with a pop-up flash. You can select from several flash modes: Auto, Flash On, Red-eye reduction flash, Slow synchronization (1st curtain), Slow sync (1st curtain) with Red-eye reduction, Slow synchronization (2nd curtain), Manual flash, and Flash off. Some flash modes are not available for all shooting modes. You can also manually set the intensity of the flash to full (1/1)to 1/64 power.

External Flash: The E-M10 Mark III has a hot shoe for attaching an optional external flash unit, such as the Olympus FL-50R, FL-36R, FL-20, FL-14, FL-300R, FL-600R, FL900R, STF-8, FL-LM3. These external flash units communicate with the camera, allowing you to control the camera's flash modes with various available flash control modes, such as TTL-AUTO. The units listed above have a remote control mode that can be used for wireless flash photography.

Bracketing: To increase your chances of getting the perfect exposure in difficult shooting conditions, you can set the camera to take a number of photos at different exposure values for each frame. Frames are shot at optimum exposure, plus pictures adjusted in the opposite directions of exposure. You can perform bracketing in the following ways: AE Bracketing, Focus Bracketing, and HDR (Auto Composite).

Metering Modes: There are 5 ways to measure the subject brightness:

  • Digital ESP: Camera measures light levels and calculates the differences in 324 separate areas of the image. Face detection uses Digital ESP metering.
  • Center-Weighted Average: Camera provides the average metering between the subject and background lighting, placing more weight on the subject in the center.
  • Spot: Camera meters a very small area around the center of the subject.
  • Spot with Highlight Control: If overall background is bright, the camera shifts toward over-exposure so white areas don't turn gray.
  • Spot with Shadow Control: If overall background is dark, the camera shifts toward under-exposure so black areas don't turn gray.

Face Priority/Eye Priority: The camera will detect people's faces in the frame and adjust the focus and metering automatically. You can also add Eye Priority so that the autofocus system selects the eye closest to the camera for face-priority AF.

Multiple Exposure: The E-M10 Mark III lets you create multiple exposures in a single frame. After taking the first shot, the image is superimposed on the monitor so you can compose the second shot. The second shot is overlayed on the first to create the multiple exposure.

Digital Level: To ensure that your pictures are level perfect, the camera has a digital level gauge that can be viewed in the monitor and the electronic viewfinder when the shutter button is pressed halfway.

Photo Playback: You can play back images one at a time, or in an index display of 4, 9, 25, or 100. You can also display images recorded on the memory card by date (calendar display). While in single image playback, the image can be magnified to 2x, 3x, 5x, 7x, 10x, or 14x for a closer look.

Playback On TV: The E-M10 Mark III allows you to play back your still images or movies on a TV. The camera has a Micro HDMI (Type D) output for connecting to an HDTV. Output resolution can be set to 4K, 1080p, 720p, and 480p/576p. No Micro HDMI-to-HDMI cable is included.

HDMI Control: When HDMI Control is set to "On", the camera can be operated by a TV remote control when it is connected to the TV via HDMI. The TV must support HDMI control. During single-frame playback, you can display or hide the information display and the index display.

PictBridge Printing Capability: Using the supplied USB cable, you can connect this camera directly to a PictBridge-compliant printer, regardless of brand.

Power Options: The E-M10 Mark III is powered by the supplied BLS-50 Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery (7.2 volts 1210mAh). The battery charges in approximately 3.5 hours in the supplied BCS-5 battery charger. The BLS-50 battery is good for approximately 330 shots on a single charge. When shooting movies, a fully charged battery will power the camera for approximately 80 minutes (typical) or 140 continuously.
