High-fidelity Class AB amp

Whether you're talking about audio products for home, car, or studio, the name Focal always comes up when the conversation centers around sound quality. Their Auditor Series AP 4340 4-channel amp makes a great candidate for powering any high-performance car audio system. This amp puts out 70 watts RMS per channel with very low distortion and very wide frequency response, so you can be sure your speakers or subs will sound their best.

4-, 3-, or 2-channel operation

When you're using the AP 4340 to power four speakers, you can use the high-pass filters on the front and rear channels to eliminate the low bass for a cleaner sound. If you want to run full-range speakers and a sub, you'd use the high-pass filters on your front channels, then bridge the rear channels together to drive your sub, using the low-pass filter to optimize the bass.

In 2-channel mode, the AP 4340 puts out 190 watts RMS per channel, so you could use it to power a pair of high-performance speakers or subwoofers. A selectable bass boost lets you extend the low-frequency response.

CEA-2006 Compliant: CEA-2006 is a system of testing and measurement methods for mobile audio amplifiers. This voluntary standard advocates a uniform method for measuring an amplifier's RMS power output and signal-to-noise ratio. CEA-2006 standards allow consumers to compare amplifiers on an equal basis.

Amp Overview: The Focal AP-4340 is a full-range Class AB 4-channel amplifier. The amp can be configured for four-channel, three-channel, or two-channel operation. It has built-in crossovers that can be configured for high-pass or low-pass operation.

Power Output: The amplifier has the following power output:

  • 70 watts RMS x 4 at 4 ohms
  • 95 watts RMS x 4 at 2 ohms
  • 190 watts RMS x 2 at 4 ohms bridged

Protection Circuits: The amplifier is equipped with protection circuits for the following: short circuits, low impedance, DC output, thermal overload, reversed polarity, or over/under voltage.

Controls

Level Control (Gain): The Focal AP-4340 is equipped with line level inputs. There are separate rotary gain controls for the front (Channels 1&2) and rear (Channels 3&4) that can be adjusted by a standard flat-head screwdriver (not supplied). The low-level input sensitivity is 160mV (minimum).

Selectable Crossovers: The amp features high-quality crossovers that can be configured as Low-pass, High-pass, or Full Range. There are independent crossover controls for the front and rear channels:

  • Channels 1&2: The crossover for channels 1+2 can be set to full range or high-pass with a 2-way switch. It has a variable cutoff frequency from 60Hz to 1.2kHz.
  • Channels 3&4: The crossover for channels 3+4 can be set to full range, low-pass, or high-pass with a 3-way switch. In low-pass mode, the cutoff frequency varies from 50Hz to 250Hz. In the high-pass mode, you can set the cutoff frequency between 100Hz and 2.2kHz.

Bass Boost: The AP-4340 has a bass boost that can be set to 0dB (off), +6dB, or +12dB. No center frequency for the bass boost is given.

Connections

Screw Terminals: The amplifier is equipped with screw terminal strips for all speaker and power connections. A flat head or Phillips-head screwdriver (not supplied) can be used to tighten or loosen the screws. The sizes of the screw terminals are as follows:

Power/Ground: The screw terminals for connecting the power and ground cables are 0.475" wide. It is recommended that you use 8-gauge power and ground wire for this amp. A 0.335" wide screw terminal is provided for the turn-on lead (18-gauge wire is sufficient).

Fuses: The amp comes with two 15A ATO (blade) fuses installed in the amplifier, plus two spares. You should also install a 30A fuse on the power wire within 18" of the battery.

Speaker Outputs: The amp includes four pairs of 0.335" wide screw terminals for the speaker output. Markings are provided for bridged connections.

Signal Input: The amplifier features two pairs of stereo RCA inputs for connecting the input signal from the source unit to the amp via RCA cables. The amp will accept line-level signals only (minimum 160mV).

Signal Output: In addition to the 4-channel RCA inputs, the AP-4340 offers a stereo line output. This output is the same signal as the RCA input on Channels 1&2, and can be used to daisy-chain the signal to another amplifier.

Eight gauge is what fits no largerEnter an answer to this question.
jeff  Jan 03, 2022
A
I was using 8 gauge, which can carry 60 amps for 16 feet, with a pair of 6 x 9's and it worked fine. If you're going to push something that use all the Amy's power then use 4 gauge.
walter pettus  Jan 02, 2022

Q
Would I be able to connect a bass control knob to this amp?
dominic  Dec 15, 2021
1 answer
A
This amp is not designed to work with a remote level controller. However, it may be possible to install other gear that works with remote level controllers or other gear that can allow this amp to work with a universal remote level controller like this one: www.crutchfield.com/p_142RLC/item.html I recommend contacting an advisor to get a personal recommendation

Q
How do I wire this to a pair of front component speakers and a single sub. It says it can do 3 channel mode but nowhere does it list the power in 3 channels. I need to know what power sub to buy?
anthony  May 17, 2021
2 answers
A
When in bridged mode across 2 channels, it looks like RMS 190W @ 4 ohms. This would be power to your channel to your sub.
adam  Dec 17, 2021
A
You must match the power output of the amplifier to the RMS power for the subwoofer
rodney  Jun 20, 2021
Q
I want to connect 2 channels of this amp to a set of GTO 609C which have a 3 ohms impedance and can handle 90w RMS. How many watts RMS at 3 ohms will this amp produce? Is this a good match?

A
I honestly am not qualified to answer a technical question like this. I would think the fine staff at Crutchfield could answer it. I have it paired with four Focal speakers and can only said that I have been impressed with all Focal products I have ever bought.

Q
I would like to connect this to my factory radio, power 4 speakers AND use the preamp outputs to a powered subwoofer. Will this amplifier do these things?

yes it can connect.. but I didn't like the sound of the amp.. I sent it back..
lamont  Apr 14, 2020
A
You would have to send the speaker level outputs from your factory head unit to a line-level adapter which you can then hook up RCA's to and run to the amplifier. From there the amplifier preouts can be used. I tapped into the speaker outputs from my factory head unit and into the speaker level inputs on a Pioneer digital EQ. From there I connected the EQ to my amplifiers with RCA's.

I use this amp to power four Focal component speakers and a Rockford Fosgate powered sub. Sounds good!

How many amps external fuse should I put for this amplifier 80 amps or 20 amps??
mohammed  Mar 13, 2019

I only used the fuse that came with the amp and the fuse that came with the wiring kit. All good so far.
kenneth l  Mar 14, 2019
A
20 amp fuse.
james  Mar 13, 2019
A
I think I use 80 but I will check and send you another message but this amp is the real deal
jasper  Mar 13, 2019
A
The amp comes with (2) 15 amp fuses, I would use a 30 amp fuse near the battery if this is your only amp your powering with that run.
dan  Mar 13, 2019
A
I ended up selling the amp and upgrading to an alpine amp with more power.
van  Mar 13, 2019
Q
How many ampere fuse to install for this amplifier is 80 A fuse good?
mohammed  Mar 13, 2019
3 answers
A
unit comes with fuses. a 30 amp fuse in line is preferred over 80. the unt will cook before an 80 amp fuse blows. I threw the amp in the dumpster as it worked one time then blew a channel.
stephen thom  Mar 13, 2019
A
The specs says what's the Amp rating. I used that info for the fuse. I believe it was 15, or25, but check. I know it wasn't 80 as my car is Prius and 80 is too high.
tomas  Mar 13, 2019
A
It only needs 30-40 Amp fuse

Q
Can this power 1 set of ps165 v1 and 1 10â?? kicker comp subs?
louie  Feb 02, 2018
2 answers
A
It will power it but not to its full potential. Im not sure you can bridge 2 channels to 1 channel on this amp
jayson  Feb 02, 2018
A
I don't see a Kicker comp 10a anywhere when I do a search but yeah if its around 150 watts RMS and you have the right ohm sub then it'd definitely power that whole system. I'm running it to power a set of JL Audio C-2 6.5" coaxials in the rear running at 4 ohms and a set of Focal K2 Power KRX2 165 components in the front running at 2 ohms and it powers them great. It gets so loud I can't even turn it up to 3/4 volume and leave it for very long. I was surprised at how well it does.
