Our take on the Onkyo C-7030

CD playback has been around for decades now. What once was regarded as a high-fidelity revolution has been dismissed or forgotten thanks to a new generation of playback possibilities. But if you've spent years painstakingly acquiring and maintaining a CD collection, you know the sonic capabilities of this still-relevant format. So give your CDs the love they deserve. The Onkyo C-7030 is a high-performance CD player — not a multi-purpose video device — designed solely to make CDs sound their best.

Show your CDs some love

CD playback has been around for decades now. What once was regarded as a high-fidelity revolution has been dismissed or forgotten thanks to a new generation of playback possibilities. But if you've spent years painstakingly acquiring and maintaining a CD collection, you know the sonic capabilities of this still-relevant format. So give your CDs the love they deserve. The Onkyo C-7030 is a high-performance CD player — not a multi-purpose video device — designed solely to make CDs sound their best.

Designed with audiophiles in mind

So how does the C-7030 squeeze every drop of audio greatness out of your CDs? By reducing the opportunities for signal degradation so your music remains as sonically pure as possible. It starts with a large, custom-built transformer to provide plenty of clean power. The high-precision clock minimizes timing errors, or jitter, as the signal enters the digital-to-analog conversion. The D/A converter is a high-quality Wolfson 24-bit/192 kHz DAC, and Onkyo's Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry™ further ensures a sonically pure signal by reducing pulse noise at the conversion stage. It may sound complicated, but the gist is that Onkyo has gone the extra mile to ensure your CDs sound as clean and clear as possible.

The C-7030 will play standard CDs as well as MP3 and WMA CDs and CD-Rs/RWs. The heavy-duty chassis of this beefy 11.7-pound player is designed to prevent unwanted vibration and resonance. And the dedicated headphone amplifier circuitry includes volume control, so you can plug your favorite headphones directly into the C-7030 without using a separate amp or receiver.

Product Research

Disc Compatibility: The Onkyo C-7030 single-disc CD player will play Audio CDs and CD-R/CD-RW discs (12cm/8cm). It will also supports playback of MP3 (32-320kbps; 32/44.1/48 kHz) and WMA (32-192kbps; 32/44.1/48kHz) files recorded onto CD-R/RW discs in ISO9660 Level 2. The CD player can recognize up to 99 folders and up to 499 files per MP3/WMA disc.

VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry): In conventional digital-to-analog conversion methods, it's impossible to completely remove noise. This noise taints the analog signal and ultimately degrades the sound emitted from your speakers. With Onkyo's VLSC, though, data is continuously sampled between two discrete points (via a signal comparison generator) and the difference is joined with analog vectors in real time to produce a smooth output waveform. The VLSC digital-to-analog conversion method results in an accurate, virtually pulse noise-free audio signal that faithfully reproduces the acoustic detail and subtle nuances of all your audio sources, and breathes life into digital media.

Wolfson 24-bit/192kHz DAC: A high-quality Wolfson digital-to-analog converter works to optimize audio performance of the C-7030. This DAC performs advanced 24-bit signal processing and supports sampling rates of up to 192 kHz, while displaying high resistance to clock jitter. With this advanced onboard DAC, the C-7030 delivers a pristine conversion of digital signals into analog audio output.

Precision Clock (+/-10ppm):  The C-7030 boasts a precise clocking mechanism that controls and coordinates the timing of all digital signal processes (like how a conductor directs and coordinates the individual instruments of an orchestra). The C-7030 uses a state-of-the-art crystal oscillator that achieves a frequency deviation of ±10 ppm, much lower than with a conventional oscillator.

Custom-Designed Massive EI Transformer: Powering the CD Player, is a massive, custom-built transformer that provides a clean and stable power supply.

High-Rigidity, Anti-Resonant Chassis: Build quality of the Onkyo C-7030 starts from the ground up with a highly rigid, 1.6mm thick, fully flat chassis and solid aluminum front-panel that provides excellent protection against shelf-borne vibrations.

Front-Panel LCD: The Onkyo C-7030 features a front-panel LCD which can display the following disc information - Time Elapsed/Remaining, File/Folder Name, Song Title, Artist Name, Album Name, and Sampling-/Bit-rate. You can adjust the brightness of the display from Normal, Dim, Dimmer.

Remote Control: The Onkyo C-7030 single-disc CD player includes an IR remote control for wireless operation. There are also basic playback controls located on the player's front-panel.

Direct Track Access: The numeric keypad (0-9, >10) of the remote control can be used to directly access a track or file on a disc.

File/Folder Mode: During MP3/WMA playback, you can choose to search for files (songs) within a folder or on an entire disc.

25-Track Memory Playback: You can create a playlist of up to 25 tracks/files per disc.

Random Playback: In Random playback mode, all of the files on a disc are played back in random order.

Repeat Playback: In Repeat playback mode, you can playback an entire disc repeatedly, play one track/file repeatedly, combine it with memory playback to play a playlist repeatedly, or combine it with random playback to play all tracks on a disc in random order repeatedly.

Auto Standby Function: If the CD player is left stopped for approximately 30 minutes, the power will automatically turn off, placing the unit in Standby mode. If playback is simply pause, the power will remain on even after 30 minutes have elapsed.

Analog Audio Output: The Onkyo C-7030 single-disc CD player is fitted with a set of stereo RCA analog audio outputs to connect to your home receiver.

Digital Audio Outputs: The Onkyo C-7030 features two digital audio outputs; one optical (toslink) and one coaxial (RCA). The player's digital outputs support 16-bit/44.1kHz PCM (2ch).

1/4" Headphone Jack: The Onkyo CD Player features its own built-in headphone amp with a front-panel 1/4" headphone jack and independent volume control. Connecting a set of headphones to the front-panel 1/4" jack does not mute the player's audio outputs (you will need to turn down the volume on your receiver).

RI (Remote Interactive) Terminal: The C-7030 provides two RI inputs (3.5mm) which can be connected to other RI-compatible Onkyo components. With RI (Remote Interactive) you can control the C-7030 together with your other RI-compatible Onkyo AV components from one remote control.

  • Direct Change: If the C-7030 CD player is connected to an RI-compatible Onkyo receiver, when you start playback on the C-7030, the Onkyo receiver will automatically select the C-7030 as the input source.
  • Remote Control Operation: You can control playback operation of the C-7030 by using your Onkyo receiver's remote control.

Q & A

Customer Q&A

Crutchfield asked
Why did you buy this?

I researched many players up to the $500 price point. After having had Onkyo and Integra products in the past I decided this CD player was the better investment. I've purchased items from Crutchfield since the mid 80's and they've always had great service. [ P  Oct 11, 2018 ]
For the price, this CD player appears to offer excellent sound quality and construction. [ Dennis  Oct 07, 2018 ]
Same DAC as more expensive models, same s/n ratio. Lower warranty period but expensive insurance to pay for higher priced model. Figured if I'm not happy (I doubt I will be anything but delighted), I can upgrade later. [ Arthur  Sep 17, 2018 ]
I need a CD player to pair with my Onkyo TX-8260 receiver and I am assuming that I will be able to use the same remote for both units. [ Franz  Aug 14, 2018 ]
Many positive reviews regarding the performance of this model for the price-had been using dvd or blu-ray for music cd but learned that's not the way to go. [ Michael  Aug 09, 2018 ]
I wanted a simple CD player that was in the Onkyo line of products. Reviews on this particular unit were favorable and the price was an influence too. [ Daniel  Aug 08, 2018 ]
Onkyo has had a good reputation for decades, and this struck me as very good value for the money - as the many positive reviews also suggested. [ James  Aug 05, 2018 ]
I need a good quality cd player for my bedroom system but didn't wish to pay several hundred dollars for a unit that will get limited use. I have purchased Onkyo products with satisfaction over the last 20 or so years, and Crutchfield has always provided good service and products. [ CARL  Jul 23, 2018 ]
Familiar Brand Name - Good Price - Reputable Dealer [ Phillip  Jul 22, 2018 ]
I was looking for a single disc player that would be a good match with the receiver I purchased, the Onkyo TX-RZ820 [ Bryan T.  Jul 10, 2018 ]

I have an Onkyo Home Theater primary unit and it has been fantastic and is high quality, so that experience sold me on this. Plus it was $100 less than the competition! [ Robert  Feb 18, 2018 ]
Best bang for the buck [ Evan  Feb 05, 2018 ]
Because it was the least complicated for ordering and the system looked good with a year guarantee provided [ DOLORES  Jan 09, 2018 ]
Good quality. Had them before , works well. [ Harry A.  Jan 09, 2018 ]
served my needs [ Dena  Jan 04, 2018 ]
I've been trying to find a quality portable cd player but after reading soooo many negative reviews I couldn't find one so I upgraded to a cd player unit and found this particular model. It is reasonably priced and has an added bonus of a headphone volume control. My only hesitation was the reviews about the cd door sometimes stays closed "locked"; you're unable to open the door. I'll see what happens with that issue. [ K  Jan 01, 2018 ]
Recommendation of Teddy Campbell in your Charlottesville store [ Ken  Dec 20, 2017 ]
Good rating, and dimensions fit my cabinet space best of the models available. [ William  Dec 17, 2017 ]
I already own this player and am very happy with it! Onkyo makes great products. Just bought another one of these as a gift. [ Scott  Nov 25, 2017 ]
The item, information and price was the best we have found! Thank you for FREE SHIPPING as well! [ Larry  Nov 06, 2017 ]
Good price. The on-line advice with your staff was helpful [ Todd  Nov 05, 2017 ]
A basic device with enough easy to operate options, yet should provide quality and long lasting service for years to come. My Sony CD player purchased in the previous century is getting a little long in the tooth, yet still performs adequately. Sony doesn't seem to produce these basic models anymore. Too bad. [ BOB  Oct 19, 2017 ]
Hopefully compatible and dependable performance with my Onkyo amplifier/tuner. [ James  Oct 13, 2017 ]

Purchased to replace a 15 year old Rotel CD player that is showing signs of age. I bought this same Onkyo 2 years ago for a small system we have in our vacation home and have been very pleased with the unit. It's less than one-third the price I paid for the Rotel 15 years ago so it will be interesting to listen and compare. [ ROBERT  Dec 19, 2016 ]
the other model/out of stock [ Don  Dec 15, 2016 ]
Great reviews for the Onkyo on your Crutchfield site.. [ James  Dec 13, 2016 ]
I selected the Onkyo C-7030 based on the excellent specs, despite the inexpensive price for this unit. I was prepared to spend up to $500.00 for a new CD player, but when comparing to other more expensive units, there was absolutely no reason to do so. [ Warren  Dec 10, 2016 ]
Your product advisor Garrett recommended it to me last March in an online chat when I asked about a possible replacement for my old Sony RCD-W10 CD player. I decided to hold off on the purchase until now. [ Richard  Dec 05, 2016 ]
Good quality in a single CD music player! Very satisfied with it's sound and performance so far! [ Stanley  Nov 30, 2016 ]
I bought this unit to replace an aging JVC DVD player/3 disc changer I had been using as a CD player. This time I opted for the single disc drawer, as the single disc units tend to be better quality than the changers. [ Duncan  Oct 09, 2016 ]
I have two other Onkyo items and have had zero problems and they sound great. [ BOB  Oct 03, 2016 ]

I have owned Onkyo products in the past and they are very reliable. I looked at other CD players and didn't like what they offered me, nor did the reviews give good feedback. I need a reliable CD player for my CD collection and even though I could play the CDs in my blue ray player, I want a component just for my CDs. The reviews for this player were excellent and this player is within my budget. I am hoping I won't be disappointed with my be continued!! [ Donna M.  May 01, 2016 ]
A near audiophile quality player at an affordable price. [ kent  Apr 09, 2016 ]
The specifications on this product are above average. The conversion from digital to analog was a strong selling point too. [ James  Apr 08, 2016 ]
The reviews have been very positive, and the price is unbeatable. [ LINDSEY CLYDE  Mar 25, 2016 ]
I did my research with reviews and liked the Onkyo the best [ kevin  Mar 24, 2016 ]
Really impressed with the reviews I read about this product. [ Rodney  Mar 23, 2016 ]
The review for the product and customer care reviews were excellent. Your note about your consideration for audiophiles is important to me. Music is not about plugging two buttons in your ear if you can help it. I too have an old stereo equipment, CDs, that will dovetail nicely with this product. Thanks. Looking forward to my Onkyo! Thanks. Jenny, NJ. [ Jenny  Mar 08, 2016 ]
I chose this item, because i was told it was a great product and reliable. [ JIMMIE  Mar 02, 2016 ]
I wanted a decent cd player to hook up to my old 1970's stereo. This fits the bill, with the right plugs in and out. [ Michelle  Mar 01, 2016 ]
I did extensive research on several web sites to assure that this product would give me the best quality for the dollars spent. I am looking forward to hooking up to my other Crutchfield products to see if the research paid off. I am confident that my research and your reputation for quality will pay off. [ ROBERT  Feb 24, 2016 ]
Wanted high quality CD player at modest price. [ SCOTT D  Feb 15, 2016 ]
price / performance good. [ David  Feb 11, 2016 ]
The reviews seemed good, on the whole. I only want a single disc changer. And I may well need simple-minded tech support, and Crutchfield seems to offer that. [ Catherine  Dec 29, 2015 ]
very good reviews. [ jeffery  Dec 23, 2015 ]
The audio quality is superb without a high cost. Runs flawless, and easy to read display perfect for both light and dark lighting [ BRUCE E  Dec 18, 2015 ]

13 questions already asked

The short answer is you can't adjust the sound with the remote or on the player itself. Because the output is fixed, you cannot adjust the volume and there is no bass/treble adjustment. [ MARK W  Nov 09, 2018 ]
I don't. I adjust the overall volume at my receiver (or its remote), and the headphone volume at either the CD player front panel headphone volume control, or the headphone volume control on the front of my receiver (Outlaw Audio RR2160). [ Daniel  Nov 09, 2018 ]
I think that you can not adjust any audio volume with the C-7030 remote. The audio volume is adjusted by adjusting the volume on the amp, receiver, etc that your disc player is connected to. The C-7030 provides an audio input signal, it is not an amp or a preamp. The C-7030 does have a volume control on the front for a set of headphones, but I believe that this is only controlled by the volume control and not the remote. You should check your owner's manual for detailed operation of the unit with the remote. If your sound system is fairly new, you likely have a remote for your amp which typically can control the volume level of the amp. [ STEVEN  Nov 08, 2018 ]
Sadly, this unit does not support SACD. [ jay  Sep 28, 2017 ]
yes, not a mini [ mike  Jul 28, 2017 ]
Yes it does. Also has a volume knob (min - max) for the headphones. Thanks for asking, now I know that I can use it. I never noticed it. John [ John  Jul 27, 2017 ]
yes, it has a headphone jack located on the bottom left corner. [ jay  Jul 26, 2017 ]
Yes! [ Mark  Jul 26, 2017 ]
I have enjoyed Onkyo components for many years. They are high quality, good sounding, durable pieces of sound equipment. I really like my single tray Onkyo CD player, it's very simple, includes the remote. [ John  Oct 02, 2016 ]
Although I usually use the jack on my amp this cd player output works fine with headphones. I use Bose but any quality headphones should work fine. I like this cd player. [ Richard  Oct 01, 2016 ]
This is a great playback only CD player. It reproduces really well, and will tackle any CD with clarity, fidelity and awesome sound. I recommend it highly. [ Wendy  Sep 30, 2016 ]
no problem. [ ALFREDO  Sep 30, 2016 ]
Onkyo c-7030 is great. It has everything you want. [ ALFREDO  Sep 30, 2016 ]
No, this is a CD player for a system. You will need to buy a "all in one system" that plays CD's. Think "boombox". [ BRIDGET  Sep 28, 2016 ]
You will need some type of ear phones, or you will need a pair of speakers [ RALPH D  Sep 28, 2016 ]
Unless you're planning on using headphones, this CD player isn't for you, as it doesn't have a built-in amplifier. It's an excellent unit, however! [ Brandon  Sep 28, 2016 ]
No. This is component for old-style receiver-amplifier-turntable-etc. with separate speakers. Great for replacement. For your needs, try basic $20 boom-box and replace as necessary. [ Thomas  Sep 27, 2016 ]
No, it needs to be connected to an reciever, amplifier, or home theater system. [ William  Sep 27, 2016 ]
Unfortunately not. This is just a CD player with no speakers. It would have to be attached to a receiver and/or speakers. [ Mark  Sep 27, 2016 ]
You can stack the CD player on a component amp but it isn't big enough for the turntable that I have. [ Paul  Apr 22, 2016 ]
Usually, the amplifier puts out a good bit of heat. Therefore, if you are planning on putting the CD player on top of the amp, I would not recommend it. The amplifier needs plenty of air circulation to pull the heat away (depending on power needed, etc.) [ Larry  Apr 22, 2016 ]
no do not stack. [ RALPH D  Apr 21, 2016 ]
Not sure about the dimensions of your amp and turntable, Annarmie, but I'd say yes. I have mine stacked with Amp and Tuner (both Technics) and DVR (Sony) with no issues whatsoever. From more than 5 ft away the look like a matching set. Hope this is helpful and answers your question [ Ron  Apr 21, 2016 ]
I do not know about the turntable, but I stacked a small amp on top (NAD 315BEE). [ Brandon  Apr 21, 2016 ]
Yes. I use a couple of 1 1/2 X 1 1/2 blanks of ebony to give air flow over the amp. The turntable would be on top. Gary [ Gary  Apr 21, 2016 ]
I have my Onkyo C-7030 stacked on my old Nakamichi cassette deck, so there isn't any ventilation vents being blocked. The Onkyo doesn't have any vents on top that would be blocked, so I don't see why a turntable couldn't be put on top. [ Philip F.  Apr 20, 2016 ]
The CD player puts out very little heat, however you don't want anything on top of the amp because it does get warm. [ Larry  Apr 20, 2016 ]
This would work with any stereo receiver. The receiver you buy is also dependent on the speakers you have or will buy, and their power requirements. One of the Onkyo receivers can be a good match (eg: 8050). [ MARTY  Mar 28, 2016 ]
it will work with any AMP. I have 2 cd players one I use with an ADCOM pre amp and amp the other one is a Yamaha TSR- 7790 Arthur [ ARTHUR  Mar 28, 2016 ]
Any of the newer ONKYO models would be a great fit for the 7030. The ONKYO 9010 is an integrated amp on the more entry level side. If you're looking at climbing up a bit the 9050 would be great as well. Of course any of the newer ONKYO a/v receivers would make a great partner also. The TX-SR444 would sit mid level amongst ONKYO's new line of "affordable" but very high quality a/v receivers. The ONKYO models communicate well with each other via a remote input on the back of each unit. This is a nice feature if you value needing only one remote. I do have an ONKYO a/v receiver but I chose to pair my ONKYO 7030 CD player with a MARANTZ integrated amp for a 2-channel audio set-up. When it's all said and done ONKYO is making very nice stuff right now so I'd say what you choose depends upon what your needs are. Either way, whether you go with an integrated amplifier or an a/v receiver you can't go wrong pairing the 7030 with any quality receiver, whether ONKYO, YAMAHA or MARANTZ. I generally stick with one of these three manufacturers. Hope that helps [ Derek  Mar 28, 2016 ]
Great player for the price....remote works well for me....never had a problem with It ..have fun! [ FRANK  Dec 28, 2015 ]
I don't know how the NAD compares to the Onkyo, ubt I can tell you 1) I am quite happy with this product. It plays CD's with crystal clarity. A reasonably priced CD player which (to my ears) achieves high priced performance. 2) I don't think angle remote works on this one either, but can't say definitively. In general a 30 degree side position works with remotes, but more than that is sketchy. [ GREGG  Dec 28, 2015 ]
I've had the Onkyo C7030 since 2/2014 and use it frequently. I've had no problem with it. I don't need to maintain line of sight in order for the remote to work. [ MICHAEL J  Dec 26, 2015 ]
I have been very happy with the Onkyo single CD player. Solid and has built in DAC. I added this to my vintage Onkyo stack used mainly for vinyl but I have a large CD collection. Just played the new David Gilmour CD yesterday. I've had no issues with this player and would buy again. CW [ JOHN CRAIG  Dec 26, 2015 ]
I purchased the Onkyo at the beginning of 2014. I haven't had any problems with it yet. It has gotten a lot of use. I had a older Sony that died. This Onkyo blows it away, sounds so much better. I don't think you can go wrong with the Onkyo. [ steve  Dec 26, 2015 ]
I have not heard any of the NAD CD players and thus cannot compare them directly to the Onkyo. But I can report that I returned the Onkyo because of unsatisfactory sound quality. Most of my listening is classical, and strings, for example, sounded course and gritty. I exchanged it for a Yamaha S-300. Sound is much better than the Onkyo. The remote does not seem to be sensitive to angle. In some ways it's a little clunky; the remote would be more ergonomic if the track buttons were isolated from the others. The player has no standby mode. That's not a criticism, just a description. Out of curiosity I check for upgrade candidates periodically, but I think a noticeably better player would cost at least $500. The Yamaha is very good in both sound and build quality. We've been very happy with the Onkyo but with fairly limited use as it's for a second home. We don't use the remote so I can't comment on that but the function and sound quality have been excellent. We also have a different system at our primary home with a more expensive Rotel that is now 14 years old and starting to act up and I've decided I'll replace it with the Onkyo so we are very pleased. [ ROBERT  Dec 26, 2015 ]
This unit performs nicely. The remote seems to work from an angle. I am pleased with it. This was also a replacement for a cd changer. [ Steven  Dec 26, 2015 ]
The function to choose tracks is on the remote. Just press "memory", then select the tracks you want played. [ jay  Sep 28, 2017 ]
This product is a breeze to program. If you have any trouble just call Crutchfield. They are the greatest and nicest people around! I havent had any trouble with anything i have bought from them. Talk about fast shipping you cant get any better!!! You cant go wrong with this cd player. Highly recommend this product and all products Crutchfield sales. Special shoot out to copper. Once again thanks. Randy [ RANDY  Dec 03, 2014 ]
Not sure about the programmability, but the NAD sounds so much better! I exchanged the Onkyo for the NAD. I thought it was harsh sounding. The NAD beats it hands down! [ GLENN  Dec 03, 2014 ]
I have never programed this unit, I wanted to write to you though to caution you that there is no dedicated port for a sub woofer. You will loose your B speakers (if sub has no outs) to hook up a sub. We have a TV in our bedroom and we hooked up book-shelf speakers and a sub, (all to this unit) the sound is really good for music and movie play back. Sorry I could not help with the programing however I can't imagine it being all that difficult. [ WILLIAM T  Dec 03, 2014 ]
False, the double arrow seek buttons on the player fast forward and reverse when you press and hold. [ BRUCE E  Mar 09, 2014 ]
No, it is not true. There is one set of forward and reverse buttons. Press the relevant button to move forward or backward a single track. Hold it down to fast forward or reverse. [ Thomas  Mar 08, 2014 ]
Yes Onkyo C-7030 will fast-forward with the face button. If you depress the once it goes to the next selection, but if held depressed it is fast-forward. This is pretty much industry standard. [ PHIL.  Mar 07, 2014 ]
you can control all functions from the unit you can forward and reverse without the remote hope this helps. [ ALAN  Mar 07, 2014 ]
Yes, this the case. I was surprised by this omission in design, but ultimately it has not caused me any inconvenience. I am very happy with the unit. [ RAYMOND M  Mar 07, 2014 ]
This is true it will go to the next chapter only. [ ROBERT  Mar 07, 2014 ]
yes, as far as I can tell. but don't fast forward, everything sounds good on this player, you don't want to miss anything....... [ JOSEPH A  Mar 07, 2014 ]
Unfortunately I believe that is true. [ COLIN Y  Mar 07, 2014 ]
You can go from track to track using front panel buttons. I have never used the remote on theis unit. [ STEVEN R  Mar 07, 2014 ]
Not at all. Works fine from the unit and the remote. [ RICHARD  Mar 07, 2014 ]
not true; just push and hold previous or next track buttons to fast-reverse or fast-forward during playback. [ mark  Mar 07, 2014 ]
One of the best in the price range. [ VICTOR  Mar 01, 2016 ]

Hi Alford, Thank you for this information. I have purchased the CD player from Crutchfield. Frank [ Frank  Feb 27, 2014 ]
This was easy enough to find on the web. I bought this for my brother who lives in Seattle, some 3 hours away, so I just got this of the Crutchfield site. Width: 17.1 in Depth: 12 in Height: 4 in [ MICHAEL D  Feb 26, 2014 ]
