Overview

Our take on the Oppo UDP-205

I have a lot to say about the Oppo UDP-205 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player. But in many ways, this 22-pound beast of a machine speaks for itself. If you want to maximize the picture on your 4K Ultra HD TV picture and the sound in your high-end home theater, it is hard to look past this heavy-duty, state-of-the-art player.

The best 4K picture meets high-resolution sound

I have a lot to say about the Oppo UDP-205 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player. But in many ways, this 22-pound beast of a machine speaks for itself. If you want to maximize the picture on your 4K Ultra HD TV picture and the sound in your high-end home theater, it is hard to look past this heavy-duty, state-of-the-art player.

This model offers the same top-of-the line video performance you get from Oppo's UDP-203 4K Blu-ray player — a bona fide customer favorite. But you also get several more connection options and a super-premium audio experience.

Built like a tank

The first thing you notice about the Oppo UDP-205 is the sheer size. It features a double-layered metal chassis with a brushed aluminum front panel, and it sits on a solid foundation of four machined metal feet. This practically eliminates vibration to keep the player's internal circuitry safe and its audio performance uncompromised.

Inside the Oppo UDP-205

A look at the advanced circuitry and hefty power supply found inside the Oppo UDP-205 4K Blu-ray player.

Pure power and "fan-less" ventilation

A look under the hood shows why the vitals are worth protecting. Oppo has separated the power supplies for the digital and analog circuitry to avoid any signal interference. See that huge hockey-puck-shaped part? That's a custom-built toroidal transformer that provides clean power to the analog audio circuitry.

With all that extra power, you might be worried about overheating. Don't fret. Oppo's engineers have strategically designed the ventilation system so that the internal components stay cool — without the use of a noisy fan.

Perhaps the best 4K video processor available

The Oppo UDP-205 Oppo uses the same customized quad-core 4K video decoder/processor as the UDP-203. You'll be able to take full advantage of all the 3840 x 2160 pixels offered by 4K Blu-ray, along with the extended color range that makes the best 4K images look so rich and gorgeous. There's also a higher level of fine-tuning and tweaking available than with other 4K players, so you have full control over the picture on your screen.

That special image processor can also make standard Blu-ray discs and DVDs look much better, too. There's even a 4K-ready HDMI input for your Apple® TV, Roku Premiere, or cable/satellite box.

Ready for current and future HDR standards

Ultra HD Blu-ray discs with HDR (High Dynamic Range) offer the best picture available today. HDR allows compatible TVs to display extremely bright and dark black picture content together within the same image. It's incredibly striking.

Now, not all 4K Blu-ray movies offer HDR, but the Oppo UDP-205 is ready for any that do. The player not only supports the required HDR 10 format, but will also support the more sophisticated Dolby Vision™ format. This dynamic system can adjust brightness and color levels on a scene-by-scene basis.

A top-of-the-line music player

Two 8-channel ESS Sabre Pro DACs help ensure your tunes sound their best, whether high-resolution downloads or lesser-quality music files. These DACs are even better than the one used in the UDP-203 — which is certainly no slouch itself when it comes to audio.

For music, you can play CDs or SACDs, connect a hard drive or thumb drive to one of three USB ports, or play tunes from a networked computer or music server. You can even connect your laptop to the asynchronous USB Type-B input to bypass the computer's internal DAC.

Along with the outputs, Oppo included several digital inputs — optical, coaxial, USB type B, and HDMI.

Why we're big Oppo fans

Oppo is not exactly a household name, but the company is well-known among audiophiles and serious music fans. Crutchfield Editor — and local guitar legend — Charlie Pastorfield told me that adding an Oppo Blu-ray player to his home system "really dialed in the stereo imaging.”

"You know the 60's band The Left Banke?" he said, "I've listened to their CD a lot, but when I popped it in the Oppo, the lead singer sounded as if he was standing dead-center in front of me...really focused."

He also noticed new details on recordings he'd heard several times over the years:

“I have this Moby Grape live album,” he said, “and after one of the songs, the entire band lets out this big laugh. I figured it was an inside joke that didn't get picked up on mic. Well, I'm playing the CD on the Oppo, and I can hear the drummer drop his stick on the rim. It makes the faintest of "clanking" sounds. Then — for the first time — I hear him yell out a curse word. I laughed right along with the band.”

The UDP-203 supports both HDR10 and Dolby Vision.

  • HDR 10: HDR 10 is an open standard and currently the most popular HDR format on the market. It supports 10-bit color and 1,000 nits. It uses static metadata at the start of a movie to tell the receiver and your TV that the video content is encoded using HDR.
  • Dolby Vision: Unlike HDR 10 which contains static metadata, Dolby Vision utilizes dynamic metadata which adjusts brightness, color, and contrast automatically for each scene. Dynamic metadata carries information that maps every image to your TV's display capabilities, so you see more of what the content creator intended. Dolby Vision supports 12-bit color and 10,000 nits

3D-Ready: The OPPO UDP-205 lets you enjoy 3D Blu-ray disc movies in full HD 1080p. 3D viewing requires compatible 3D content, 3D-ready HDTV, 3D emitter and glasses, and a high-speed HDMI cable (supporting at least 10.2 Gbps) connection.

Advanced Picture Control: The UDP-205 also features advanced picture controls. Adjustments can be made to brightness, contrast, hue, saturation, sharpness and noise reduction, allowing you to make adjustments to compensate for any limitations found in your other home theater components, or merely to adjust the image to your own personal taste.

Zoom Levels: This feature zooms in and out of the displayed frame and also changes the aspect ratio (image width vs. height). Select from Stretch, Full Screen, 1:1, Compress, or Under Scan.

  • Stretch: The image is vertically stretched 1.33x. For movies with 2.35:1 aspect ratio, this zoom level cuts off the black borders at the top and bottom of the image. Users of a projector with an anamorphic lens may find this mode helpful.
  • Full Screen: The image is stretched by 1.33x for both vertical and horizontal directions. For movies with 2.35:1 aspect ratio, this zoom level cuts off the black borders at the top and bottom of the image while maintaining the correct aspect ratio. The left/right sides of the image are slightly cropped.
  • 1:1: The image fills up the entire 16:9 screen but is horizontally stretched. Figures may look shorter and wider than they should be.
  • Compress: The player maintains the correct 4:3 aspect ratio and adds borders to the left and right sides of the image.
  • Under Scan: The Under Scan zoom level shrinks the image by 5%. This zoom level may be used to compensate for TVs that over scan, so the viewer can see the entire image area with no cropping. All other zoom levels are indicated by their respective zoom ratio

Source Direct Mode: For users who wish to use an external video processor, high-end audio/video receiver or display, the UDP-205 offers a "Source Direct" mode. The original audio/video content on the discs is sent out with no additional processing or alteration. The actual output resolution varies by content -

Content Source Direct Output Resolution
NTSC DVD 480i
PAL DVD 576i
Most Blu-ray Movies (film source) Ultra HD (4K) 23.976Hz or Ultra HD (4K) 24Hz 1080p 23.976Hz or 1080p 24Hz
Most Blu-ray TV shows or Concerts (video-source) 1080i
SACD and DVD-Audio 1080p

Subtitle Shift: For customers using a 2.35:1 "Constant Image Height" video projection system, subtitles may get cut off because they are positioned outside of the active video area. The Subtitle Shift feature can be useful to these customers. The player can shift subtitles up or down so they are displayed within the active video area.

Bonus View: The Bonus View feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

High Quality Construction: The UDP-205 is designed and built with high quality components that are intended for reaching the level of performance in both audio and video. Everything from the semiconductor chips to resistors and capacitors are carefully selected and sourced, so every player coming off the production line can meet and exceed OPPO's high specifications. With its a brushed aluminum front panel, a rigid steel chassis and gold plated connectors, the UDP-205 exemplifies OPPO's attention to quality and details. The solid build quality not only presents a sleek aesthetic, but also ensures dependable operation and reliable connection.

  • Separate Analog & Digital Audio Power Supplies: The UDP-205 has separate power supplies for digital and analog circuitry to eliminate virtually all harmful interference. The analog audio circuitry is powered by a massive toroidal power transformer, which provides a very clean and robust power source to the audio components. A toroidal power transformer offers superior power efficiency and much lower exterior magnetic fields over traditional laminated steel core transformers.
  • Reinforced Chassis Structure: The UDP-205 features a brushed aluminum front panel and a metal chassis that continues the tradition of excellent workmanship found in previous generations of OPPO universal players. Four heavy-gauge machined feet provide a stable foundation for the UDP-205, and isolate it from outside vibration. A new double-layered chassis further enhances the rigidness and vibration-canceling capabilities. The high quality metal construction is designed to impress and to perform.
  • Fanless Passive Cooling: The internal layout and chassis design promote healthy air flow so critical components can be naturally cooled. Strategically placed heatsinks and ventilation grilles allow the UDP-205 run both cool and quiet without the need for internal or external fans. The thermal design has been optimized, analyzed, and stress-tested to ensure reliable operation for years to come.

Asynchronous USB DAC & Coaxial/Optical Inputs: An asynchronous USB DAC input supports sample rates up to 768 kHz PCM and DSD 512. For additional convenience and flexibility, the UDP-205 can convert digital signals from cable and satellite boxes, televisions, video game consoles and other digital transports with coaxial and optical digital outputs to analog. By bypassing the low fidelity, poor quality DAC of traditional computer soundcards, the UDP-205 turns any computer into a high performing multi-media source by utilizing the ES9038PRO DAC.

Optical &  Coaxial Digital Outputs: In addition to HDMI connectivity, the UDP-205 is equipped with coaxial (RCA) and optical (toslink) digital audio outputs to provide backward compatibility with legacy audio components. The optical and coaxial digital inputs support 48k LPCM, 96k LPCM, 192k PCM, and Bitstream (Dolby Digital/DTS).

Notes:
  • Due to bandwidth limitations, high resolution audio formats such as Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution and DTS-HD Master Audio cannot be sent through the coaxial or optical digital audio output. A reduced resolution version of the same audio track will be output instead.
  • Due to copyright restrictions, SACD audio cannot be sent through the coaxial or optical digital audio output. To listen to SACDs, please use the HDMI or analog audio connections.
  • Due to copyright restrictions and bandwidth limitations, full resolution audio from DVD-Audio discs cannot be sent through the coaxial or optical digital audio output. To listen to DVD Audio in full resolution, please use the HDMI or analog audio connections.

Analog Outputs: In addition to HDMI and digital audio outputs, the UDP-205 offers analog audio outputs - including 7.1ch analog outputs, plus balanced & unbalanced dedicated stereo outputs.

  • 7.1Ch Analog Output: To ensure compatibility with older amplifiers, pre-amps, and receivers that do not support HDMI, the UDP-205 retains a 7.1 multichannel analog output section, which delivers an incredible soundstage and an immersive surround experience.
  • Balanced & Unbalanced Dedicated Stereo Output: In addition to the 7.1-channel surround audio output, the UDP-205 has a stereo audio output powered by a dedicated ES9038PRO DAC chip and specially designed buffer and driver stages. The stereo output offers both XLR balanced and RCA single-ended connectors. The balanced output features a true differential signal path all the way from the DAC to the 3-pin XLR connector. By transmitting a pair of differential signals, the balanced output provides better common-mode noise rejection and improves signal quality.

Headphone Amplifier: For a more intimate listening experience, headphones can be connected directly to the UDP-205's built-in headphone amplifier. The headphone amplifier is connected directly to the ESS SABRE PRO DAC and offers a unique performance advantage over standalone headphone amplifiers. Compared to the built-in headphone amplifier in our previous generation BDP-105/105D players, the new design offers more power and higher performance.

Audio Enhancements: The UDP-205 features audio settings such as Pure Audio, A/V Sync, and DRC to improve your listening experience.

  • Pure Audio Mode: You can enjoy higher quality music audio by turning off the video processing and output. The Pure Audio mode reduces any potential interference between the video and audio signals. Because HDMI carries audio together with video, the HDMI video signal cannot be completely turned off. A black screen is transmitted instead to minimize any potential interference.
  • A/V Sync: Allows you to add a slight delay to the audio so it is synchronized to the video. The delay can be adjusted in 10ms steps and within the range of -100ms to +200ms. The delayed time will be applied to all output terminals including HDMI, Coaxial, Optical, and 7.1ch outputs.
  • Dynamic Range Control (DRC): DRC can smooth out the sonic peaks and valleys common with wide-range digital audio. Enabling DRC may make low level audio more audible during low-level listening. The Dynamic Range Compression is applied on the analog audio output; it also works on the digital audio output (HDMI, Coaxial and Optical) when the audio format is set to PCM.

Down Mix Mode: Down mix is the process of converting multi-channel audio to less number of channels. For example, converting a 5.1ch source to stereo, or converting a 7.1ch source to 5.1ch. Down mixing allows the audio output from the player to match the exact number of speakers available in your home theater. The following down mix modes are available.

  • LT/RT: Left Total/Right Total. The center and surround channels are mixed into the two front channels according to the LT/RT matrix. A Dolby Pro Logic receiver will decode the two-channel audio into surround audio.
  • Stereo: This mode down-mixes multi-channel audio to 2-channel stereo output. For original stereo content the output will not change. For original multi-channel content the surround and center channels will be mixed with the left and right front channels. Recommended for use with TV sets or stereo receiver/amplifiers.
  • 5.1Ch: This mode enables 5.1ch decoded audio output. The number of actual output channels depends on the disc. If the source content has more channels, the surround back channels will be mixed into the surround channels.
  • 7.1Ch: This mode enables 7.1ch decoded audio output. The number of actual output channels depends on the disc. For 6.1ch contents, the left and right surround back speakers will both output the same surround back audio channel.

Speaker Configuration: In the Speaker Configuration menu you can configure speaker settings such as speaker distance, speaker size, crossover frequency, and trim level.

  • Test Tone: Test tone is a special group of artificially-created sounds that are used to test your audio speaker system and help to identify any wiring faults.
  • Speaker Size: The speaker size parameter sets bass filtering control for the speakers. The options are:
    • Large: Bass frequencies are passed to the speakers.
    • Small: Bass frequencies are not passed to the speakers to reduce possible distortion. If the subwoofer is available, bass frequencies are redirected to the subwoofer.
    • On (for subwoofer only): Specifies that a subwoofer is available
    • Off: Speaker for the corresponding position does not exist. Audio for the missing speaker is redirected to other speakers or discarded if redirection is not possible.
  • Crossover: When a speaker size is set to "Small", bass information below the selected crossover frequency (40/60/80/90/100/110/120/150/200/250Hz) is not passed to the speaker to reduce possible distortion; and if a subwoofer is available, the bass information will be redirected to the subwoofer.
  • Speaker Distance: The speaker distance parameters set delay control for the corresponding audio channel. The delay is used to compensate for the audio time difference caused by the placement of speakers. The speaker distance can be set from 0 to 60'.
  • Trim Level: The speaker trim level parameters sets the volume of each individual channel. The trim level can be set to +/- 10dB in 0.5dB increments. Channel trim is generally not required since most A/V receivers have the capability to adjust.
Note: Speaker Configuration applies to the multi-channel analog audio outputs only. All digital bitstream and LPCM outputs are unaffected by these settings.

Network Functions

Wired or Wireless Network Connection: Built-in 802.11ac WiFi or Gigabit Ethernet connects the UDP-205 to your home's network, so you can easily play media files stored on computers and home servers. The built-in wireless module is compatible with 802.11 a/b/g/n (2.4GHz/5GHz) and 802.11 ac (5GHz) wireless networks. Only connect the Gigabit Ethernet port of the player to an RJ-45 port that supports 1000BASE-T or 100BASE-TX or 10BASE-T.

Network Content: The UDP-205 can remotely play back music, photo, and video files stored on computers or NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices that are connected to the same home network. The computer or NAS need to run server software that supports media sharing protocols such as DLNA, SMB/CIFS or NFS. The UDP-205 player can play media files on the home network in one of the following three ways -

  • Digital Media Player (DMP): As a digital media player (DMP), the player can actively search, access and pull content from local media servers which supports DLNA.
  • Digital Media Renderer (DMR): As a digital media renderer (DMR), the player plays content received ("pushed") from a digital media controller (DMC). A DMC-capable media server is required.
  • SMB/CIFS/NFC Client: As a SMB/CIFS/NFS client, the player can directly access files shared through SMB/CIFS/NFS servers over the network, as if accessing an external USB hard drive. Most computers, especially those installed with Windows, already support SMB clients.

Compatible Audio/Video/Photo Files: The OPPO UHD Blu-ray disc player supports playback of the following audio/video/photo files over your network via DLNA, SMB/CIFS or NFS.

  • Supported Audio Files: AAC, AIFF, ALAC, DSD64, FLAC, MP3, WAV, and WMA
  • Supported Video Files: AVCHD, AVI, MKV, MPEG, and WMV
  • Supported Photo Files: JPEG
MQA Compatible (requires firmware update): The latest firmware update to the UDP-205 adds MQA decoding to the player's digital audio file playback over the network. MQA enables high-resolution master recordings to be "folded" into a standard-size file that can be easily downloaded or streamed. When navigating through network music files, the player will be able to identify and decode files encoded with MQA. You'll be able to enjoy the full benefit of MQA-encoded music with studio-quality sound.
Note: This firmware update is OPPO's first step in supporting MQA. OPPO is continuing the work on MQA-CD support, as well as adding MQA decoding for the USB DAC and coaxial/optical inputs.

BD-Live: The UDP-205 also supports the BD-Live feature offered on some Blu-ray Disc titles. BD-Live offers extra downloadable content and additional online interactive programs. Content available on BD-Live varies by disc and studio, and may include additional subtitles, commentaries, movie trailers, games, and online cha.

Remote & Convenience Features

High-Resolution On-Screen Menu: The newly updated, high-resolution. on-screen user interface has been designed to be incredibly convenient to navigate, and provides an easy way to manage and access media files from both local and network storage.

Display Dimmer: The UHD Blu-ray player lets you control the display intensity of the front-panel Vacuum Fluorescent Display. You can choose Standard, Dim, or Off.

Parental Control: Parental Control allows you to set a rating limit based on the age of the viewer, preventing your children from viewing inappropriate material. Playback will stop if the ratings exceed the level you set, and it will require you to enter a 4-digit password before the disc will play back.

Energy Saving & Timer Functions:  Video output will be turned off and replaced with a Screen Saver after 3 minutes of inactivity. The player can be set to auto-shutdown after 30 minutes of inactivity. A Sleep Timer allows you to specify the amount of time before the player automatically turns itself off. The Sleep Timer can be set to 30, 45, 60, 90, or 120 minutes; or turned off.

IR Remote: The OPPO UDP-205 comes with an IR remote control for wireless operation of the UHD Blu-ray player. The remote control features a motion sensor to activate the backlight for five seconds when you pick up the remote or press a button on the remote. When using the remote control, the front window of the remote control should be pointed to the infrared sensor on the front panel within an angle of +/-30°and a range of about 26'.

Note: The remote control contains three OPPO remote codes. The default is Code 1. If you have other OPPO products placed close to the UDP-205, they may inadvertently respond to the UDP-205 remote control. To prevent this, you can select a different remote code

Remote Integration: The UDP-205 is easy to integrate into practically any system due to its ability to receive standard IR, RS-232, third party IP Control system, and HDMI CEC commands. The player also has a Trigger In and Out.

  • HDMI CEC: HDMI Consumer Electronics Control (HDMI CEC) simplifies your home theater by allowing a single remote control to operate multiple devices through HDMI connection.
  • RS-232C Port: The UDP-205 has an RS232 control port and can be integrated into most custom home theater control systems
  • Trigger In/Out: The player also supports Trigger In and Out, so it can automatically turn on and off other devices connected to it for the ultimate convenience.

Crutchfield asked
Why did you buy this?

Last chance to get one, Oppo is moving out of production. [ Anthony  Apr 03, 2018 ]
Based on reviews, I previously purchased their Blu-ray player and have loved it. Quite simply, Oppo is obviously passionate about what they do and they make the best players available. [ Tim  Mar 23, 2018 ]
It was (for once) the best I can afford. So I bought it. [ JF  Mar 17, 2018 ]
Great audio. [ CHRISTOPHER  Mar 17, 2018 ]
DAC is superior to my processor. Excellent sound quality. High quality headphone amp. This is my 4th Oppo blue ray player. All have been excellent. [ WILLIAM C  Mar 10, 2018 ]
This is going into a dedicated higher-end stereo system (no video) because of its superior audio quality and the ability to handle a very wide number of formats. [ William  Mar 07, 2018 ]
Reputation and build quality [ Matt  Mar 02, 2018 ]
Audio [ paul  Feb 10, 2018 ]
Brother bought one from you- loves it. Reviews praise how good it is. [ Marshall  Feb 07, 2018 ]
I've read a lot about this player online. It is considered the best or among the best out there at this time (2018). I am more off an audiophile than a videophile so this appealed to me more than the Oppo UDP-203 which was my second choice. This player offers a lot of audio features and can be used as a Roon Endpoint in a Roon Audio network. I'm hoping the durability and flexibility of this unit will keep this in my home AV system for years to come. [ Allan  Feb 03, 2018 ]
Versitale high end audiophile disc player and DAC. Friends who own the 105 highly recommended this unit. Will be center piece of HT system and fit in nicely with 2-channel stereo system as well. [ K  Jan 26, 2018 ]
I need a new audiophile Cd player and a Pre-amp to replace my 20 year old CD player and the tube pre-amp for my high-end stereo system. I saw some great reviews about this product for both audio and video playbacks, although my usage will be mainly for two channel music listening. If it does not satisfy my audio taste then at least I can still use it for my HDTV system. [ Donald  Jan 20, 2018 ]
The Crutchfield people advised me that it will be my best choice for listening to DVDs and CDs through my high end stereo tube type Amplifier system. [ CHARLES  Jan 17, 2018 ]
Stev Kindig's video review. Whether it's a tv, a player or even speaker wire, It's hard not to get excited about something that Steve endorses. [ D  Jan 13, 2018 ]
Choose the OPPO UDP-205 as an upgrade from an OPPO BDP-95. I appreciate OPPO's build quality and excellent value-added capabilities. [ Eric  Jan 09, 2018 ]
I was looking for a higher end single-disc CD player that could also handle ALAC music files from an external HD. The Oppo was mentioned frequently and praised highly on audiophile forums. It also had excellent Crutchfield and Amazon reviews. [ C  Jan 04, 2018 ]
Simply the best. [ JOSEPH  Jan 02, 2018 ]
When my home theater pre/pro failed, I wasn't enthused about repairing an obsolete component that was approaching a decade in age. For the price of an entry level pre/pro, the Oppo will take care of my 5.1 decoding, as well as adding the functionality of 4K disc playback. This made perfect sense! [ F  Jan 01, 2018 ]
previous reviews [ Clyde  Dec 25, 2017 ]
Hands down the best player out there! [ Steven  Dec 04, 2017 ]
High quality equipment; replacing an older Oppo; Chose to order from Crutchfield because their service is awesome! [ Jackie  Nov 28, 2017 ]
High end reputation and review [ James  Nov 27, 2017 ]
Best upgrade path from my Oppo BD-95 to 4k video. [ David  Nov 26, 2017 ]

This my third Oppo DVD player. Excellent video and superb audio. Expensive but well worth the cost. [ Dennis  Oct 03, 2017 ]
I currently have a BDP-105 that is an excellent piece and am ready for UHD. [ Joseph  Oct 03, 2017 ]
Great reviews on the product [ Miles  Sep 24, 2017 ]
Excellent reviews. I like the all in one deck; cd player, dvd player and Hi Res player as well as internet radio. All the great high-end features that this player has was to hard to pass up, since I am certain this will be my last upgrade, I'm up in years now [ Strat  Sep 21, 2017 ]
Oppo brand! Enough said! If I have to explain then you have no business buy it. [ RODOLFO E  Sep 21, 2017 ]

Replace 105 model [ M  Jul 21, 2017 ]
Great reviews, I am looking for best in class audio and I believe this will give it to me. [ Peter  Jul 20, 2017 ]
I'm upgrading from the Oppo BDP-105, as I've just bought a 4K TV. I frequently use headphones, making the headphone amplifier built into that model, and this one, particularly attractive. Also, as a classical music fan, having the option to use the analog outputs is very useful. I've used Oppo products for some time and have found them to be very solidly built and to offer very high video quality. [ John  Jul 14, 2017 ]
I will soon purchase the LG 65"oled e7p or the w7p from you....still researching... stay tuned. Bob C. [ ROBERT  Jul 14, 2017 ]

Well known brand name & I bought it before [ Cameron  Jul 07, 2017 ]
I wanted the very best DVD player with the best picture & sound. [ MAXIME  Jul 02, 2017 ]
I already have an Oppo BDP105D, which I have had for a few years, and so I know how good Oppo blu-ray players are. I needed to replace a Sony BDP-S2000ES, which I purchased in 2010. Since the BDP105D has now been replaced by this model, I purchased it as a replacement for the Sony. [ Roger N.  Jul 02, 2017 ]
I enjoy music and after reading the information on the oppo web site and various reviews it seemed to be the udp that would be the replacement for the pioneer elite a47.I also purchased a 4k ultra hd television so this oppo udp fits quite nicely. [ robert  Jun 28, 2017 ]
I trust the company :I have good experience so far with my orders [ ORLANDO  Jun 22, 2017 ]
I'm trying to improve upon a low quality blu ray player and to replace an aging audiophile cd player with a single unit. The networking features and DAC functionality will give me flexibility in the future too. [ Brian  Jun 22, 2017 ]

I have owned three Oppo players thru the years and they are the best quality and value out there! The last one I am passing on to my son so I can upgrade! Can't wait! [ David  Jun 14, 2017 ]
reviews [ J. KEITH  Jun 09, 2017 ]
My primary reason for buying this were for the SACD/DSD and audio DACs. [ Chris  Jun 05, 2017 ]
I've been waiting to pull the lever on an Oppo for years now. I love Crutchfield, so where better to buy it from! I can hardly wait! Why Oppo UDP-205? Specs, reputation, and price. [ john  Jun 01, 2017 ]
We already own the Oppo 103-D (Darbee edition), which we love; but we are ready to upgrade. We are soon to be in the mkt for a 4K TV and we also own hundreds of CDs, which we believe could be made to sound considerably improved by use of this product. We will let you know!! [ Jill  May 31, 2017 ]

When making a digital connection to your receiver, you would not notice a difference in sound quality as you would be using your receiver's built-in DACs for the conversion. [ Ryan  Jan 18, 2018 ]  Staff
Sorry my send button prematurely launched. To continue-you would HOPE your extra $3000 nets you audible improvement but that's not always the case and at these rarefied prices there begins to be diminishing returns. The Oppo has gotten glowing reviews-it's upgraded my entire cd/bluray library and it's just barely in my price comfort range. I prefer to spend my money now upgrading the other links in my audio chain. I think it's going to satsify my hifi craving until it wears out & would highly recommend it, [ David  Dec 27, 2017 ]
Hello Ken: I recent faced the delimma of purchasing the 205 vs the 203! My desire to provide the best audio possible made it the 205. It is not always specifications but what it sounds like to the listener! To get the most out of the 205 you should have a complete balanced system but at present I purchased the Emotiva XSP-1 Differential Reference Pre-Amp to feed my Denon AVR-4311ci. A acquaintance who has a $40,000 system loaned me a high quality CD and the fullness of the sound stage and specific acoustic reproduction of the instrument was quite noticeable even my wife who really does not appreciate the listening experience was blown away by the difference! I rely on the expert reviewers to expand upon what I am hearing, I refer to an article by Gary Galo, reviewing the OPPO 205 in Audioxpress; it best discribes the flexibility of the system to achieve best in class results! I am quite satisfied in my decision in my purchase and look forward to the hours of enjoyment listening to digitized sounds converted faithfully back to their original Analog existence! Randy [ Randall  Dec 27, 2017 ]
The Oppo UDP 205 is outstanding, I decided to add a pre amp due to my amps lack of power (Anthem A5) I would like a little more control and power. I love the sound quality going directly to the amp... I regret not purchasing an Anthem P5 which is 350 watts you can't beat the new DACs [ Rodney  Dec 27, 2017 ]
Your question is a good one. I'm also an electronics engineer so I feel more qualified to provide a realistic answer: What separates a good DAC from better DAC and an outstanding DAC (or pre-amplifier) is usually the resultant distortion levels in the analog output. A $4K to $10K high-end preamp will hopefully have been optimized for both a low noise floor and the lowest distortion possible. However, there is a point in the design of a DAC or preamp where you can measure improvements using specialized test equipment, but from an actual listening standpoint there is no discernible difference. The DAC section of the 205 only accepts inputs from coax or USB. It outputs to the stereo channels and on the 205 that's the dedicated stereo left/right channels and not the left front and left right of the 7.1 analog outputs. In terms of distortion the 205 claims a Signal-to-Noise Ratio: > 120dBr and THD+N: < 0.00031%. Now distortion of such low magnatude is simply theoretical and cannot be heard, though you might hear distortion from some other source playing through the OPPO 205. However, so much of what one thinks one hears can be difficult to pin down. But more often than not, the speakers (or headphones) will be the determining factor with distortion more than any other piece of gear in the audio chain. But in terms of specs, the OPPO 205 is up there with preamps in the $10k range in terms of noise floor and distortion. Personally, I view it as a transparent device and would not be concerned. But if you have deep enough pockets and want to experiment, you're free to do so. [ Peter  Dec 27, 2017 ]
The short answer is yes. From everything I've read so far, the 205 is able to decode and pass on Dolby Atmos encoded discs as well as other "object based" formats. [ Robert  Dec 11, 2017 ]
The Oppo UDP-205 won't decode Dolby Atmos or DTS:X in the player itself (nor will any other Blu-ray players currently available), but it will pass Dolby Atmos and DTS:X bitstreams out via HDMI to compatible A/V Receivers for 11.x decoding. So, provided your Anthem AVR supports Dolby Atmos and DTS:X with 11.2 output, you won't have any issues with the Oppo UDP-205. [ Nathaniel  Dec 11, 2017 ]
Oppo will be glad to answer this, I am not qualified..... [ SKEETER  Dec 11, 2017 ]
I play music and videos from flash drives as well as from an external 2TB hard drive via the USB 2.0 or 3.0 ports. The UDP-205 will play mp3, wma, m4a (iTunes), OOG, AIFF, WAV, ALAC, APE and FLAC. USB drives can be formatted with FAT, FAT32, exFAT, or NTFS. [ MICHAEL G.  Dec 06, 2017 ]
I've tried this method with a USB 3.0 drive. It works ok. But I can't give it a glowing review because it's frozen on me a few times. [ Chris  Dec 06, 2017 ]
Yes, it can play back audio file via USB or LAN. [ Jean  Dec 06, 2017 ]
Yes you can. While using HDMI cable to connect to your TV, just turn down tv's volume to zero. Audio signal can be run through OPPO 205's analog output port to your amplifier or receiver as you wish. Some Blu-Ray movies have only 7.1 channel audio output, make sure in setup menu under audio processing / stereo signal, select down-mixed stereo. Enjoy. [ EDMOND  Nov 10, 2017 ]
I remember reading on another Forum that this was not possible. But the best advice for you would be to call Oppo Customer Service and pose that question. They are the experts and the last time I had an issue, I was able to immediately talk to a live person. Or call Crutchfield tech support as they may also know. [ Robert  Nov 09, 2017 ]
Yes but you would have to turn the TV speaker volume all the way down. You would also want to choose the stereo downmix rather than a surround mode to get the proper audio mix. [ Gary  Nov 08, 2017 ]
The 205 has 7.1 analog output jacks. [ Siegfried  Nov 08, 2017 ]
Yes, but you would be reduced from multi-channel surround sound to 2-channel (Left and Right). You may also experience Lip Synch issues if your analog amp is processing the signal in any way. [ tom  Nov 08, 2017 ]
I'm not sure if you can specifically prevent the audio signal from going thru the HDMI (I've never tried), but I just turn the volume all the way down on the TV and listen to the audio output via the RCA connection. Works fine. [ MARK A  Nov 08, 2017 ]
Yes you can. Just connnect RCA cables to the stereo audio output jacks to your amp. Then set the "Audio Out Setup" (pg 59 of manual) "HDMI Audio Format" to Off. After that, set "Audio Processing Setup"(pg 67 of manual) #11 "Stereo Signal" to Downmix Stereo (DEFAULT) if you are only using 2 speakers - unless you are using the 5.1 audio out to your receiver (the way I am using, to take advantage of UDP-205 DACs), then set to Front Left/Right. That's it. Hope this helps. [ Morris  Nov 08, 2017 ]
Hey Nickolai, You certainly can! That's one of the greatest benefits of this player. The menus are very easy to use and are simply intuitive. From the Oppo system menus you can specify analog output of the Blu-ray audio track while still outputting the full signal over HDMI. You will need to disable the audio output on the TV as the digital audio signal won't be disabled over HDMI. (Disabling the audio on the TV will prevent output for your TV's internal speakers) You can use the full 7.1 analog output or down-mix to 5.1 or 3.1 too. You can also down-mix the audio on the Oppo player to 2 channel stereo and use the dedicated ESS circuit and balanced XLR (or unbalanced RCA) outputs as well. All of these options are available while keeping the Video (and audio) streams active over HDMI output. I am currently using my player to down-mix to stereo and sending output via the dedicated RCA outputs to a yamaha 2 channel integrated amplifier. I highly recommend this player!! [ Antonio  Nov 08, 2017 ]
gloriousBeing so subjective and dependent on your tastes and other equipment, this is an impossible question to answer. But, I'm currently running it in a pure stereo system. I've fed it to Plinius SA-100s (switchable class AB or pure Class A) and am currently using it with Bel Canto Reference 600s. And either way, the Oppo is up to the amp. Plinius are huge, heavy and eat power in Class A and they sound glorious. Bel Canto are small and sound even more glorious. BEl Canto are monoblocks, so if you need 5 you can buy 5.Plinius are stereo pairs that can be run as monoblocks at twice the power. I don't run a 5.1 system, so I don't know anything about amps designed for 5.1. Hope this was of any help. [ GERRY  Nov 06, 2017 ]
I am using a 300B based tube amp for stereo and a Coda amp for the other 3 ch. all 5 ch. are large full range speakers, no SW. [ Jean  Nov 06, 2017 ]
For either one, you can't go wrong with an Outlaw 5000. Easily one of the best bang for your buck amps and it even matches! [ Joshua  Nov 06, 2017 ]
yes [ James  Oct 19, 2017 ]
It will functionally work as HDMI is backwards compatible but anything that relies on newer HDMI specifications (like DTS-HD Master Audio) will not transmit because it's not part of the HDMI 1.1 standard. Since raw uncompressed audio still works with 1.1, you should be fine from an audio perspective if happy with the sound from your 1.1 receiver. [ Gianni  Oct 19, 2017 ]
this is from the Oppo people: The analog outputs are 2.1Vrms. [ LAWRENCE K  Aug 31, 2017 ]
I'm not sure. I don't see it posted. Oppo BDP-105, which I also own, measures 2.3v rms on RCA with output impedance of 100 ohms. [ ROY  Aug 31, 2017 ]
Output Level: (RCA) 2.1±0.2Vrms. (XLR) 4.2±0.4Vrms [ Gerard  Aug 30, 2017 ]

i can not help you, but i will tell you this: I have the oppo connected to a dennon high end sur sound amp and i change the music quality of sound using the dennon, to where i am comfortable with the sound quality this is a fantastic player and i am very happy with it [ JOHN  Jul 14, 2017 ]
No, ,not at all [ James  Jul 04, 2017 ]
No, not if you own an up-to-date AVR (audio receiver), which has 4K pass-through. The only advantage I could imagine would be if you are using a much older AVR, (~2012, or earlier), which is not capable of 4K pass-through. [ Jill  Jul 04, 2017 ]
Slight picture improvement in home theater. Sound run through A-V processor so no appreciable change. Oppo used only in home theater so answer may be of little help. [ Dr. Ronald  Jun 30, 2017 ]
To me it sounds better over the older Oppo blu ray players I have used . I have not tried the Oppo 203, but reading from the Oppo site their is a advantage in sound from Hdmi with the 205.. I also use Xlr's with the 205.. [ Alex  Jun 30, 2017 ]
I would say no [ Doug  Jun 30, 2017 ]
not a major difference - but the UDP - 205 is a superior unit sonically [ Philip  Jun 30, 2017 ]
If you ever would be using a very high quality headphone in the future. I can't believe how my CD collection has become such a source of pleasure thru my Focal Elears and the 205 DAC. [ STUART  Jun 30, 2017 ]
Likely no advantage. I haven't owned or heard the 203. I'm running out of 7.1 analog outs (after the dacs), and it sounds mighty fine. but if that's not your scheme I would think they would be the same out of HDMI [ john  Jun 30, 2017 ]
I have not done any in-house testing on this model, but I don't see any reason that the player would not work on its HDMI 1 input. The HDMI 2 input is not 4K compatible and that one would be a bit problematic if you used it for 4K video. I also looked through all the feedback on it and didn't see any mention of potential issues when using these products together. I expect them to work well together.
