About the Ring Video Doorbell 2

Emily S.

See who's at the door, whether you're there or not

I have two dogs who get pretty excited (and a foster dog who gets scared) when people knock on my door. That means I find myself constantly peeking out the window if I'm expecting guests or food delivery so that I can head them off at the pass. With Ring Video Doorbell 2, I'd no longer have to worry about my dogs losing their minds if my timing is a little off — it senses motion and sends a mobile alert before visitors even have a chance to reach the door.

What's even more amazing is that you can keep an eye on things when you're not there. Use the mobile app to chat with people when they ring the bell, and they won't know you aren't at home unless you want them to. Get notified when an expected package gets delivered (or if someone tries to un-deliver it).

Hardwired or battery-powered — your choice

If your current doorbell operates at a voltage between 8 and 24 volts AC, you can connect Ring Video Doorbell 2 to the existing wiring. Hardwiring this way keeps Ring's battery charged and allows it to trigger your existing chime when someone rings the bell.

Does your current doorbell play a synth melody? If so you'll probably need to install the included diode. Just check the manual for instructions on wiring to a "digital doorbell."

No doorbell at all? No problem. The included battery is easily removable and only needs to be charged every 6 – 12 months, depending on usage. If you don't want to lose coverage while your depleted battery is recharging, pick up an extra battery. Without an existing doorbell, you'll also need to keep your phone handy for notifications, or purchase Ring Chime or Chime Pro for alerts while you're at home.

Optional cloud storage

The camera streams live footage to the app 24/7, but if you want to save or send video clips, you'll need a Ring Protect plan. Ring Protect is a subscription-based cloud storage service. The basic package ($4.99/month or $49.99/year) covers a single camera and allows you to save and share your Ring videos from that camera. You get a free, 30-day trial subscription when you activate your Ring device.

Installing multiple Ring devices? The Ring Protect Plus plan ($10/month or $100/year) includes cloud storage for unlimited Ring devices at a single location.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Ring Video Doorbell 2 instantly alerts you (on your smartphone, tablet, or computer) when someone approaches your front door or rings your doorbell, and lets you see and hear who it is before you answer. The Video Doorbell 2 has a built-in camera that streams HD video via Wi-Fi, and two-way audio to let you speak with your visitor. The Ring video doorbell replaces your existing doorbell, and can be hardwired or powered by the included rechargeable battery.

Camera: The Video Doorbell 2 has a wide-angle lens with a 160° field of view. The camera produces bright 1080p HD video in a Live View that you can watch on your phone, tablet, or computer. Adjustable motion sensors let you customize the size and sensitivity of the motion detection zones. When motion is detected, a notification will be sent to your smart device or computer through the Ring app, allowing you to view the live video stream. Built-in infrared LEDs enable night vision after the sun goes down.

Weather Resistant: The Video Doorbell 2 is resistant to inclement weather and temperature extremes (-5°F to 120°F).

Installation: The Ring Video Doorbell 2 is designed to replace an existing doorbell, and is compatible with most mechanical or digital doorbell chimes with 8-24 volts AC transformers. Even if you don't have an existing doorbell, you can install the Video Doorbell 2 and power it for approximately 6 months per charge with the included rechargeable battery. Wedge and Corner installation kits are included to help properly aim the camera for best performance. If you're replacing an older Ring Video Doorbell, an adapter plate is included to prevent you from drilling new holes. Two faceplates come with the Video Doorbell 2 -- Satin Nickel and Venetian -- so you can customize the look.

Wi-Fi: The Ring Video Doorbell 2 operates on an 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi connection on the 2.4 GHz band. It requires a minimum upload speed of 1 Mbps, however, 2 Mbps is recommended for best streaming performance.

Ring App: The free Ring - Almost Home app pulls together all of your Ring devices, including Video Doorbells and Security Cameras. You can have multiple users on your Ring account, each with the ability to view video from any of the video devices. The app sends you an instant alert when someone triggers a motion sensor, or rings your Ring Video Doorbell. You'll be able to see, hear, and speak to anyone on your property using your smart device. In addition, the app lets you create a virtual Neighborhood Watch and receive alerts from your neighbors. In the app, you can zoom and pan for a better look, flash the lights, activate the siren, customize the Motion Zones, times for receiving (or not receiving) alerts, and how often to be notified for motion events. The Ring App is available for Apple iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch running iOS 9.1 or later, and for Android devices running version 4.4 and up. The app also works with Windows 10 and Mac OS.

Ring Protect: The Ring app includes a free 30-day trial of Ring Video Recording, which lets you save, review, and share recordings from the app. Ring Protect plans are currently* $3.00 per month / $30.00 per year for basic coverage (per camera), or $10.00 per month / $100.00 per year for Protect Plus (unlimited cameras).

When you hardwire the Ring that charges the battery.

Q
Can I install "hardwired" and leave the battery in? Would this cause problems? Thinking of it as a battery backup during power outage.
captainelectron  Feb 02, 2020

A
The hardwiring keeps the battery charged, in other words it will not work without the battery.
george  Feb 02, 2020
Q
How much voltage does each camera draw? can I hook up two cameras to one Transformer?

Hi Jason, thank you for your question. The Ring Doorbell 2 does not require a hardwired connection to your transformer since it does have a rechargeable battery, with about a 6 month life per charge. Hardwiring a single Ring Video Doorbell 2, you will need to be sure you are able to supply the Ring with a voltage between 16V-24V and at least 30VA of amperage. A representative with Ring will be able to give you further electrical specs, and should be able to offer further info on hardwiring multiple devices. You can reach them at 800-696-1918.

If the installed battery is fully charged, the existing doorbell voltage only maintained it. You can install 2 + ring doorbell to any house.

The battery has an LED light to indicate charge state plus you can check battery level with smartphone app.

When it's charging, you'll have an orange and green LED lit up on the battery. When fully charged, there will only be a green LED. The first charge for mine took a few hours to completely charge.

Sorry I can't help. The Doorbell 2 was to big for the place I wanted to mount it. I traded it for a Doorbell Pro which is smaller and not battery powered. Kent

Both lights on the battery turns green I believe. Also, once you install the battery into the Ring and get it set up, you can check the App on your phone..

Hello, I recently purchased one and i installed it Hard wire, I think is better you don't have to re charge the battery. The installation was easy, very happy with the product. Thank You Ray

The battery model is easy to install. We bought a second battery to ensure zero down time when the first battery is recharging.
ben  Nov 07, 2018

If you already have an existing wired doorbell then obviously the hardwired is the way to go. If no wiring exists the the battery installation is the best way to go. Hope this helps.
