Product Research

Features

Dual 4Ω Voice Coils: This woofer features dual 4Ω voice coils, for wiring flexibility. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 2Ω load. When wired in series, the woofer presents an 8Ω load.

Marine Certification: Polk DB+ series speakers are marine certified (IP56 rated), making them a good choice for boats in fresh water, convertibles, motorcycles, ATVs, and other applications where the speaker might get wet. Because they have coated steel baskets and the terminals are not covered, we do not recommend using them in salt water environments.

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Sealed Box Volume: Polk recommends a sealed enclosure between 0.5 ft³ and 1.2 ft³.

Ported Box Volume: Polk recommends a ported enclosure between 0.66 ft³ and 1.2 ft³.

Q
How much volume or airspace does this take up when mounted?
henry  Oct 07, 2023
1 answer
A
This spec is not listed by Polk, Henry. If you are building a custom box for your Polk DB 842 DVC's and shooting for an exact airspace size, you can still have great results as the DB works in a sealed box from 0.5-1.2 cubic feet or a ported box from 0.66-1.2 cubic feet so it can sound amazing in a wide variety of box configurations!

Q
Would this fit in the factory sub enclosure in a 2007 tacoma? I have an aftermarket HU and a 5 channel aftermarket amp. Aftermarket speakers as well.
emmanuel  Aug 21, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Emmanuel, and thank you for your question. The Polk Audio DB 8 inch subwoofer is 6/10ths of an inch too deep for the factory enclosure. We have a few shallow sub options that can fit. If you use our vehicle fit guide with your truck, you can find them there, or call an advisor at 800-324-9695 for assistance.

Unfortunately, this subwoofer would be roughly 1/2" too deep to fit into the factory subwoofer location. For help with selecting a compatible option, please reach out to our advisors via online chat or phone at 1-800-324-9695.

Q
Will this handle 200 continues watts?
robert  Mar 23, 2021

A
Polk's specifications indicate Continuous Power Handling of 125W RMS per coil.

Q
Can this be installed using 4 ohms only? One coil?
larry  Feb 15, 2021
2 answers
A
Online wisdom says that is a bad idea, and I would agree since that's not how Polk intended this sub to operate. The technical reasons involve magnetic fields and electrical parameters and other important engineered details. Look into the different ways to run this sub @ 2 and 8 ohms, but probably best to shop another sub, one with 2ohm DVCs could be wired to a 4 ohm load.
william  Mar 23, 2021
A
That is not advisable. You should just get this version: https://www.crutchfield.com/p_107DB842S/Polk-Audio-DB-842-SVC.html?tp=111

Newbie here. Can I wire this right to the factory stereo of my 2016 Colorado or do I need an additional amp?

Not sure on your vehicle, mine is mounted in my Explorer using the factory amp and it works great. My Explorer has the factory JBL system with sub.

You need to add an amp.

If you are looking for any kind of volume at all, you will need an amp, Without one I do not think you'll hear anything at all,

I used this to replace the factory rear sub in a 2001 Yukon that already has a factory amp to the rear sub. I had to slightly modify the factory speaker box for it to fit. Nevertheless, I connected it to the factory wiring and it works great. Research your vehicles stereo wiring. There may already be a factory amp in the system. If not, They make an Amplifier sub interface wire harness inline converter that plugs into the factory harness allowing you to add an amp or a sub.

HI, I want to replace the 8â?? subwoofer in my 2018 Honda Civic Si. This looks like a good potential fit. Would you recommend this in my car? If not, do you have another you would recommend and if so, why? Thank you!

I tried to mount in my rear deck in the factory sub location. I was getting too much travel from the cone hitting the deck cover. I tried a couple ways to improvise but no luck. Good performer for sure but not right for me unless I cut the deck cover open. Decided to run a pair of 6"Bozooka tubes.Nice bass without excessive thump de thump...

I would definitely recommend. I replaced the factory sub in my Yahoo no amp and it sounded good so I'm sure it will sound great in your civic

Q
Can this be mounted free air? I want to mount it in to expiation wall on my pontoon. It would actually be in a fiberglass enclosure that isn't sealed and is way too large for a speaker housing.

A
You're always better off calling and asking them. When you tell them what you want to do, they might have a better match for your application. But for what it's worth, the sub in my Lexus is free air and it works and sounds great in there.

Can this be installed in a door and used as a mid bass driver?
alexo  May 08, 2019

A
It is not intended for that, and will not reproduce the frequencies that a mid bass driver will. This is a subwoofer and is intended to produce bass frequencies.

Will this fit in the existing 8" sub enclosure in the door of a 2012 Mustang Coup? Especially curious about depth.

I installed this in 2001 Yukon XL, with a rear speaker box. I am not sure if it will fit you application. The speaker is 4 1/2" deep as the magnet has a slight "hump" on back. Good luck.
thomas  Apr 10, 2018
A
The depth is 3-3/4". Keep in mind this is top mounted depth. If you have the room on the top side for the rim then you should have no problem installing this in your enclosure. If your mounting this inside the enclosure, I think you may have an issue if the depth of the enclosure is shallower than 4 inches.

Will the factory amp in my 2006 Lexus ES330 non Mark Harmon premium sound push this sub in the rear deck?

How many watts is the amp? Are you going to use it to power the existing speakers too? If the answer is yes. Then I would save up my lunch money for another couple weeks and invest in a mono amp dedicated to pushing the sub. I bought an open box DS 18 candy amp from _mazon for ninety bucks and am so glad I did. I know there are bigger and better amps out there, but for pushing 1, 8" sub well worth the extra ninety and extra time on the install. I didn't even bridge the amp so I'm 4 ohms and 300 watts and can double that if iI bridge to 2 ohms. Plus the amp is a third of the size of most amps. But the fact I've got it in the rear of my work van (Nissan NV200) and the thing just pumps with 2 polk 6x9 2 ways, a set of 5" JBL 2-ways up front and a pioneer 45 watt x4 mini amp . Stick with the Polk sub though, it's a really great value considering its pedigree! Good luck!
john  Feb 13, 2018
A
It all depends on the output of your current amp these subs at normal operation need 250 watts if yoir current amp doesnt have at least a 500 watts your not going to get the best performance from this Sub
gerardo jaime  Feb 10, 2018
A
In order for your factory amp to power the sub, you will need to purchase a two ohm subwoofer. I found out the hard way after thinking factory JBL amp would power subwoofer.

Q
Is this subwoofer suitable for a free air application or do I need an enclosure for it?
greg  Aug 10, 2017

A
I framed in an open section in the back of my work van (nissan NV 200) skipped that over priced dyna mat and used neoprene that was a wetsuit at one time along with some 3-M adhesive and a lot of caulk. I also installed 2, 3" passive radiators on either side of the sub because it was a pretty big space and closed it all up with heavy foam insulation and a 3/4" piece of plywood.

This is a new model and we just have the preliminary information provided by Polk at the moment. They do provide airspace recommendations for both sealed (0.5-1.2 cu. ft) and ported (0.66-1.2 cu. ft) enclosures. While they make no mention of "free Air" installations, they do state on their website that the subwoofer "Fits in any enclosure or application." I hope that helps.
