Our take on the Sony XM-DS1300P5 by Crutchfield's Tim Sprinkle
More is better in the competitive world of car audio amplification. That's why Sony's P5 series amps are designed to give you more of what you want power, volume, and versatility without slamming your wallet. And, these five-sided amplifiers definitely have an edge when it comes to style.
The XM-DS1300P5 uses an efficient Class D design to deliver up to 400 watts (at 2 ohms) from a compact package! The built-in low-pass crossover is continuously variable from 50 to 300 Hz, letting you coax thunderous bass from just about any subwoofer, and the subsonic filter keeps your sound tight. Plus, you can dial in up to 10 dB of bass boost to turn that thunderstorm into an all-out hurricane!
Sturdy, gold-plated terminals give you reliable signal and power connections, and speaker-level inputs let you easily integrate the XM-DS1300P5 with any system, even a factory radio.

Sony XM-DS1300P5 Reviews

Class D P5 Amplifiers: The XM-DS1300P5 amplifier is a 5-sided Class D mono block amp, designed to complement the Sony P5 subwoofer line. Class D technology is a method to convert and amplify music signals with MOSFETs to high-speed pulse signals. Class D amps feature high efficiency and low heat generation.
Protection Circuitry: This amplifier has 3-way protection circuitry which protects the amplifier in the following cases:
- Thermal: shuts off the amp when the operating temperature is too high
- Short circuit: shuts off the amp when the speaker outputs are short-circuited
- DC Offset: shuts off the amp when the speaker wires or ground lead is not securely connected, generating direct current
Power/Protector LED: The amplifier has an LED on the top panel which glows green when operating normally, and changes to red when the protection circuit is activated.
Low-pass Filter: The XM-DS1300P5 is equipped with a low-pass filter, continuously variable from 50-300Hz, with a slope of 12dB/octave. It is constantly activated and cannot be switched off.
Subsonic Filter: This amp is equipped with a 15Hz subsonic filter with a slope of 12dB/octave. When switched on, it filters out extremely low frequencies that steal amplifier power and cause speaker damage.
Protection Cap: The XM-DS1300P5 comes with a plastic protection cap that fits over the wire terminal strip to help prevent accidental short circuiting.
Speaker Outputs: Although this is a mono amplifier, there are screw terminals for two speakers (each terminal is 0.35" wide). They are not stereo outputs, but summed (L+R) mono, and internally wired in parallel. If you connect two 4-ohm speakers to the amp, the amplifier will "see" a 2-ohm load.
Power/Ground Terminals: The power and ground screw terminals are 0.54" wide to easily accommodate 4-gauge wire.
Speaker-level Input Harness: The amp comes with a speaker-level input harness with a 4-pin Molex plug on one end. This allows you to more easily connect this amplifier to a factory radio or a receiver without preamp outputs.
Preamp Output: This amplifier includes a stereo preamp output, which allows you to send an unfiltered signal to another amplifier.
RMS Power Output (supply voltage at 14.4 Volts):
- 200 watts x 1 into 4 ohms (20Hz to 300Hz, 0.2% THD)
- 400 watts x 1 into 2 ohms (20Hz to 300Hz, 0.6% THD)
Maximum Power Output:
- 400 watts x 1 into 4 ohms
- 800 watts x 1 into 2 ohms
Current Drain: at rated output: 50A (at 2 ohms)
Amplifier Wiring: This amplifier uses two 30-amp fuses, so its total fuse rating is 60 amps, however Sony recommends using an 80-amp fuse at the battery. The Streetwires 4-gauge amp wiring kits (items 211PS4B, 211PS4R, 211PS4BI, 211PS4RI and 211AK4) include an 80-amp fuse, which will accommodate the amp's fuse rating. Other 4-gauge amp wiring kits carried by Crutchfield include a 60-amp fuse. If you want to use a 4-gauge wiring kit that comes with a fuse rated at less than 80 amps, the fuse should be replaced with an 80-amp AGU fuse (item 211AGU80).
