About the PetSafe YardMax® In-Ground Fence
An invisible barrier to keep your dog from roaming
Keep your pet safe and at home with the YardMax In-Ground Fence.
An invisible barrier to keep your dog from roaming
Building a physical fence to keep your dog contained can be expensive and, in some locations, impractical. The PetSafe YardMax In-Ground Fence lets you enjoy all of your property, and it keeps dogs from getting lost or wandering into traffic.
Just bury the included wire — laid out in whatever configuration you desire — to establish a perimeter for your pooch. Attach the included wireless device to your dog's collar, and he'll get a warning beep, followed by progressively increasing levels of static correction, any time he approaches the invisible boundary. The included flags give him a helpful visual cue as he learns where he can and can't go.
Keep your pups safe and sound
The YardMax comes with one receiver collar, but you can add as many as you need — each one will respond to the wire barrier the same way. When your pet nears the boundary, the collar will give a warning beep, followed by a static correction to remind your pet to stay inside the safe zone.
If she continues past the wire, she'll receive progressively stronger corrections from the collar until returning inside the perimeter, or until the safety time-out activates after 15 seconds. Before long, she'll know exactly where the no-go zone is, and she won't test it.
Part of a whole-home containment system
The collar receiver works with other PetSafe containment systems. Place a rock-shaped Outdoor Pet Barrier near the garbage cans or flower beds to establish additional no-go zones inside the perimeter. A Threshold Barrier can make specific rooms inside the house off-limits.

Features
Overview: The PetSafe YardMax In-Ground Fence (PIG00-11115) keeps your dog safely with a boundary that you set. The system includes the transmitter, a rechargeable receiver collar, 500' of 20-gauge boundary wire (enough to cover between 1/3 and 1/2 acre), 50 boundary marking flags, surge protector, and installation accessories. With additional wire (not included), the system is expandable up to 10 acres.
System Design: The buried wire creates a boundary for your dog. Your dog's receiver collar detects the radio signal traveling through the wire, emitting a tone and vibrating as it nears the boundary. If he continues to approach the boundary, the collar will deliver a safe Static Correction, which will persuade him to stay within the containment area. The type and intensity of the correction is adjustable. The YardMax In-Ground Fence is effective for pets 5 pounds and up.
Pawz Away Compatible: You can customize your pet's boundaries by creating additional barriers with PetSafe Pawz Away products. These barriers can keep your dog away from flower beds, decks and stairs, trash cans, and other small areas. Pawz Away barriers are wireless, and work with the YardMax receiver collar. Compatible Pawz Away products include:
- Indoor Pet Barrier: ZND-1000, ZND-1200
- Outdoor Pet Barrier: RFA-378, PWF00-11923
- Mini Pet Barrier: PWF00-14040, PWF00-13665
- Threshold Pet Barrier: PFW00-14406, RFA-514
Installation: Burying the boundary wire is most effective way of installing the In-Ground Fence system. The wire should be buried approximately 1-3 inches deep. You can also attach the boundary wire to an existing fence. The fence transmitter should be installed in a dry, well ventilated, protected area. The boundary wire should also be connected to the included surge protector. The boundary flags should be placed short of the boundary wire, and approximately 10' apart, to create a visual warning zone for your pet. The kit comes with a 500' spool of direct burial boundary wire, enough for approximately 1/3 acre. Additional 500' spools are available for purchase, if needed. You can also use heavier gauge wire between 14 and 20 gauge, if desired. Here is the amount of wire required based on the size of the area:
Area Size | Length of Wire |
---|---|
1/4 acre | 415 feet |
1/3 acre | 480 feet |
1/2 acre | 590 feet |
1 acre | 835 feet |
2 acres | 1180 feet |
5 acres | 1870 feet |
10 acres | 2800 feet |
System Modes: The YardMax system has 2 modes: YardMax and Traditional. You can choose the mode via the Mode Selection Switch on the side of the transmitter. In YardMax mode, the Warning Zone begins at the boundary wire to give you up to approximately 30% more usable yard space. The Traditional Mode Warning Zone begins before the boundary wire. You can determine the width of the Warning Zone in either mode by adjusting the dial on the transmitter between 1 and 10. The Correction Area in YardMax mode extends well beyond the Warning Area, creating the impression of an endless boundary. The Traditional Mode Warning Area is only as wide as set by the Boundary Width dial.
Receiver Collar: The Receiver Collar comes with two short contact points that touch the neck of your dog. Longer contact points (supplied) may be needed for dogs with long or thick fur. The waterproof collar fits dogs with neck sizes from 6 to 28 inches, and can be trimmed to fit. The receiver is powered by a built-in rechargeable battery. The battery charges in approximately 2-3 hours, and each charge can last up to 3 months. The receiver collar will emit a Warning Tone when your pet enters the Warning Zone. If he continues into the Correction Zone, the collar will deliver a Static Correction (if set to Level 2 or higher). The Receiver Collar's response levels include:
Static Correction Level | Receiver Collar Function | Temperament of Pet |
---|---|---|
1 | No Static Correction; Tone only | Initial Training Mode |
2 | Low Static Correction | Timid |
3 | Medium Low Static Correction | Timid or Average |
4 | Medium Static Correction | Average Energy |
5 | Medium High Static Correction | Average or High Energy |
6 | High Static Correction | High Energy |
Training: It is important to properly train your dog after installing the YardMax In-Ground Fence. This should be done gradually, in short, but frequent, 10-15 minute sessions over several days, in order to achieve success. The training outline includes five phases:
Days | Goals | Activity and Static Correction Level |
---|---|---|
1 | Boundary Awareness | Using tone and vibration (Level 1) to teach the boundary of the Pet Area |
2-4 | Boundary Awareness, continued | Introduce Static Correction (Level 2), teaching your pet to stay in the Pet Area and respect the boundary. |
5-8 | Distraction Phase | Train your pet to stay within the Pet Area, even with distractions outside of the boundary. (Level 2 or higher) |
9-14 | Unleashed Supervision | Give your pet free run of the Pet Area off the leash. |
15-30 | Pet Monitoring | Your pet should be ready to run freely within the Pet Area. You should monitor your dog regularly during this phase. |
