About the AudioQuest Carbon

Steve Kindig

Wide-bandwidth, low-distortion design for focused sound

AudioQuest's Carbon digital coaxial cable is a very smart way to connect your high-performance digital gear. A good application is hooking up a CD player to a digital-to-analog converter or signal processor. AQ's digital coax cables employ materials and construction techniques that minimize distortion across an extremely wide bandwidth.

When it comes to digital audio, lots of people think that cables can't make a difference because "bits are bits." But the time relationships within a digital data stream are critical to reconstructing the analog waveform, that is, the music that reaches our ears. Time-based damage to this information — known as jitter — can make the sound flat and harsh instead of smooth and clear.

Silver-plated solid copper conductor

AQ Carbon relies on a solid conductor to eliminate strand-interaction distortion and reduce jitter. Silver-plated solid conductors are excellent for very high-frequency applications. Digital audio signals fall into this high frequency range, and they travel almost exclusively on the surface of the conductor. Since the surface is made of high-purity silver, Carbon's performance is very close to that of a solid silver cable, but priced much closer to a solid copper cable.

Multi-layer RFI and EMI shielding

Cables are a common path for unwanted noise to enter your system, but AudioQuest's multi-layer Noise Dissipation System (NDS) sets up a strong defense. Typical cable shield systems absorb and then drain noise and RF energy to component ground, which modulates and distorts the critical "reference" ground plane. NDS's application of metal- and carbon-loaded synthetics "shields the shield," absorbing and reflecting most of this energy before it reaches the layer attached to component ground. A silver-plated braid shield and an additional layer of copper foil effectively block detail-robbing electro-magnetic interference (EMI).

High-quality connectors eliminate the weakest link

Carbon's RCA connectors are plated with Hanging-Silver, a very thick and unusually pure direct-plating made possible by submerging individual plugs in pure silver, which is a superior approach to the typical process of electroplating batches of plugs by rolling them together in a drum.

AudioQuest uses extremely pure Purple Copper for the base plugs, which are fastened by cold welding — a solder-less process that uses high pressure and silver paste to minimize signal loss. By contrast, solder tends to impede the signal, and heating the silver can negatively affect its conductivity.

Features

Solid 5% Silver Conductors: Solid conductors eliminate strand-interaction distortion and reduce jitter. Solid silver-plated conductors are excellent for very high-frequency applications. These signals, being such a high frequency, travel almost exclusively on the surface of the conductor. As the surface is made of high-purity silver, the performance is very close to that of a solid silver cable, but priced much closer to solid copper cable. This is an incredibly cost effective way of manufacturing very high-quality digital coax cables.

Hard-Cell Insulation: Hard-Cell Foam insulation is used exclusively in most of AudioQuest's video and digital audio cables. Similar to Foamed-PE, it is nitrogen injected to create air pockets. "Hard" foam is used because the stiffness of the material allows the conductors in the cable to maintain the same relationship with each other along the full length of the cable, thus ensuring that the characteristic impedance of the cable is consistent.

100% Shield Coverage (Foil + Silver-Plated Braid): Shielding always plays an important role in any cable design, but the shield on coax interconnect plays an especially important role because it functions not only as a shield but a return path as well. Because of this, AudioQuest pays special attention to the shield's metal quality and the fabrication techniques as both will affect the sound.

Carbon-Based 5-Layer Noise-Dissipation System (NDS): 100% shield coverage is easy. Preventing captured RF Interference from modulating the equipment's ground reference requires AQ's Noise-Dissipation System. Metal and Carbon-Loaded synthetics prevent most RFI from reaching the equipment's ground plane.

Cold-Welded Termination: The Carbon coax digital cable's RCA terminations consist of cold-welded, hanging-silver directly over pure purple copper.

Directional: Arrows on the connectors indicate the preferred signal path from the source component to the input.

Customer Q&A

Q
I'm curious, can one use this digital coaxial cable to replace the cheap coaxial cables typically used in coax connection from TV to coax cable wall connections, and can this cable perform better than a standard coax cable when connecting from TV or FM radio to a powered antenna? I want the antenna to pick up the signal, but I don't want the coaxial cable to pick up interference.

This is not the coaxial cable you are looking for, Jerry. While sharing the same name, this cable is for high performance digital audio connections and its physical layout is identical to a standard RCA audio cable connection. This will not connect to a TV or FM F-type coaxial threaded female connection. Using a high-quality cable like the On-Q Coaxial cable in the link below is a solid option for runs under 1.5 feet. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_7176459702/On-Q-Coaxial-Cable-1-5-feet.html

Q
I'?m using a AQ Carbon .75 meter USB cable from an Ifi Zen Stream to a Cambridge CXA 81 integrated amp (amp has onboard DAC). USB bit rate is touted as superior in transmission speed. I'm curious if anyone has compared similar quality USB cables with this AQ Digital coax cable. I've read about the transmission speed differences between high vs low frequency that relate to time based signal integrity. High Speed is good. But timing is a big part of avoiding jittery harsh sound too it seems. Quality USB connection also is supposed to minimize "clock speed" jitter too. Would digital coax be better, worse or in any way different?

I can't answer specifically about other brands, but I'll share my experience. I'm using a Bluesound NODE streamer into a Peachtree NOVA 300. So I think we're in similar territory. Peachtree recommended using COAX between the NODE and the NOVA. I'm using AQ Carbon from the modem to the NODE and AQ Carbon COAX NODE to NOVA. By the way, I use OHM 2000 speakers with a Klipsch Reference series sub. All that sounded really good to me with regular cables, but when I plugged in the Carbons, it was "OH-WOW" Would I buy the Carbons again? Well, let's put it this way, tomorrow, I'll be ordering more Carbons to go from the modem to the TV and TV to the NODE. Eventually I'll do the same for my Blue-Ray player. For me the Carbons were the "sweet spot." I'd read several positive reviews and they were the best before one gets into nose bleed territory, pricewise. From what I've read, it is recommended to use the same brand throughout the system. Hope that helps.
