Our take on the Sangean HDT-1X

Connect Sangean's HDT-1X component tuner to your home audio system, and experience the crystal-clear sound and expanded listening choices of HD Radio programming. This tuner gives you access to the new, free digital programming that many AM and FM stations now broadcast. When you tune in digital HD Radio signals, you'll hear a marked improvement in sound quality — FM can approach CD-quality sound, while AM nears current FM quality. Plus, the HDT-1X does a great job pulling in standard analog broadcasts, too.

More features for HD Radio fans
Analog RCA and optical digital audio outputs make this tuner easy to hook up to almost any A/V system. A selectable analog mode lets you set the tuner to receive analog radio broadcasts only — great for steadier performance if you live in a deep fringe or difficult reception area.

The HDT-1X lets you access the additional digital-only channels some stations are broadcasting — channels which can only be received with an HD Radio tuner. And stations can send text information with their digital signals, such as station IDs, artist names, and song titles. The HDT-1X displays this text on its large, easy-to-read LCD screen.

Easy operation
Convenient controls let you search for all available AM and FM stations, analog and digital, or just those broadcasting in HD. Forty presets give you plenty of room to store your favorite stations. And the included full-function remote lets you operate the tuner from the comfort of your couch.

HD Radio Overview: HD Radio is digital FM and AM broadcasting, allowing you to enjoy your same favorite FM and AM stations with digital sound quality. FM stations offer near CD-quality sound and AM stations sound like today's analog FM stations. Because the transmission is digital, multi-path distortion (a common problem with analog radio, receiving signal reflections slightly later than the direct signal) is eliminated. Stations broadcasting HD radio can also pass along text information, such as artist name, song title, weather, traffic, etc. Another benefit of FM HD radio is a station's ability to multicast, broadcast multiple programs (up to seven) using their existing frequency. The display shows multicast stations with the frequency followed by the multicast number, 107.1-1, 107.1-2, 107.1-3, etc. Unlike digital satellite radio, there is no subscription needed to listen to HD radio.

Tuner: The Sangean HDT-1X has a Hybrid AM/FM tuner; it receives analog and digital transmissions, plus RDS information. There are several methods of tuning a station; the frequency and numeric buttons allow you to input the frequency directly, the tuning buttons manually step up or down the dial in 0.1 MHz or 10 kHz steps, the seek buttons search up or down the dial for the next strong station, Analog mode allows you to only search analog AM/FM stations and the HD seek buttons search only for HD Radio broadcasts. The tuner's frequency range coverage is as follows:

  • FM and HD FM: 87.5-108.1 MH
  • AM and HD AM: 520-1710 kHz

Presets: The tuner features 40 presets for your favorite radio stations, including primary and multicast HD stations and analog AM or FM stations. You can select 10 presets each from the FM1, FM2, AM1, and AM2 bands. Once you program the presets, you can quickly tune them using the numeric keys on the front of the tuner or the remote.

Stereo/Mono Mode: For stronger reception of weak analog AM/FM stations you can choose Mono mode versus Stereo mode.

Split Audio Mode: Split Audio Mode provides a digital signal out of the unit's left audio channel and provides an analog signal out of the unit's right audio channel.

Analog and Digital Outputs: The HDT-1X features a Left/Right stereo RCA analog audio output as well as a optical digital audio output for connection between this tuner and your home A/V system.

Display: The unit's large LCD display clearly shows the station frequency and radio band. You can adjust the displays contrast and brightness. Depending on the setting, it also displays:

  • Station information:
    • Analog: frequency and preset number (plus text for RDS stations)
    • HD: frequency and preset number plus other information the station can transmit; call letters, nickname, etc
  • Clock
  • Spectrum analyzer
  • Signal Indicator

Built-In Clock: The HDT-1X has a built-in clock that is displayed when the power is off and can be displayed instead of station information when the tuner is on.

Remote Control: The HDT-1X comes supplied with a full-function, credit card size IR wireless remote control.

Controls and Connections

Controls: The remote and front panel of the tuner have the same controls:

  • Power: turns unit On or Off
  • Tune up/down: manually tune the next frequency
  • Seek up/down: seek the next strong station
  • HD Seek up/down: seek the next strong HD station
  • Number Keypad: 0-9 buttons for preset and direct frequency input
  • Info: used to change the information displayed
  • Band: switch between AM1, AM2, FM1, and FM2
  • Preset: enter preset stations
  • Freq: input radio frequency directly

Rear Panel Connections: All the HDT-1X's connections are located on the rear of the unit.

  • FM Antenna: threaded F-type connector
  • AM Antenna: spring terminals
  • Line Output: stereo RCA jacks
  • SPDIF: optical digital audio output
  • AC: 2-pin jack for included cord
