Single-disc CD player/USB port for iPod®/iPhone®
Our take on the Yamaha CD-S300 by Crutchfield's Dave Bar
Play your CDs and your iPod, too
Yamaha's versatile CD-S300 not only plays your CDs, including home-burned MP3 and WMA mix discs, but it also gives you a front-panel USB port for plugging in your iPod, iPhone®, or iPad®. This lets you take advantage of the CD player's high-performance digital-to-analog converter — a big improvement over the iPod's built-in DAC — for the best sound quality from your portable music library. Either way you play it, you'll enjoy great-sounding music through your home stereo system.
Built to perform
The CD-S300's sophisticated internal design includes isolated power supplies for the digital and analog sections, a high-quality digital-to-analog converter, and short signal paths that minimize the chances of interference or signal loss. The end result is richly detailed sound with engaging warmth and musicality. You can improve sound quality even further with Pure Direct mode, which turns off the front panel display and the digital audio output to eliminate sources of potential noise.

Sophisticated Circuitry & Layout: Yamaha technicians devoted a great deal of time and effort to designing the overall interior layout of parts and circuit boards, a factor that significantly affects sound quality. As a result, the power supplies for the motor drive, display and USB sections, as well as the digital, and analog sections are individually isolated, eliminating electromagnetic interference among them. To achieve ideal weight balance for stable performance, the drive mechanism is located in the center of the unit.
High Quality Parts: Yamaha puts a great deal of effort into the selection and matching of parts and materials. A high-grade acoustic capacitor, a new low noise/high-gain bandwidth op amp, and the use of damping material under the transformer and around the signal cables are just a few examples of Yamaha's commitment to great sound quality.
Short Signal Paths: The highly logical and symmetrical internal layout of parts and circuit boards are designed to keep the signal paths on each board as short as possible. This purposeful design also keeps the paths between sections straight and short, minimizing the chance of signal loss or interference.
Laser Pickup Floating Mechanism: The laser pickup is isolated on a floating mechanism so its delicate operation cannot be affected by vibration.
Intelligent Digital Servo System: This type of system uses a microcomputer to monitor the signal, adjusting pickup tracking and focus, as well as spindle motor speed, to compensate for any problems.
Burr Brown 24-bit/192kHz DAC: The Yamaha CD-S300 CD player employs a Burr Brown 24-bit/192kHz DAC ensuring excellent conversion precision, S/N ratio, and dynamic range.
CD Compatibility: The Yamaha CD-S300 CD player will play CD-Audio, CD-Text, CD-R, and CD-RW discs (12cm or 8cm).
CD Text: When a CD Text encoded CD is played, this unit will display the CD Text information - disc title, artist name, and track name.
MP3/WMA Playback: The CD-S300 supports playback of compressed MP3 (8-320 kbps) and WMA (16-320 kbps) files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs using the ISO 9660 format. The CD player can recognize up to 256 folders, 512 filers per folder, and a maximum of 999 total files.
LCD Display: The Yamaha CD player features a front-panel LCD display that shows the current status of the unit. You can select from elapsed time of the current track, remaining time of the current track, or the remaining time of the disc. You can also temporarily display the filename of your MP3/WMA files up to 28 characters. The front-panel display offers 4 brightness settings.
Pure Direct: The CD-S300 offers Pure Direct, which is the same popular feature included in Yamaha amplifiers and receivers. By pressing the button on the front panel or on the remote control, it shuts down the digital audio output and turns off the display. This achieves the lowest possible noise interference and, therefore, the highest sound quality of the analog audio output.
Playback Modes: The CD-S300 offers the following playback modes.
- Program: You can customize the playback order of up to 24 track store on an Audio CD. This operation is not available for MP3/WMA playback.
- Random: You can play back tracks in random sequence from and Audio CD, CD-R/RW, or USB device.
- Repeat: You can play back a single track or all tracks repeatedly from a Audio CD, CD-R/RW, or USB device.
- Repeat A-B: You can repeat a specified section of a track on an audio CD. This operation is not available for MP3/WMA playback.
- Ready Mode: Pauses playback after each track, allowing you to start the next rack at any desired time.
Note: This unit retains the current Repeat & Random playback mode after turning off the power.
Search Functions: The CD-S300 offers the following search functions.
- Direct Search: You can enter the desired track number for an Audio CD using the numeric keypad (0-9) on the remote control. This operation is not available for MP3/WMA playback.
- Skip: You can skip to the beginning of the current, next, or previous track of an audio CD, CD-R/RW, or USB device.
- Fast Forward/Reverse: You can rapidly advance or reverse through a track on an Audio CD, CD-R/RW, or USB device. Each time you press the search key, the search speed increases by 2 levels.
Remote Control: The Yamaha CD-S300 single disc CD player comes with a full-function IR remote control for wireless operation of the unit. The remote has a range up to 20 feet with an angle of 30-degrees to the left and right of the unit's front-panel IR eye.
Analog Audio Output: The Yamaha CD player is equipped with one set of stereo RCA jacks.
Digital Audio Output: The Yamaha CD-S300 features a optical (toslink) and coaxial (RCA) digital output.
USB Port: The USB port on the front panel allows you to play MP3 (8-320 kbps) and WMA (16-320 kbps) music files from a USB memory device (flash drive), card reader, or portable audio player that use FAT16/FAT32 format. The unit will recognize up to 256 folders, 512 files per folder, and a maximum of 32,767 total files. The unit's USB port supports basic playback controls, such as Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Reverse, Skip (Next/Previous); as well as folder and track select.
iPod/iPhone Compatible: The Yamaha CD player's USB port also supports playback of your iPod/iPhone's music files (via the USB/dock cable supplied with your iPod). The CD-S300 offers audio playback, basic control (Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Reverse, Previous/Next) and charging of your iPod. Advanced navigation is still done through your iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen. Artist and song information will need to be viewed on your connected iPod's LCD screen. The Yamaha CD-S300 is "made for iPod/iPhone" compliant and supports the following iPod/iPhone models and functions (as of 9/27/2012):
|iPod/iPhone Model||Generation||Tested Version||Media Type||Control Type||Display Type||Charge|
|Audio||Video||Remote||iPod/iPhone||Artist/Song Text||Track Info|
| clickwheel |
Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to wait until a newer software update is available.

Seems like exactly what I want for a good price. Good return policy if I don't like it. [ isobel Jul 15, 2018 ]
I am pairing this with the Yamaha R-S202 stereo receiver. The price was a bit more than I would have preferred to spend, however this seems like a solid performing unit. I contemplated getting a multi-disc changer but opted for the single-disc. I like the USB input on the front, and while the unit appears utilitarian as opposed to sleek, it should fit in perfectly with the other components. [ JUSTIN Jul 14, 2018 ]
I just want a CD player to play classic jazz not available on vinyl. I have no SACD's. I have found that the Yamaha brand is reliable. [ WILLIAM Jun 24, 2018 ]
Great reviews - a simple uncomplicated entry level CD player that's performs well. Sometimes simplicity overcomes the complexity of more touted and expensive brands. [ Gary Jun 24, 2018 ]

Consistently Good reviews of sound. iPod/iPhone usb input [ DANIEL A Apr 26, 2018 ]
My final decision was made based on two things. One being my trust in certain manufacturers based on previous experience, The second involves my scan of product reviews and user's general thoughts about their on-going experience with the item. When I put that all together, thanks to your site's wealth of information, I was able to select the component that I felt best met my needs. In this case, the Yamaha CD-S300 single disk player. [ Don A. Apr 23, 2018 ]
have Yamaha amp integrated well [ Frederick Apr 12, 2018 ]
It seems to be a simple piece of equipment, but when you see at the specifications it is as competitive as other models more expensive. Besides that, I have been using Yamaha products for a while, and they are high quality. [ David Apr 01, 2018 ]
I'm a senior citizen on a fixed income and the price for the quality appealed to me. I was looking at another player of the same price, however, the front USB port was the deal breaker. I have another setup in a different room with the USB port on the receiver. Being able to listen to music all night without touching the equipment is nice. [ Donald Mar 20, 2018 ]
Read reviews, fit my budget, NED was out of stock, in addition I had previously bought a Yamaha amp so it will match well. [ Greg Mar 07, 2018 ]
I chose this because of the usb capability so I can play my iPod and iPhone through it. [ Grant Edward Feb 19, 2018 ]
I own a Yamaha R-S700 Receiver/Amp with which I'm very happy. My Sony CD unit has been failing repeatedly, even after repairs. So this Yamaha CD-S300 was an obvious choice. [ Gordon Jan 30, 2018 ]

I always felt the need to upgrade my cheap dvd player, [ MARCOS GUERRA Mar 31, 2017 ]
I love music and care deeply about getting a pure sound. I prefer vinyl, but some material these days only comes out on cd. When looking for a good cd player, I particularly have been looking at brands. My first receiver was a 1980 Yamaha R-500 which was my dads favorite receiver. After buying two of them I moved on to the more powerful newer Yamaha Amplifier A-S500. As my cd collection has grown, I have chosen this fine Yamaha CD-S300. Yamaha has served me well, and I want more of it. [ Benjamin Mar 21, 2017 ]
I know the name Yamaha from my husbands stereo systems. [ Janice Mar 11, 2017 ]
I amSetting up a two channel listening room. [ Brian Mar 06, 2017 ]
Felt confident that this bottom of the line unit would be totally satisfactory. I was right. [ Jack Mar 03, 2017 ]
I have owned YAMAHA products for over 30 years and all are still working great! This is my second CD-S300. The original is still working fine but I needed a second player and was thinking of the multi-player CD-C600. Unfortunately the CD-C600 is too large for the space I have so I opted for another 300. I know what I am getting with YAMAHA and am very satisfied. [ James Feb 21, 2017 ]
I have vintage Yamaha equipment that has been trouble free and still sounds fantastic. Great reviews on this new Yamaha CD player. [ Bert Feb 12, 2017 ]
LOVE YAMAHA EQUIPMENT! [ Michael Jan 25, 2017 ]
Was a toss-up between this and NAD. I've used NAD CD players in the past and was very, very happy with them, but the USB port on the face of the Yamaha is what sold me on this particular model. Let's hope it sounds as good as the NAD did. [ Duane Jan 23, 2017 ]
To go with the Yamaha R-N500 receiver I bought last year. I like the sound and the operation of the Yamaha including the design of the iPhone app. [ David Jan 20, 2017 ]
Yamaha quality, and well laid out controls. [ Carlos Jan 20, 2017 ]
My old Sony CD player still works, but it doesn't like CD-R discs and of course it doesn't know what MP3 discs are. [ PETER Jan 18, 2017 ]
Moderately priced and the 5 disc carousel tray sticks after a certain amount of time, so I went with a single disc tray instead. [ Glenn Jan 07, 2017 ]
Known brand quality. Simplicity of both front and back panels. [ Robert Dec 30, 2016 ]
Needed a quality CD player at affordable price- iPhone connectivity a plus [ Aleksandar Dec 28, 2016 ]
Price, positive reviews and ipod compatibility [ William Dec 25, 2016 ]
Relatively inexpensive. Good reviews. I like Yamaha. [ Andy Dec 10, 2016 ]
This was well recommended by an friend who builds loud speakers. He also has a Yamaha, but a higher model. [ Mary K. Dec 05, 2016 ]
I had an earlier version of it for a long time, which worked well for me. I like that it is a single cd player. [ Marie Dec 02, 2016 ]
Reviews were good. [ Kate Nov 28, 2016 ]
I hope I've bought a highly rated, uncomplicated cd player. My BOSE player died after 17 years, and I didn't want to have to mortgage the house to buy a replacement. [ ann marie Nov 26, 2016 ]
Wanted something to play USB/MP3/WMA and did not want a new receiver or have to use the TV to select songs. 20 year old JVC 6+1 changer died 2 weeks ago. Could use my BD player for CD/USB, do not want to turn the TV on and it is somewhat slow for CD playback. Hopefully, this player will be faster. This was the cheapest one offered by Crutchfield. There are only a few others cheaper on the market that support USB but they don't have the same features/capabilities or as many positive reviews. [ DALLAS Nov 01, 2016 ]
Have a 801 receiver, needed a good cd player to match! [ WILLIAM S Oct 15, 2016 ]
Abe also commented this for the sound quality and it will work good with my Yamaha receiver. [ mark Oct 02, 2016 ]
quality and sound [ Sandar Sep 13, 2016 ]
my receiver is a Yamaha,so now I only need one remote. [ J Aug 16, 2016 ]
I read several reviews on this piece CD player. It seems to be a bargain at $299. Also it should match up with the yamaha RS700 receiver I also purchased. [ Charles Aug 09, 2016 ]
Reviews were solid, matches perfectly with the yamaha amp I will be buying soon. [ Joseph David Jul 29, 2016 ]
I've always been impressed with Yamaha products...more and more manufacturers are getting away from certain products and to find a single tray CD player with a USB input is outstanding for my needs....not to mention a great price for this too [ richard Jul 16, 2016 ]
Best reviews on Crutchfield and other sites, Burr-Brown DAC and value for $$$. [ Gerard Jul 02, 2016 ]
Not an super audiophile, but always bought Yamaha. I think it's sound is the best. [ Donald Jun 10, 2016 ]
Good previous experience with Crutchfield. [ Gary Jun 03, 2016 ]
reviews, price and weight [ David May 17, 2016 ]
Read reviews from different sites and high positive reviews seem to be the norm. Matches the R300 receiver I own as well. [ Roger May 01, 2016 ]
Previous experience with Yamaha products and USB connection on front panel [ Jeffrey Apr 11, 2016 ]
good value, decent acoustics, reliable brand [ Barry Mar 03, 2016 ]
A reasonable price for a decent quality CD player with smaller dimensions that fit my space. [ Richard Feb 27, 2016 ]
I was looking for a reasonably priced CD player with a good DAC and signal-to-noise ratio. It was a choice between the NAD C516BEE or the Yamaha CD-S300. The two players have very similar specs. I decided to go with the Yamaha as it also offers a USB input to connect your iPod/digital music player. [ Sunitha Feb 21, 2016 ]
I had Yamaha equipment in the past. It lasted 37+ years and is still going strong. I recently purchased new Yamaha receiver to replace original. Great quality. Reasonably priced. [ William Jan 21, 2016 ]
Because it is one of your best seller [ Reynaldo Jan 20, 2016 ]

This is a simple 'no frills' item that does an excellent job without incorporating unnecessary features. I'm happier without a multitude of buttons to push and flashing lights. Simple principle; there's less to go wrong! [ Jonathan Jan 01, 2016 ]
This unit seems to have the best specifications for the price. [ Charles Dec 31, 2015 ]

12 questions already asked
3.5" tall, 17 1/8" wide, 10" deep (case dimension) [ Alan Dec 19, 2017 ]
The official specs of the Yamaha CD-S300 list the dimensions as [17-1/8-inches w x 3-1/8-inches h x 10-1/4-inches d]. I always add a couple of inches to the depth to account for connections. And I'd note that the unit runs warm, and so it might like an extra inch of ventilation space above it in a stack or rack. I have found it to be an excellent, smooth-working, high-resolution CD player, especially when connected via toslink/optical. [ M Dec 16, 2017 ]
From the Crutchfield Site, the dimensions are: 17-1/8"W x 3-3/8"H x 11-1/2"D. [ Mark Dec 16, 2017 ]
17 1/8 w x 9 7/8 d (excluding rear jacks) x 3 3/8 tall (including feet) [ Richard Dec 16, 2017 ]
Don't know if it would. I imagine the remotes are pretty similar but can't say for sure that that the R- S500 remote will work the S-300. Jack [ JACK Oct 03, 2016 ]
Mark, unfortunately I have no idea as I have only tried he remote which came with the unit. Perhaps one of the Crutchfield "Ask an Expert" folks can help. Go the the Crutchfield website for contact info which this response will not permit me to list. Sorry. Don [ Don Oct 03, 2016 ]
Sorry I can't help you, but I don't know the answer to that. [ Susan Oct 03, 2016 ]
If you have seperate Controls on your receiver to select either the digital or the analog inputs I dont see why this should not be ok. [ MICHAEL Jul 05, 2016 ]
The manual says that the digital outputs are disabled when the mode "Pure Direct" is turned on. Pure Direct is a feature that turns off most of the panel indicators. It reduces electrical noise that can appear (at very low level) in the output signal. When using Pure Direct, the manual says use the analog outputs. I infer from this that when Pure Direct is off, both analog and digital outputs are active. A Wiki article on S/PDIF says S/PDIF is unidirectional, so the receiver could not reply to the CD player to turn the digital signal on and off. The player has both fiber optic digital output and coaxial (RCA connector) digital output, so both are unidirectional S/PDIF. [ Philip Jul 05, 2016 ]
I think your receiver will only use an analogue input. The CD Player is taking a digital signal and converting it to an analogue signal through the use of a D/A converter. That said, your CD player is sending your receiver an analogue signal. Suggest you use your CD input or Aux input to read your CD player. [ Charles Jul 05, 2016 ]
I don't know whether it works or not as I have a MS Lumia 640 and have never tried to use the feature. I have had numerous problems attempting to employ my Harmony universal control through my entertainment center, but that may be due to my ineptness. Sorry I wasn't any help! Curt [ Curtiss Jun 27, 2016 ]
Yes, it works well with the iPhone. You just plug your iPhone into the CD player using a lightning/USB cord (the normal charging cord) and enable USB input on the CD player (press the CD/USB button). You can then easily play iTunes, Pandora, Spotify, etc., through your CD player. [ Tom Jun 27, 2016 ]
i never used it this way with my iPhone. I imagine it would though if there is an app. Check the App Store. [ PETER R Jun 27, 2016 ]
Yes. The feed to the CD player via USB is digital and will be decoded by the CD player. Further, if you have an outboard third-party DAC, you can feed the digital output from the iPhone through the CD-S300 to the DAC using the CD-S300's digital output. [ Tom Jun 27, 2016 ]
Sorry, no idea. I am an android user. [ DAVID Aug 06, 2015 ]
Yes. Just plug the iPod into the CD player using the iPod's USB charging cord. Works like a champ. [ Tom Jun 27, 2016 ]
Good news. It is compatible with the iPod Classic. You can get a full breakdown of compatibility on the "Details" tab. [ Jeff May 04, 2015 ] Staff
Hi-- I'm sorry, but I can not answer this question. I purchased the YAMAHA CD S300 for my 83 year old Dad- an older audio-file. He has other components including a high end turntable. He has never used the iPod ( although he has one). I can tell you that the quality of this product like all YAMAHA products is superb. I set it up with him and have used it while visiting his house. I am very impressed and he is very happy with it. I hope someone can answer your question. Perhaps YAMAHA has a customer service phone number or email. [ Wendy May 04, 2015 ]
The Yamaha CD-S300 is designed for MP3 and WMA version 8 and 9 files loaded onto USB flash drives. It will not play these files if they are copyright-protected. It does accept the FLAC PCM format loaded on USB flash drives, but I don't know to what resolution. I don't use the USB port myself. I generally just shove a CD into it which it plays beautifully. Sorry, I'm old school and prefer an LP or CD to downloaded copies. I still wish quadraphonic had caught on. [ GLENN Sep 21, 2014 ]
Sorry don't know as I have only played cd's through it-it does a mighty fine job of that though. [ Eric Sep 18, 2014 ]
no [ JOSEPH A Sep 17, 2014 ]
I believe no because a search of the 'net and since I owned the unit since last October, I couldn't play FLAC, but I believe Yamaha cd-s700 does. Hope this helps. [ KENNETH Sep 17, 2014 ]
This player does not play split track cds that I am aware of. It does play all other cds that I own, including hybrid cds. [ H. KEITH Aug 17, 2014 ]
Yes as long as it is in one of the formats listed in the description of the player; CD CDR CDRW from what I understand about split track cd's it will play any CD, including split track. You can also google it about this specific player to see what it says Kevin. Also, this is an excellent player that I have had since last October and I love CD's still so the single disc player usb/cd option being able to play music from a flash drive is awesome with a great design can't go wrong here Kevin. I hope I helped. Sincerely. Ken. [ KENNETH Aug 17, 2014 ]
Thank you Krissy. That is good advice. [ larry Mar 21, 2014 ]

I'm sorry , I just don't know about turntable connectivity with this unit . Otherwise, I have been happy so far . [ ROSS Dec 26, 2013 ]
Yes [ THOMAS Dec 24, 2013 ]
if your turntable has RCA out put cables I'm sure it will connect and work well. I play my i pod thru the Z-580 using the RCA cables that came with the 580 and a RCA to 3.5 adapter. [ GARY L Dec 24, 2013 ]
Sorry, not sure, haven't tried via a laptop [ JAMES T Dec 18, 2013 ]
Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure it will! I play Pandora on my Ipad, and it plays through the usb port just fine. Also, you can get a thumb drive/flash drive. Download your music content on that, then plug into usb port and it will play! Hope that helps! Happy Holidays! [ MICHAEL Dec 18, 2013 ]
that's what the port is for [ JOSEPH A Dec 18, 2013 ]
Yes [ TREVIN Dec 18, 2013 ]
Hi Craig happy to answer your question. I just bought this player 1 month ago and it's awesome but I just tried usb to usb on pc and unless you use a memory stick usb with files copied from your computer usb to usb does not detect no mtter what I disabled and re-enabled pc speakers the whole deal. I have a sonh vaio laptop if that helps. If your not used to knowing ho to download and copy files to a memory stick a good one to buy is PNY 8 gb can hold up to 1500 songs! I have about 800 half used. I would recommend this CD player. Happy Holidays! Ken Allen. [ KENNETH Dec 18, 2013 ]
no. search for a "B" USB input....USB A to B.....(the square USB)......i recommend a separate DAC. Crutchfield sells the Cambridge DAC Magic 100, i own it and it works great. Peace. [ michael Dec 18, 2013 ]
Yes it plays MP3 on a usb stick I use. But the CD' sound better. [ JOSEPH Dec 18, 2013 ]
