Audio upgrade for a 2015 Dodge Charger SRT

Adding muscle to a sound system

We're lucky to have beautiful backroads here in Central Virginia, and David, owner of a road-loving '15 Dodge Charger SRT, knows how to enjoy them. But the soundtrack to his cinematic drives didn't have the muscle he craved. Enter Crutchfield...

Selecting a system

The first thing David told me about himself, with a chuckle, was, "I like my music loud and I like it crisp." It turns out he and I share a mutual adoration of '80s hair bands, and I know from experience that the only way to listen is with the volume cranked.

Energized by his vision of what the sound in his Charger could be, David visited our Charlottesville, VA, retail store and spoke to Nate, one of our Advisors. Dialing in on listening preferences, budget, and vehicle fit, Nate and David designed a custom system, then passed the baton to the store's team of installers to make the magic happen.

RF Component in front door

The speakers for the job

When David mentioned bands like Guns 'N' Roses and Skid Row, Nate zeroed in on a Rockford Fosgate component system for front-row enjoyment. These well-reviewed speakers deliver the loudness David was after, and the Mylar tweeters serve up that crispness for the high notes of Slash's epic guitar solos.

With Soundskins sound damping material installed in the Charger's doors, David can keep the rattle and hum out of his Sunset Strip sound. Because David uses this speed demon primarily for weekend fun, the main function of the rear deck's Rockford Fosgate 6"x9" 2-ways and the rear door speakers is to support the front-seat experience. While fit kept him from adding matching Rockford Fosgate speakers to the rear doors, Pioneer satisfies the "loud and crisp" profile to provide the back fill David needed.

Amps in trunk

Amps and processing

To get serious volume, Nate set David up with serious power. JL Audio's XD600/6v2 amplifier drives all the speakers with ease, and a PAC AmpPRO interface let David keep his factory radio (he loves his factory navigation!) while providing the best possible source signal. If you're interested in integrating an aftermarket amplifier into a factory system, it's always worth considering adding a digital signal processor as well to give you more control over your sound.

Sub in trunk

Double-loaded bass

David told me that the bar was high for him when it comes to bass.

"I have a system in my Ford F-250 that has spoiled me when it comes to big bass, so I had high expectations. This MTX ported enclosure with dual 12" subs is 1000% better than the factory bass I was living with," He said, referring to the subwoofers installed in the Charger's trunk.

Those subs are driven by 500 watts RMS of power from Kenwood's KAC-9106D mono amp. All of that adds up to awesome impact. David added, "You can't hear it outside the car, but inside... it's a major music experience."

So, if you ever find yourself on a Virginia backroad, and a red streak flies by, it just might be David enjoying the thunderous sound of Def Leppard.
