American International FMK-550 Dash Kit

Fit factory opening well. Instructions are pretty good for various vehicles it fits. Installed in 2011 Ford Ranger and had to cut off 2 tabs and file down little spacer nubs. Cutting off the tabs was easy with a oscillating multitool. After filing down the excess the tabs were far enough back that once you install into your dash you can't see where those tabs were so cosmetically you don't have to be super careful with your file.

American International FMK-550 Dash Kit

2005 Ford Escape. It fit well in the dash but the rear support attaches to the vehicle but not the radio and the radio isn't securely attached.

Great fit.

This dash kit was a great fit for my 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis. The pocket only fits on top because of the shape of the radio compartment unless you install a very shallow radio that doesn't play disks. I didn't need any of the other parts in the kit. I had to remove the two tabs by gently bending them back and forth until they snapped off and it popped right in to the opening.

A bit frustrating

The stereo doesn't fit through this like the instructions say- it only fits if you push the stereo against it from behind. Therefore, the only way to remove the stereo is to remove this dash kit which the instructions say in 'extremely difficult'. So, now that I want to hook up a sub/amp to my stereo I'm facing with figuring out how to get this impossible piece of plastic out of my dash so I can access the back of the stereo. This does the trick if you mess with it a whole bunch, but overall I thought it would be more straightforward and not cause headaches.

Fit into dashboard very well. Poor design for the din sleeve installation. Tabs on the bottom cannot be bent to retain the unit because storage box it in the way.

Must have trim kit!

OMG! What a great accessory. This trim kit is outstanding. Easy to install and provided a nice finish to close up the space. Instructions were a bit tricky, needed to read though 3 times to get all of the details, but in the end, no broken tabs or pieces (whew!). Looks great.

Replaced a stock radio/CD player in a 2010 Ford Ranger. The new deck I selected said this is the correct dash kit. Only had to pop off two plastic tabs, insert the deck sleeve and pop it into place. It fits perfectly.

Insufficient

At first glance this adapter plate looks well made and seems to fit. In reality the molded clips that hold the sides into the factory frame are too short and the catch surface too small to really grab the frame. It does not stay put.

2004 F250

Instructions were not great. The dash kit worked ok though. The tabs need to be broken off and the receiver needs to go on the bottom. The pocket goes to the top. Once this was figured out, everything was great!

Had to cut and modify to fit Pioneer radio

Had to call tech service as faceplate sleeve/radio did not fit into dash kit as outlined in instructions. Tech service walked me through on how to modify and get it to work! Good thing I had a dremel tool to cut the plastic to secure the radio to the bracket. I don't know if someone else less DIY could have made this work. If not I would be concerned about Crutchfields next solution??

Fitment is not flush and the directions could be more clear but it works. Some single dins come with this sleeve on the front half of the radio. You have to take this off to use the kit.

Very nice product

nice product and really clean look when installed correctly. 2003 ranger installs require the spacer nubs on the backside of the mount to be ground down flat and the mounting tabs at the top to be removed. This is so that the mount sits flat, and the clips fully engage on the trim of the dash. I had to remove the trim ring on the mount also otherwise the single din doesn't fit. Very nice product.

Evidently doesn't work with all single DIN radios...

Dash kit fit nicely in our daughter's 2001 Ford Ranger, and it looks good. One problem is that the single DIN Dual brand radio mount doesn't "mesh" correctly with this dash kit, because the dash kit is too thick. The correct mounting procedure is to slide the radio into the kit from the front, then slide the radio's rectangular "locking piece" onto the radio from the back. The radio face plate is then clamped against the front surface of the dash kit, while the locking piece is clamped against the back surface of the mounting kit, and the radio is held solid. Unfortunately, the space allowed between the face plate and the locking piece isn't enough for the thickness of the dash kit. Therefore, the locking piece can't slide far enough onto the radio to lock. It butts up against the dash kit before the lock tabs engage the radio. As a result, the radio can't be locked into the dash kit. I don't think the radio or the locking piece can be modified to overcome this, so the only solution I found was to enlarge the dash kit opening to accomodate the radio with the locking piece already installed. I made it fit as tight as possible, so the radio is relatively snug, but not actually firmly locked into place. Don't really like that, but it works. I'm guessing after-market dash kits and factory original mounts must vary in their thickness, or this wouldn't be a problem. Live and learn, I guess.....

Easier than expected

It was my first time installing an aftermarket radio, but I have some experience working on other parts of cars. The process was easy and the instructions were great. The parts were perfectly compatible and the wiring guide was helpful, especially when showing which wires wouldn't be used.

Size great, tabs useless.

I bought this for my 2005 Ford Explorer Sport Trak, as was recommended as the correct choice by the website. The size opening is perfect, but the mounting tabs are totally useless, as they do not match any screw holes at all. I broke the tabs off, and wedged shims in to make it somewhat snug. Otherwise, the fit is perfect, without any way to attach it.

Dash Kit Fit Perfectly

This fit perfectly in my 2003 Ford Ranger. I'd give if 5 stars, but the instructions are horrible. The radio frame is pre-attached, and should be removed before trying to install. Nothing in the instructions tells you that. However, Crutchfield's technical support was able to help me. They should tell you to watch the video on American International's website. Had I watched before trying to install, it would have made the installation easy.

Like another reviewer noted, it does not secure into the dash very well on a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis. It's held in there by nothing more than luck, and perhaps gravity. (this is in consideration of any and all possible adjustments you can make as per the instructions, if this item is to fit better one would have to invent something/ add something additional to it)

radio mount

easy to install, but poorly engineered as to its removal there is no easy way to remove it without damaging it or your dash must be removed with dash and 2 mount bolts for dash must be left out to be able to remove dash and radio as a unit. bolts are under top of radio mnt. you must leave them out at radio mnt installation

I gave it 4 stars because I had to trim the opening to fit the stereo in . I did it with a utility knife - new blade and I have great knife skills and hand strength so I would say for the normal person who doesn't carry and use one every day I will be a 8 difficulty and a 10.9 on the danger scale - use their recommended tool . Looks great all done and I got another little pocket for easy storage .

97 Grand Marquis owners read!

I'm not sure if it was user error, or some variance in either my dash, or the product, but fit is less than secure. The instructions were very clear in how to mount the stereo into the dash kit, and that is quite secure. Fitting the dash kit into the car, however, was confusing as I could not find detailed instructions, and proceeded as I would with any other dash kit. The clips that secure it to the dash do not seem to fit well, and I can pull on it and it will initially feel secure, but if I apply constant force, and wiggle it slightly, it will literally pull directly out of the dash.
