It's a nice receiver but it is not easy to set up. Very complicated and the small screen doesn't help any. Seems to have plenty of power sound is just OK. Not as refined as my yamaha as1200.

Awesome upgrade from Onkyo

Verified employee review (What's this?)

After our Onkyo RZ-810 died after only 3 years we were looking for a new better option. I love Yamaha guitars and motorcycles so decided to try one of their receivers. Very happy I did the sound is so much better from this receiver then the Onkyo. Better separation and wider sound stage, it feels like it is pushing my Polk RTi speakers better as well even though it is rated at less power. The ESS Sabre DAC is amazing in this unit it adds just a little extra sparkle to highs without sounding bright. The build quality is above and beyond any of my old Denons and the Onkyo. It is built like a tank. If it lasts as long as the reputation leads me to think it will I'll be very happy with my purchase.

Pros: Good power even when driving 5.1.2 Build quality seems outstanding Sound separation and sound stage width and depth

Cons: Takes a few seconds to boot up

Awesome unit with a ton of features

Mark S. from GILMER, TX on 2/13/2025

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

I bought this Yamaha unit thinking of the durability and long life. I needed a unit with at least two sub outs, and my wife doesn't understand my loving great sound and video. I wanted to buy the 9.2 receiver that is a step above this one, but the wife is the boss, ... sort of, and said no. After owning a couple of Onkyo units, and a Sony unit, I was a little upset that they didn't last but a few years each. I bought the Sony unit in a box store after owning only Onkyo units for many years. The Sony 7.1 unit sounded very good, but didn't last but about 7-1/2 years. I have known people who have owned Yamaha units the entire time I've owned the 2 Onkyo units and the Sony Unit. After a few months of tweaking this unit, I have finally figured how to get the settings set the way I want them to match my open plan living area with cathedral ceilings. WOW, are there a bunch of different settings that change the sound. Unfortunately there is no real usable manual that comes with the unit. You have to download a whole lot of pages, and print them if you want, but I think it's really a waste of paper because of their complexity. The features are very layered, and there's a learning curve to figure them out. After buying a couple of SVS PB-2000 subs to go along with the Infinity PS12 I already owned (for at least 18 years), this unit sounds better than any unit I have ever heard..., at least to me..., and that's what counts. You can't go wrong with this unit! It's worth

Pros: A ton of options, extremely good sound, a definite BEAST

Cons: User manual does not come with receiver-just the hookup instructions. There's definitely a learning curve to using this unit to its fullest.

Clean natural sound...still tinkering with it

Richard from Henrico, VA on 2/11/2025

Verified employee review (What's this?)

So far so good. Im still setting up the unit and tinkering with the sound settings. To get the sound really good for the room, you have to modify the settings which this unit allows easily. The interface is very thorough. Interestingly, I find myself using the remote to bounce between the different sound effects and DTS depending on the show/movies showing. Xm radio symphony is perfect. The sound is completely neutral...which is one of the hallmarks of Yamaha vs the other equally good HTR at a similar price point. I would certainly recommend you consider this unit for a 5.1.2 setup

Pros: Clean Natural Sound Many settings to tinker with easy switching between different sound programs for different programs

Cons: This is going to sound odd...the only possible negative is that the sound is sooo neutral it almost sounds like something is wrong. Cant really describe it...other HTR have unique signatures...warm...bright...deep...this sound is just perfectly neutral.

Unit appears to be extremely rugged and well built as were my previous two Yamaha receivers, both of which are still going strong. Sound output is great. My main issue (and what prevented a 5 star review) is the setup. Using the online manual requires prior significant sound knowledge I don't currently have and didn't realize I needed until now, as I'm now retired and have more time to dig into the details. The A4A is heavy at over 35 lbs. The only other issue is the screen is too small to read from the viewing distance. However, I am a happy customer.

Verified employee review (What's this?)

Bought the Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A4A, very happy with it so far. I went with Crutchfield to get the 60 days return and tech support, so glad I did. After setup, I had no bass, had gone through all the settings being very familiar with Yamaha receivers. Called Crutchfield tech support and spoke to Caeser, we checked the usual settings, then he had me check the AI setting which defaults to ON. Once turned off the bass was back and the sound was glorious. I'm sure I would've stumbled on that sooner or later, but that surely saved me a lot of time looking for the problem. Compared to my old RX-V379 the Highs and mid-range are much sharper, more detailed imaging, and the extra power (110W vs 70W) really brings my Klipsch RP series speakers to life.

The receiver is easy to set up and works great. Sound is clean and powerful on my 4 ohm Martin Logan floor stereo speakers. Not the most esthetically pleasing receiver I have owned though. A disappointment is that I never received the $100 credit that Crutchfield specified was part of the purchase. The reason for 1 star off.

Pros: Performance to price ratio is right

Cons: Esthetics could be better

I will be returning this unit to Crutchfield. The Bluetooth, blu-ray, and the firestick are great but the unit does not mesh with satellite TV. The screen and sound are intermittent. When changing channels it loses signal cutting off sound and picture. Brand new higg speed HDMI cable. The only correction is unplugging the unit for 5 minutes so it has a chance to reset. For this price tag I think it's not worth having to mess around with it every time I try to watch a game.

This thing is a BEAST! It provides the power that my reference premier speakers need and makes them sound fantastic. The YAPO was a breeze to do, I did a little tweaking on the settings afterwards, but not a problem doing it. The video playback is very good. This baby has more to offer than I will probably ever need but if I ever do, it's there. I really like how the remotes backlite lights up when you pick it up. Somebody was thinking. So if your thinking about getting this Yamaha just bite the bullet and do it, you won't regret it. Happy listening and CRANK IT UP!

Pros: Everything that this Yamaha has done for me so far is A+. Need I say more?

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I am so disappointed in this receiver. It replaces a very old Yamaha that worked fine but I wanted to upgrade. If you are running an optical cable from your tv to this receiver beware that it constantly has a 5 to 10 second delay before the audio starts. Also, randomly the sound will just drop out for 5-10 seconds. Unfortunately 90 percent of the time this is how I use the receiver. Otherwise it is solid but this major flaw makes me regret my purchase. (this delay never happened with my old Yamaha receiver.) I have done all the software updates and this issue has not been remedied.

Superb Yamaha sound

Andrew from GREELEY, CO on 4/5/2024

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I recently purchased the Yamaha Aventage RX-A4A as an upgrade from my RX-V6A (which is a great budget receiver and I've had for about a year), and wow am I impressed. The first thing I immediately noticed upon unboxing is the sheer heft (the RX-A4A is quite heavy) and excellent build quality. After running through the initial speaker setup, which I did manually without YPAO for now, I started listening to movie soundtracks which I know very well. I really like the sound quality, as everything is a step up, more nuanced and refined, but keeping with the Yamaha sound. Clean, crisp, natural and neutral. Given that it is twice the price of the RX-V6A, is the RX-A4A two times better? I think that will largely depend on one's speakers and if they need the full 40 Gbps HDMI and chroma 4:4:4 support (primarily for PC and console gamers). For TV/movie watching, no, most people should be just fine with the 24 Gbps HDMI 2.1 ports. If you have fairly high end, detailed speakers, then yes, I believe the price difference of the A4A is worth it. But both receivers are excellent in their respective classes. I feel that the A4A offers sonic improvements that will be appreciable with my Dali and MartinLogan speakers. I can definitely recommend Yamaha RX-A4A if it's an option you are considering.

Pros: +Excellent build quality +Superb sound quality +Highly configurable +MusicCast is excellent for streaming and basic controls

Cons: -Onscreen GUI is still a bit dated -Probably should have 9 channel processing and pre-outs at this price class

Great for 4 k viewing especially with it's ability to turn all of my Bluray discs to 4k quality. All ports are 120 hz which gives a smoother picture for baseball's fast action. Great for gaming and I really like the AI feature it offers.

Pros: So much to brag on it speaks for it self. It sends those watts of power directly into my surround sound system.

Cons: The only thing I haven't figured out yet because I haven't had it long enough to completely set it up the way I want. Is every once in a while when turning it on it goes to port 4 as a default.

It's great to have 7 HDMI INs that are all full-function. Performance is fine and does the job. I would say though, documentation is lacking -- the user manual has almost less info than the online dialogs as to what various settings are intended to do, the UI feels dated, and the front panel has a clean esthetic, the display feels like old tech with the backlight display. This AVR though is doing the job I needed for video and audio in my 5.1 system, and unlike former brand AVRs I've owned in the past, provides support for wireless rear surrounds that are necessary in my townhome living room. The RX-A4A is and will hopefully provide me years of great service.

Yamaha RX-A4A would buy again

Clint from Jasper, GA on 3/9/2024

Verified employee review (What's this?)

Sounds great. Setup somewhat difficult for Zone 2. Zone 2 speakers connected to different plugs on rear depending on a 7.1 or 5.1 system. Manual too long to print. Information about Zones is covered in many places in manual. They could have had a section called: Setting up Zone 2 which would have made my life easier. I will echo that the display on this Receiver is too small. Can't read from 10 feet away. There is plenty of room on front for a larger display. The selection knob on right requires reading manual to understand. There is a lot to like about the unit. Haven't set up AM/FM tuner which will rarely be used since we will be using SiriusXM and Pandora. MusicCast easily set up from iPhone 15. Haven't figured out how to stop casting. Prefer they include a printed manual. Speaker set up very easy using the YPAO mic. I would buy again. Spend time reading the manual. Getting Zone 2 level right was tricky. Party mode uses the level set for Zone 2. Again, I feel the manual must be used to fully understand all settings and applications. Lots of wasted space on most pages. If you want a decent two-zone receiver this is a good one. I compared Denon and Yamaha feature for feature. This one came out on top.

Pros: Stylish. Enough power for a living room. MusicCast is great. Plenty of HDMI inputs and outputs. Optical if needed. Each zone supports its own source.

Cons: Display too small. Manual too long and could be better organized by topic. Zone 2 setup is explained but not in one place in manual. No component video if you still need that option. Remote could benefit from a small screen display showing input selected. Of course this would mean different type batteries.

Cons: The glossy face would be easier to care for if it were a matte finish.

I just got it installed yesterday and working on learning some of the set up options. Had an old Onyko mid level receiver before. This is s huge upgrade. The extra wattage really helps my Klipsch RP speakers set up shine. Sound and clarity is way way better! It's part of the reason I bought this machine. Also, the quality from Yamaha. The microphone YPAO set up was easy and it does improve the sound quality for my room. The multiple positions set up option for YPAO for all the seats etc in my living room worked the best for me. Other than learning the extras and set up options the initial set up was as expected and normal. Connected and recognized tv, Play station, 4k player, phone etc. Radio signal and sound output for radio is much better. Was able to get rid of a powered antenna I had to use for the old Onkyo. Went to register it on Yamaha website and they had a free extra 2 year warranty promotion for certain models which this one qualities for so that was a plus too! Would highly recommend.

This unit is another in a long list of remarkable Yamaha receivers that I have owned. In fact, my very first one, purchased in 1987, is still in use, powering my 87 year-old mother's stereo system. Of all of them, however, this is clearly the best. The manual, though on-line, is clear and understandable, and the number of options for system set-up is tremendous. Most of all, the richness of the sound from this receiver is so very satisfying, whether through my front, center, and rear speakers, or when playing CDs through the Pure Direct mode, which sends unaltered sound directly to the front speakers alone. In fact, I have chosen not to even use a subwoofer with my system, given the depth of the bass through my front speakers with this receiver, (and the fact that my wife does not like deep bass). I may not even add the atmos speakers that I had intended to, because I do not want to detract in any way from the way my system sounds now!

Crutchfield delivered a wonderful AVR upgrade at an uncompetitive rate! I went from a Yamaha RX-N600 AVR to this awesome AVENTAGE RX-A4A AVR! It has plenty of plug and play features to bring out the best of your Audio and Video devices. And at the highest digital quality. It's very easy to set up. Operating instructions are as clear as can be. I'm currently running a modest off-brand speaker set-up and it has amplified their capabilities to the fullest! However, I will soon be adding some name brand quality speakers to match the capabilities of the new AVR. Whether you're playing music, watching a movie or gaming? This AVR is definitely going to bring you into audio/ video bliss!!

Pros: Brings the highest digital performance to all your audio and video devices.

Cons: Make sure this unit is the right fit for your audio and video needs. Product size and power performance.

The RX-A4A was quite a step up from our previous tuner-amp of about ten years of age. Like with any other high-end receiver, the RX-A4A upgrading user undergoes an education in the wild wild west of the entertainment industry's unnecessarily complex, competing and incompatible formats. The RX-A4A does a great job of covering every known format, and in addition it adds its own offerings of enhancements and location re-creations. The user has fingertip control of a somewhat bewildering combination of options, which Yamaha engineers have done yeoman service organizing into "scenes" to allow eight presets of inputs aligned with chosen video and audio enhancements each. Sound reproduction is impeccable, and one would swear the picture is somewhat enhanced from older receivers. The 414-page manual is likely impractical to print, with new users learning RX-A4A operation to the point where displaying a PDF manual page eventually becomes unnecessary. Happily we know we can count on tech support when encountering software - hardware conflicts. The only reason it does not get the fifth star is the RXA-4A's IR remote, since streaming services' remotes are wi-fi, and thereby see though walls. An IR repeater is mentioned, but that is not RF or wi-fi, and cannot offer true roaming capabilities.

Pros: "Scenes" for eight presets including sound and picture settings and enhancements

Cons: one-room only IR remote in spite of offering zone 2 for other rooms

Be prepared to spend quite a bit of time on setup

Mixed but mostly positive. I replaced two older Yamaha receivers with this single receiver. Being a techie I was surprised finding myself on a steep learning curve. IMO this unit is not user friendly and requires a great deal of time to setup. The hardware is simple enough, but the software end of things made me want to pull my hair several times. I've setup several whole home and home theaters over the past 30 years and have never had to consult tech support before. And this was after I read the 400+ page owners manual. I've had to make multiple calls. Even then tech support didn't have a solid handle on the unit. Between the "smart" TV turning off my receiver at inopportune times to an owners manual that is thin on what you really need to know. If you want to get the sound just right, be prepared to spend a great deal of time working the settings. POSITIVE For the audiophile the investment in time is worth it. In addition to the new receiver I replaced all home theater speakers and added two so I wound have a hardwired ATMOS system. Admittedly the system sounds fantastic. And the media that takes advantage of true ATMOS? Well it's pretty freakin' cool, adding another dimension/level to the soundtrack and your enjoyment. Joy is a pretty apropos word to finish with.

Traded up from Yamaha TSR-700 to my new RX-A4A. A clear and robust upgrade! Sonic detail, musical performance, superior video clarity and cinematic punch with terrific ATMOS presence, are all present in the A4. Add the significant ability to 'fine tune' the A4 to my particular liking, makes this Yamaha receiver a real treat and completely satisfying!

I am a firm owner of Yamaha products. This is my fourth receiver purchase in 25 years. I am very pleased with the RX-A4A so far. I'm sure it will be in use for a number of years. I recommend Yamaha to everyone I know. As far as Crutchfield goes this is my first dealings with them even though I have known of them for many years. They dropped the ball because I never received the label package that they said I would as a free gift. Not a good way to start a relationship. I may use their services in the future but not sure.

Yamaha home theater fun

I decided to give this Yamaha RX-A4A receiver a whirl and borrowed through our lending program. I have a Yamaha RXA-1010 that's 13 years old and still kickin', and my first stereo receiver was a Yamaha. So yeah, I'm a fan. The RX-A4A offers tons of connections, multi-zone capabilities, and MusicCast streaming on board. I have a 3.1-speaker setup in my living room, and when I connected this receiver as a preamp (yup, you can do that) to my existing multichannel amp, I noticed clean, smooth sound from movies like The Martian, as well as my streaming TV shows like Elementary and Bob's Burgers. I have an older Yamaha WXC-50 that's almost 10 years old, and this receiver linked nicely with my MusicCast ecosystem. I have a Sony Blu-Ray player, an XBox One, Cambridge CXC CD transport, and a TEAC turntable connected, with plenty of connections to spare. They all sound very warm and accurate using the RX-A4A as the hub, just as my retired Yamaha Aventage receiver did in 2010. Highly recommended.

Pros: Lots of connectivity, streaming built-in, Yamaha natural sound

Cons: I'm not sure about the front display readability from a distance. HDMI-CEC volume was tricky using another device's remote

Above Average Quality and Great Power at a Decent Price

Michael from AVON, CO on 8/10/2023

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

I purchased this Yamaha RX-A4A to attach to Focal Aria 906/900 speakers. I historically have bought and used Marantz home theatre receivers for my better living room setups while using entry level Yamaha receivers for secondary setups like in my bedrooms & offices, but when the Upper Mid Tier of the Marantz units moved from ~$1K to ~$1700 I decided to try Yamaha's less expensive and higher powered competing mid-tier product. So, here's the long and short of it. I was temporarily using an old Yamaha RX-V375 with the Focal setup and because that particular receiver was such an outstanding entry level product I did not expect to see much improvement by upgrading it. But I was wrong. The additional power from the RX-A4a made a HUGE difference even with average-efficiency 8 ohm Focal speakers that don't technically require it. The sound was okay before, but the larger amp really made those Focal drivers sing and do so with a lot less effort. I underestimated the importance of being in the middle of a much larger available power band, instead of towards the top end of a smaller envelope. The RX-A4A also has exactly all the basic standard features I expect and want from an amp. I haven't yet played with the couple of more esoteric features it has. I give it 4 out of 5 stars simply because the usability/interface/aesthetics/display are nothing great by todays standards and given this price (neither are the Marantz's for that matter). That's another top

Replaced RX830 ( in great working condition) with RX-A4A. Love the new receiver. New technology in this receiver makes it shine. Can tell a far better sound in DVD's, CD's, and even TV ( such as UTUBE). Unexpected surprise has been dialogue improvement thru my Def. Tech. D5C center. I'm a senior citizen with hearing aids but haven't lost my enjoyment for good music and movies. Hearing aids actually increase the sound and enable me to lower the receiver volume. I don't play stuff very loud but good enough (Too much loud rock music in my younger days!). Now I have a smart tv but not a 4K tv ( yet). I do play some 4K dvd's and the sound separation on some DVD's ( Battleship & Hacksaw Ridge example) are fantastic. Screen on RX-A4A could be larger but I just use remote to display sound field on tv. Remote is top heavy and definitely could be better..but getting used to it. Still a long way to go in learning system. I am using manual individual speaker sound setup on the Yamaha just out of personal preference. Crutchfield is fantastic. Got a great deal on Yamaha RX-A4A. My setup: Yamaha RX-A4A, Def. Tech. D11 frts, Def. Tech.D5C center, Def. Tech. BP1.2X surrounds, Panasonic DP-UN820, SVS micro 3000 sub, and Samsung UN40F6400 ( older tv still going strong).

Absolutely love this receiver, I upgraded from a Yamaha RX V677 and the difference is amazing in power and clarity. I Bi-amp my front speakers as I did with my previous model but the difference in clarity is worth the upgrade. I'm powering Klipsch RP 8000 F fronts bi amped, Klipsch RB 81 II surround rear but dedicated surround front, Klipsch RP 600 C, and 2 Klipsch SPL 120 subs. The surround decoder auto is phenomenal. When I air play from various apps on my phone, I Have no issues with connections and the power is their when I turn the knob!! This is a cool running receiver unlike my old one even though this is bigger and pushing more watts. Set up was simple with self described features as I scrolled through the menu. The YAPO mic sets the sound parameters which is really nice, but I'm the type that likes to fine tune to my listening likes once YAPO gets me in the ballpark for my listening area. Still getting use to the music cast app but for now my adjustments I make I use the remote. Always a Yamaha fan and this receiver doesn't disappoint, while I would of like to have the 150Watts with the A6A, I don't need the extra channels that I wouldn't use for the higher price range.

Pros: The Adventage Series

Hi-End Sound & Build Quality + Excellent Feature Execution

Verified employee review (What's this?)

This is a terrific receiver. Along with MusicCast and built-in Bluetooth, it has worked flawlessly to stream music from my Tidal account, as well as Amazon Music. I use Bluetooth more often as this allows me full access to Tidal and Amazon Music accounts. MusicCast allows you to share your playlists and perform searches within your account, but a lot of the cool features of Tidal are only available when streaming via Bluetooth directly. Sound quality is very, very good. I switched-up my speaker system at the time of purchase, so I am getting a different sound then I had before through my Boston Acoustics. I am now running a 7-channel Dolby Atmos setup with Monitor Audio speakers. I have the smaller Monitor Bronze 50's w/Bronze AMS sitting atop, along with Bronze FX surrounds and Bronze C150 center. Well-matched for sure, but a different sound character than the Boston's. Less bright, but more vocal forward. Not a hard rock music setup; superb for vocals, unplugged instrument reproduction and the Yamaha receiver does not disappoint here. The various soundstage (DSP) modes are terrific, and the Cellar mode is the bomb for bringing forward vocals, string and wind instruments. I prefer the DSP modes over straight front/left speaker. The Monitor speakers are not efficient, and this amp does have to work to get some volume out of them. I highly recommend this Yamaha receiver for its sound quality, build quality and feature execution.

Pros: Connectivity, MusicCast, Bluetooth, Clean Power, DSP modes.

Cons: Might not be the best option for low-efficiency speakers.

Crutchfield kindly accommodated an upgrade from the RX-A2A to the RZ-A4A where HDMI signaling system was failing in the RX-A2A and I'm so glad I did the upgrade! The RX-A2A / RX-A4A replaced a Yamaha RX-A750 purchased in 2015 whose HDMI signals were 'clobbered' by a FL lightning strike. The RX-A4A has similar audio quality to the A750 and similar menu functions that the RX-A2A lacked (& I missed dearly). I wholehearted recommend the RX-A4A over the the RX-A2A - it is definitely worth the extra dollars. One negative is neither new Yamaha unit supports direct USB connectivity to Apple IOS iPod and iPhone - Airplay just doesn't match the sound quality available in a hardwired connection. Yamaha (are you listening?) 'PLEASE restore this lost functionality in a firmware upgrade.' I will gladly go from 4 to 5 stars if you do!

Pros: Excellent audio quality

Cons: No Apple IOS USB connectivity to iPod / iPhone

We purchased a 4k TV and wanted a receiver capable of delivering the 4k to the TV. I went back and forth between Denon and Yamaha settling on the Yamaha for several reasons important to me. It is a quality unit, no disappointment with the looks or design, very satisfied, and am still learning all it has to offer. Even the remote is great-solid. The RX-A4A had everything we needed. It was missing component connections but there are inexpensive adaptors that allow you to connect component to HDMI. We have a couple of old devices (VHS, camcorder) that hardly get used so the adaptor worked fine for these when needed. First purchased this RX-A4A from Amazon but it came in an oversized box all banged up, they did not package it correctly. For a receiver at this price, I didn't even plug it in - I just returned it and bought it again from Crutchfield. My first time with Crutchfield - they are great to work with and the shipping was perfect. For any future expensive electronic gear I need - I will go straight to Crutchfield.

I was initially wanting to buy the Onkyo TX-RZ50 but after waiting for weeks and looking all over without success, I stumbled into this Yamaha Aventage RX-A4A. Read plenty of feedback from owners and read the professional reviews from Crutchfield which mostly were positive. This receiver so far has met all my expectations. I set mine up more for music and home theater use. Listening to my favorite genre of Bar Jazz is satisfying, instrumental sounds came out so natural. I still have to use it for a taxing movie but I have no doubt it will give a stellar service. Glad I bought it when I did as I see that it is now on backorder.

Tried to make the RX-A2A work with my setup, but really wanted the preouts for more than just the Front/Mains on 7.1 setup. After doing more research on the A4A, I found that the A2A is not really on the same level as the 4,6 and 8. Not just power, but in construction and design. To my understanding, (which may be confused, as it took a bit to sort out the details) The physical construction is different, the Sabre DAC and Qualcomm FPGA for DSP, etc. is upgraded, better room correction YPAO, the 5th foot is under the transformer in the front, the remote has a backlight, more DSP modes? and despite only being 10w more in power, it weighs 13 # more. Combined with more HDMI input and outputs, seemed like it made sense to upgrade to the A4A for the significant 3 ~35% price increase. The extra cost was worth it to me, just for the preout, nicer DAC and mire future proofing with the Qualcom FPGA. The backlit remote is a nice touch, and seems necessary on the A2A; disappointed it was not on the A2A. The display on the receiver is unimpressive, but I guess value needs to.be implemented to keep cost down. eARC functions reasonably well on both the A2A and the A4A, but I had issues getting it configured on the A2A, and that required a call to Crutchfield. The solution was to reset the receiver, but was REALLY frustrating troubleshooting and getting it sorted out. It took SEVERAL HOURS to get the receiver configured initally. Went fa

Pros: Yamaha design and quality; construction is well thought put and executed 5 year warranty available Music Cast is a nice app for streaming e.g Spotify and Airplay work well Ability to customize setup and sound

Cons: Cost high, relative to competitors feature set. Setup was fairly unpleasant, and there are some clumsy navigation and setup functions. Be nice if you could eventually use an app on your phone to perform settings that currently need to be set with the your TV on.

Almost perfect AV receiver for blind and low vision users

Chris from Evansville, WI on 1/26/2022

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

The Aventage A2A and the A4A so far are the most accessible AV receivers for blind and low vision users. They feature Music Cast for iPhone based control. They also have a browser based installer setup interface that works well with screen reader software. For the first time with patience and an understanding of receiver features and functions it is possible for a blind user to configure this receiver. The 8 scenes once configured make it simple via the remote control to place the receiver in a mode with inputs and parameters set. From a known starting point it is much easier to use the remote or the IOS app to fine tune your listening. The audio is a matter of preference but I like the presets. The "all channel stereo" is a favorite and makes older recordings sound fresh and room filling. If Yamaha would consult with experts on Apple's VoiceOver and update their application this would be perfect. The only other improvement would be real buttons at least for the Music Cast connect button on the front panel of the unit. No other brand of AV receiver is even in the running when it comes to accessibility.

Pros: IOS application, good remote keypad layout, fantastic audio, good mix of inputs.

Cons: Plastic case, touch controls, usual 45 degree angled feed-points on speaker terminals, accessibility fixes badly needed on IOS Music Cast application.

I've had this receiver for about a week now after returning the Onkyo TX-NR6100 due to it lacking in sound quality. The Yamaha RX-A4A definitely matches the quality I was used to with another Yamaha receiver prior to trying the Onkyo model. This unit was easy to set up and the back-lit function of the remote is helpful when the lights are low. There are a couple video features that are still unavailable until a firmware update is released, but Yamaha has promised that will happen. Hopefully I will get many years of use out of this receiver. Make sure you register the unit with Yamaha as it extends the warranty a couple more years.

I just connected my new RX-A4A and upgrade for my A1050. Everything seems to work great with the exception of my DVR. I have a Xfinity X1 Box that worked great with the 1050 but with the A4A the sound kept muting. It was very intermittent not regular intervals, it would mute (ie not sound) routinely without any reason. I was trying different settings and eventually found that by turning off the adaptive DRC this cured the constant muting and has not done so again? Secondly I have to say I was expecting the web interface to be better but is in fact worse. The settings screen could be more helpful there are several areas where a setting says something like mode 1 mode 2 and mode 3 without any indications what these modes mean? The desktop patterns are lame. The Video picture seems to have improved.

Pros: Better picture

Cons: Lame web interface. Desktop picture. Help could be better

Powerful, state of the art AVR: makes my RP 280f's, RP-450C and R-112SW sound fantastic. I had zero issues with setup or updates. I do get an occasional flicker on screen but I imagine that will be cleaned up with the next update. I'm not into speakers surrounding the room, a simple 5.1 is fine. I bi-amped my LR speakers and they are finally breaking in after 2 weeks, wow. Yes 300 wpc would sound better but I don't want to be deaf and this really sounds great. Yamaha quality is the best... doesn't overheat, great remote, ypao is ok. No offense but I wouldn't trade for a Marantz, Denon or Onkyo.

Pros: High quality, clean digital sound. Simple to setup and this unit has the ability to update for the future

Cons: ONLY 7.1, couldn't at least be 9.1 and with XLR

The receiver is still quite buggy: 1. The TV goes black sometimes when playing Dolby Vision content from my Nvidia Shield. This doesn't happen if I hook the Shield directly to the TV. 2. Once I have gotten no sound out of the receiver. Restarting the receiver did not help. I had to unplug it and plug it back in to fix it. 3. Still lacking 4K 120Hz and VRR support. Web site says "coming soon" but not sure when that is.... If they fix all the bugs, then I'd give the receiver 5 stars. Need to decide if I'm gonna hold on it in hopes they fix it or if I should return it.

It's a little rough. Receiver came with update 1.10. Doesn't seem to be compatible with my Nvidia Shield at the time of this review. Wouldn't playback content that had both Atmos and Dolby vision on my LG Cx or my Shield and sound would cut out every 5 minutes or so. Also Wouldn't update over the Internet so I had to use a USB thumb drive. After updating to version 1.14 and restarting the receiver I was prompted to update to 1.22 after hitting the settings button via the internet. Content now runs fine on my TV but I still have issues running contact on my Nvidia Shield.

All HDMI ins and outs 4k/120 and 8k/60 capable

I noticed the Crutchfield description says that only three of the seven HDMI inputs and one of the three HMDI outputs are 4k/120hz and 8k/60hz capable. After checking with Yamaha customer service, they confirmed via email today that there is a mis-print on the "New Product Bulletin" for the Aventage units which showed only three inputs and one output are 4k/120 and 8k/60 capable. The email states they have received confirmation from Yamaha's Marketing Team that the Yamaha website correctly states for all new Aventage receivers (RX-A4A, RX-A6A, and RX-A8A) that ALL (seven) inputs and ALL (three) outputs will support 4k/120 and 8k/60 (via future upgrade).

Thanks for the catch! We've updated our presentation for the Yamaha RX-A4A to account for this information. All of the HDMI connections should see a firmware update to support 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz sometime in the future.
