Great sound for less!
Dennis from Napa, California on 4/24/2025
Just received the RX-V385, before I start the review I think it's important to mention the equipment used with it. I'm running two sets of front speakers, Paradigm Prestige, and KLH Model 3, turntable is Denon DP 3000NE, cd player is Integra, and the sub is a Definitive. With quality equipment you don't need to spend big on a receiver, the RX-V385 only has 70 watts per, but that is plenty if only using it for music. My music room is 12 x 20, no TV! This receiver replaced a much more expensive Onkyo that crashed after only six years. What is most amazing about this amp is ease of use, really didn't need instructions for setup, bluetooth is great, and the bass is excellent! Good sound is only possible with audio products that enhance your listening experience, and that is what the RX-V385 is doing. This unit won't work for you if you have a large room, but if you want to save some money this rec. is great for rooms my size. Don't think spending more will give you better sound, the equipment will answer that. I spent $500.00 less on this unit and the sound quality is better than with the Onkyo! I gave this 5 stars, this a great receiver and my Crutchfield rep. suggested this receiver over the higher priced unit I mentioned. Thanks Crutchfield for another excellent choice!
Pros: Remote use very simple, bluetooth connects quickly, bass is exceptional, cost factor is great.
Cons: None, this is probably the best deal I ever made on a audio purchase!

Still trying to figure this one out. Seting it up was quick but if you want to do tweeks you will need to go online for the manual. Yamaha definitly could have done a better job making changes to the sound quality. All in all it a good receiver.
Pros: Easy setup using their included mic to progam the receiver to the room dynamics.
Cons: Must use the online manual to understand which button combinations to press to setup which option to program. Not as easy as my last multimedia reciever from 20 years ago.

Very nice unit, especially for the price. Satisfies all my needs. Although I did find it a bit tricky setting up. Had to call Crutchfield twice for help. There are a lot of options and a variety of settings that are nice, but not really necessary. Overall, a good buy.
Pros: Quality Versatility Sound Price
Cons: Set up can be tricky Complete Instructions down load only Needs a second optical connection

This unit provided a good solution for my requirements i.e. low cost, good sound quality, Blue Tooth and easy set-up.
Pros: This Yamaha is a low cost but full featured receiver. It has all the capabilities that I needed (in particular Blue Tooth and Surround Sound) along with the Yamaha reputation for quality. The most important attributes for me were the ease of set-up and obvious operation.
Cons: I really have found no issues.

Easy set-up / Sounds & functions great!
Michael from Corona, CA on 2/12/2025
Bought this A/V receiver to replace a late 90's Sony 5:1 system. What a difference, wish I would have done this sooner. Easy set-up, and by using the ARC HDMI cable to the TV, all the controllers and TV linked up without any additional programming. Then calibrating the speakers for the room is simple using the external mic that comes with the system (no issues with the existing sub , works perfectly). Highly recommend!

Hard to imagine a better deal at this price. It's driving Polk P60 towers with power to spare. Give it a clean source and it sounds great. Mp3s sound pretty good on wifi stream, or direct hdmi. Bluetooth from my phone is meh. An actual cd or dvd sounds greater than you will believe, especially dialed in with the eq.

Yamaha RX-V385
Marcus from Marysville, WA on 10/14/2024
Big disappointment. The subwoofer doesn't seem to be getting a signal from the receiver, so I have no bass coming out of it. The tuner doesn't work, so I can't listen to the radio. I will be sending this back. This is the second time I've purchased a Yamaha receiver that didn't work. The owner's manual doesn't cover everything, so there are inputs/outputs whose functions are not explained. The few installation instructions that it has, are vague.
Pros: None that I can see.
Cons: No signal to the subwoofer. Tuner doesn't work. No audio connection to the TV that accommodates standard cables.

Brad from Arroyo Grande, CA on 6/26/2024
Need a receiver to drive two Klipsch R-600F speakers for my son's apartment and wanted to be able to upgrade to 5.1 surround sound at a later date. This receiver was recommended by Crutchfield as a good choice and we are very happy with it. Plenty of power to drive the Klipsch speakers. Pretty easy setup except that we were challenged for find the setting initially that enables the ARC HDMI from the TCL Roku TV. Quick start guide included in the box doesn't have that type of detail. Full manual is online. Favorite features are the ability to save setup for most used viewing/listening inputs and that inputs auto change when you turn on a connected component. Blue tooth streaming connects easy and sounds very good.
Pros: Not too large to fit in smaller component space Easy blue tooth connection Remote layout is pretty intuitive Auto change to component input feature
Cons: Remote is not backlit

Shoddy Garbage
Lester from MEMPHIS, TN on 4/18/2024
Piece of junk didn't even last a year. Wish I could give zero stars. This lack of quality isn't unique to Yamaha. This is my second Yamaha unit to die within the last three years. Before that...Marantz, Harmon Kardon, Denon...all of them zeroed out within 2-3 years. Blu-ray players routinely fail within 9-12 months. Most modern electronics are completely disposable GARBAGE. NOT RECOMMENDED; nor any of the aforementioned brands. Will have to start my own company to build something that doesn't have a planned obsolescence of mere months. DISGUSTING AND SHOULD BE A CRIMINAL OFFENSE TO SELL THIS WORTHLESS CRAP.
Pros: It looked nice when it came out of the box
Cons: Build quality is nonexistent

David from Castle Rock, CO on 3/1/2024
Nice receiver. Cost-effective, and the best and most needed part for me was something that was shallower (less depth) than the others on the market by more than an inch. It allowed for the goal of being in a living room cabinet and having enough depth to close the door! The door has slats in it so it allowed for the IR remote to still work too.
Pros: Shallower by 1" - 2" over the others in the market.
Cons: Not a 7 + 1 for 2 to be going to the outside back patio speakers directly. Not that big a deal as I can just open the sliding doors and hear the music from the inside.

Terrific Unit, But . . .
Edward from Chapel Hill, NC on 11/3/2023
I love this receiver and the live Crutchfield tech support I received while setting it up. Except for one thing: I've been unable to adjust the volume in my Beats Studio 3 noise-cancelling headset when receiving bluetooth input from the RX-V385 in TRANSMITTER mode. Have scoured the Beats website and had several chat sessions with Yamaha tech support, but with no success. I'm left with the conclusion that there must be a compatibility issue between the RX-V385 and the Beats Studio 3 heaphones that prevents volume adjustment through either the headset or the receiver. Very disappointing, as the bluetooth transmitter function was a primary reason for purchasing this recevier.
Pros: Great product for the price. Compact size. Wonderful sound.
Cons: Unable to adjust headset volume when receiving bluetooth input from the RX-V385 in TRANSMITTER mode.

Good value
Michael from Boise, ID on 10/31/2023
It's a good price with the discount. I wanted the cheapest 5.1 receiver to replace an obsolete Denon with no HDMI. The setup was was poorly described in the "quick" setup manual that was included, and wasn't much better in the online manual. The speaker calibration was fairly easy, displayed verbally (not graphically) on the TV, but I had to go online to decipher the on-screen error codes (why not simply describe the errors on the screen, as Denon does, instead of coding them?!). The errors turned out to be two speakers being out of phase, which I easily fixed, and a negligible and unspecified "imbalance" between the multiple brands of speakers (JBL subwoofer and JBL front left and right, Def Tech center, Jamo rear), which could not be fixed short of buying new speakers of one brand, I guess. But the really annoying setup hurdle was that I couldn't get any sound from the TV to pass to the receiver via the HDMI cable. There was no solution in the "Trouble-Shooting" list, so I finally called Crutchfield tech support. They fixed the problem in under 10 minutes after walking me through the procedure to "enable" the HDMI input on the receiver. (Really, Yamaha? You can detect tonal, phase and spacial imbalances between speakers but can't automatically detect and enable an HDMI ARC connection from the TV?). Oh well, all's well that ends well. The FM reception is strong and the surround modes sound great. Ultimately, once again, I'm a satisfied customer.
Pros: Bang for the buck.
Cons: Cumbersome setup error resolution.

I ordered this to replace my Yamaha RS-202 stereo receiver, so I could have a dedicated subwoofer output, and an internal digital audio converter to listen to TV audio. I had an external digital audio converter hooked up to the other one, but I had to have the volume way up in order to hear TV audio. This thing rocks! On paper it's 30 watts per channel less than the other one, but is much louder. The tuner is stronger too. Plus, I can bi-amp my speakers if I decide to. There's also a lot more audio adjustments. Challeging
John from Loveland, CO on 3/25/2023
The set up was challenging. The wire connector are tricky, not as easy as RCA jacks or push down. Thy go in from the side and not into the hole in front. The manual is 24 pages long with no information on setting volumes, etc. Did find a manual online over 112 pages long, but was reluctant to download it. So it is now challenging to figure out if speakers can be adjusted, i.e. loaded in front, softer in back. Did not know that you must hoke it up to a smart TV, where commands, etc are displayed. The first day I worked on setting it up for over 4 hours. The wire hookups were the biggest challenge. Once I figured that out it was a little easier. The wire connections are close together, making it tight to hook up speakers. I basically wanted a receiver that I could listen to music off of a USB. This unit appears to do much more than that. The second day I spend getting everything into our electronics cabinet. Unplugging wires, re-plugging etc. Again ran into difficulties. Through all of this the one savior was Crutchfield. I spend considerable amount of time on the phone with reps. The customer service was exceptional. The rep stayed on the phone and in no way rushed me. Cannot say enough about all the reps I will say this, it was easy to get a real person, a person who spoke good English and was located in the US. Every employee was knowledgeable and did not have to put me on hold to get answers to my questions. They were professional and knowledgeable. Thanks Crutchfield.
Pros: Glad it was purchased through Crutchfield
Cons: Wire connectors tight together hard to insert each wire. Complex setup must have TV

Yamaha quality even at the cheap end
Andrew from PALMETTO, FL on 3/6/2023
Wanted a cheap receiver to use as a 2 channel set up in the bedroom with some bookshelves rather than getting a soundbar. It has enough features to make me and the Mrs happy at a totally fair price (especially when on sale).
Pros: ARC works seamlessly. Even more consistently than my way WAY more expensive Aventage receiver in the living room I drive some not very sensitive Polk R100's with this and it does the job admirably.
Cons: I connected my phone via Bluetooth, and if you're like us and watch tv with the "sleep timer" on, what it was doing was when the TV shut off, the receiver would switch to Bluetooth and stay on. The loud relay CLICK when the system turns on and off is somewhat off putting especially in a bedroom scenario like we have. My aventage does this too so I'm not sure if this is a "Yamaha thing" or if I'd get this with all brands.

Shop Crutchfield
Crutchfield customer from Woodbridge, VA on 10/6/2022
I have a basic 5.1 sound system. I wanted a simple AV receiver that was meant to play those channels and have Bluetooth. I've had better receivers, but this was what I wanted. I returned one that I thought was defective. My bad! It was probably fine. I now think I had the wires hooked up wrong. Crutchfield accepted my return, no questions asked. I also got the Bose Quiet Comfort II ear buds. They are THE best! If you plan to buy any electronics for your home or auto, take my advice and buy it from Crutchfield. They are, hands-down, the best!

Pros: Decent power, nice features.

Looking for a solid entry level Home Theater Receiver?
John from Hubbardston, MA on 2/3/2022
WOW! This is a very nice entry level Home Theater Receiver. Packed with advanced features not normally found at this level. Solid piece of technology, well built. Only missing two very small (picky) features, 1. Mute should stay muted when volume is being decreased and not unmute until volume is increased or Mute button is hit again. 2. The analog AV inputs are not converted to the HDMI output, I had to buy an external AV to HDMI converter and plug it in to one of the HDMI inputs. So glad I bought this from Crutchfield, they shrink wrapped the shipping box in opaque blue plastic to hide the contents from porch pirates and to keep the equipment safe from wet weather, two major concerns. Top notch outfit, every time I buy from them I'm more impressed.

Perfect upgrade to achieve full 4K
Margaret from Streamwood, IL on 2/3/2022
Oh my! The sound on a true 4K receiver is amazing. It was weird at first, but the dialog is more focused on the center channel (ie clearer). The smallest sounds, like the pluck of a double bass, is clearer. I'm looking forward to trying the bluetooth for streaming music next. I'm sure I've just scratched the surface, but worth the upgrade from my previous Yamaha.
Pros: Controls almost identical to my previous Yamaha, making the learning curve small. Dramatic improvement in sound over 4K 'passthru' receiver I had before.
Cons: Setup was a little tricky, since I was expecting to just connect all the components exactly like my previous Yamaha, but figured it out.

Great receiver for home theater
Roger from PLATTSBURGH, NY on 11/11/2021
I have a 12' x 20' living room with the TV at the end of this rectangle with a 5-speaker setup. This receiver is perfect for a small setting although I'm sure it can handle more. I absolutely love it. It has many acoustic settings for any type of viewing or just plain music listening - there is even a mono setting. They thought of everything. There are so many well thought out features too numerous to mention. Two that are my favorite concern volume. There is a starting volume setting and there is a maximum volume setting. Both are something I just love. The bluetooth offers an auto-on feature. I just fire up the iPad and click connect and on it comes. I highly recommend this receiver.

This model does what I wanted. It's a simple receiver to take inputs from various sources send them to a tv and provide sound to bookshelf speakers and a sub. Using this in my home office for cable TV and for my personal PC while occasionally using the FM tuner or Bluetooth capabilities. Has plenty of power for the Klipsch bookshelf speakers used and also sends 4K to the TV. It is all I needed for the office since not utilizing surround. Have used Yamaha receivers since the 90's and have Aventage series for the media room, this unit works perfectly for what I wanted in the office. Signal Path from PC running Tidal HiFi (exclusive control of JRiver) to JRiver Media Center (exclusive control of Yamaha) to Nvidia graphics card with digital sound to Yamaha receiver

Perfect upgrade from out-dated equipment
Crutchfield customer from Saint Paul, MN on 9/9/2021
With times and technology constantly changing, it can be very expensive to keep upgrading your equipment. This receiver allows you to do so, without breaking the bank. It has most of the features anyone would want or expect (except Atmos), and several features that people replacing outdated equipment didn't even know they needed. I've been a fan of Yamaha receivers for over 20 years, and although this model is relatively entry level, it does not disappoint.

For the $$, it does everything I want it to do and set up is very easy and intuitive. The sound is impressive for the $$. Wow! Was I suprized...
Crutchfield customer from Madison, MS on 8/9/2021
I am moving over from a ten year old Sony receiver that had conked out on me. I never was too happy with it and the DD separation never seemed that good to me. I bought this Yamaha as a cheap receiver to get me by until there are more HDMI 2.1 receivers on the market to match up with my XBOX Series X. I'll say this...this receiver packs a big punch! It drives my 15" Polk Audio sub just great, the DD separation to all speakers on my 5.1 setup is wonderful and my Polk Audio center channel never sounded more crisp on the dialogue. I was very surprised at just how good this receiver is. If it had 2.1 HDMI inputs I would keep it for a good while. Very nice and very happy with it. I give it a big thumbs up, seriously.
Pros: Crisp sound from the center channel. Thumps my big powered sub just fine and had great Dolby separation. Easy to set up and operate too.
Cons: No HDMI 2.1 but then that is a very new feature just now starting to show up in receivers.

Low Quality Receiver, defective
Customer from Manchester, NH on 7/26/2021
After six months of use, the hdmi ports on back of unit stopped working. TV sound would cut out for 2 seconds at a time, every 10 to 20 seconds, negating anything that was said on the tv program. When disconnected from TV, the tv speaker would work just fine. Same with the DVD player. Cannot play a DVD, yet when DVD player is connected to tv directly, it works just fine. It worked for about 3 months. At first we thought it might be the tv, but it is not. Then we thought it could be the brand new Bluray player, but it is not. The hdmi ports on the back of this brand new unit are defective. Unacceptable.
Pros: Good price
Cons: Defective hdmi ports complicated than most to set up

I wish it supported older input standards
Crutchfield customer from Anaheim, CA on 7/22/2021
I wish it supported older input standards. I bought it to replace a 20-years old Yamaha receiver (can't remember the model number), but my 20-year old subwoofer is still great, however the coax cable connection is no longer supported. Out of the box, I couldn't fully connect the entire system. And yes, some of us still have older components with S-Video. These things shouldn't increase the mass production costs by more than a few bucks, but would really simplify system upgrades/updates - who can afford to replace the entire system every few years? However, I'm very happy with this product at this price point.

Have had this receiver for close to three months, and am very happy with it. Some other reviews noted the receiver did not seem to deliver adequate power, but I think the power is just fine. The controls increase the volume very gradually (a good thing!) which may lead someone to mistakenly think the power is subpar. One feature I really like is you can press one button on the remote to immediately turn on any source (tv, radio, cd or dvd), rather than having to turn on the receiver and then hitting a second button to select the source.
Pros: You get a hard copy initial set-up guide.
Cons: The owners manual is about 100 pages on-line.

I needed to replace a 25+ year old SONY 5.1 surround sound receiver and needed to connect an analog turntable. This unit seemed to fit my needs at a reasonable price and had enough plugs to add the turntable, etc. Once I had it hooked up to all of my hardware correctly (Blu-ray player, CD player, flat screen TV, satellite receiver and turntable) I was a bit disappointed at first. I'm used to knobs to adjust treble, bass, balance, etc. This unit had none of that on the unit. It became a matter of pressing the various buttons on the remote and "walla", things began to make sense. All of the aforementioned controls were accessed via the remote....(DUH!) It took five days for me to figure out what was what...bass, treble, balance, tuning each speaker, etc. The instructions provided by Yamaha are a joke...they show you how to plug whatever stuff you have in but nothing about the other vital information...a hint might have been helpful. But I persevered, I guess Yamaha figures everyone knows how to operate this new age electronic stuff from the get go...NOT. In any event, through trial and error, some prior knowledge and having nothing better to do, I got the surround sound receiver to where it sounds absolutely and incredibly to my liking. I suppose I could have called Crutchfield for technical assistance, but I'm an old school guy and that's like asking for directions or reading the instructions. Not in my lifetime...

An excellent Receiver
Crutchfield customer from Wyoming, NY on 4/13/2021
A very nice piece of audio equipment. The receiver was easy to hook up, and is quite easy to operate. I like the ability of balancing the volumes of the speakers with the included microphone - it worked very well. Overall, the sound quality is also excellent, although voices sometimes sound a bit muffled with a little too much bass frequency in them. I would have liked to have some control over the tonal quality, especially the high end frequencies. There is a bass boast, but it already produces good bass. Overall, it is a fine receiver.

BAD Design for HDMI ARC
Crutchfield customer from Stockton, CA on 4/5/2021
HDMI ARC inputs continuously causes your inputs to randomly auto switch while you are listening to the receiver. For instance you are listening to music via CD on HDMI Input 1 and the receiver will randomly switch to another input on its own while your CD is still running. This causes you to have to manually switch the input back and wait for it to happen again! I called Crutchfield and spoke with Dee. I am awaiting an optical cord to discontinue to use the ARC HDMI that is running from the TV. This is a horrible function and I never had this issue with Denon. Unsure if I will be keeping this receiver. I have 60 days to watch and learn.
Pros: Sounds good
Cons: Inputs randomly switch through the ARC HDMI setup

A person from USA on 2/21/2021
I got this to replace a 20 year old Kenwood THX Select receiver that recently died on me. Besides my Kenwood not doing HDMI, I was completely content with it for sound. But wow, this Yamaha was a huge leap into the future for me, it does absolutely everything I throw at it. I have a bluray player, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and my PC hooked to it. I've also tested the bluetooth from an iPhone. Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA pipe perfectly. The remote is simple and fantastic, it also controls your other devices via HDMI link which was a surprise to me, it's pretty cool. This Yamaha also weighs less and puts out less heat than my old amp. The only thing it can't do is take video from a couple of my Component/S-Video sources, but not a huge deal. I've had a Yamaha YST subwoofer that I've used for a long time and still works perfectly, so I knew they put out a quality product. Hopefully this lasts the next 20 years!
Pros: Elegant, strong sound, easy setup, support for almost everything, price, and build
Cons: No legacy video connections besides composite video, no wifi, no analog stereo out/room B speakers, no optical/coax digital sound out

Very happy with this budget friendly unit. I replaced my Denon AVR-X1000 that wasn't playing well with my Sony XBR-65X900F TV when using HDMI ARC. Plus my old Denon wasn't 4K capable. This RX-V385 sounds good and has plenty of power (70W per channel) to run my 2 front Definitive speakers and Definitive center channel for 12x14 room. All of my home audio is powered by Yamaha now...they do not disappoint!
Pros: - Price - Features - Speaker terminal posts instead of spring clips found on other budget/entry-level receivers

Loving it! Stream from my phone, plug in my USB, listen to FM and AM radio stations. All of those work great when others failed miserably (same location and others had trouble with radio stations tuning in and out after a minute or two). Display shows titles (USB), draws little power when off and rocks out the tunes when on!

Decent, no frills AVR. Bought for TV room. I needed HDMI inputs to get 5.1 through my Roku. My only complaint are all of the DSP options, which sound terrible. "movie" "sci"fi' etc. Yes they can be disabled, but it's not super intuitive. That said, this is replacing a very similar Yamaha I have had for 20 years, which still going strong. A phono preamp would have been nice as well. But for the $, a good buy. PS. The free labels Crutchfield supplied were helpful. Much better than masking tape and a sharpie for labeling wires!

Crutchfield customer from Emory, TX on 10/22/2020
Rated best of the best. I disagree. Install was a nightmare. Instructions and trouble shooting guide didn't address any of my issues. Hunt and peck solutions over 12 hours. Works now. Seems to be underpowered. Must pump volume to 50 just be able to hear voices on tv. Unit for bedroom so not a returnable issue. Would not recommend in large space, such as living room or media room. Would not recommend to a friend. You get what you pay for. Crutchfield got the unit to me without any issues and very quickly. Pleased with that.
Pros: It works.
Cons: Not very powerful.

Recently we decided upgrade our stereo receiver so we could take advantage of bluetooth technology for our listening enjoyment. The Yamaha RX-V385 provides all of the benefits of a surround sound system receiver and bluetooth listening. The installation / connections to our 4k ultra high definition widescreen tv was super simple as were connections to our 5.1 surround sound system. The control fob is super simple to use so there are no inter-face issues with connected components. If you are considering a receiver upgrade, or replacement, consider the Yahama RX-V385. Like the service and pricing found with Crutchfield you won't be disappointed.

For the price point this receiver is at it is hard to beat. Bought for a friend to use at his pool with some cheap tower speakers and no sub. I set the speakers to large and the sound was way better than expected. Nice bass Response and the Bluetooth worked flawlessly as well. Only thing I could knock it for was that the USB port in the front would not play music from an iPhone, the manual says it's to play music from a USB drive.
Pros: Price Sound quality Features
Cons: Front USB would not play music from a phone, apparently this is to play music from a USB drive.

Great entry level system
Crutchfield customer from Trenton, NJ on 7/9/2020
It's my first time putting a surround sound system together and I was pretty nervous about it all. The shipping time was fast and the receiver was packaged really well. I used a Dayton C452-Air for my center, Dayton B652-Airs for my front and surround speakers, and a Dayton 1000 for my subwoofer (I live on the second floor of a small apartment so don't need too much power). Hooking everything up according to the included instructions was very simple, and YPAO mic gave me an added level of comfort regarding my speaker placement. There are a ton of features I'm still toying around with - for example, I really like I can adjust the settings to ignore the inputs I don't use (e.g. AUX, FM, AM, etc.). My only concern going forward is that I can't expand to a 7.1 setup. I was nervous about this not being compatible with Alexa, but it's not an issue since I also got a Logitech Harmony Hub. Regardless, I knew those points as I ordered this, and for the price, I feel like this is a great entry-level system. Bonus - the included labels for the cables are a nice touch and will definitely help as I'm upgrading components of my entertainment center.
Pros: Great price, easy setup, YPAO microphone included to calibrate the speakers
Cons: Limited to 5.1

I've only had this about two weeks, and it's proving to be a very capable receiver. I'm still in the learning process, as this is a very versatile unit packed with loads of features, for a great price. I mainly purchased this to replace an old unit in my work space, that lacked Bluetooth. I'm currently using it as a two channel, but I have the capability now to expand its use. It apparently is well built, as the UPS driver dropped it over my fence, and it was up and running out of the box. Thanks to Crutchfield for another happy transaction.
Pros: Feature packed at a great price.

Nice entry level modern multichannel AV receiver on a budget
Roger from CAMBRIDGE, OH on 5/14/2020
I was using an old Pioneer VSX-D411 receiver manufactured in 2002, when I decided it was time for a badly needed update in my setup. I knew I was getting additional features such as HDMI switching, Bluetooth and automatic speaker level setting but I had no idea how much this unit would improve Dolby Prologic II decoding. Two channel sources from my over the air tv channels now sound like Dolby Digital 5.1. The difference is astonishing to me. I hoped there would be some improvement, but its so obvious that it is breathtaking. Since most of my stations are stereo, this is really taking my television viewing up a notch. DVDs and Blurays sound so much better also. This receiver is great value for the money, especially if you are on a budget as I am. I had some difficulty with my Sony Bluray player working with the unit, but discovered the solution on my own. Its reassuring to know I could've called Crutchfield if necessary. I'm subtracting 1 star since the HDMI sockets are alarmingly loose but functional.
Pros: Great Dolby Prologic II decoding, good overall sound, optional bi-amp capability for front speakers
Cons: Weak/wobbly HDMI sockets, few analog inputs, no A/B speaker switch, confusing status indicators for Dolby/DTS decoding

See Below for comments.
Pros: Much better sound and presence than my Onkyo. Great buy for the money. Love the different "sound stages" you can set to. From a symphony hall to a disco type venue.
Cons: -Binding posts for the speakers are very close together after a few line are connected very difficult to get the rest in and tightened. best to use bananna plugs. -Should be some comment and instructions for syncing tv remote to control receiver and other inputs. Operators manual does not come with receiver. Just a quick set up guide. You can download it, however, its a lot easier to have it in print rather than having an I Pad and have to scroll to different sections.

YAMAHA RX-V385 - A Good Upgrade For Me
Crutchfield customer from Page, AZ on 5/5/2020
UpGraded my 20 year old Yamaha Home Theater Receiver (By the way I purchased it from Crutchfield) - there was nothing wrong with it - just needed to have more features - like HDMI - Bluetooth devices - Set up was easy - with the on screen (when connected to an HDMI monitor) - In the old Days - Receivers had knobs to adjust all the output levels to the speakers - now you plug in a supplied mic and set in a place where you most listen to the cool sounds - and it does it for you - So Ok it's technology and New - for lazy ass people . . To me the old ways were good - new is ok. Simple is Better without having to navigate onscreen menus to adjust the speaker levels. If you have kids that's what their lazy asses are for - to adjust the knobs on the receiver while you sit in your easy chair - no batteries required - ya just have to feed them. . . ( you'll finally get them to do some real work ). Been doing business with Crutchfield for over 25 years now - Good People - Good Service - Oh . . by the way thanks for fast 2-3 day shipping. . Been enjoying most excellent sound quality during the lockdown. Thanks Bill and Thanks to all your Staff - Ya'll take care - we will all make it through this difficult time.
Pros: The Sound Quality is most excellent with new the speakers purchased 6 months earlier from Crutchfield, for the 20 + year old Yamaha Receiver i currently have - Only upgraded to get new features - HDMI and Bluetooth.
Cons: It's not really a Con - But to access new features - you really have to review the operating manual to find out where to make the adjustments - In the old days - there was only Bass - Treble - Midrange and Volume . . and sort out a few - 5.1 features - in this case change is Good . . ?

While this receiver does not have all of the "bells & whistles"of higher priced units, it performs well, producing clear, pleasant sound as a replacement for the standard TV fare. The Bluetooth and USB feeds provide nice alternatives for the usual broadcast radio programming.
Pros: Decent sound quality, ease of use and aforementioned input options.
Cons: Only drawback is lack of input posts for alternate (pair B) speakers.

Great Buy
Crutchfield customer from Ohio on 4/21/2020
Great receiver for the money. I was a little concerned about the 70 watts per channel. I just purchased my first 4K TV and my older Nakamichi receiver did not have HDMI ports which I needed for the TV my old receiver was 100 watch per channel. I am in shock how great this receiver sounds for the price I am just using two floor standing Wharfdale speakers that are quite large and heavy, And this Yamaha will rock the walls in my house with crystal clear sound wether it's on TV , CD or the tuner. And a special shout out to Dale in tech-support I had a couple issues he solved them quickly and was quite impressed by him. I have been buying stereo equipment for over 35 years and for the money you cannot beat this Yamaha hands down. Thanks Crutchfield.
Pros: Easy to set up. Crystal clear audio More than enough power to power large speakers It sounds like a $700 receiver

I took delivery of the receiver about 2 weeks ago. It came from Crutchfield on time and in perfect condition. I am very pleased with the ease of getting my input & output sources hooked up & working. The biggest challenge that I had was figuring out how to make it work with my Logitech Harmony remote since there are not dedicated buttons to select inputs to the receiver. But, the receiver remote allows the colored buttons to be used for selecting inputs. So, that allowed me to program the Harmony remote to make it work perfectly. I'm very pleased with my purchase.

Another reason I use and recomend Crutchfield
Crutchfield customer from Medford, OR on 2/3/2020
In the late 70's at my job in a stereo shop with a focus on car audio called the Tahoe Sound Wave, I first learned of Crutchfield Elecronics. At that time, as a mail order source, Crutchfield sent catalogs and I updated my address to make sure I would get the latest on new car audio head units , speakers etc. As I moved on repairing audio gear, a Crutchfield catalog was first read for any new system choices to recommend as people wanted better sounding systems with "boosters", speakers and equalizers. Whenever asked where to get car or home equipment after my time in audio, I always sent friends and family to Crutchfield as the best source for a good price, good product and full confidence customer service for the purchase through ownership of what they needed. I never hedge saying "they worked for me" hoping that was true. It's always been true and this receiver is another example.
Pros: Easy setup, great sound, no surprises.

The Yamaha RX-V385 was a Christmas gift to myself. My main interest was to get a receiver that was easy to attach by Bluetooth. I found my older Onkyo would rarely connect so I had to drape a wire from my pad across the room to listen to my music. Now I turn the receiver on, set the pad across the room and immediately it is connected. It powers a 20 year old set of Bose Accoustimass speakers nicely. I listen mostly to good country, pipe organ and classical music. Crutchfield is the place to purchase your equipment. They are truly knowledgeable and far more helpful in the selection process as well as the installation. Their pricing is also either lower or in line with the major suppliers. 5 stars!!!

Slam Dunk
Crutchfield customer from Richmond, VA on 9/2/2019
I had the older model of this receiver. I really liked it, but I wanted one with a Bluetooth feature. I had my speakers already set up (5:1). I was looking for a good, but inexpensive choice. This model and decision was a slam dunk. Also, Crutchfield's website is chocked full of insightful info and makes researching really easy.
Pros: Cost, reliability, Bluetooth, fast delivery
Cons: None

Good sound, great price
Crutchfield customer from Cuyahoga Falls, OH on 7/28/2019
This receiver provides good sound at a great price. Set up was straightforward and I used banana plugs to connect my NHT speakers. I'm using optical digital sound input from my smart TV as the 385 does not have a network Jack. But I'm very happy with the sound reproduction in my 5.1 setup. My only complaint is the YPAO did not work for me, probably due to my room configuration. But setting the sound field manually was straightforward and fun.
Pros: Good sound, straightforward setup.
Cons: No network jack

Bought this to replace our beloved HK receiver, which was struggling to keep up with limited inputs, transitioning from analog to digital via unreliable adapters, and pairing with Bluetooth adapters. Everyone in customer service was helpful with our need to match our Klipsch speakers electronically to this receiver as an alternative. Great sound, but took some effort to tweak the sub woofer. Also a bit disappointed in the tendency for the receiver to prioritize Bluetooth as a source. If our paired PC's Bluetooth is on, the moment we log on, the receiver will switch from whatever source is currently in use. Only solution seems to be what was recommended by customer service, which is to turn off Bluetooth on the PC when not playing music from there. Not a big deal, but takes some getting used to. Experienced some speaker cutout during setup when using the physical volume control on the front of the unit, but this isn't an issue since we used it only during initial setup, and remote control is now used exclusively.
Pros: Sound.
Cons: Challenging setup, Bluetooth priority interrupting other source selections, equalizing commercial sound levels to program levels.

Excellence is often overused but in the case of this receiver is appropriate. Good power for small to medium sized rooms with the ability to adjust each aspect of the system to personal wants. This is especially true if using a center speaker for dialogue. By looking at the manual available for download, you can set the dialogue exactly to your own needs. Overall a great receiver for the cost.

I bought the V385 back in November 2018 and I've been pleased since set-up! Easy to do, just had issues with the space to be located, but that was an easy fix. I first compared the RX-385 against the RX-V485 to make a final decision. The V485 comes with Apple AirPlay & is Alexa-compatible. So what! Not big on that anyway. I've listened to it for 4 months now and it does what I want and need in an A/V receiver. I previously had a Yamaha A/V Home Theater Receiver, so that's why I came back to purchase another. Also, in the comparison between the V385 and the V485, just about the same but the V385 is almost $100 cheaper. Compare, shop and save! Thanks, Crutchfield!
Pros: Easy to set-up and operate. Price and quality. I have it set up in my master bedroom and mainly use the 5.1 mode and it sounds great! My FM comes in clear, I really don't listen to AM to much but that's clear as well. May purchase something similar in the near future to fill another room.
Cons: Came with a Quick Start Guide but no Owners Manuel. I downloaded it.

Great entry level receiver, especially for parents/grandparents tv room setup, with the added benefit of being near term future proof when the tv gets upgraded to 4k. Manual is 100+ pages (pdf from Yamaha's website) so be prepared for some 'light' reading if you haven't used or setup an a/v receiver in some time.

I have always used Yamaha for my sound reinfocfement. None of the units I own have ever failed and they perform well with ease of use and setup. This product does an excellent job powering a Bose 5.1 Acoustimass 10 Series speaker array. Other Yamaha receivers I own do a nice job of powering my independent systems of Klipsch theater 7.2 and stereo Bose 301s.
Pros: Reliability and ease of use. Clear and clean power. Lots of customizable settings to suit your personal tastes.

Good sound for the price
Fed Man from Fowlerville, MI on 11/7/2018
I normally buy Denon, but Denon has left people that still need AV jacks behind. I bought this to power (4) CP-6 Klipsch speakers for an outdoor kitchen and hook my XM docking station to it. I love the sound for what it is for but the one thing I don't like is this is not a standalone, you will need a TV or monitor with a HDMI jack to set up the speakers and EQ. You must have it when using the microphone to set up the receiver or the sound is not that good and you do not have balance control or in depth sound control without it. After set up was complete I was happy with it.
Pros: It has AV input jacks
Cons: You will need a TV or monitor with a HDMI jack to set up the speakers, EQ and balance control

I've only been using this amp/receiver for a couple of weeks but so far I'm pretty happy with it. It sounds great and is a solid piece of equipment. I wish it had a little more variety in the input/output department but I guess that's not to be expected from an amp in this price range, especially these days. I could have used a couple more analog options for some old video game consoles. I made it work, though, and for the price I don't think I could have done much better than this Yamaha.
Pros: Great sound, sturdy, plenty of audio configuration options, great price.
Cons: Limited ins/outs, especially for analog signals. No mid-range adjustment in the general tone control.

It's a Yamaha, what else do you need to know?
Dave from Galesburg, IL on 10/3/2018
I recently upgraded to 4K and I wanted a receiver that would pass 4K signals through to my television. I have owned Yamaha products for years and have been extremely happy with the brand. Considering the fact that this unit was on the lower range of their price scale, I thought it would be relatively uncomplicated for a 73-year-old dinosaur like me to use. Boy, was I mistaken! The unit comes with a simple start-up guide, only one-third of which is in English. If you want the full owner's manual (all 112 pages of it), you have to go online to get it. I guess Yamaha is doing its part to save our forests. Anyway, there are so many menus and settings for this unit that I'll bet not even a Yamaha engineer can tell you what each one does. Using the "by guess and by golly" method, I managed to get it to a place where it works well enough and I decided not to press my luck any farther. A call to Crutchfield support helped with some of the settings, the rest were just happy accidents. Sometimes I think I should have just invested in a good sound bar, plugged my devices directly into the TV, and been satisfied with that. However, I already had the speakers and wanted to continue to use them. So, if you fancy yourself a tech junkie who likes to experiment with various settings and tweaking to get just the right sound, this is the unit for you!
Pros: Good brand, great price.
Cons: Overly complicated, too many setting choices for someone who just wants a basic receiver.

Great receiver! Plenty of power on hand and I can crank the volume with no distortion. Paired with a pair of Klipsch R-15M book shelf speakers and a Franklin Audio 12" Powered sub(same as the Dayton Audio, just rebadged). The manual that comes with this receiver is only about a 10 page booklet. You really need to download the manual form this site. The manual is like 130+ pages. Reason being, there are soo many hidden features that you can only access with the remote. Thought my speakers didn't live up to the branded hype until I found the eq, crossover, volume adjustment, etc thru the remote. To sum it up, I am very satisfied with this receiver.

Great product as long as you do not have another Yamaha receiver, if so, the remotes on both will work on both. Great bargain
Thomas from Bradenton, FL on 9/3/2018
Since the introduction of home theater receivers (I'm old), I have used Yamaha receivers exclusively, previously choosing middle to upper middle levels depending on specific setup needs. For a new 5.1, 4k secondary system, I decided to go with the new "budget" RX-V385, and I couldn't be happier. The YPAO setup is a joy (and checking it against test tones with a decibel meter showed only minute variations). If it is missing anything truly useful other than power and more inputs than most people need, I can't find it. I've always used very efficient speakers (klipsch, etc.) and don't turn up to excessive volumes, so the power, even in a large family room is not a concern. It even accepts banana plugs for speakers (highly advisable in any setup). hdmi arc works flawlessly, input switching is smooth and fast and operating with a harmony hub remote (I always use yamaha remotes only for setup purposes and special programming, keeping the system locked after changes). All in all, a great performance bargain.

Very Flexible, Great Unit
Don from Nampa, ID on 7/18/2018
This unit has an amazing amount of flexibility for any receiver, much less an entry level. It has plenty of power and is easy to operate once you get used to it. I purchased it for 2 primary reasons. 1) It has a setting for a surround system with all the speakers on the front wall. Even though I did't like the idea, my new home has a great room concept with the kitchen and I am 70 years old and was even going to attempt getting in the ceiling. This feature does work and adds depth to the sound. 2) I am deaf in one ear and have gone to using a pair of Bose Comfort 35 Headphones for everything. These are Bluetooth wireless and the new Dish Hopper 3 unit has a Bluetooth transmitter in it. Great for TV but does nothing for movies on disc.. Yamaha is one of the few that has a Bluetooth transmitter in their receiver. Many make you think the do by stating "Bluetooth", but it is a Bluetooth "receiver only". One minor "con" was that the Bluetooth coming from the TV did not always get as loud as I wanted and the headphones would "beep" telling me I had turned them to maximum volume. The excellent and polite tech person at Crutchfield informed me the maximum volume output is set by the receiver manufacturer. I set it where I still get the Bluetooth for TV from the Dish which does not have this problem, but get the Bluetooth for movies from the receiver. For some reason the movies seem to have a naturally higher volume, as does HBO. Interesting!
Pros: Flexibility, Bluetooth Receiver and Transmitter. Setting for surround sound speakers all on front wall
Cons: Slight issue with Bluetooth volume on TV shows

Excellent sound!
Robert from Carlisle, MA on 6/28/2018
Excellent value! I purchased this receiver strictly for the audio capability, I do not use the video functions and it is not connected to a monitor. I use this receiver for background music in my shop either using the USB port or bluetooth connection to my iPhone. I did test the FM reception and it does work well, unfortunately it can't correct the program material or endless commercials on FM radio :) Setup is straight forward, the audio self calibration works exceptionally well. It identifies the speaker configuration, in my case 4 speakers, sets equalization, time delay, and level corrections at the point where the microphone is placed. Keep in mind that in very large spaces, 2000sq ft in my case, if the microphone is not placed close to the center the balance (left-right) and front-back) will be far off, and you may get an error message that the microphone is too far away, most users would never see this error, I was very favorably impressed with the built in calibration routine, the degree of correction it could make, and how it identified my far from optimal initial location of the microphone. The only down side for me is the lack of a tape IN-OUT jack, not for the recording function, but to add an equalizer for Bose 901's or delay for example, or to easily drive additional power amps. To add additional PA's a high level to low level transformer could be added. It does have a low level line out for a subwoofer. In summary would purchase another!
Pros: Built in audio equalization system is very impressive and capable. Many listening modes can be selected to match audio program material.
Cons: No low level line out or tape loop, will not be an issue for most users as this receiver is intended for A/V applications
