Versatile wireless features from a super-compact speaker

Looking for a great-sounding speaker for your nightstand or bookshelf? The compact Yamaha MusicCast 20 gives you lots of ways to listen. You can stream from your smartphone via Bluetooth — or Apple AirPlay 2 if you have an iPhone® or iPad®. And the MusicCast 20 can connect to your home Wi-Fi network to give you access to internet radio, podcasts, and more.

Clear sound and intuitive controls

The MusicCast 20 features a 1-1/8" soft dome tweeter for clear highs and a 3-1/2" woofer to fill out the midrange and lower frequencies. Two side-firing passive radiators reinforce the bass. Top-panel buttons include three one-touch presets and an alarm control.

MusicCast: simple multi-room audio

You can combine up to 10 MusicCast speakers and components in a whole-house system, and control them all with Yamaha's excellent MusicCast mobile app. Play your digital music library, internet radio stations, and popular streaming services. There's support for Pandora® and SiriusXM. If you're a Spotify® Premium subscriber, Spotify Connect lets you access all your favorite albums and playlists. You can even stream high-resolution audio files.

Wireless surround sound? Yes, please.

Here's a cool feature for folks who like to declutter. You can use two of these speakers as wireless rear surrounds with select Yamaha home theater receivers. That lets you avoid running speaker wire to the back of your room. (You will need to connect each speaker to AC power, though.)

Bluetooth multi-room streaming

Bluetooth streaming from your phone is handy. But with MusicCast, Bluetooth becomes even more convenient. Stream from your smartphone to the MusicCast 20. Then you can use the MusicCast app to send that audio content to any and all other MusicCast speakers and components throughout your home. It's an easy way to share the audio from any app on your phone or tablet, including podcasts and YouTube™ clips.

Q
I have 3 Musiccast speakers and a Yamaha wireless receiver (RX-V483). I have had a lot of trouble with this app because it drops signal over the 2.4GHz wifi quite often. Also, one of the speakers is 'not found' nearly every day, so I have to readd that speaker. I have replaced the wireless router (TP-Link Archer 6), as my previous router was over 10 years old; but this did not make any difference. My question is: his this fixable? Or is the MusicCast software itself to blame? I have an email into Yamaha support, but they have not answered in over a week. (BTW this interface is pretty poor...I cannot see what I'm typoing...) thanks, Rick

I wish I could answer your question. I have two of these and have never been able to get them to work as surround sound as they are advertised. I got so frustrated with them I haven't messed with them for months until I got this email from Crutchfield about a week ago. I cannot even get Musicast to connect to my network now since I swapped out my router to a new model, it just sits in limbo and tells me I need to connect to my old router? What a joke. None of the Crutchfield advisors have been able to help you?

We have a similar Yamaha set up in our home. Our problems were with the initial set up, and it took a knowledgeable installer about four hours to get it all to work together. We did strengthen the router and for the most part the system has worked fine since then. Sorry about your problem.

I am using Orbi Routers and connecting via satellite/ remote and network cable to one unit for internet radio sources. I have numerous drops and reconnects and presently not solved. I attribute this to way to many wifi sources working throughout the home. I also have inadvertently set up two separate channels with a 3 /1 setup as you are describing. I have found that if I use regularly it will maintain better but that should not be necessary. I found a writeup under reviews on crutchfeld those proposed a solution that made sense to me. If I can find it I will forward. I don't think the App was well thought out but live the speakers so I continue to push forward.

I purchased the same speakers and had the same experience unfortunately and ended up returning them. I was super excited when they arrived but had continuous connection issues and after even trying a second speaker still no resolution so had to return them and keep the wired speakers going.

I have your identical equipment (from Crutchfield, 1 year old) -- and a similar problem. Connectivity has been reasonably good, but the dropout, in an otherwise clear signal, is frequent and frustrating. Basically unlistenable. This occurs regardless of how close I place the speaker to the router (ATT Uverse system that works well for everything else) and the receiver. Occurs with all 3 speakers. Software is far from elegant, but seems ok. Sorry to not have a solution, but I feel your pain. Hope the good Crutchfield folks can help! Rob

Q
Is there a way to control the tone and bass on the unit if you are using the net radio ??
rick  Apr 03, 2019

A
There is volume but no separate tone control on the speakers. Just whatever is on your app. (The sound is awesome)
david  Apr 06, 2019
A
Yes. You do that from the app on your phone. Once you set up your room(s) click/touch on a station such as Lithium (SirusXM), at the bottom of the screen there will be a volume level, a square box that pauses the station and on the bottom right are three lines with dots on them or "levels." Click/touch this and you can control the high, mid, low, sound program, sleep. I have really enjoyed this speaker.

I bought this speaker as a gift so I don't know. I did hear how it sounds and it was great for its size. I believe Crutchfield has a return policy if it does not meet your expectations.

No idea. I have seen this on another Yamaha product I purchased but nowhere did I see an explanation for how to use it. Maybe it is something only Yamaha can access.

According to the Users Manual, it, along with the USB port, are used for service only. I haven't been able to find any additional documentation on these ports.

Q
Can this speaker be used to bring TV audio from an existing Yamaha 5.1 receiver to a second room/space? (Not as wireless surrounds, as I already have wired ones.)

A
If I understand your question, yes. The MusicCast amp, pre-amp and speakers can all be customized into groups on the app. A group will play the same audio source when connected to the same WiFi network.

I do not know the speaker is in a different location from where I am now. You might consider contacting Yamaha support. I found them very helpful.

I just checked it for you & I only saw the one on the back, which is very obvious. Sorry!

There is one mounting thread. It is on the back of the speaker.

the mounting thread is only on the back. My speaker is attached to a simple mount I picked up on Amazon for $15/pair which is anchored to a wall stud, and it's works great.

Mounting thread is on the back only. I have it on Mounting Dream floor stand. It works very well. Most mounting systems come with multiple bracket arrangements.

Only back of the speaker.

I called Yamaha tech support. They were very helpful . The negative is the long wait time before someone answered the phone.

If the receiver has MusicCast it will work but tough to set up. The app is quite clumsy. Speakers sound good tho
