Wireless Streaming Amplifier: The Yamaha WXA-50 is a wireless streaming amplifier that is part of Yamaha's MusicCast multiroom audio eco-system. Start with the MusicCast WXA-50 amplifier and add more MusicCast devices over time (like wireless speakers, AV receivers, and soundbars from Yamaha) for a wireless multiroom audio solution. Up to 32 MusicCast devices and 10 groups can be connected.

Discrete Stereo Amplifier: The Yamaha WXA-50 is equipped with a discrete stereo amplifier with low-impedance drive capability, dynamic power, minimal distortion, and excellent sound quality. The amplifier is stable down to 4Ω.

  • 4: 105W x 2Ch (20Hz-20kHz, 0.06% THD)
  • 6: 70W x 2Ch (20Hz-20kHz, 0.06% THD
  • 8: 55W x 2Ch (20Hz-20kHz, 0.06% THD)

Superior Audio Technology: Yamaha's relentless pursuit of sonic purity is clearly evident in the engineering of their WXA-50 wireless streaming amplifier. The WXA-50 features a solid metal body with an aluminum cover and a slim, compact design that fits just about anywhere. Under the hood, you'll find high-performance components and advanced circuitry that deliver powerful, sonically-pure amplification.

  • High Performance DAC: The amplifier circuitry uses the same high-performance ESS Sabre digital-to-analog converter (DAC) found in Yamaha's high-end Yamaha AV receivers.
  • Precision Volume Control: A 48-bit digital volume control provides much greater precision and quality than conventional controls.
  • Proprietary Power & Ground Architecture: A proprietary power supply ground configuration prevents sound degradation.
  • Rigid Chassis: A highly-rigid metal chassis supplies the stability necessary for clear, powerful music reproduction.

Yamaha Proprietary Sound Processing: The WXA-50 wireless streaming amplifier incorporates a variety of Yamaha proprietary sound processing technologies - like Compressed Music Enhancer, Volume-Adaptive EQ, & Advanced Bass Extension. You can also choose to bypass this digital audio processing.

  • Compressed Music Enhancer: The Compressed Music Enhancer greatly improves sound reproduction from smartphones or other compressed sources, like MP3 files.
  • Volume-Adaptive EQ: Volume-adaptive EQ automatically adjusts the bass/treble balance according to the volume level.
  • Advanced Bass Extension: Advanced Bass Extension Processing provides a deeper, richer low-end sound - great for use with compact or in-wall speakers.
  • Direct Playback Mode: Direct playback mode allows you to play back high-resolution audio sources just as they are, without any processing.
Note: These audio settings are accessible only from the MusicCast app on your compatible Apple iOS or Android mobile device.

Advanced Audio Features: The Yamaha WXA-50 offers additional audio adjustments to get the most out of the speaker and your music.

  • Ultra Low Jitter PLL: Sets the strength of the jitter removal applied to the audio input being played back, in order to adjust the audio quality. When the level is set high, the jitter removal is more effective, but the sound may cut out on low-speed networks. When the level is set low, the jitter removal is less effective, but the signal is more reliable for lower speed networks.
  • 3-Band EQ: The amplifier's 3-band EQ (High/Mid/Low) can be adjusted from -6 to +6dB in 0.5dB steps, so you can tailor the sound to your preference.
  • Speaker Type: Optimizes the WXA-50's audio output for the type of speakers you have connected - Compact, Bookshelf, Floorstanding, In-ceiling, or In-Wall.
Note: To access the above listed audio features, you will need to access the internet and use the Web Control screen on your mobile device or computer.

Volume Levels: The WXA-50 provides a variety of volume level controls, settings, and adjustments.

  • Initial Volume: Set the volume level when the power is turned on. You can choose between Off (same as the volume when the unit was turned off), Mute, and -80dB to + 0dB in increments of 0.5dB.
  • Max Volume: Set the receiver's maximum volume level. This feature is useful to avoid turning the volume too loud by mistake. You can set the Max Volume from -20dB to 0dB in 5dB steps.
  • L/R Balance: Adjust the balance of the volume between the left and right speakers from -12 to +12 in 1 steps.
  • Input Trim: Adjust the volume level of each input. This is useful to balance the level of each input to avoid sudden changes in volume when switching between input sources. The range is from -6dB to +6dB in 0.5dB increments.
  • Subwoofer Volume: Adjust the volume of the amplifier's subwoofer output independently from the main volume. Adjustable from -6dB to +6dB in 0.5dB steps.

Note: To access the above listed audio features, you will need to access the internet and use the Web Control screen on your mobile device or computer.

Analog & Digital Inputs: The WXA-50 wireless streaming amplifier is fitted with analog & digital inputs. There is one stereo RCA input for connecting an analog audio source. There is one optical (toslink) digital input for connecting digital audio sources. The optical digital input supports 2ch PCM audio up to 32-bit/192kHz.

USB-A Port: The Yamaha WXA-50 is equipped with a rear-panel USB-A 2.0 port that allows you to enjoy a variety of music files stored on a USB mass storage class memory device, such as a USB thumbdrive or portable digital audio player (not compatible with USB HDDs). Your USB mass storage class device must be formatted in FAT 16 or FAT32. USB portable audio devices that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the AV receiver's USB port (5V/0.5A); even in standby mode. Compatible music files include:

  • DSD (2.8MHz/5.6MHz)
  • FLAC (up to 192kHz/24-bit)
  • AIFF (up to 192kHz/24-bit)
  • WAV (up to 192kHz/24-bit)
  • ALAC (up to 96kHz/24-bit)
  • MP3 (up to 48kHz/320kpbs)
  • AAC (up to 48kHz/320kbps)
  • WMA (up to 48kHz/320kbps)
Note: The receiver's USB port does not support Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad or Android smartphones/tablets.

Binding-Post Speaker Outputs: The WXA-50 wireless streaming amplifier is fitted with four binding post terminals for connection of a single pair of 4 to 16-ohm speakers. The binding-posts will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin-connectors, spade-lugs, and banana plugs (single or dual).

Aux Output (Fixed): The stereo RCA auxiliary output (fixed) allows you to daisy-chain the WXA-50's audio signal output to another integrated amplifier with volume control.

Subwoofer Output: The WXA-50 is equipped with a mono-RCA subwoofer output for connecting a powered sub (sold separately). The subwoofer output is full-range; you will need to use a powered sub with a built-in low-pass crossover.

Customer Q&A

25 questions already asked

Does the WXA-50 support Gapless playback?
michael  Jan 04, 2023
1 answer
Greetings Michael, and thank you for your question. Gapless would be on the source material. The WXC-50 will not add any gaps. If your streaming source has Gapless playback, the WXC-50 will play it back as gapless if it is a supported file type. If the file itself does not playback gapless, there are third party apps that can correct this. The WXC 50 has been around at least 6 years now, and Gapless playback is still relatively new. Bottom line, if its gapless going in, most files will be gapless going out.

Is it possible to connect my existing turntable to this unit and have it stream to another MusicCast amplifier?
brian  Oct 20, 2022

Yes you can connect your turntable to the analog input to stream to other MusicCast devices.
arielle  Oct 20, 2022 (Staff)
Can this Musiccast amplifier be paired with a Musiccast-compatible receiver to provide wireless surround? I already have passive rear speakers (using another wireless solution I want to improve upon), but can't run speaker wire to the rear of the room. Can a second unit also be added to the Musiccast-compatible receiver to provide a second zone, and even a third for Atmos? Any guess when a more vendor-neutral option like WISI will be more widely available?

Yamaha Musicast receivers/speakers can be linked together to allow multiple Musicast devices in the same room to be linked togeher or can be in separate rooms/zones for multi-room audio. There's a link function in the app to do this and you choose the room you want your device(s) to be in. You can set up a second Musicast Receiver in the same room to drive your rear speakers. As far as a "vendor-neutral" option, consider SONOS. Each SONOS device needs a power cable and the devices create their own network to share audio signal like Musicast. Everything is built into each speaker: SONOS multi-room audio, AirPlay2 multi-room audio, dozens of streaming services, etc.
malcolm  Mar 28, 2022
these units would basically pump out the full sound its getting from the source so you will just hear the entire array of sound as you would from the TV speakers. The Yamaha engineering is not as advanced as Sonos in that it does not support true surround sound in a wireless manner.

Does it work with Yamaha MusicCast subwoofer?
william  Sep 26, 2021

No, the MusicCast sub only works with their MusicCast wireless speakers.

Do the tone controls/equalizer/DSP work when streaming via Airplay? I understand the device doesn't have analog tone controls, and that these can only be adjusted via the MusicCast app.
mateo  Jul 24, 2021

You can adjust the tonal controls within the app when using Airplay or any other input. You are correct that there are no analog controls, only what you see depicted.
malcolm  Mar 28, 2022
No - those "controls" are only adjustable via MusicCast app. I spent an evening adjusting the DSP and haven't touched it since. The good news is - for streaming through Airplay, just select the amp from your mobile device and play. The beauty of anything MusicCast is linking devices for a multi-room audio network with great music sourcing. If all you're looking for is a small amp that's Airplay compatible, there are other choices with knobs.

Is it possible to connect this unit to Garden Bluetooth speakers. What sort of range would I get? The location would be around 10 meters from the unit. What Bluetooth speakers would you recommend to compliment this unit?
marc  Apr 05, 2021
2 answers
10 meters is about the limit of bluetooth range generally, regardless of devices before the connection quality degrades. There are other factors like whether or not there are obstacles (walls, vegetation) that may affect the range your speakers. Results can vary widely, so testing the equipment helps you know for sure.
malcolm  Mar 28, 2022
Should work fine. I link my cell phone via bluetooth to the unit to stream music and the range is right around 10 m, depending on how many walls are in between the unit and speaker.

Is the USB connection only for accessing music files on a storage device or can it also be used to directly cable connect to my laptop?
steve  Dec 31, 2020
1 answer
The instructions say that you can, although I couldn't test it because I didn't have the right USB cable to directly hook up my notebook computer to the Yamaha WXA-50. You can also link your notebook via Bluetooth, wireless WiFi, or a wired ethernet connection. I play files from my computer via the network connection.
george  Dec 31, 2020
Trying to do initial NETWORK setup to WXA-50 with address fields and basic network configuration. But I'm trying to initially connect using BlueTooth wireless connection between cell phone and WXA-50 Unit.... Can this be done..?

You should be able to do that. With the receiver on, press the Bluetooth button on the remote. Turn Bluetooth on in your phone, and search for available devices. Find the receiver, and connect. The receiver should then play whatever you select on the phone.
benjamin  Nov 11, 2020
Probably not. It's going to want to connect to a network. Do yourself a huge favor and throw the "easy" instructions. The instructions in the full manual are easier to follow and will walk you through the steps item by item.

Yamaha Wxa-50 & r-n602 are same value according to price range. So which amp is better as per sound quality & feature?
sanjoy  Aug 27, 2020
1 answer
Sound quality and features are virtually identical. Probably the biggest difference is that any sound "adjustments" with the WXA-50 are handled through an app on your phone or tablet. The reason for choosing the WXA-50 is it's size. It easily fits on a shelf and doesn't take up the space of a full size amplifier or component. It's a 1/2 rack width and approx. 2" tall. Integrating this into a MusicCast network is simple. The sound is incredibly clean and really likes the 6ohm Yamaha speakers I've paired it with.

Can I control volume from cable remote (Bluesound does)?
peter  May 22, 2020
4 answers
Not exactly - this amp doesn't have HDMI input for a CES channel. If you're looking for an amp to pair with a TV, Yamaha has AV reciever choices available that would better fit your needs. You can however use it with the Yamaha MusicCast app on your phone or tablet to control volume remotely. If you have it linked to another MusicCast amp that is connected by HDMI to a TV - that cable remote will control master volume on both units in the balance you've set between them.
jeff  May 22, 2020
No; it's not equipped to recognize IR or RF remote control. It uses Wifi and an App to control remotely. This system works WAY better than a remote control.
ronald  May 22, 2020
Technically it should work as long as your cable provider has the Yamaha codes and the remote. I haven't come across any yet that have not worked. On mine I'm currently using a Harmony universal remote and it is working fine. Also I use the Yamaha app on my iPad.Enter an answer to this question.
koester  May 22, 2020
I don't know. I use the Yamaha app on my iPad and it works like a champ.

Should I be able to stream music from the Internet Archive with Yamaha WXA-50?
gary  May 11, 2020

While I have not tried Internet Archive directly, I am almost positive it would work as I stream music from many sources including net radio sources, bluetooth from a server as well as from my turntable and reel to reel using the aux input option. I will give it a try and update if possible.

Can I connect wxa-50 and wxc-50 together? And how? Thanks
dung  Apr 15, 2020

Yes... connecting/synchronizing between multiple Yamaha devices is done through their MusicCast Controller app
david  Apr 15, 2020
You can, but I can't see why you would. The WXA-50 does everything the WXC-50 does, with the addition of it's amplification. The only reason I would purchase the WXC-50 is to operate as a music streamer and pre-amp for a larger amplifier that doesn't have the capabilities and wouldn't otherwise connect to the musiccast network.

I'm so sorry, but I honestly have no idea. I am primarily streaming music from net sources and have only played from my phone using Bluetooth. Airplay is on my list to look in to but this was purchased for a vacation home that we have only recently started moving in to so I have only been there a couple of times. I do know that Yamaha is really good about updating their firmware to keep their products current from my experience with previous products. I would assume they will do the same with this equipment. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
susan  Sep 04, 2018
Unfortunately No. It has a strong connection with Airplay 1, but no Airplay 2 support yet. Airplay 2 requires a firmware update so will see if Yamaha upgrades. I sure hope so because this is a great little amp.

I have a huge room. I would like to get two or three of these wireless amps to drive two or three pairs of speakers simultaneously in order to fill the room. Is this possible?
james  May 11, 2018

Yes. These will link together using the MusicCast app. The app is OK at best and this unit seems a bit overpriced for what it does (I have one of them to extend my 3 zone receiver to a fourth zone), but in terms of your question, it absolutely will work for your application.
craig  May 15, 2018
The app coordinates the signal going to each amp, so I believe you could easily set that up with this product. App is easy to use.
tom  May 15, 2018
Yes, in principle, but I have to say I have had problems with the fussiness of MusicCast & these WXA-50 systems on my wifi: break-ups when 2 or more units are linked to my computer, latency differences that cause an echo. But admittedly the problem may be with my wireless network. Wireless speaker systems will be a more reliable way to fill a large room with sound without running wires, unless you need the "zones" to run independently. I highly recommend Audioengine products, also on Crutchfield. My application is a multizone outside speaker system for a Christmas Light & Music Show. I tried to use the WXA's but it was unreliable, I got much better results using Audioengine D2's for wireless links between amplifiers.

Is there any automatic turn on feature for this? Specifically, on the optical input, is there a way to have it power on when something plays audio on that input?
stephen  Jan 20, 2018

No. If the unit is on standby, it will not power up when a connected device is turned on (I have a HD FM tuner on OPT, and when you turn the tuner on, I have to turn on the amp too to hear music.) MusicCast however does power it on. When I select the amp as the MusicCast output device from iTunes on my Mac, if the amp is off, it will power up.

Not that i know of.

Does this have enough power to drive a 6 speaker selector? It says 55 watts but also mentions 105 watts at 4ohm.
mark  Aug 02, 2017

The WXA-50 is a streaming stereo amp and drives one pair of (Right + Left) speakers. Amplifier output: 105watts/channel @ 4 ohms, 70watts/channel @ 6ohms, 55watts/channel at 8 ohms.
malcolm  Mar 28, 2022
I am using it with a 4 speaker selector (Niles SSVC-2) a pair of which are outside speakers, and I have plenty of volume headroom when all are going. Can't say for sure since it depends on the efficiency of your speakers and the quality of the switch (Niles has a impedance matching setup process) but I am impressed by the power that comes out of this little box.
peter  Aug 03, 2017
I don't think this is the most powerful receiver and I would consider something else. I had to go with this unit to expand a Yamaha Disklavier self playing baby grand piano. There was no other option for expansion. It does just an okay job, but has weak bass. I'd rate it a C-. I added a powered sub to make up the lack of bass. This was the only option for me and would have gone with a more powerful receiver if the option existed. I'd look elsewhere (unless of course if you are expanding a Disklavier!).......

I have a Yamaha RX-A830 A40427 receiver. I have zone 1 for my home theater with L, C, R front speakers and two rear speakers. I want to add kitchen, bedroom and outside speakers to perform as independent stereo sound or all in sync. What equipment do I need for full set up?
rick  Mar 11, 2017

Rick I wanted a whole house system my self and it is hard to find. However I finally let Crutchfield advise me and got Lucy"s help. I have 2 RX- 781 and a RX- 681 with 3 WXA-50s. And what a system it is. The three recievers power 3 separate surround sound TVs Zone 1 and a additional room on each with Zone 2. Then the WXA-50 a room each. The WXA-50 pricey but they do a lot. I started off with just one receiver and speakers at a time and as I got it working added more. The app adds the new equipment easily and quickly. A short learning cure. I have all this in a closet, and speakers in the ceilings and or wall. With the MusicCast app the control is amazing. I can link all rooms together or just two and in any combination I want. For the Super Bowl I had the same video going on all three TVs and the sound through out the house. It took time to set up and I am still fine tuning it. Lots of options with the app and the system. Still get some echo at times but that is volume and making sure audio sync or lip sync is set. I have been working on this for 4 months now and am no expert. Crutchfield has spent a couple of hours helping to get it right, and it works. The WXA-50 is not a receiver and so is not a radio. But man does it do everything else. My wife listens to books on tape and Bluetooth from her phone to every room. When linked to a receiver radio is played through the WXA. My only problem is controlling the cable boxes and TV remotely. Still working on it, and planning another WXA for my Shop, All my speakers are hard wired so have no info on Yamaha wireless speakers. So far I am very happy with Yamaha and Crutchfield.
alex  Mar 13, 2017
Does this receiver feature MusicCast? If so, you should look at Yamaha WXA-50. It lets you pair 2 sets of speakers in the same zone. So if large kitchen or front-to-back living room and dining room, or see deck and porch areas would benefit from 2 sets of speakers they can all be in the same zone.
