Features
Overview: The YH-5000SE is Yamaha's newest flagship model over-ear headphone that uses an Orthodynamic® driver to immerse you in sound. The headphones are hand-built by skilled craftsmen at the Kakegawa factory in Japan, where many other top-of-the-line Yamaha products are made, including grand pianos and audiophile audio components. The YH-5000SE comes with two types of earpads, two types of headphone cables, and a dedicated headphone stand.
Orthodynamic Driver: The YH-5000SE's Orthodynamic driver made its debut in 1976 with the famous HP-1 headphone. The newly redesigned driver takes advantage of 21st century technology and materials to deliver Yamaha's True Sound concept. As the world's leading manufacturer of musical instruments, Yamaha is dedicated to reproducing sound as the artist intended, with detail, accuracy, and emotion. The Orthodynamic driver is a type of planar magnetic driver with a circular spiral-shaped coil and circular thin-film diaphragm with concentric circle corrugation to maintain its shape. The driver is more responsive than a dynamic driver, and offers superior high-frequency performance with low distortion.
Open-Back Design: The headphone's large housing and ear cup total envelops the ear. Its open-back design allows air to flow in and out the large acoustic chamber to prevent sound reflections and eliminate distortion. A new Japanese-designed rolled plain Dutch weave stainless steel filter controls the air pressure inside the housing. Inside the chamber, an arch-shaped protrusion reflects the sound to provide accurate reproduction and proper control of the vocals and musical instruments. The result is a smooth, highly accurate reproduction of the music.
Headphone Construction: The YH-5000SE is built with lightweight materials that make it comfortable to wear for long sessions without fatigue. The earcup has a lightweight and rigid magnesium body that dampens vibration. The two-layer headband has a stainless steel band that exerts lateral pressure to holds the earcups to your head. The thick, stitched leather head pad evenly disperses the weight and pressure of the headphone for a comfortable fit. You can make fine adjustments to the headband with the stepless slider for a precise, comfortable fit. The headphones have an inclined swivel mechanism that lets the earcups fit any size head.
Earpads: Two distinctly different types of earpads are included with the YH-5000SE. The leather earpad features soft sheepskin at the point of skin contact that offers some absorption of moisture and protection from odor. The outer ring is a flexible synthetic leather with small perforations for ventilation. The inside mesh provides ample air circulation without obstructing or altering the sound. The suede earpads are made of Ultrasuede® by Toray Industries. The soft non-woven material has the texture of suede with a comfortable feel against the skin. The earpads have 4 locking tabs that make them easy to remove and replace. Replacement earpads can be obtained directly from Yamaha.
Cables: The Yamaha YH-5000SE headphones come with two high-quality braided cables made with highly-conductive silver-coated OFC (oxygen-free copper). The unbalanced cable has a specially designed 3.5mm 3-pole plug. For audio components and professional consoles, a 3.5mm-to-6.3mm (1/8"-to-1/4") screw-type adapter is included. The balanced cable features a 4.4mm (pentaconn) 5-pole plug that works with many headphone amplifiers and DACs. Balanced cables provide a stronger signal, and are less susceptible to induced RF and EFI noise, compared to unbalanced (single-ended) cables. Both cables are 79" (2 meters) in length, and attach to the earcups with left and right 3.5mm plugs. Replacement cables can be obtained directly from Yamaha.
Headphone Stand: The YH-5000SE comes with an aluminum and copper alloy headphone stand (HST-5000) for hanging your headphones between listening sessions. When assembled, the stand is 4-5/8" x 11-1/8" x 5-3/4" (WxHxD). It weighs approximately 34-1/2 ounces.
