Design is fine. The look not so special. It works nicely and sounds good. I wish one could bypass the pre-amp. Anyone who buys one of these would have an integrated amplifier with phono inputs or a preamplifier also having that capability. Packed well upon delivery. Don't miss the power switch which under the turntable bed. Turn it on before putting that and the mat on the spindle. Be sure to remove the protective cover on the needle. The belt has a ribbon to enable placing the belt over the motor drive. All in all a good turntable. Just the look is a bit boring.

Pros: Automatic. Works well.

Cons: No bypass for the preamp. Not exactly a stylish look.

Trying to fit the belt into the motor was a pain. That's why I am returning it

Pros: Came right on time

Cons: It should be ready to play. And not to fight with the belt.

Excellent Entry Level Turntable

Extremely pleased with this purchase, I have the Denon DP-300 and bought this one for my 18 year old grandson. Not only does it exceed my expectations of a very good, high quality turntable, but for the cost it's a terrific choice. Sounds and tracks very well and nicely in appearance too. Would definitely recommend as an entry level piece.

Pros: Fully automatic, with built in phono amp and nice quiet tonearm operation. Nice quality cartridge with stylus included.

Cons: None whatsoever, grandson loves it!

Replaced a 30-year-old Denon with this rather inexpensive alternative. Wow. I don't play a lot of vinyl and had no idea how poor my old turntable sounded until listening to this one. The automated movements are kind of clunky but for my purposes this turntable works great. Would definitely recommend to anyone who needs a basic automatic turntable who doesn't feel the need to put out a large amount of coin for one.

No vibration damping

Crutchfield customer from Howell, MI on 5/17/2021

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

Sounds fine at low volume, but crank it up and the tone arm skips across the record with every kick of a bass drum. No vibration damping at all. Built in RCA cords are very short so unit cannot be place in a convenient location. I had to buy RCA extensions and place pieces of foam underneath the unit to stop the skipping. I guess you get what you pay for...

Pros: Price

Cons: No vibration damping, no manual control of tone arm, RCA cords too short.

Verified employee review (What's this?)

This turntable is PERFECT for those who want fully automatic features at a VERY low price. Everything is included, and set up is extremely easy. I thought I knew exactly what I was doing, and never read the instructions. There is a small switch under the main platter that has a position (off) if your pre-amp has NO phone input, and "on" if it does! My integrated amp did! I neglected to put the switch into the on position and my first LP sounded HORRIBLE. Reading the instructions solved everything!

Pros: VERY EASY set up--especially if one reads the instructions! Fully automatic. NICE dust cover. Included cartridge.

Cons: None, other than it probably does NOT perform as well as a $1000+ turntable and separate $1000 cartridge!

Plastic throughout. Upon first starting, needle grinds on table, automatically. Default setting is with preamp which makes for a horrible sound when played through a reciever that has phono jacks. Cannot be played anywhere near speakers which causes plastic housing to rattle and make needle scratch vinyl records. Great for first time buyer. It works though.

Pros: It works.

Cons: Great for first time buyer.

I bought this to replace an old Dual I got for free. I haven't had it that long but I like it so far. It sounds great on my Technics receiver, the speed/pitch is accurate, and it's easy to use. The auto return works well. It doesn't have a lot of features but it does what I want it to.

Pros: - Built in pre amp that can be switched off for receivers with phono inputs - Comes with a 45 adaptor

Cons: - Doesn't have a lever to manually raise the tone arm, you have to set it on the record with your finger if you don't use the auto start

A perfectly acceptable and very reasonably priced turntable. Easy to set up. Only downside is that the switch to select whether one is plugging the output into a phono input or an auxiliary input of the stereo is hidden under the turntable platter, and not obvious to find.

Look, ain't fancy but for the money it does the job. Holds its ground well if you are dancing in the room. Decent sound. Pre-amp built in. Cons: a little bit of work putting it together. The attachment to move the arm is hard for old fingers to get hold of. Overall, for what it is, it works just great.

Pros: Sound, balanced, doesn't shake, inexpensive

Cons: handle on arm is, well, hard to handle

Not that impressed with the quality of this turntable. Being a DENON product, which by the way, I've always loved and had their products for many years, I was disappointed in the overall looks. I also realize this product was a modest price, so I wasn't expecting a Mercedes Benz, but a Cadillac would have been good. I most likely will be returning this product and upgrading to a bit more quality. The sound was 'weak' and too much noise to my liking. As they say, "you get what you pay for"! Please know, this is not the fault of Crutchfield! They offer great products at great prices and I will continue to shop them.

Pros: Great turntable for a 'kids' room. Easy set-up

Cons: Quality of product not very good. Sound very weak and tinny. Not a professional looking turntable

Overall, I have been very pleased with this turntable. I dusted off my old albums and became nostalgic about listening to vinyl again. I couldn't rationalize to myself spending a fortune on a high end turntable when I consider all the various means I have of listening to music now. Surprisingly, the Denon DP-29 sounds really good to my ears even on my records that are 30+ years old. It was easy to set up, and I found the automatic play and stop a great feature. I had one issue with a menu feature on my Denon Receiver when I installed the turntable, but Crutchfield support helped me fix it within minutes. I think this is a great purchase for someone who wants to get back into listening to records without spending a fortune on a high end turntable.

Pros: Ease of installation, great value for price, automatic start and stop features.

Fantastic turntable for the price. Works really well. Two things I'd change, one is to have a lever to raise and lower the arm at any point on the record. Second is for the finger attachment (how you raise and lower the arm manually) to be a little bigger or easier to grasp ... my hands aren't as steady as they used to be. :)

Very unhappy with this purchase. There is minor assembly, the platter has to be attached. The belt is super cheap, it's basically a rubber band. The body is really cheap plastic. The buttons on the front are poorly made plastic. It just does not have the quality I expected. I didn't expect a high end turntable for the price, but I did expect something at a minimum standard of acceptability.

Verified employee review (What's this?)

This item may be alright for kids from 8-12. After that, they deserve better. I paid for a used DP-29. First, my experience in Hi-Fi: I began putting my first decent system together in 1977. I bought a BIC 940, then a Kenwood amp and AR-18 speakers, later a cassette deck. I began to collect, sell and thoroughly enjoy speakers from the AR's to Bolivar's, Technics, Micro-Acoustics, KLH's, Pioneers and as many amps and tape machines, tuners , CD, SACD, DVD-Audio and on to Japanese consumer heaven... After receiving my Ebay "prize" I gave it a look over. I thought,"NO way I would put good vinyl on this...who knows what kind of stylus it has? How much weigh does it track with? If I want to change cartridges do I really need epoxy, a hack-saw and two pennies taped to the head shell for weight? I threw it away. It came time a year and a half later to get a real but inexpensive turntable. It HAD to be automatic as I am prone to falling asleep and finding the record in the lead out groove...for hours. The controls are on mthe outside of the dust-cover where they should be. The DP-29 is built on the same design pattern as the cheapest asian offerings. Do yourself a favor and get a 300. It is as if two different companies designed and built them but although the DP-300 F is a step-up dollar-wise it is a real turntable, the other, a toy...the tonearm is just awful, the flutter is a problem as are the "little feet". Good for a classroom...maybe.

Pros: Cheap, easy to set-up, easy to chose cartridge.

Cons: You can only choose cartridge that is affixed to arm. No counterweight. Bad drive system, noisy. Cartridge cheap.... YUCK!

The set up is easy. Unfortunately I didnt open the box or set it up for nearly a year after buying it. It was a Christmas gift and we just didn't get around to bringing the boxes of LP's out of storage, or creating a good set up area soon enough. I know Crutchfield would have taken it back, it isn't their fault. My advice is set it up and use it right away to hear how your music sounds. I'm not sure if it is the cartridge- I see other reviewers mention issues with the sound because of the cartridge. In our case it actually plays the albums at a slightly higher speed. There is no adjustment for turntable speed on this model. I contrasted the playback to the artists website versions, or my purchased cd versions and indeed the sound is way off. One reviewer improved the sound by turning off a preamp on the model, which I couldn't locate or don't have. Another another reviewer said theirs played 78's well. Our model has speed adjustment for 45 and 33-1/3. Ours was bought a couple years ago. Sadly, I wouldnt even feel good giving it to Salvation Army.

Pros: Crutchfield is very helpful. I recommend them.

Cons: Consider buying a turntable with platter speed adjustment, and a mechanized tonearm lift so you can and cue the needle safely to different tracks easier.

I was recommended this product to give to my son for his 20th birthday at college. The first unit did not work and as the stylus arm and motor would not activate. A second unit was shipped and this unit had a humming noise when playing records. It was hooked up to two different amps with the same result. He is on his third try to get a unit to work for him and we have our fingers crossed that this one does the job. Denon should probably stay with making surround sound systems

Although I just recently purchased this item, I am confident that it will be just what I needed. It runs very smoothly and plays both LP and 45rpm records without any problems. The average customer reviews give it an academic grade of "B," which implies that very few complaints have been registered against the turntable. Doubtless, I would need to spend a lot more money for one the received an "A." rating. As the leading comsumer magazine would say it's a "Best Buy."

I got this turntable for my wife and have had it for around 6 months. The automatic arm no longer works, it only drops the needle on the record and then picks it back up and quits. We have to manually use the arm. Now when it comes to the end of a record it picks the needle up and drops it over and over. Tried to speak with Denon over the issue. I have to pay up front to ship it to a repair center to see if it's broken. No reimbursement for that. I explained that I'm not even remotely close to a center. Aproximately 900 miles. They said I'm sorry there is nothing I can do. I suggest if you live in a rural area, to not buy from Denon. I can see paying for the return if it turns out that the product was not defective. Not happy.

Pros: Crutchfield is a great company to deal with! In no way should you use this review against them. They're great!

Cons: Relatively poor customer service on Denon's part.

Had it for a few days and so far so good, except that the turntable has no Cue setting, so that if you are cleaning a record, you have to hold the tonearm up with one hand(so that the record starts spinning), while you clean the record with your other hand. Makes it a bit awkward. Also, the tonearm has the tiniest handle to hold onto, so those of us with gorilla fingers may be a bit put out. Best to order another turntable with a Cue setting.

Five stars for price. Four and a half stars for sound. Three stars for light construction. Two stars for manual usability. It averages out to 3 5/8 stars, but rounds to four. I'm running this turntable through an Onkyo TX-8555 reciever and Klipsch Heresy III speakers and it sounds very good. My biggest complaint is the way the turntable is billed as having a "manual lifter mechanism". I should have looked more closely at the photographs, but this mechanism is not a lift lever, it is a small plastic prong sticking out at a slight angle beside the cartridge. I find it extremely difficult, and I do not have gorilla hands, to manually place the needle. I pretty much just press "start" and let it do its thing, which is mostly fine because I'm usually listening front to back anyhow, but I would love to have a safer option for manually placing the needle. The two-year warranty eases my mind toward the light construction. Absolutely workable interim turntable. FYI, if you Wikipedia "belt-drive turntable" you get a photograph of this one with the platter off.

I received this as a holiday gift from my wife's parents. It was simple to setup and has excellent sound quality. The only issue I had is that initially there was quite a bit of sound distortion. After I ruled out dirty vinyl by trying new LP, I thought maybe it came with a bad cartridge. I came on Crutchfield.com to research how to buy a replacement cartridge, but when I read the product description for this player, it mentioned in the features a built-in pre-amp. This was not mentioned in the manual at all during setup. So I decided to check for this switch's position. Sure enough, it was set to "On" by the factory. I'm not sure why this would be; most receivers these days have built-in amplifier. Maybe they assume that if you're buying a turntable that you have separate tuner amplifier? Not sure. Anyways, switching this to "Off" fixed the issue. Now I have excellent-sounding LPs through my home stereo!

Some audio software to clean the sound up on the worn out records (eliminates the echo/poping and slurring). Sounds wounderful. My parents are very thankfull. If you are planning on burning your records on to CD format I recommend having some sort of audio software to clean up the sound and to but the breaks in. When you are ready to burn set your bit rate to at least 192kbps so you don't wreck the sound. The lower the number the worst it will sound.

I hadn't had a functional turntable for many years, but I still had a pile of LP's ranging from never-played to well-worn. I bought this Denon and also bought a patch cord to connect it to my PC. The built-in preamp in this turntable allowed me to play LP's directly into the sound card (using PolderBits recording and editing software), then burn to CD. Now I have all my old favorite LP's on CD. This turntable is pretty minimal, but works great and sounds fine. Like some other reviews say, it's not fancy or top of the line, but a good value. I would sure recommend it for someone wanting to dust off and enjoy those old LP's but not spend a lot of money doing so. And I've always thought you can't go wrong buying from Crutchfield.

Good Name, Bad Choice....

I purchased the Denon DP-29F because my wonderful Onkyo CP-1046F direct drive, fully automatic turntable (Great Specs) gave up the ghost after 22 years. I shopped locally for a turntable and only found cheaply built Sony and Audio-Technica models so devoid of quality that I passed them up, despite the low prices. Indeed, everything available with quality and specs similar to my Onkyo was $700 or more! Crutchfield is one of my favorite stores, so I looked online and found the Denon. Denon has a good reputation, so I thought I'd try it. Bad choice - This particular Denon has no user cueing feature, a non-steady belt drive (do you LIKE the singer to slur her words?), and a cartridge that is fixed permanently to the tonearm. You can't change the cartridge for a better one! This was particularly disappointing because the sound quality of the standard cartridge was very poor; I'd call it tinny! Not much midrange and little bass. I cannot recommend this cheaply built, poor quality turntable. I suggest having a quality turntable repaired (as I'm going to do), or spend a little more and get a better turntable, preferably direct drive with user cueing and a removable cartridge. I contacted Crutchfield and explained my disappointment, indicating I wanted to return the item. Crutchfield's response was "No problem! Happy to be of service :)" I bought the wrong turntable, but I bought it from the right place. Crutchfield customer service is second to none!

My record collection is mostly from garage sales etc... so I was not looking to spend too much $$. Pros: I was very impressed (and surprised) with the quality of the sound and it was easy to hook up using the built in preamp, which many turntables do not have. Cons: You get what you pay for; the turntable is no frills. Summary: If you are looking for a high end turntable this is not it, but if you want to dust off your old LP's and enjoy them again with out spending big $$ this turntable is a good choice.

Very good value for the price

I buy old LPs (mostly on garage sales and library sales). The majority cost 25 cents a piece. I didn't want to invest few thousand buck in state of the art turntable to play 25 cent records. I was a bit sceptical about this one, but after about a year my opinion is very positive. It looks spartan, no faked "silver" plating, etc. but it PLAYS and does this very well. It has built-in preamp, therefore it is easy to connect to amplifiers that don't have "phono" input. Highly recommended if you want to get cheap, but reliable and well working piece of equipment.

I bought this more on a whim than anything else. I didn't have any records but I Love music and by the time I recieved my order I had already bought some records from the local shop I wanted to hear. So when I hooked it up, which was very simple and self explanitory, I expected to hear a what, I thought in my head it would sound like, a scratchy, grainy sound that people like to put in movies but it sounded great. With this purchase I can hear music I have never heard, and ranging from a few dollars to as much as you want to spend. you can find old records for sale anywhere or buy new ones for about the same as a CD.
