Product Research

Weighted, Belt-Driven Platter: The Denon DP-400 turntable features a weighted, belt-driven platter that provides precision playback of your vinyl records that is faithful to the original recording.

  • Speed Selector: The DP-400 turntable supports playback at 33 1/3 rpm, 45 rpm and 78 rpm (the record rpm is normally indicated on the jacket or label of the record). It easily plays your entire vinyl collection with a precision. 78 RPM records require an additional cartridge that is not included and sold separately (see Accessories Tab).
  • Auto Sense: Integrated auto sensor accurately controls the platter, preventing unwanted speed fluctuations during playback so you can enjoy audio reproduction exactly as the artist intended.

Solid-Built Construction: The turntable's solid-built construction offers both the strength and high-density needed to reproduce detailed, resonance-free music. Thick cabinet walls and a weighted platter provide the optimal surface for your vinyl collection, reducing external vibration.

Specially Engineered Tone-Arm: The Denon DP-400 turntable features a carefully engineered curved, horizontal tracking angled tone-arm with auto-lift and playback stop. When the vinyl reaches the end of playback, the tone-arm auto-lifts 10 seconds prior to the groove end, preserving the excellent condition of your album (you will still need to manually return the tonearm to its rest). The curved tone-arm design also reduces harmonic distortion, ensuring a crystal clear sonic signal every time you listen. A counterweight is included and will need to be installed on the tone-arm.

MM or MC Cartridge Compatible: The Denon DP-400 includes an MM cartridge for more precise listening and added musical detail. If you prefer listening via an MC cartridge, you can easily swap out the existing MM cartridge to fit your audio preferences. The included MM cartridge does not come pre-installed on the tone-arm; you will need to install the MM cartridge headshell onto the tone-arm.

Note: The supplied stylus is good for approximately 400 hours of playback. Replace the stylus in a timely fashion to prevent damage to your record collection. When replacing the stylus, make sure to request the DSN-85.
Anti-Skating Dial: Anti-skating adjustment is performed to counter the force which pulls the stylus tip inside due to the record rotation. Make sure that the anti-skating value is the same as the stylus pressure value. The appropriate stylus pressure for the cartridge included with this unit is 2.0 g (19.6 mN).

Built-In Phono Equalizer Preamp: This turntable has a built-in phono equalizer preamp that enables record playback when connected to receivers and integrated amps with external audio inputs, but no dedicated Phono input. The turntable's built-in phono equalizer creates an open, enveloping sound stage that brings to life your vinyl collection while staying true to the original recording.

RCA Outputs: The DP-400 turntable features a set of stereo RCA outputs to connect to your receiver or integrated amplifier using a set of stereo RCA cables. A 39" stereo RCA cable is included.

Removable Dual-Purpose Dust Cover: The included removable dust cover features a modern design, elevating the overall aesthetic of the DP-400 turntable, while also eliminating vibration issues that affect music quality associated with attached or hinged covers. The dust cover must be removed during playback of records. Doubling as a display stand for your album cover, you can place the dust cover upright on the included base and show it of proudly to family & friends.

Note: This is not a hinged dust cover. It simply lifts on and off. The dust cover must be removed during playback of records. The dust cover can be put back on the turntable once playback has stopped and the tone-arm is back on its rest.

Auto Stop/Power Off Function: When the Automatic Stop is turned on, the tone arm automatically raises after playback ends and the turntable stops. This keeps the turntable from continuing to turn and cause stylus wear should you accidentally fall asleep while listening to a record. The power will turn off approximately 20 minutes after the turntable stops. Use the power/rpm switch knob to restart playback.

Is the Audio-Technica VM540ML compatible with Denon Dp-400? If (should I?) buy pre-mounted on head she'll? Good upgrade?
daveb  Mar 20, 2023
1 answer
The VM540ML would be compatible with the DP-400. The AT-HS10 headshell is also compatible, which means that you could purchase and use VM540ML/H. In my opinion, this would be a fantastic upgrade to an already great turntable.

Would a Ortifon Cadenza red be ok for this tt?
robert  Nov 28, 2022
1 answer
The Ortofon Cadenza Red would physically mount to the headshell on this sweet Denon DP-400 no problem, Robert. Since the Cadenza is a moving coil cartridge you will not be able to use the built-in phono preamp on board the Denon or your receiver's phono input, or current phono preamp if it only supports moving magnet style sadly. You will need to use a component turntable preamp that does have adjustments for moving coil cartridge combinations. The Pro-Ject Phono Box S2 in the link below is a great choice, and it has the adjustments for even low output moving coil carts. Sounds like a great Vinyl setup to me Robert!

Can this Denon DP400 turntable be connected directly to a pair of Klipsch r-15pm without using a preamp?
gil  Nov 10, 2022
1 answer
Yes, you may connect these items directly. A separate phono preamp will not be necessary. Both the DP-400 and R-15PM have built-in phono preamps. You will only need to have the internal preamp in one or the other switched on. Do not use both internal preamps at once.
zachary  Nov 10, 2022 (Staff)
I am purchasing a ortofon quintet red. Do I need a preamp?
robert  Sep 07, 2022
1 answer
We don't carry that specific cartridge and haven't tested it at all, but from the specs I see on it, it is a decent performer without one.
brooke  Sep 08, 2022 (Staff)
Can this model be used with a DL-103 MC cartridge? I would be using a pre with mc option.
michael  Sep 14, 2021
2 answers
I need a more powerful unit for that cartridge
steve  Sep 16, 2021
Yes you can. I'm currently using a DL-103R with this turntable. Get a second headshell and you can easily keep the factory cartilage ready to roll.
manuel  Sep 14, 2021
What is the plinth of the Denon dp-400 made of?
richard  Nov 18, 2020
2 answers
The plinth appears to be some type of acrylic.
billy  Nov 18, 2020
Not totally sure. Seems to be a dense wood (particle board or MDF) wrapped with high gloss plastic. Has good weight and I've been totally happy with the TT.
william  Nov 18, 2020
how hard to set up?

shawn  Jul 22, 2020
Not difficult at all. Easy to follow videos available on line as well as step by step directions in the user's guide. Takes about 15 minutes at the most cartridge has been pre-aligned so that saves a ton of time.
billy  Jul 20, 2020
Pretty easy, I just followed the instructions and was ready to go in about half an hour
ronald  Jul 20, 2020
Very easy. Maybe the only difficult part is the drive belt, but the instructions are very good and the way unit is packaged will guide you through process. Then in the back of the unit is the switch to choose between Aux and phono. My amplifier is old and had a phono input. You might use the Aux.
william  Jul 20, 2020
Very easy. Plug into stereo, plug into power, weight set per instructions, and play. I haven't had a turntable in 20 years and I had no issue. Big fun.
josiah  Jul 17, 2020
It is easy, it has instructions, they are easy to understand. It only will take about 5-10min. Max.
harold  Jul 17, 2020
It"s really quite easy to set-up. In fact, you can watch video's on You Tube that shows you how. They may also be on Denon's own web site. Maybe 5 to 10 minutes & your done!
richard  Jul 17, 2020
Overall it was easy. One of the features of this unit is it has a balanced arm. That takes going slow for five minutes to get the balancing correct. It is a good product.
wes w.  Jul 17, 2020
Extremely easy to setup. The instructions are straightforward. For me the hardest part was connecting the cables to the back of my receiver which is inside a cabinet.
steven  Jul 17, 2020
HI very easy just follow the directions, you should have no problems.
steve  Jul 17, 2020
That will depend on your setup a bit, but for us it was a snap. It probably took 10 minutes from start to finish. We also setup a new receiver we purchased with it and had zero issues swapping these in place of the old units.
stephanie  Jul 17, 2020
Very easy to set up. Out of the box it takes about five minutes to set up. Instructions are very clear.
kevin  Jul 17, 2020
If you had a turntable back in the day, it has the same set up. I think it is very easy to set up.
robert  Jul 17, 2020
Will the auto stop feature still work if I upgrade the cartridge and head shell?
vernard  Jan 14, 2020
7 answers
The automatic stop function has an ON/OFF button on the rear panel. In describing the function, the owner's manual does not reference any dependency on the cartridge and head shell. I have not yet upgraded the cartridge and head shell, but when I researched the product, a professional reviewer did upgrade it and did not mention any impact on the automatic stop function, which was a feature specifically highlighted in the review.
wes w.  Jan 16, 2020
Yes, it will.
billy  Jan 15, 2020
Yes; I upgraded the cartridge and everything works fine.
william  Jan 15, 2020
enoch  Jan 15, 2020
steven  Jan 14, 2020
Yes, I replaced the stock cartridge/headshell with the ortofon 2m red and the auto-stop works.
sergii  Jan 14, 2020
I up-graded to a Nagaoka MP110H and the auto-stop works fine! I don't know if that would be the case with ALL cartridges & head shells.
richard  Jan 14, 2020
Is this tt fully auto or only auto stop? The description seems to say both. I'm confused!
zanthine  Jun 28, 2019
6 answers
It is auto stop. The most important to me.
josiah  Jun 28, 2019
It is an auto stop, when the record ends, the tone arm lifts up and the turntable stops.
william  Jun 28, 2019
The DP-400 is auto stop only. At the end of play, the arm will lift & the turntable motor will shut down. You still have to manually return the arm to the rest. You also have to manually place the arm/stylus on the record to begin play.
richard  Jun 28, 2019
Only auto stop.
joseph  Jun 28, 2019
Only autostop.
joshua  Jun 28, 2019
Semi-auto. It stops the record at the end and lifts the tone arm. You can switch the auto-stop function on and off using the switch.
sergii  Jun 28, 2019
height what is height with dust cover open?
marcelo  Apr 26, 2019
4 answers
The dust cover does not open on hinges like old days. It is a separate removable piece. As it sits on the turn table it sits a total of 5.25", as it sits on its own it is about 2.25 at the highest point. The cover is a sturdy piece of plastic and weighs about a pound. Hope this helps.
josiah  May 06, 2019
As you may know, the dust cover is not hinged. With the cover off (not open), the height is about 4" Hope that helps!
richard  May 06, 2019
the dust cover does not "open", it lifts off.
ed  May 06, 2019
The height to the top of the turntable is 3 inches, but the tone arm adds another inch, so a total of 4 inches.
william  May 06, 2019
What cartridge comes with this turntable?
kirby  Feb 06, 2019
1 answer
Not sure of the manufacturer but it is a moving magnet cartridge. I know others who have purchased this turntable have upgraded the cartridge after receiving it. I have no plans on doing that at this time as I feel the quality of playback is so much better than I had on my previous tt.
billy  Feb 06, 2019
Does it come with a cover?
steven  Feb 09, 2023
1 answer
Greetings Steven, and thank you for your question. It does include a dust cover. There is a picture of the turntable with the cover on our web presentation. Its a thumbnail picture you can click on to bring up a larger picture.
hogan  Feb 09, 2023 (Staff)
I'm learning that a replacement (additional) head-shell for this turntable can be difficult to find. can anyone suggest a compatible one, or how to find an appropriate one?
mike  Mar 25, 2022

I don't have an answer but I'd like to know it if someone else does. It's important to know if you're expecting long life from your turntable.
rex a  Mar 27, 2022
I bought an ortofan RED cartridge for mine that came pre-mounted in a new shell that was made to fit perfectly
henry  Mar 25, 2022
I am expieriencing really bad feedback with this turntable, even at low volumes?
kirby  Jan 29, 2020

I have the same table in black but no such problem. There are probably several possibilities here but isolation I would think is the first & most likely culprit. Try isolation feet under the table...or maybe foam. Separating the TT from your speakers is another possible solution. I'd start there..maybe by moving speaker or TT further apart to begin with. Good Luck!
richard  Feb 28, 2020
I have not had this situation in over one year of use. My turntable sits off by itself but is integrated into a receiver with CD player, Sirius xm unit, and cassette tape player/recorder. Speakers are located at least 18-24" above the system. Don't know if this helps
billy  Feb 27, 2020
Mine is black, not white. I have it connected to my Onkyo TX-NR838 receiver and Polk Audio surround sound speaker system. I have no issues with any part of the system preforming well. All of our vinyl is from the 60's-80's vintage.
