Features
Overview: The Escort Max 4 offers front and rear radar and laser protection. The Max 4 is GPS and Bluetooth-enabled, so you can receive alerts from other users through the Drive Smarter app as they come in. The detector comes with the magnetic EZ Mag Mount, SmartCord USB power adapter, and a zippered travel case.
Range and Detection: The Max 4 is equipped with two Low Noise Amplifiers (LNAs) and a new dual-core processor to give you superior radar detection range, exceptional processing speed, and industry-leading false alerts filtering. With twice the filtering accuracy of other models, Max 4 gives you a quieter ride with fewer false alerts, so you can stay focused on your driving. In addition, shared radar and laser alerts from users of the Drive Smarter app give you advanced warning of speed traps along your route.
GPS Technology: The Max 4 has a built-in GPS receiver, and uses GPS technology to identify and eliminate the source of false alarms, such as speed signs and automatic door openers. The GPS-powered TrueLock Filter lets you store and lock out false alerts by "marking" the location so the detector can reject the signal the next time you approach the area. The unit is also pre-loaded with the Defender database of thousands of safety camera locations, including red light and fixed photo radar sites, and will warn you when you are approaching these sites. You can update the Defender database through the Escort website, or when connected to your smartphone or connected car via Bluetooth.
Bluetooth: The Escort Max 4 is equipped with a Bluetooth chip to give you access to real-time alerts from other users through the Drive Smarter app. Software updates are also available by connecting directly to Detector Tools Pro on the Escort Radar website, and connect via the detector's USB-C port.
OLED Display: The Max 4 features a multi-color, OLED graphic display with intuitive icons that identify the type of threat at a glance. You can set the display to blue, green, red, or amber to match your vehicle's interior gauges, or to suit your personal preference. The brightness of the display can be set to Dark, Minimum, Medium, Maximum, or Auto.
In-Vehicle Technology: The Max 4 has an advanced, continuously updated filter to reduce false alerts caused by In-Vehicle Technology (IVT). In-Vehicle Technology includes Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) features in newer vehicles, such as automatic emergency braking, collision avoidance systems, blind spot monitoring, and lane departure warning systems. These advanced features use radar and LiDAR that can cause false alerts. In-Vehicle Filtering significantly cuts down on the number of false alerts.
Meter Modes: The unit offers different displays and bar graphs to indicate the signal-strength of the detected signal:
- Standard (default): Displays radar band (X, K, or Ka) detected, plus a bar graph of the front signal strength.
- Spec: Displays primary radar band detected with numeric frequency, plus front signal strength bar graph
- Expert: Displays up to four detected radar bands, plus bar graphs showing the front and rear signal strength of each detected band.
- Simple: Displays a color-coded simple message instead of radar bands or bar codes:
- Caution: "Caution" is displayed with a yellow background when an alert is received and you are traveling below your current Cruise Alert setting or the posted speed limit (when connected to the Drive Smarter app).
- Slow Down: "Slow Down" is displayed with a red background when an alert is received while you are traveling above the current Cruise Alert setting or the posted speed limit (when connected to the Drive Smarter app).
Tones: The Max 4 emits alert tones when a radar signal is received. Tones allow you to identify the type and strength without taking your eyes off the road. You can choose between Standard, Standard Plus, and Mild alert tones:
- Standard: The default Standard alert tones are a Geiger counter-type sound, indicating the signal strength and type of radar that has been received. Each band has a distinctive tone to help you identify the threat:
- X band: beep tone
- K band: brap tone
- Ka band: double-brap tone
- Laser: solid brap tone
- POP: solid brap tone
- Standard Plus: Features the Standard alert tones outlined above for primary alert, plus double-beep tones for additional alerts.
- Mild: Mild alerts are less obtrusive and simpler than the standard tones, but still distinctive for each band for easy identification:
- X band, K band, Ka band, and POP: doorbell chime
- Low signal strength: double chime
- High signal strength: triple chime
- Alert remains for more than 15 seconds: single chime reminder
- Laser: solid brap tone (always full strength)
Drive Smarter® App: You can enhance your MAX 4 experience with the new Drive Smarter® app. The app lets you share and receive radar and laser alerts, red light cameras, speed cameras, and police spotted alerts through the Drive Smarter community. You can make changes to the detector's settings through the app, as well as update its software. The app's Mayday Alert feature allows you to set up an emergency contact that you can instantly notify of an emergency. The app also tracks Incident Reports to keep up with repairs and insurance claims after an accident. Drive Smarter is compatible with iPhone and iPod touch with iOS 15.0 or later, and Android devices running Android 9.0 and up. The app now works with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, allowing you to view the display on your compatible vehicle's infotainment screen.
Escort M2 Dash Cam: The optional Escort M2 Smart Dash Camera can mount directly to the Max 4 radar detector's suction cup mount. The camera comes with a long bolt that modifies the detector's EZ Mag Mount to accept the camera's mounting bracket, allowing you to mount the two devices side-by-side. The camera also has a short cable with an RJ11 plug that connects to the Max 4 to power both devices.
Laser Shifters: The Escort Max 4 is compatible with optional Laser Shifters, such as Escort's ZR5 or ZW5, to give you maximum protection against all laser threats, including variable pulse rate. When connected to a ZR5 or ZW5 laser shifter, you can use the mute button to manually shut off Laser Shifting, once you have checked your speed. The shifters remain in "Receive Only" mode for about 30 seconds to allow you to get past the speed trap.
Detector Tools Pro: Escort's Detector Tools Pro program allows you to update your Defender database and software. The Max 4 has a USB-C port on the side to allow you to connect the unit to your computer via USB cable (not included). Detector Tools Pro supports Firmware, Location Database updates, Detector Software, and Defender Updates, and is available for Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11, as well as Mac 10.10 and up.
Earphone Jack: There is a standard 3.5mm earphone jack on the right side of the unit.
SmartCord: The supplied SmartCord includes approximately 22" of straight cord and about 7" of coiled cord, and expands to up to about 3' when stretched. The cigarette lighter adapter end includes a mute button and two LEDs (Alert and Power). The adapter has a Type A USB port (5V 2A) for powering or charging other devices.
Maestro Portable Detector Kit: The optional Maestro Portable Detector Kit lets you connect your Escort Max 4 and other compatible radar detectors to a Maestro ADSMRR2 radio interface when using a compatible Kenwood/JVC iDatalink-ready radio with CarPlay. Once connected, radar alerts will come through Kenwood/JVC sound system, and an on-screen "Escort" page will display the Band and Frequency, as well as your vehicle's speed when alerted. You can also use the radio's touchscreen to activate AutoMute, Mute, or Lockout.
AutoPower: The AutoPower feature automatically turns off the unit after a specific amount of time to reduce the current drain on the vehicle's battery. If AutoPower is off, the unit turns on or off depending on your vehicle's ignition type (constant or switched power). For constantly-powered accessory ports, you can set AutoPower to turn off the unit after 1, 2, 4, or 8 hours. With AutoPower on, the display screen goes blank if the vehicle is sitting still for over 30 minutes. It will turn on automatically again when you reach 10 mph.
EZ Mag Mount: The Max 4 radar detector comes with the new EZ Mag Mount that is designed to mount the unit on the center of the windshield between the driver and passenger. The EZ Mag Mount attaches to the detector via a strong magnet, with a large, 2-1/2" diameter StickyCup suction cup to mount to the windshield. You can adjust the angle of the detector via the provided thumbwheel.
The Escort MAX 4 replaces these items:
- In-Vehicle Technology (IVT) Filter elminates false alerts from collision avoidance systems and adaptive cruise control
- uses GPS to mark locations for future alerts and to eliminate false alarms
- built-in Bluetooth for integration with optional Drive Smarter smartphone app; preloaded database of red-light and radar cameras
