Best Nikon Sports/Action/Wildlife Camera with Caveats
Bruce from SUGAR LAND, TX on 6/12/2025
I ordered and purchased the Nikon Z9 immediately upon release. It had most of the 25 features I was looking for in a Nikon mirrorless camera as an amateur wildlife, sports and action shooter. I've now owned the camera for 3 1/2 years, and as of 2025, FW 5.2, here are my thoughts. MISSING/DOWNSIDES : Heavy body. Stickier AF, Blinkies in STILLS, Pre/Auto-capture in RAW, Global shutter (or faster SYNC speeds), Lacking internal memory for Banks Presets (must be saved to memory card). Focal length identification in the EVF (especially for zoom lenses). Subject/Eye Detection AF Assist with Manual Focus lenses, Higher resolution EVF. RGB histogram in viewfinder. Pixel-shift shooting. Nikon Rubber sealing is weak. Covers on body (left, front) poorly designed. PROS: This is, by far, the best camera I've ever used for sports, action, wildlife photography. The list of positives are just "Gi-Nor-mus". I'm going to try and describe it to those of you that haven't used a camera like this before. 1. Programmability: Nearly everything and nearly all buttons are customizable. I've modified this over time for new features and the way I shoot. It has taught me far more about what's possible than on any other camera (i.e. I use the record button in stills to quickly change AF area modes). The WYSIWYG EVF and ease of changing nearly all settings with buttons (i.e. recall shooting settings), and to be able to change from action bank to Astro (with red menus) etc is just terrific.
Pros: Accurate, quick, sticky AF, Bright EVF. HIGHLY PROGRAMMABLE: Buttons, EVF and LCD screen view. High frame rates. Pre/auto capture. Excellent rear LCD. Silent shooting. Battery life. Excellent subject detection (most of the time). VIDEO AF/Quality (who would have thought).
Cons: Weight. Weather sealing. No zebras/blinkies in stills. No RGB histogram. Unable to see focal length (i.e. for zoom lenses) in EVF display. Bright, but low resolution EVF. No internal memory of "Banks" settings (i.e. have to be saved to memory card for backup). No pixel shift shooting. low sync speed. No global shutter.
