About the Audio-Technica VM740ML

Eric A.

Stay in the groove

What makes one stylus better than another? The shape and mounting of the stylus — the tiny diamond that traces the grooves of the record — is where small changes make a big difference in sound quality. The Audio-Technica VM740ML phono cartridge features an advanced 2.2 x 0.12 mil MicroLine stylus in a durable aluminum alloy housing. It gets deep into the cut and reproduces the smallest details of the music. When you're talking about the warm, natural sound of great vinyl, that small difference can mean everything.

Features

Dual Moving Magnet Stereo Cartridge: The VM740ML MicroLine stylus cartridge is a premier 700 Series model in Audio-Technica's new VM cartridge line. Like all VM cartridges, the VM740ML is equipped with dual magnets that are positioned to match the left and right channels in the stereo record groove for outstanding channel separation and extended frequency response. The cartridge's MicroLine stylus allows it to trace the record groove with incredible accuracy, resulting in nuanced audio reproduction that elliptical and conical styli simply can't match. The stylus's multilevel shape also wears better than other styli, while reducing the wear on your records.

  • VM dual magnet cartridge with with MicroLine stylus
  • Aluminum tapered cantilever
  • Paratoroidal coils improve generating efficiency
  • Center shield plate between the left and right channels reduces crosstalk
  • Die-cast aluminum alloy housing reduces vibration and adds a natural electrical shield

Note: This cartridge is designed to fit turntables that feature a standard 1/2" mount. It is not compatible with P-Mount style turntables.

Customer Q&A

Q
Will this work with the headshell that comes with the Audio-Technica LP-120XUSB?
paul  Dec 17, 2023
1 answer
A
Absolutely, Paul. You will have to mount this Audio-Technica VM740ML to your existing headshell using the included hardware and recalibrate your tone arm tracking force and anti-skate after install. If you would like a replacement headshell to make the job even easier, you can grab one with the AT-HS1 in the link below! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_057HS1/Audio-Technica-AT-HS1.html

Q
Will this work like it should on a Toshiba SR-355?
steve  Oct 06, 2023
1 answer
A
Based on photographs of the Toshiba SR-355 found online, it appears that the turntable features a headshell that supports 1/2" mount cartridges such as the VM740ML. If the current headshell does not support 1/2", it may be possible to replace the headshell, though we do not have data to confirm this.

Q
Will this set up work on the Technics SL-230?
steve  Dec 08, 2022
1 answer
A
That is a great question, Steve. This amazing Audio-Technica VM740ML will mount to your standard Technics headshell, no problem. You can also go with the pre-mounted version in the link below and have an even easier upgrade for your turntable! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_057VM540H/Audio-Technica-VM540ML-H.html

Q
Will this stylus/cart work with a Realistic LAB-400?
robert  Aug 03, 2022
1 answer
A
This Audio-Technica VM740ML would be an excellent choice for your vintage deck Rob, but it will not directly attach to the original Realistic headshell sadly. You'll need to also grab this Audio-Technica AT-HS1 universal headshell in the link below. This will ease the physical installation of the new cart, and it will allow you to direct connect to what I refer to as the "standard" style tone arm with the removeable headshell on your Realistic. You'll of course have to re-set your tracking weight. This premium cart will breath new life into your LAB-400! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_057HS1/Audio-Technica-AT-HS1.html
