Not heavy enough

It hooked up correctly and mounted correctly. But it would not set down on the record, was not heavy enough even with the counter adjustment adjusted all the way forward.

Very well balanced sound!

In the past, I felt AT carts were a little bright for my taste (I prefer Sumiko), but for my second turntable (SL 1200 Mk2), I really like this VM95! It has the most tonally balanced (neutral) sound that I have heard, voices are rendered in the most natural way. It is punchy and lively. It does not go as deep in the bass or sound quite as refined as my Sumiko on Rega table, but it's surprisingly good for the low price, better than anything I have heard in this price range! You could gain more refinement with a more expensive stylus, but if you just want to enjoy the music without the critical listening, I recommend trying this one. This cart seems to draw me in the music instead of listening to the equipment. In fact, I'm just going to enjoy this for a while and take a vacation from being an audiophile.... I deserve this!

Great sound, easy upgrades

Brian from Oswego, IL on 2/9/2023

My A-T AT-LP3 turntable sounds way better with this eliptical cartridge than it did with the standard AT-91 conical one it came with. Even better, you can upgrade this cartridge with a microline or shibata stylus without changing the cart. It was very easy to install and set up to sound its best. Excellent starter cartridge that can be upgraded significantly by just buying a different stylus for it. Would highly recommend as a mid-level upgrade option over standard cartridges on most budget priced turntables, especially Audio-Technica.

As far as this cartridge goes, I am completely happy. It arrived in perfect condition and on time, as predicted. I must also say that it sounds wonderful on my Denon DP45F. I have had difficulty finding reference material to conduct a proper alignment of the cartridge. Some links would have been handy.

Pros: Sounds great! Basic install isn't too hard.

Cons: Detailed install information is tricky to find.

World's Okay-est Stylus

Eric from Denver, CO on 8/6/2022

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

This is a noisy stylus that came with my turntable that I bought recently, so this is not a cartridge that I would have bought on its own. Let me be clear. Moreover, I keep immaculate records, and the surface noise is grating and quite exaggerated sounding. The musical ability of this stylus I'd rate as "okay." I also am not crazy about the fact that you'll only get about 300 hours out of this thing. I'd say just save your money and get a micro-line or Shibata stylus from this VM line from AT. You won't regret those at all. Finally, I'll admit to being spoiled, however. My main stylus is an AT-VM95SH, which is hands down better by an order of magnitude, and it's what I use as a daily driver. I also have the AT-VM540ML mounted on a different head shell, which is for critical listening and the best in my collection.

Pros: Good sonic range, decent starter stylus (gateway drug), decently made

Cons: obnoxious surface noise, doesn't last long before its audio quality degrades significantly, rounded tip might make it difficult to align

Nice cartridge

Verified employee review (What's this?)

This cartridge came with the Teac TN400S turntable I purchased from Crutchfield. I think it is a solid cartridge. I am happy with it. I plan to upgrade when the cartridge wears out. Somewhere between 300 and 500 hours. I don't think it is wise for me to replace it before it's time. May as well get all the use out of it before spending any money. I will stay with Audio-Technica, just go with one that has better specs.

Pros: Sounds good. Inexpensive.

Cons: Rather generic.not bad not great.

This cartridge and stylus came supplied with my Audio Technica AT-LP120XBT-USB turntable, and I got three months' worth of use out of it before I noticed considerable left channel distortion when playing vinyl (other sources sounded just fine, so the culprit wasn't my Polk S15 speakers). I ended up upgrading this stylus to a different model. We will see if I still experience issues once I get the upgrade.

Pros: Budget stylus

Cons: Budget quality, lasted about 3 months before having to replace/upgrade

ATVM95E phono cartridge

Ben from Reno, NV on 1/17/2022

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

This cartridge provides a significant upgrade over the AT 91R which came with my AT-LP 3 turntable, at a low cost. It has an elliptical stylus, and will also allow me to make further upgrades in future by simply changing the stylus, as there are several more advanced stylii available in the AT-VM95 family. This was the first time I changed out a cartridge, but I was able to get it done without too much trouble.

Pros: Low cost Fast, free delivery

Cons: Installation can be finicky, like any cartridge change.

I need to replace my bented stylus and read some good reviews about this cartridge. Either I just replaced the existing stylus or totally replace the cartridge and went with AT route. Still in the break in process which is about 30 hrs. but as far as sound is concern, I would not say it's a night and day. Just waiting if it will sound more better after the break in period but for the price, it can be beat.

Pros: Price

Cons: A little bit intimidating installing.

Good potential but....

Frobie from Findlay, OH on 7/16/2021

Having tried this cartridge on several turntables I have found it to be okay but there is sibilance and inner groove distortion with it no matter how carefully you align it in your headshell /tonearm. I truly feel that it would be more beneficial to save your money until you can afford the upgrade AT-VM95ML cartridge. With it you will not be plagued with those issues and will enjoy a wider frequency response and better separation. You will hear greater details in your music and less background noise, too. The enjoyment you receive from listening to your records is really only as good as the cartridge and stylus you are using (and the ability to align it properly). Honestly, it's best to start with a great cartridge and work from there. Yes, there are better cartridges than the 95ML but it is a fantastic buy at the current price. I have 95ML's on both on my main turntables and never get fatigued by sibilance, distortion, etc. With the 95E I was always frustrated with the sound as the tonearm got closer to the label. I hope this helps you in your buying decision. Enjoy the wonderful, analog, sound, of records!

Pros: A decent budget cartridge

Cons: Too much sibilance and inner groove distortion. Short stylus life. Mediocre sound overall.
