About the Focal 100 ICLCR 5

Kramer Crane

Engaging overhead surround sound

We don't often recommend in-ceiling speakers for your home theater's front channels. That's because most models fire straight downward, so the sound tends to seem disconnected from your TV screen. Focal's 100 ICLCR 5 is a rare exception of an in-ceiling speaker that does a great job reproducing your home theater's front soundstage.

This speaker's angled baffle directs sound down and forward toward your listening position. It makes the movie's soundtrack feel like it's coming from the action unfolding on the screen, instead of several feet above it. This specialized design allows for use as a left-, right-, or center-channel speaker in an overhead home theater system.

Focal 100 ICLCR 5 in-ceiling home theater speaker with built-in back-box

The 100 ICLCR 5's drivers are angled to direct sound toward your seat.

Super smooth performance

This speaker employs a passive radiator design to create lifelike sound in your room. It features two of Focal's 5" Polyglass woofers for punchy bass and articulate midrange. Smooth, natural highs come courtesy of a 1" aluminum tweeter. And an 8" Polyglass passive radiator helps reinforce low-frequency "oomph."

A built-in enclosure elevates performance

One of my favorite features of the 100 ICLCR 5 is the back-box that's built onto the speaker. This carefully designed enclosure helps this speaker deliver consistently focused, well-balanced sound no matter what kind of space is behind it in your ceiling. It also keeps dust and dirt out.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The Focal 100 ICLCR5 is a two-way, in-ceiling speaker designed for home theater applications. It can be used as either a front left, right, or center channel or as a rear channel, especially in large rooms with no rear wall nearby for floor or in-wall speakers. A 3-position switch is provided that can shift the speaker's imaging depending on which location the speaker is in, with choices of Left, Right, or Center.

Design: The 100 ICLCR5 features dual 5" Polyglass cone woofers and an 8" passive radiator for deep bass response, along with a 1" aluminum inverted dome tweeter. The speaker's compact unibody and new crossover were designed to improve sound dispersion and off-axis listening, helping to avoid the "shower effect". The tweeter can be tilted up to 20˚ in any direction and includes a 3-way switch for adjusting the output level according to the acoustic environment with selections of -3dB, 0dB, and +3dB. The speaker includes a paintable, magnetic, metal-mesh grill. Small magnets around the rim of the speaker allow the grill to be easily placed and removed with no tools required. A set of spring-posts are provided for attaching speaker wire.

Installation: The Focal in-ceiling speaker includes 8 integrated mounting brackets with optimized grips. These allow the speaker to be locked into place by simply tightening the 8 Philips-head screws after placing speaker in the opening. As the screw is tightened, the arms will swing outward and press against the backside of the drywall or mounting surface. The screws remain attached to the mounting arms, even when fully loosened, preventing them from falling out and making for an easier installation. Eight 3-1/2" wood-screws are provided for mounting directly to framing. Focal also offers the 100ICLCR5 pre-construction mounting kit for installations that require more support for the speaker.

Customer Q&A

8 questions already asked

Q
Does this speaker require a hard reflective ceiling to act as a baffle as is the case with most standalone ceiling speakers? I am considering mounting in a drop ceiling, which is absorptive.
tom  Nov 25, 2022
1 answer
A
This speaker features a built-in back-box. Unlike many in-ceiling speakers, it does not use the ceiling space as baffle.
zachary  Nov 26, 2022 (Staff)
Q
What is the downward angle of the woofer and tweeters when mounted in-ceiling? Is it 30 or 45 degres?
keating  Mar 23, 2022
1 answer
A
I would say 30 degrees. But I will say they sound great and was very impressed with the angle at the sound field projects. I installed them for a family member but I am not going to change my front speakers with them in my home theater to free up space from tower speakers.
matthew  Mar 23, 2022
Q
I want to purchase 2 of these to simply play audio in one room of my house. What could be recommended to power them at 120 watts each and have Bluetooth connectivity?
nicholas  Sep 01, 2021
2 answers
A
Do a search for this model and use the focal site link. When you get to the site look at the picture on top. It shows exactly how the speakers should be oriented.
charles  Sep 03, 2021
A
I listen to mine in two channel at times and really enjoy them with the addition of my sub. My current set up is 100 watts - but very high current clean watts - and that is plenty of power. Their efficiency rate is terrific so you can't go wrong - but clean power is king with these speakers. Just my $.02.
jamie  Sep 01, 2021
Q
When installing the speakers (ICLR100 5), do they have a direction they need to placed in the ceiling? (Do I have to point a certain side the speaker to the front of the room?)
jason  Jun 06, 2021
1 answer
A
Do an online search for ICLR100 5 and click on the resulting link for the Focal site. On the top of the page there is a picture showing the orientation of the ceiling speakers.
charles  Sep 03, 2021
Q
Is it Paintable?
rory  May 19, 2021
2 answers
A
The grills are paintable and will hide the speaker behind.
john  May 20, 2021
A
I'm sure it can probably be painted, but I would not recommend since it comes with a grill. You would be better off painting the grill.
alberto  May 19, 2021
Q
Can I use this as a center channel?
rogélio  Nov 17, 2020
1 answer
A
Yes - it works amazing. I have three, left right center. Can't go wrong.
jamie  Nov 18, 2020
Q
I want all of my speakers for my surround sound to be in my ceiling. How many of these speakers will I need to accomplish this?
brody  Jul 01, 2019
2 answers
A
You will need one for each channel, I used 5 of these in my ceiling for a 5.1 setup. They sound quite nice.
matthew  Jul 01, 2019
A
I would use 3 of these for your L C R as they will angle down toward your seating area. I am very happy with the sound quality these produce. depending on your surround design, you can use straight down firing for your atmos, rear surround or surround back speakers. I employ a 7.2.4 setup. You can use these for all your surround as well. Just an expensive speaker for surround.
john  Jul 01, 2019
Q
Can the Focal 100 speaker connect directly to the tv or is a receiver still needed?
michah  Jan 04, 2019
2 answers
A
Needs a Receiver. It's not a soundbar nor does it have the capability for a stand alone operation. But, if you decide to get it you won't be disappointed with the quality. It's amazing.
john  Jan 04, 2019
A
A receiver is required.
