Product Research

Features

Overview: The Focal 300 ICLCR5 is a three-way, in-ceiling speaker designed for home theater applications. It can be used as either a front left, right, or center channel or as a rear channel speaker, especially in large rooms with no rear wall nearby for floor or in-wall speakers. The enclosure contains dual 5" Flax cone woofers, a single 4" Flax cone midrange, and a 1" aluminum/magnesium inverted dome tweeter.

Drivers: The 300 ICLCR5 features dual 5" Flax cone woofers which produce a natural and accurate sound with great intelligibility, ideal for movie dialog. The 4" Flax cone midrange and 1" aluminum/magnesium inverted dome tweeter are mounted on an adjustable plate which can be tilted left or right for focusing the sound on the listening point, depending on which location the speaker is in. The 1" tweeter includes a 3-way switch for adjusting the output level according to the acoustic environment with selections of -3dB, 0dB, and +3dB. A second 3-way switch allows the same type of adjustment for the midrange frequencies with selections of -2dB, 0dB, and +2dB. Both switches are located on the front of the speaker underneath the grill for easy adjustment.

Grill: The speaker comes with a paintable, magnetic, metal-mesh grill. Small magnets around the rim of the speaker allow the grill to be easily placed and removed with no tools required. An optional sheet of acoustic grill cloth is provided that can be applied to the back of the grill, making the speaker drivers behind it invisible. Note: Using this will lower the overall output level a small amount.

EQI Mounting: Focal incorporates their patented EQI (Easy Quick Install) mounting system which includes 5 integrated cam-arms with optimized grips. These allow the speaker to be locked into place by simply placing the cam-arms in the "ready" position and pushing the speaker assembly into the ceiling opening. As the speaker sets in place, the spring-loaded cam arms will rotate outward snapping in place against the backside of the drywall or mounting surface. Five 1" and five 1/2" spacers are provided that can clip on the cam-arms, if needed, depending on the thickness of the ceiling material. The EQI mounts will work for ceilings from 1/2" to 2" thick. Focal also offers the 300ICLCR5 pre-construction mounting kit for installations that require more support for the speaker.

Terminals: Two spring-posts are provided for attaching speaker wire and can accommodate 16 -14 AWG wire.

Q
So my wife and I bought this house with a dedicated theater room that has 5 in ceiling speakers, 3 fronts and 2 rears. I am looking for a work around the issue since in ceiling speakers aren't recommended for home theaters. Do you think replacing the 3 front channels with 3 of these will solve the problem?

I, too bought a house with in ceiling speakers- 3 across the front of a projection screen. I was unhappy with the clarity of the center channel and really was fortunate to find this Focal 300. It pretty much fit the same cutout. After I ran the calibration with my Denon, I found this speaker to be the best solution I could ask for. It has excellent throw and is very clear. Well worth it. I only did the center with this as I have two Klipsch floor standing speakers for my main left-right which is primarily for music needs. Hope this helps!

I have two of these installed in the ceiling as rear channels. The drivers are directed sideways, not down, largely working around the problem of them being mounted on the horizontal plane. They sound incredible. I think they would work well as front channels. In fact, I believe this is their intended use.

Q
Can this speaker be used for my overhead Atmos channels?
danuel  Aug 12, 2022

A
Greetings Danuel, and thank you for your question. This Focal 300 ICLCR is typically for front left, right and center channels. Typically. Its a speaker, so if you wanted to use them for rear surround, or Dolby Atmos, they are going to play rear surround or Dolby Atmos. Question would be are those drivers at the proper angle for optimum Dolby Atmos. That you might have to get straight from Focal. Their number is 888-340-4403.

Q
What is the decrease in performance of the Focal 300 IClCR5 if i have a 75 watt per channel amplifier?
gregory m.  Feb 05, 2021

A
This speaker has a high sensitivity and should only lose 3 db off its top volume level from that change.

Q
Could you use these as in wall surrounds for a bedroom? Seems like they would work well with the midrange/tweeters faced towards the center of the room / bed and the woofers facing the side walls.

A
These are designed for just that purpose. They can be used for left / right and center speakers (LCR). If they are in your price range, these are great speakers.

Q
Can this be installed as the center and use the Focal 100 ICLCR 5 for the L, R and surrounds?
christopher  Feb 01, 2020

A
I'm not a sound engineer, just a novice audiophile but i've found that yes, you can mix and match center channel and front L/R speakers and tweak them to your listening preference but many speakers are tuned to work together. If you are installing the Focal 100 ICLCR 5 for the left and right, I would recommend installing one for the center as well. I think you will be more than happy with 3 of the Focal 100's. But just in case, Cruchfield customer service is great and they can help you with any exchange or upgrade if necessary.

Q
Would this work well for just a center channel? I already have a left and right speaker but my center channel can only be installed in my ceiling

Yes, it would work perfectly. When you install it, make sure the two woofers face the wall and the midrange/tweeter is facing the audience. Amazing speaker btw. I have them installed in my kitchen (powered by the 2nd zone on my Marantz 7008), and they are clean! Not boomy, just clean.

That's exactly the same situation I had. I have large bookshelf speakers for my left and right and I installed this for my center channel. (I also have a separate sub). I'm very happy with it. You can tune it to your liking. Side note, cut the hole in the ceiling straight and exactly to the size of the template. otherwise it won't fit properly.
