About the Focal Chora 806

David Brown

It's all about the drivers

Don't think of Focal as simply a speaker manufacturer. Think of them as a team of mad scientists developing new speaker technology in a French lab. Their dedication to improving driver design allows them to continually produce outstanding speakers at a wide range of price points. The Chora 806 bookshelf speakers occupy the most affordable end of the spectrum. To hear these gems at their best, pair them with high-quality speakers stands, like these matching stands from Focal.

Focal set out to improve upon the previous Chorus lineup (of which I was quite fond), with a new woofer design resulting from their relentless R&D.

Focal's latest woofer design

The secret ingredient of the new Chora speakers is the Slatefiber woofer, made of recycled carbon fibers. Carbon fibers are very rigid — important for any speaker cone material. But they go beyond rigidity. These cones are lighter, more responsive, and have better damping than the Polyglass woofers of the previous Chorus speakers. As a result, the Chora 806s look to be better balanced (particularly in the midrange), offer better, tighter bass response, and respond beautifully to high-current power.

Trickle-down tweeter tech

For the Chora's high frequencies, Focal chose their TNF inverted dome tweeter. This design is known for a wide soundstage that's not seating-position critical. One new development in this iteration is the use of a material called Poron, which suspends the tweeter from its mount. This suspension is trickled down from the Beryllium drivers in Focal's flagship Utopia speakers. Think of it as memory foam. By maintaining its shape as the driver moves, it significantly reduces distortion for clearer sound.

Product Research

Two-Way Bookshelf Loudspeaker: The Focal Chora 806 bookshelf speaker utilizes a two-way driver design with a 1" TNF aluminum/magnesium inverted-dome tweeter and a 6.5" slatefiber cone woofer for precise and dynamic sound. It can be used in a stereo application, or as front and/or surround speakers in a home theater setup. The Chora Series bookshelf loudspeaker offers the most faithful sound reproduction, whether you are listening to a music or movie soundtrack. The Chora 806 works best in rooms measuring up to 269 sq/ft.

TNF Aluminum/Magnesium Tweeter: The Focal Chora 806 features a single 1" TNF inverted-dome tweeter made of aluminum and magnesium alloy. The inverted-dome technology allows optimal energy transfer and wide dispersion. The aluminum/magnesium makeup guarantees exception performance in terms of stiffness and damping, thus ensuring a subtle blend of softness and dynamics. Performance of the TNF tweeter is enhanced by its new Poron suspension material. Poron is a polyurethane micro-cellular foam which has a porous open-cell structure. This memory foam is very light which means that the suspension will not become damaged or compressed with time. It is an essential element of the TNF tweeter as the suspension allows the dome to move freely. Its uniform and constant physical properties ensure excellent stability and linearity, along with extreme accuracy and distortion-free sound. The result is a sound which is soft and precise and which offers improved harmonics richness and a more precise soundstage

6.5" Slatefiber Cone Woofer: Slatefiber technology, exclusive to Focal, involves the use of recycled, non-woven carbon fibers applied as a sandwich between two layers of thermoplastic polymer. In their quest for perfection, Focal engineers have opted to use non-woven carbon fibers, all pointing in the same direction to achieve even greater rigidity and better damping. Manufactured in the Focal workshops using an ultra-modern industrial tool, the "slate" effect of the cone provides better damping and rigidity, but also lightness - the three "essentials" of a good loudspeaker driver.

Bass Reflex Enclosure: The Focal Chora 806's speaker cabinet uses solid MDF construction, internal bracing, and a non-parallel inner wall structure to reduce internal resonance for less coloration. This bass reflex type cabinet uses an aerodynamic front port for greater efficiency and to reduce distortion of the bass.

Grilles: The Chora Series bookshelf loudspeaker comes with a detachable magnetic cloth grille that covers the woofer. The grille has to be aligned just right with the front of the cabinet to magnetically attach to the speaker. The tweeter features its own integrated, non-removable grille.

Binding Posts: The Focal Chora 806 is outfitted with a pair of binding post terminals that will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin connectors, spade connectors, and banana plugs (single only). You'll need to remove two plastic caps from the binding post terminals to accommodate banana plugs.

Mounting & Placement Options: The Chora 806 can be mounted on a bookshelf, on the optional Chora 806 Stand (sold separately), or on other speaker stand-mounts (sold separately - see Accessories Tab). Self-adhesive rubber feet are included to keep the speaker stable and protect your mounting surface. The rubber feet add approximately 0.0625" to the overall height of the speaker.

  • A pair of bookshelf speakers should be positioned as close to ear level height as possible when seated in your main listening position.
  • The speakers should form an equilateral triangle with one another and your main listening position.
  • The speaker performs best when its positioned away from the corner. Do not corner load the speaker.

Note: The Chora 806 does not offer a bracket, keyhole slot, or threaded insert to wall-mount the speaker.

Chora Series: Focal's Chora Series integrates speaker drivers manufactured in France and features an exclusive Slatefiber cone. Every detail of the Chora Series has been meticulously thought out to meet expectations in sound reproduction and aesthetics. The Chora Series by Focal consists of three floorstanding loudspeakers (816/826/826D), one bookshelf loudspeaker (806), a center-channel loudspeaker (Center), Surround loudspeaker (Surround - coming soon)

Optional Powered Sub: Add on a Focal powered subwoofer (sold separately - see Accessories Tab) for bigger, deep, and more dynamic bass response.

Customer Q&A

8 questions already asked

Would these be good and loud to run on SPKR B with Klipsch RP280F on SPKR A? I presently have Bose 301 on SPKR B and I can hardly hear them over the Klipsch when playing all four.
thomas  Sep 23, 2022

It would be difficult for most bookshelf size speakers to compete with large towers such as the RP-280F. For help with picking the best speakers for your application, please give our advisors a call at 1-800-324-9695.
zachary  Sep 23, 2022 (Staff)
Is there an easy way to wall mount the Focal Chora 806?
bjorn b  Jun 01, 2022
1 answer
These speakers would require a side clamping mount to hold them in place due to their size. Unfortunately at the time of writing this message, we do not have a compatible mount.

Are the Focal Chora 806 speaker cabinets wrapped in real wood veneer or is it a vinyl wrap? Also, when comparing these speakers against Wharfedale's model EVO4.1, which speaker has a better vocal sound?

It's either real wood or a very good copy: I can feel the grain. No help on the comparison, I'm afraid.
terry  Jan 27, 2022
I can answer only about the Chora 806, and I only know the material is a kind of vinyl because I read a slew of reviews. In practice, though, they are super attractive. On trend, they say. Besides, my floors are vinyl, and I love listening to vinyl. I suggest not making a decision based on that. They are really fine speakers. Pure sound, even at moderate volumes. True they aren't bassy, and for a short while, I went through FOMO (fear of missing out). But after 3 weeks of listening, I'm convinced that I'm hearing audiophile level tunes. I'm sure the Evos are nice, but I'll stick with the French ones. Cheers

Thinking of switching from Klipsch RP-4000Fs to these for front channels in my HT. Would that make for much of an upgrade? For the record, I have a pretty powerful powered subwoofer with crossover set at 80Hz.
stephen  May 01, 2021

My opinion is that the Focals would sound better, especially with a good sub. But sound is so subjective, and I do like the Klipsch RP sound (high energy). I just prefer the Focals for their cleaner and more articulate sound signature, particularly on the high end.
james  May 02, 2021
Whatâ??s the actual spec on the sensitivity? Is it 1W @ 1m or 2.83V ?
robert  Feb 05, 2021
1 answer
This sensitivity is measured using 1W at 1M method

Whats the front color for the dark wood? Is it grey or matt blue?
tj  Oct 20, 2020

I'm seeing a gray color. Like it.
timothy  Jan 27, 2022
The front of the speakers are more of a slate grey with a matte finish.

Are these good for low volume listening?
iouri  Oct 22, 2022
1 answer
These Focal speakers do work well for low volume listening. Their design with a medium level efficiency makes them ideal for this application and still getting clear audio
jason  Oct 22, 2022 (Staff)
Can you use these speakers in one room and another pair of Blue Tooth in another area of your house?
ed  Apr 21, 2020
1 answer
The Focal Chora 806 speakers are passive, and will need to be connected to an amp, integrated amp, or receiver in order to receive power. These are not Bluetooth capable, and will not communicate with additional Bluetooth or Wireless speakers in your home. Please chat with an Advisor online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695, we would be happy to go over your application, to help you find products that would work for you.
