Focal's latest woofer design

The secret ingredient of the new Chora speakers is the Slatefiber woofer, made of recycled carbon fibers. Carbon fibers are very rigid — important for any speaker cone material. But they go beyond rigidity. These cones are lighter, more responsive, and have better damping than the Polyglass woofers of the previous Chorus speakers.

The 826-D uses several Slatefiber drivers: a 6-1/2" midrange, two 6-1/2" bass drivers, plus a full-range upward-firing driver that consists of a 5-1/8" Slatefiber cone and an aluminum/magnesium dome.

Trickle-down tweeter tech

For the Chora's high frequencies, Focal chose their TNF inverted dome tweeter. This design is known for a wide soundstage that's not seating-position critical. One new development in this iteration is the use of a material called Poron, which suspends the tweeter from its mount. This suspension is trickled down from the Beryllium drivers in Focal's flagship Utopia speakers. Think of it as memory foam. By maintaining its shape as the driver moves, it significantly reduces distortion for clearer sound.

Gorgeous lean-back cabinet

Time alignment is a fancy way of saying that the sound from each front-firing driver should hit your ears at the same time. That's why the 826-D's cabinet is angled, for sound that's accurate and locked in. The speaker is available in three beautiful finishes that will make a statement before you even turn on your amp.

Features

Dolby Atmos Enabled: The Focal Chora 826D is a Dolby Atmos enabled floorstanding loudpseaker with horizontal and vertical channels. In addition to its speaker drivers in the front panel (horizontal channels), it incorporates a speaker driver on the top (vertical channel) which reflects the sound around the entire listening room. The full-range 5" driver located on the top of the speaker consists of a Slatefiber cone woofer and aluminum/magnesium dome tweeter that uses sound wave reflection on the ceiling to reproduce the Dolby Atmos effect. Its highly directional baffle also allows you to accurately locate Dolby Atmos effects, as though you had loudspeakers built into the ceiling. This technology isolates each sound from the original soundtrack and mix, like an independent audio object, for the most detailed sound reproduction. Combining front channels and vertical dimension, it immerses you in a three-dimensional home cinema experience.

3-Way Floorstanding Loudspeaker: The Focal Chora 826D floorstanding speaker utilizes a 3-way driver design with a 1" TNF aluminum/magnesium inverted-dome tweeter, a dedicated 6.5" slatefiber cone midrange driver, and two 6.5" slatefiber cone woofers for smooth highs, balanced and precise midrange, and perfectly articulated bass. The Chora Series floorstanding loudspeaker offers the most faithful sound reproduction, whether you are listening to a music or movie soundtrack. The Chora 826D works best in rooms measuring over 323 sq/ft.

TNF Aluminum/Magnesium Tweeter: The Focal Chora 826D features a single 1" TNF inverted-dome tweeter made of aluminum and magnesium alloy. The inverted-dome technology allows optimal energy transfer and wide dispersion. The aluminum/magnesium makeup guarantees exception performance in terms of stiffness and damping, thus ensuring a subtle blend of softness and dynamics. Performance of the TNF tweeter is enhanced by its new Poron suspension material. Poron is a polyurethane micro-cellular foam which has a porous open-cell structure. This memory foam is very light which means that the suspension will not become damaged or compressed with time. It is an essential element of the TNF tweeter as the suspension allows the dome to move freely. Its uniform and constant physical properties ensure excellent stability and linearity, along with extreme accuracy and distortion-free sound. The result is a sound which is soft and precise and which offers improved harmonics richness and a more precise soundstage

6.5" Slatefiber Cone Technology: The Chora 826D uses Slatefiber cone technology in its midrange driver and woofers. Slatefiber technology, exclusive to Focal, involves the use of recycled, non-woven carbon fibers applied as a sandwich between two layers of thermoplastic polymer. In their quest for perfection, Focal engineers have opted to use non-woven carbon fibers, all pointing in the same direction to achieve even greater rigidity and better damping. Manufactured in the Focal workshops using an ultra-modern industrial tool, the "slate" effect of the cone provides better damping and rigidity, but also lightness - the three "essentials" of a good loudspeaker driver.

Bass Reflex Enclosure: The Focal Chora 826D's speaker cabinet uses solid MDF construction, internal bracing, and a non-parallel inner wall structure to reduce internal resonance for less coloration. This bass reflex type cabinet uses an aerodynamic front port for greater efficiency and to reduce distortion of the bass.

Grilles: The Chora Series floorstanding loudspeaker comes with two detachable magnetic cloth grilles. The larger grille covers the woofers and midrange driver, while the smaller grille cover the Dolby Atmos driver. The grilles need to be aligned just right with the cabinet to magnetically attach to the speaker. The tweeter features its own integrated, non-removable grille.

Binding Posts: The Focal Chora 826D is outfitted with two pair of binding post terminals that will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin connectors, spade connectors, and banana plugs (single only). The lower binding posts are for the speaker's main front-firing drivers, while the upper binding post are for the speaker's top-firing (Dolby Atmos) driver. The upper binding posts for the top-firing driver need to be connected to your AV receiver's Height or Elevation speaker outputs.

Note: You'll need to remove two plastic caps from the binding post terminals to accommodate banana plugs.

Tilted Based with Rubber or Spike Feet: The Focal Chora 826D comes with a tilted base that provides proprer time alignment for optimal soundstage imaging that is more focused on the listener. It also includes spike feet for carpeted floors; as well as rubber feet for hardwood, ceramic, laminate, and vinyl flooring. The base and feet have to be installed.

  • Dimensions With Rubber Feet: 12.0" (w) x 41.6875" (h) x 16.5"
  • Dimensions With Spike Feet: 12.0" (w) x 42.0625" (h) x 16.5"

Note: The plinth and feet should always be used for proper time alignment, optimum sound quality, and maximum stability.

Applications & Placement: The Chora 826D can be used in a stereo application, or as front and/or surround speakers in a home theater setup.

  • A pair of floorstanding speakers should form an equilateral triangle with one another and your main listening position.
  • The speaker performs best when its positioned away from the corner. Do not corner load the speaker.

Chora Series: Focal's Chora Series integrates speaker drivers manufactured in France and features an exclusive Slatefiber cone. Every detail of the Chora Series has been meticulously thought out to meet expectations in sound reproduction and aesthetics. The Chora Series by Focal consists of three floorstanding loudspeakers (816/826/826D), one bookshelf loudspeaker (806), a center-channel loudspeaker (Center), Surround loudspeaker (Surround - coming soon)

Optional Powered Sub: Add on a Focal powered subwoofer (sold separately - see Accessories Tab) for bigger, deep, and more dynamic bass response.

Customer Q&A

1 question already asked

Q
Ok, so, even in the user's manual there is no mention of the input power range for the top Atmos speakers. They have different posts out back, and I've read that the Atmos driver is completely isolated electrically from the main drivers, so...how much power can it take? Is 130wattsRMS for the Atmos from my Onkyo TX-RZ820 ok?

Greetings Frank, and thank you for your question. The RMS power handling for the Atmos toppers is not listed anywhere. I reached out to Focal, and they said 60 watts is the recommended RMS power. Your receiver like all A/V receivers lists the rated power with 2 channels driven. What that means is if you only have two speakers connected and running off the receivers amp, those two get the rated power. What is not listed is what each channel gets when all channels are driven. What I can say is surrounds, Atmos channels do not get as much. On another note they are not getting as much low frequencies. If I were to take a good guess, the Atmos channels are putting out 70-80 watts, and without much bass would be just fine for the Chora 826 D Atmos top firing speakers.
