Good Apple Carplay Headunit

Good simple Apple CarPlay radio. Could use a few more software control over certain items but overall works well and sounds better than most stock head units. Backup camera looks decent and all features I use have worked with no lag or issues.

Stereo is great. Metra dash kit is not so great.
Jon from Pittsburgh, PA on 9/17/2023
I installed this in my 2005 Honda Element EX. The stereo unit itself and Crutchfield's customized wiring harness service are both great, in ways addressed well in other reviews. My only quibble is that the deep frame around the included Metra dash mounting kit impedes access to the volume knob and USB/SD/Aux ports, making it, in my opinion, completely inappropriate for this stereo model. I ended up throwing it away, and instead slightly modified the mounting brackets from the original factory stereo. This results in a ~3mm gap between the stereo face and surrounding plastic trim, but that's an imperfection I can live with.
Pros: For the stereo, none.
Cons: Metra dash mounting kit inappropriate for this model.

No Wireless CarPlay
Kai from Logan, UT on 9/16/2023
2016 Subaru Crosstrek
CarPlay is not wireless you have to connect it via the USB cable that is on the back of the radio with no way of connecting to that to USB port exposed in your car. The front of the stereo has a USB port but that one does not work with CarPlay. So once installed there is no way to connect to CarPlay. The stereo imposes a warning at the top of the screen that says "check your surroundings" in a yellow window that take over 1/4 of the top of your screen when viewing your rear view camera. the pictures in the instructions manual of the size of the radio compared to the brackets is way off.
Pros: None
Cons: Giant waist of time

My project car is over 20 years old and needed some much needed updating for the sound system. This headunit was on sale with the installation kit. Even though I wasn't feeling well, I was able to solder all the wires per their instructions and install it in an afternoon without any problems! My car now has Bluetooth and car play capabilities that not even my daily driver has. Definitely worth the price and looking forward to using this on the road very soon!
Pros: Bluetooth Apple car play Easy to wire Connected to my phone without issue Works with the Mach 460 stereo system from ford
Cons: Cannot be used while driving. Have to be in park / parking brake on.

Good fit, fully functional for my Element
Crutchfield customer from ELLENSBURG, WA on 8/21/2023
2005 Honda Element
Install on our '05 Honda Element took us about two days (in all). Fit snug, no problems. I used the guides provided and they were helpful. So far, it's been about two weeks and no issues. I like that it gives me hands free calls. The only issue is the USB to connect to my iPhones Apple Car pLay, I wish it would just connect via Bluetooth, but i can't seem to get that to happen. The cord, as well, is a tad obnoxious and I am going to have to figure out a way to keep it out of my way. Other than that, it seems to be working just fine. It's connected to the subwoofer and all. I have no issue with the sound it puts out, but, hey my Element is just the dog hauler so it doesn't need great sound when playing the music, my windows are always open and the E isn't known for a quiet ride anyhow. Would recommend to anyone with a Honda Element.
Pros: Pretty easy to install, once I figured it all out. Looks good and price point can't be beat for an older car. Right on budget.
Cons: Won't connect to my iPhone bluetooth for airplay, it will for calls though.

Boss BE62CP
Eric from BATON ROUGE, LA on 8/21/2023
2003 Jeep Wrangler
The good: Based on the reviews I thought I'd take a chance on this instead of purchasing a name brand unit since it is installed in an older Jeep without a top and didn't want something that would likely be stolen. Installation was pretty straightforward but had to make some slight modifications to the dash kit to get it to fit flush. I was a car stereo installer for 10 years and was use to making these types of modification and only took about 10 extra minutes. This unit is far from being considered high fidelity but you can hear the music clearly which is expected for the price point. Everything was fine although the connection to Apple CarPlay takes a bit to connect sometime a minute or two. I added a wireless CarPlay adapter after a few weeks which plugs into the end of the USB and that takes even longer to connect. The bad: Unit worked fine for a couple months and then would lose memory (stations/time) and return to default settings every time the car was shutoff with constant power verified as being supplied. Unit also started to randomly decide to connect to CarPlay or not typically only connecting when first started for the day but not when unit was only shutoff for a few minutes. The whole reason I purchased this unit was to support CarPlay and this issue basically makes the unit worthless. Having to reset all your setting every time you turn off your car is beyond frustrating and it's not worth the hassle even if this unit was provided free.
Pros: Cost, CarPlay
Cons: Short usable life, CarPlay works inconsistently, stops remembering settings and returns to default setting after turning off

Screen Sensivity is good
Jarrett from Quitman, GA on 8/18/2023

The screen is responsive and fast, no lag when navigating and you don't have to press hard to navigate. The sensitivity is like a phone. The music tuning part is to advanced for me so I haven't even gotten into it yet, but it looks like you can do a lot of tuning with it. I also got the wiring service for the harness and it works great. I have no complaints.
Pros: Simple to use the basic stuff and easy to navigate
Cons: The music tuning part might be intimidating for new people in tuning music

I got the Boss BE62CP for my fiancé for his birthday and it is amazing! He has been complaining about how his car is old and doesn't let him play music from his phone so I decided to get this for him and he loves it so much! It was super easy to install (he got it installed in about 2-3 hours) and uses it every car ride now! So glad I bought a reliable replacement radio from Crutchfield for a bigger price rather than a $50 one off of the big online retailer that would most likely break after 2 weeks.
Pros: super easy to install and works amazingly!
Cons: makes a lot of beeps when you push buttons but it's not annoying just a weird choice :-)

Goodbye Bose in '05 Miata
Rip from Morristown, NJ on 7/9/2023
2005 Mazda Miata
I installed this in my 2005 Miata (NB), replacing the Bose factory unit. I paired this with some Focal RSE-165 component speakers, a Pioneer TX-WX010A powered subwoofer, and a Kenwood KAC-M3004 compact amp (600W, 4ch). My HU priorities were: Bluetooth, CarPlay, some "permanent" storage for music (SD, USB, etc), radio, and capacitive touchscreen. And a volume knob (I don't have the patience for up/down buttons) I didn't have space to waste in the Miata, so the small sub went behind the passenger seat (only lost ~ 1" of seat clearance) , and the amp went in the tunnel between the passenger cabin and the trunk. This was super easy to get power from battery in the trunk and also to run wires into the cabin and along the transmission tunnel to the head unit. Very happy with the installation, and the audio quality with this setup.
Pros: Sounds great when playing from Bluetooth, Carplay, and SD card. Screen is responsive, and easy to see, even with the top down. Installation was straighforward once I figured out how to bypass the Bose amp and reuse the door speaker wiring.
Cons: The radio reception is quite a bit weaker than the 18 yr old Bose. The SD card is limited to 32GB, and it won't accept M4A files (AAC format MPEG4 that I play from SD in my '17 Golf ).

Good replacement for 2013 Jetta so far
Kamyar from Bellingham, WA on 7/9/2023
2012 Volkswagen Jetta
Installed in 2013 VW Jetta 2.5 SE. We paid to have all the wires connected with packaged accessories, which helped tremendously. Highly recommend that to save on time. It was easy to remove old receiver and install this one. We paired with new backup camera, which made install take longer. Would have been much easier with out camera. Overall happy. Apple Car Play is great. We added a USB dash extension and made a hole in center console for this. Gets the wire out of the way but easily accessible for Car Play plug in. Screen is clear, audio good. Stock receiver had another Antenna Wire, Green, which I believe is for Satellite radio. This doesn't plug into the Boss Receiver, so I assume we just lose that function, but had no plans to use it. We purchase accessories to retain steering wheel functions. It only keeps skip/next and volume, not the answer functions for phone which is a tad lame.
Pros: Easy install, looks good and decent functions for cost
Cons: loss of steering wheel phone pick up and voice command, if using reverse cam, guidelines don't turn with wheel.

Mostly Solid Aftermarket Head Unit Despite Minor Quirks
mohit from ISSAQUAH, WA on 6/12/2023
2014 Subaru Outback
Minor issues aside, I'm satisfied with this purchase, just not quite 5-star satisfied, hence 4 stars. 1. One downside is that the head unit does not retain CarPlay volume settings between uses, unlike the factory JBL system in my Toyota Highlander. Each time I connect my iPhone, I have to manually adjust the volume levels on the first navigation and voice prompts. Otherwise, the volume is too soft. It would be more convenient if the head unit could remember my preferred volume levels for CarPlay functions like the navigation and phone calls. 2. The Maestro RR unit Crutchfield recommended to retain my steering wheel controls did not list this specific Boss head unit model, the BE62CP. I had to choose a similar model, the BE7ACP, as an alternative. However, one of the steering wheel buttons (the Seek+ button) does not work properly with this unit. Instead of seeking to the next song, it triggers the home button function.

Great wired CarPlay system for low cost
Charles from New Hope, PA on 6/12/2023
2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
This is a great stereo for the money. It has WIRED carplay. We put this in my daughters wrangler (2012, it had the factory navigation system, but the screen was going). The CarPlay is great. I have a 23 bronco factory system, a 22 911 factory system (both wireless) and an 18 E63s mercedes with wired CarPlay. This system is better than the 18 mercedes. The microphone is great with noise cancelling (in old jeep system, it sounded like my daughter was in a tornado). I would say the only downside is that the phone microphone makes voices sound "tinny" (as in limited frequency spectrum). We kept the infinity amp and sub and replaced the dash and roll bar speakers (sound ordinance and mtx). They are good. Maybe too good for the cheap plastic jeep dash. It causes dash to vibrate (which new bronco does with factory B&O stereo out of subwoofer). We just turned down bass to speakers and they are much more clear than original and bass is with settings turned down. I think the roll bar infinity speakers sounded terrible (they are just the mid woofers I believe). The MTX's made a marked improvement - night and day. The boss system is a great value for money. We were looking for an inexpensive all around replacement with CarPlay. This exceeded expectations. If you are looking for high end screen and graphics and wireless CarPlay. look elsewhere. If you want a responsive wired CarPlay system for a low price. this is very good.
Pros: CarPlay works great. Very versatile for the price point. Fits in double din spots and is not overly flashy. Has a volume knob. What it does it does well. Remember, it's a budget system.
Cons: Screen resolution and clarity is fine, but not the best if you want that. No wireless CarPlay. Wireless microphone limited, but has effective noise cancelling. This is a budget system.

Make sure you order the plug n play harness with the connectors already assembled. Install was a breeze. The controls on the steering wheel also work. I was concerned about losing my steering wheel controls but everything works. I like the volume control knob. The ports in the small door on left front are not for apple car play. That is a separate remote usb port. This unit does everything I want. Does not come with backup camera but has the port to add later. Great performance for this price point.

2002 Ford Econoline
A less than overwhelming experience installing and using this unit. Looks nice and sound is ok. Display is adequate. Installed in a Ford Econoline RV (Ford van cab) GRANTED - Ford did us no favors with the slightly less than double DIN space. You have to carve away some of the dash. That said, Crutchfield support seemed clueless on how much of the dash I had to cut away. I eventually figured it our on my own. I know tons of these Econolines are out there and installing new stereos...should be an SOP. THREE calls later it has been installed - disappointed that CARPLAY ( a major reason for my purchase) is only available in the REAR of the unit - NOT the front USB which would be way to handy - and I am NOT drilling any holes in the dash - but if I change my mind I am screwed - once this kit is installed you have to pull the whole dash to get to it. The installation kit and wiring adapter were very helpful. I already have a large backup camera screen so those features weren't a plus for me. Bottom line - you get slightly less than what you pay for. And don't believe all that about the excellent installation support- it's good, not 5 stars.
Pros: Reasonable stereo and display for the price, Bluetooth works well.
Cons: CARPLAY only available at the back of the unit? Seriously?

I was pretty excited when I ordered this product. I liked that it had a volume knob and the price was great. After installing I was pretty happy with it. It was easy to use, and everything was working nicely. After a week, I started having issues with bluetooth disconnecting randomly. Once the bluetooth would disconnect, I couldn't get my phone to reconnect unless I restarted the vehicle. I looked at the manual, and it said the unit could be reset using something small to poke in on the front right corner. If I could have just held down one of the larger buttons to reset the unit, I would have been more willing to overlook this issue. I ended up returning the unit and Crutchfield's customer service was excellent.
Pros: Price Volume Knob
Cons: Bluetooth connectivity issues.

Works great in 2014 Sierra 1500. Been installed for a week now and i have no complaints. The screen isnt as nice looking as the (much more expensive)Pioneer in my car, but this is still miles better than the stock GM radios Also, you don't need the $100 wiring harness... i was able to connect mine by finding a wiring diagram online and wiring in the speakers, constant & switch 12v, and ground wires with butt connectors
Pros: Has a volume knob! also easy to install, easy to use, cheap

2004 Subie Forester XT- trim piece not required. Really impressed with the quality of this unit for the price! Mind you I got it on sale. I was really looking for something that had a volume knob, touchscreen, and Apple CarPlay. Wireless CarPlay was not the most essential for me, and this one still does it when you plug your iPhone in. Great BT audio and hands free calling. Only downside is the touchscreen is not super responsive or precise, but I expected that for the price. It is still a great touch screen.

The review is more for customer service than the radio, but the radio works fine. Installed some old speaker i had purchased from Crutchfield for a different car that we no longer own. This radio replaced an Honda Fit 2015 factory radio. We were looking for the apple car play feature and most of the features works ok. However, the lane camera feature was lost because this radio does not have the capability to manage it. Also picture quality of rear camera is poor as well as the general picture quality (as compared to the factory radio). Sounds quality is good and technical support from Crutchfield was awesome during this process. I think I will have to buy another radio to fulfill picture quality and factory's setting integration with the new system.

Great replacement to the factory unit!
Hugo from Lancaster, CA on 12/27/2022
2003 Nissan Maxima
Great unit that is an outstanding replacement of the stock unit for our son's vehicle. He never uses tape or CD, only his phone through Bluetooth, and USB connection. This unit has a USB port in the front for USB sticks and a USB cable from the back that allows him to use the Apple CarPlay feature. When his iPhone is plugged in, the display shows the audio track that is playing but also displays the map, a very nice feature! Of course, this could be a standard feature with Apple CarPlay, but being used to the factory unit, It was a very pleasant surprise!
Pros: All the features, including both AM and FM radio and a volume knob is a nice plus! The unit has both Bluetooth as well as Apple CarPlay through USB, providing much more integration with the iPhone features and map. Would definitely recommend for iPhone users! And not a comment on the radio, but on the Crutchfield support after the sale. Outstanding! Very helpful and the installation guides they sent were invaluable. Would not have been successful if I had purchased in pieces through Ama
Cons: No 'cons'. We love the product, experience, and Company!

Decent but has some flaws
Kelley from San diego, CA on 12/17/2022
2013 Toyota Prius
So far so good. Install was decently easy. Steering wheel controls don't work but I've yet to troubleshoot it. Crutchfeild says to do some recalibration process for on page 4 of the owners manual but I cannot find that in any manual. I have a 2013 Prius. The plastic mounting hardware is too small for the head unit. So when attaching it felt like it was going to break and the plastic bends. So it is not flush with the dash. But overall works very well so far. Connected right up to the stock back up cam and image quality now much better. My Prius doesn't have a usb slot so I had to run the apple at play usb wire out the back to the front so I could connect. The mic does not work. Tomorrow I'm going to take off dash again and unplug mic and see if the built in mic works. Or if it has one. We will see. I'd say it's a little overpriced but I'm decently happy with it.
Pros: Not too hard to install.
Cons: Plastic housing is to small so it's not flush with dash. Mic does not work. Steering wheel controls don't work

Nice display. Looks good in the Toyota FJ Cruiser. Unfortunately, mic doesn't work well and CarPlay works horribly. Podcasts, navigation prompts and music seldomly plays over the car speakers. Replaced factory nav head unit in an 08 Escalade. Kids car, so it HAS to have CarPlay. Doesn't play too well with the factory speakers as some songs played at what I'd consider loud will distort the mids bad no matter what you do with the eq. So far I've lost one tweeter and one mid. Otherwise, it's got an actual volume knob, which is awesome and overall value for cost is good.
Pros: Cheap yet has enough features
Cons: Doesn't mesh well with factory bose amp/speakers

2008 Subaru Impreza
The build quality is seemingly good. The screen is responsive, and the volume wheel is slightly tactile and nice to turn. It connects to my phone automatically, and I have had absolutely no issues with getting it to play music. The EQ mixing is alright, though I'm not an audio engineer so I have no idea what I'm doing lol. The presets seem to work well enough, and I like the option to customize it. I do wish I could change the intro video when you fire up your car though. It'd be cool to make it display the badge of your vehicle. Installation was a breeze, and the bevel it comes with comes off easily. Definitely a solid radio for the price
Pros: Volume wheel, apple car play, Bluetooth, EQ mixing
Cons: No CD Drive, not much on the customizable side for the UI

I can sum up my review in two words, "LOVE IT". I had a Kenwood unit in my 2003 GMC truck. I hated it from the first day. There was no logic in trying to operate or program it. The Boss BE62CP is so easy to use it blew me away. Sound is awesome as well as the numerous sources from which it plays. The installation was a snap too. I called customer support once since the install was going so well, I thought I may have missed a trick to two. Jack answered my call and within a couple seconds, without any additional information other than my name, was asking whether I was calling about the receiver or the new speakers. Jack assured me that all I needed to do was to plug and play, Crutchfield had done all the wire matching to assure a smooth install. Do not hesitate to order this Boss unit and make sure you get it from Crutchfield!

CarPlay works if you don't ever make phone calls
Matt from Chicago, IL on 7/22/2022
2008 Honda Odyssey
I installed the receiver without any problems. It powers on nicely, picks up FM stations well, and plays media through the iPhone as intended. The problem is with making phone calls using CarPlay. There is a TERRIBLE echo for the user on the other end of the phone call. I am not sure if the microphone is faulty or it is the version of CarPlay installed on the receiver, but there is nothing that can be done to fix it. I reached out of Customer Support at Boss and they were less than helpful. I was sent a link to a random website that offered "fixes" for the echoing problem some users have. These fixes blame the Lightning cable, poor cellular data, or require to turn off data while making a phone call. Also, those "fixes" are for old versions of iOS and old devices. Modern iPhones utilize 5G and rarely ever use LTE in most areas. And turning on "Data only" wouldn't allow the phone to access any cellular data while talking on the phone, which is ridiculous as the phone needs data for CarPlay to function as it should. This is definitely not acceptable as a solution and is a problem with Boss devices, not iOS nor the phone as the same phone and version of iOS work perfectly with multiple other CarPlay-capable receivers. I will 100% be returning the receiver as it is faulty from the factory. But if you don't care about those things, go right ahead and order the least expensive CarPlay-enabled receiver. There is a reason that this unit costs this much.
Pros: It plays media via the phone It lets you listen to AM & FM stations
Cons: ECHO.. echo... echo... during phone calls via CarPlay

Customer service was extremely helpful when I called because they sent the wrong antenna adapter for the radio. Wish it had android auto too, but for the price it so far seems like a quality radio.

A good radio that was fairly easy to install with the correct harness. With that said, I do feel the cost is worth wireless carplay, rather than the wired carplay it is equipped with. The stereo itself works well and it does everything as advertised.

Wrong information and product
Philip from Franklin Sq, NY on 5/30/2022
The radio may be good but when you speak to a representative and ask for them to make up a harness to have a plug and play radio. It claims to be a car play. When I plug a usb on the radio that is made with a usb outlet built into the radio. But that didn't work. So I have no steering wheel control or usb plug and play. Now I have to drill a hole in my dashboard to get car play. Now I have no radio at all since the tech told me I had to splice into the oem connector. They don't send any wiring information in the box when it came. Not for nothing spending 10 hrs. In a car under a dashboard in 90 degree weather I should get that $350.00 gift card hands down. But I am sure this company would not do that. They gave me the harness they screwed up go nothing.
Pros: None at present
Cons: Everything about this purchase

I had high expectations and this exceeded them honestly. I really wanted the Carplay experience I'm used to in another one of my vehicles and got exactly that and more in terms of the additional features and customization of the radio itself. Audio experience is improved over the stock radio and everything works perfect.
