Verified employee review (What's this?)

The head unit itself will become glitchy randomly. Sometimes it will freeze up, other times you try to turn it up and it changes the station, or will just randomly change from FM to AM. The larger concern is that it seems to randomly drain the vehicles battery every 3-6 months or so. We have also had an issue with the vehicle not wanting to crank until I pull the fuse for the radio, then everything acts as it should. Very odd, and I am not even sure it is the fault of the head unit, but it did start after it was installed and pulling the fuse fixes the issue. Overall it works decently, when it is working, but it is annoying to never know if it will work properly or not.

Pros:

Cons: Glitchy and unreliable.

Old vehicle modernized

Very nice unit that basically fit right in my 2000 F350 crew cab. Was tired of no modern conveniences like bluetooth and Android Auto etc. I did have to call support as there was some missing information that only they knew, but once we talked, I finished right up. That information is that the factory bezel front needs to be removed so the mounts work correctly. Just 4 little built in clips to remove. I bought their cabling only because I am now old and have macular degeration and seeing to wire would be hard. The "back" usb comes with a pair of cables which was a pleasant surprise. Tho not ready to put cam in yet I plan on one, so extended that cable since it cannot be removed easily once installed. Haven't driven around in it yet, it is our RV hauler, but next trip will be much more pleasant with the ability to use our phones and such.

Pros: Cables for USB, long cable for microphone. Minimal tools to install. Minimal dash modification (A file is adequate). Option for prewired connection was nice.

Cons: Include a bit about having to remove the bezel to make things work.

I got my stereo less than a year ago and i've had many problems. First thing is the system will freeze when i turn the car on and i have to restart my car to get it to work. Sometimes the audio doesn't work and i have to restart my car again. The display is very dark even though i have it on the highest light setting. This might not be the stereos fault but I lost almost all my bass in my speakers when I changed from my stock stereo to this one. My apple carplay will randomly freeze and kick me off the apple carplay setting.

Upgraded a working original 6 CD changer stereo in a 2008 Honda ridgeline. I chose the Boss system, as it had all the features I desired and I had installed a similar Boss double din stereo in a 2005 Hyundai several months earlier; am very happy . Stereo install fit perfectly and functioned as expected. Crutchfield's supplied instructions were a great help as well.

Pros: Easy integration and install into a 14 year vehicle. Steering wheel controls worked without a hitch.

Cons: Vehicles original sub woofer not supported.

Verified employee review (What's this?)

Very happy for what it is. I needed something that wasn't going to break the bank and in my 06 Ram I knew it would need modifications so it was bound to be a PITA. Sure enough, we were NOT going to be able to do this at home ?? and had to find someone to install it. Honestly, I talked to many shops that refused to install it because they said these "Boss ones are junk" and a pain. So, that being said, I use it in my dodge and the reason I got it was that it had car play AND CD capacity since you know, Spotify sometimes fails us.. And usually on long hauls when I need music. So for me , in my not everyday driver, I think it's awesome. Love being able to have Waze show up on the screen. I've had it installed for a couple months now and (knocks on wood) so far so good.

Pros: Has CarPlay Easy connection (USB) Still has CD port Affordable

Cons: Volume always defaults low on startup Can't change volume from phone device Can't shut rainbow lights off Takes a while to switch between radio/Bluetooth/cd Hard to change radio channels Hard to install

2007 Honda Civic

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

I am trying to leave the sound quality issues out of this review as that has more to do with the integration harness than this head unit. Overall, it "has" all of the advertised features, but even then, I found myself disappointed with this unit. 1. Screen is disappointing to look at if its sunny outside. Depending on the angle its difficult or just so washed out it looks very cheap 2. Unit is so deep, once you put their monstrosity of harness behind it, a maestro module, and have the RCA plugs hanging out the back you're in for a challenge to not feel like you're just crushing and jamming a bunch of wires behind this thing praying it will "click" into the dash 3. Honestly the settings menu seemed pretty lackluster, didn't feel like a lot of options for customization 4. The touchscreen feels a bit laggy, in carplay mode or just moving around the menus, if you're used to something like an iPad you're going to feel like you're using some sort of knock-off product when you interact with this. 5. when you are in carplay mode there is no straightforward way to "leave" this mode. I can't find a "home" button or an easy way to exit back to the top menu All in all, I have a 5 month old baby, it took me a while to getting around to installing this. I am past the 60 days probably by only a few days and I can't return it (Because, life) which sucks because I probably would. Due to provided harness issues sound quality is worse than stock.

Pros: All of the advertised features "work" and are present

Cons: Wasn't able to get a setup that sounded better than "stock"

Adequate stereo. Interface is kind of weird and the screen is unbearably dim in direct sunlight. I've had a couple occasions where it didn't start up correctly and all I got was a green screen so I had to shut off the car and start it up again to reset the stereo. When it works, and its not a sunny day, it works fine but its definitely nothing special.

The Install Went Swimmingly

I did this job myself. I'm a retired aircraft mechanic. Doing this install didn't scare me none. After [solder] wiring the interface wire harness to the radio harness, it worked just as advertised. Then I just had to add a washer at the top of the bracket so it would sit flush to the radio bezel and looks professionally done.

Pros: >Everything worked correctly first time when plugged in. >Looks like it belongs there. >Tech support was prompt and the techs were knowledgeable, calm, not in a rush, and very helpful.

Cons: The only thing that was a little confusing was the "Aftermarket Radio Connections" chart. I'm used to wiring diagrams. I did make a few phone calls to tech support and they helped me sort it all out.

A very good radio, but definitely not perfect. I picked this radio because the USB hookups are behind the radio, so I could route my wires so they wouldnt be seen, but instead of USB ports (like I was hoping for) this unit has CORDS. Not a huge deal, except that it made my install a little more difficult since I had to mush that much more wiring behind the radio. It is nice that there is apple car play and also Android auto, and I love that I have a equalizer that lets me fine tune to my preferences. You can plug into a backup camera and/or front camera, but neither are included (at this price point, it would be really nice). I should also add that the wiring and all of the cords are well labeled, making install that much easier for you. My last complaint (which may seem minor to some) is that the home screen cannot be changed. This is really annoying to me, since I specifically paid more hoping that would mean better customization. Don't have a backup camera? Too bad, the button for it will always be on the screen. Never use apple car play? Sucks to be you, it will always be one of the biggest icons. This is really frustrating to me and I wish I had known that before I bought the unit. All of that being said, it is still a good receiver with some great features

Pros: Apple car play Android auto USB plugs into the back Touch screen is responsive All cords are well labeled

Cons: No screen customization Wires for usb, mic, etc. which means you may fight the radio while installing

Vehicle Installed in: Toyota Corolla 2013 Model. Rears Speakers: JBL 9631F Fronts: Kicker 43DSC6704 Overview: Install went great, I even had my 2 girls (9 & 10) help me with the install as they like music. Looked stock or professionally installed once completed so that was certainly a nice thing. Now to the Pro's & Con's. Pro's: Onboard AMP has enough power for most basic installs, especially these speakers. Cons: 1. Unit still has an issue with staying on Channel, after a couple seconds the head unit will change channels. 2. After roughly 6 Months the head unit overheats and starts acting funny. The car will need to be powered off and then on forcing me to pull over to the side of the road t get my radio and Android Carplay to work. 3. Microphone sometimes makes me sound distant even though I have the microphone connected where the old microphone is in the car. Not 100% as I am still testing but - Disconnects my new Samsung S21 5G phone at random times. Unit doesn't need to be hot, tried many cables and still happens. I am making sure it's not the phone so don't give this one a lot of weight but certainly something to think about. Conclusion: Over all I would consider this unit in an old car but this is my first Boss unit and so far it has not impressed me enough to consider buying another one for other vehicles or even consider recommending it. Features were a great addition

Pros: Read Review

Cons: Read Review

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

tldr; Had a few minor issues with the install in my 2018 Civic Sport Hatch, and a couple of blown fuses. It's a decent upgrade! Would not power up after install so I replaced the audio fuse under the hood, still would not fully function, had to also replace the accessory fuse inside the car. Both of these things were my own fault for having some wires crossed. After re-reading the instructions and doing it right, got the radio on, but the backup camera would not work. Re-seated the camera fuse, then it was fine. Not sure why that worked, but it is what it is. The image is a step up from the factory head-unit and I did not get stuck in the fisheye view like other people are mentioning. The Harness that it recommended for my car came with cables for steering wheel controls attached, however, they were not in the correct order and it did not come with the aswc-1 box needed to use them. Purchased the aswc-1 box separately, but as I said, the 12-pin connector wires are different. Since I did not want to splice and dice both harnesses I fiddled with manual programming and was able to get volume up/down/mute which is fine by me. Cannot get DVD's to play even with parking brake engaged. The sound can be heard from the DVD but the warning will not go away. To work with the dash kit for my car, the radio had a plate that needed to come off. Still it wasn't 100%, but I was able to screw it in the side so it held it in place properly. No one else will noti

Pros: Image/sound is great. Adaptive touch controls. Apply play

Cons: DVD's may not play. Unless you are willing to drill holes, will need to permanently attach your Apple lightning cable. Does fit 100 with the dash kit but looks decent enough. Tiny space at the bottom that I'm sure no one else will notice.

I purchased this receiver to install in my 2003 F250. I wanted something that offered Apple CarPlay but would still play my old CD's, and the DVD feature is an added bonus. I also wanted something compatible with an aftermarket backup camera. I was so impressed with it that I purchased two more receivers and cameras to install on my daughters' vehicles (2011 Tucson and 2001 Civic). The first time the camera prevents them from backing into something will make this money well spent! It also comes with a 3-year warranty that is unheard of at this price point. I highly recommend purchasing a dual USB extension cable because the two on the back of the radio will not be long enough. 12" extension should be plenty. I installed 3 footers and had a ton of extra cable to tuck away. I chose to cut new holes in my dash and flush mount the USB ports, but you could also just route the loose cable to your console area. I love that you can enter your vehicles year, make, and model, and Crutchfield will tell you exactly which wiring harness and trim kits you will need. If you have steering wheel controls (SWC), I highly recommend purchasing the interface unit to keep these controls operational. My truck does not have SWC, but one of my daughter's vehicle does (2011 Tuscon), and it is really nice to be able to voice text, adjust volumes, sources, and tracks, and answer/end telephone calls and never remove your hands from the wheel!

Pros: -Makes an old car feel better -Allows hands free calls and messages -Sleek design -Ridiculously reasonable price -All the new features and still plays CD's! -Four backgrounds to choose from -Multi color or solid color options

Cons: -Installation instructions seemed lacking, but that was also possibly due to my lack of experience. YouTube videos provided good supplemental information -USB cables could have been made longer to eliminate the need for extensions -I wish I could unload a custom background, but for this price, don't let that be a show stopper

Great receiver for the price. Big upgrade in performance compared to stock stereo in 2006 Dodge 2500 quad cab. Reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is wish screen brightness would go darker for nighttime driving. It does darken some just not as much as I wished. Overall really happy with this product for the month that I have had it.

After spending a few hours of install time and troubleshooting, this was determined to be a defective unit. I know Boss isn't the best brand, but at this price point, I'd expect better quality control. Crutchfield was great and had actual tech support on a Sunday. That's an awesome service. Unfortunately I was in a rush, so I didn't have time to wait on a replacement. Return process was easy, but I'm still out the $63 paid for next day delivery, and was not able to install a head unit before my daughter left for college. I won't be buying Boss again and wouldn't recommend Boss.

Pros: Not sure as I didn't get it fully installed.

Cons: Bluetooth module DoA

Solid and fast touch screen, great Eq, and it has everything as advertised. On the down side it could use better preamps as the sound will get abit muddy when pushed. And the lowest brightness is about as bright as you want it for daytime driving. All and all I would recommend if your planning on using a post amp or just looking for a better interface not really loudness.

Pros: Great touch screen Fast response Solid eq

Cons: Screen goes from abit too bright for nighttime driving to way way too bright. Preamps could be better.

Radio reception with the stock antenna is poor. Worked fine on the stock unit. Backup camera is dim and grainy using stock camera. Bluetooth connectivity is slow and randomly locks up requiring a power cycle Radio display crams song artist data into a circle the size of a quarter Limited audio controls Most of the time no one can hear me on phone calls. This was not an issue with GM unit using same stock mic. Boot up is painfully slow and muting during backup is annoying. If I had to plow snow in this truck I would loose my mind. The only thing this has over the stock unit is RCA jacks. It's 2020 - The smartphone should be controlling all media inside the vehicle.

This has been a huge downgrade from the factory head unit. RCA jacks are the only thing this unit has over the basic GM unit. Boot up is painfully slow. The backup camera is dim and grainy The song/artist data is crammed into a small circle on the radio screen Bluetooth connectivity is slow and no one can hear me. Audio control is lacking. I realize this thing is only this much but I have always used economical head units to avoid theft. The $$ goes in to the amps, subs, and speakers. In 2020 is seems the smart phone should be running the show.

Pros: cheap

Cons: cheap

Great radio, bad phone

Verified employee review (What's this?)

Radio sounded great and the layout of the icons was nice. Loved how customizable the screen was. Would have kept it except the microphone quality for phone calls was unusable. Even after swapping with a better microphone the unit could not produce clear enough voice for phone calls. After a call to crutchfield determined we got a lemon. Swapped it out for a JVC because inability to use for phone calls was a deal breaker and didn't want to take a risk on another Boss. JVC had great call quality but the screen layout was actually not as nice as the Boss. For the price it is probably worth trying... crutchfield is super helpful and make it easy to replace if you do get a bad one. Love the crutchfield techs and advisors.

Pros: User friendly screen Fairly easy install Nice sound Looks great Responsive touch screen

Cons: Iffy quality control Bad mic input on some units

It is ok. Truthfully I am not thrilled with it. A few things work really well and a miss or two. I had a hard time making it fit. The wires and the angle or the radio made a hard fit. Once installed it works but the radio tuner isn't as nice as you would like. You can select a station but it only show the song and Artist one word at a time. It has a nice size screen, so why not have a whole line going across giving you all the info?and other radio show the album jacket not here.. Seems like a big miss and is very disappointing at least to me. The Android Audio part works well, so if you just want to interface to your phone you should be good, but if you used your radio I would try something else. Big Disappointment

Pros: Android Audio

Cons: Radio tuner

I was concerned by replacing my factory original unit with a brand that I am not familiar with. After much research I chose this one. No regrets here. Sound is fantastic, better than the original. The functions are simple, easy to use, and the touch screen is very responsive. Since my Jeep does not have a back up camera, I didn't hook that up. The equalizer is great and has several presets and allows you to customize your own sound. Finally, Boss has a very good warranty on their products.

I would like to give it 5 stars but the idea of putting the CarPlay/USB plug in the back is DUMB. Now whenever my lightning cable dies I've to remove the stereo and plug in the new lightning cable. It has been 2 weeks since I installed it and I've not experienced any problems.

This is a great radio and not that expensive. I have had it for a few weeks and waited to do a review so I could get a real feel the stereo. My cons are "nitpicky" and not truly a burden. It's not a thousand dollar radio so one cannot expect that type of preformance but it's a solid unit. Would buy again would recommend to a friend.

Pros: Price vs features was great. Easy install. Plays DVDs and the screen can be adjusted to make viewing easier day and night. The stereo comes with remote and external microphone. Hands free calling is Great no issues there.

Cons: Do not like how the radio does not identify what song is on the radio. I have a remote start so the handoff between the bluetooth connection to actual plug-in to activate android auto is a little quirky. To remedy I have to unplug the phone and sometimes restart the phone to get android auto to start. Also, at times the remote does not seem as responsive and you have to press the button a few times to get the stereo to respond.

I love this radio, I've had aftermarket radios installed on my 2008 Toyota Corolla before but this one definitely takes the cake! It has all the features I was looking for like android auto/apple car play, Bluetooth, if you use the android auto you can also access Google maps, and various music streaming services such as Sirius XM, you can watch movies on it, and (i didnt do this cause i don't really need it) if you buy it separate you can even install a backup camera. The installation process was made very easy thanks to Crutchfield throwing in the hardware (dash kit, wiring harness, and instruction manual/master sheets), and it all shipped free of charge in only 2 days! I highly recommend both this radio and Crutchfield.com for all your vehicle audio needs!

Pros: Android Auto/Apple Car Play, Bluetooth, Play's DVD's, Backup Camera Compatible, Great Quality Sound, Easy to Install (the radio)

Cons: Installing a backup camera with this radio can be a bit of a challenge (unless your vehicle already has one Installed)

We're sorry for the trouble you had with this Apple CarPlay-equipped car stereo. As a prerequisite of CarPlay, a stereo that has it is compatible with iPhone 5 models and higher. You also need a Lightning-to-USB cable that's Apple-certified plugged into this stereo's rear "Apple CarPlay" USB port and not the "USB charging" port.
