Great in bright sunlight
Thomas from Lititz, PA on 9/1/2024
I put this radio in my class A motorhome to replace the outdated factory unit. Class A's have a huge windshield and large side windows in the cab area, so the ability to see the readout in bright sunlight was important to me. Seeing what is displayed is not a problem with this JVC. Sound quality more than exceeded my expectations and be able to stream music without hooking up a cable (like the old radio required) is very nice. Tom

CD Player Skips and Freezes
Miguel from Las Cruces, NM on 8/21/2024
1998 Jeep Cherokee
Immediately after installation the CD player skipped/froze when hitting road bumps. After a couple of weeks it began skipping/freezing at random (non-bumpy) intervals. It replaced a JVC in the same vehicle that never skipped, even on the worst washboard surfaces. Sending to JVC for warranty service.
Pros: Good sound when it's not skipping.
Cons: Worthless when it skips, which is often.

Good radio, complex to use PRO setup.
Albert from Ft Collins, CO on 7/7/2024
I selected this radio because of its white face background and large characters. It's mounted in a 1983 Datsun 280ZX and the position is low and away from the driver, so the displays on most radios are difficult to read. The display is very readable. Packaging is good and the radio is well protected in shipment. The wiring harness colors are shown on a carton flap, which is good because the nearly useless user manual is printed on cheap gray paper in gray ink. Go to JVC's website and download the complete owner's manual if you want to know how to set up and operate the radio. The feature set is great and both CD and USB sources are important Wiring colors and connections are conventional to most radios today. The install is easier if you have a harness adapter for your car, but there is none for my 280ZX so I had to work with the chassis harness. The mount is easy; a sleeve that slides into a 1 DIN mounting space and tabs bent to hold it in place. EQ and sound setup are quick if you use the EASY mode, more complex if you use PRO mode which provides a surprising number of frequency adjustments and requires knowledge of audio frequencies. Do it right and you can tailor the sound nicely to your listening position. Bluetooth sync with the phone required multiple attempts and was a bit frustrating but worked. The system sounds great when you complete the install, and I'm very happy with it. I used a sub in addition to the radio, and the result is very clean an
Pros: Great sound, great feature set, each front panel for legibility. Buttons are big enough to identify by feel. Works nicely with sub.
Cons: Enclosed install/owner manual is useless; download manual from JVC for the install and set up. Bluetooth phone sync is more complex than most.

Sounds good but not made for anything that may get wet
Crutchfield customer from PAINESVILLE, OH on 6/19/2024
2006 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide
The install was not bad but still had to do some custom wiring to get rear speakers to work. After the first riding season (NE Ohio) the radio worked great. Got caught in one rainstorm (2006 Electra Glide Classis) in June of 2023. Stored the bike over the winter and in April of 2024 the radio would not work. Called Crutchfield who referred me to JVC Tech support who then said I must send in radio for repair. The repair facility told me there was corrosion on the main PCB which voids the warranty. So a marine radio inside the batwing fairing and somehow internal corrosion voids the warranty.
Pros: Looks and sounds good.
Cons: Is not weather resistant as the specs would make you think.

For a 4X4
Todd from Kanab, UT on 5/10/2024

I purchased this for a 4X4 that is exposed to a lot of dust and vibration. I'm hoping the marine rating will equate to longer term durability. The last unit made it about a year before it gave up the ghost. As always, Crutchfield had the unit at a competitive price and when you add the great installation instructions and parts purchasing from Crutchfield is the easy decision.
Pros: Marine rating with all the bells and whistles. Easy installation with supplied materials.
Cons: Tiny buttons but it's hard to find a non-touch screen unit these days that isn't cluttered up with lots of small buttons.

Excellent choice of a Miata M-Edition '97
Mark from Wooster, OH on 3/30/2024
1997 Mazda Miata
Very pleased with this selection of a receiver for my '97 Mazda Miata M-Edition. Great audio and the LCD is easy to read even in bright sunlight which was one of the compelling reasons I looked at this particular model from JVC. Instead of using the METRA adapter for the dash I purchased an adapter from a different retailer. I recommend this to anyone upgrading their stereo to this powder coated stainless steel insert for the NA Miata. The JVC fit perfectly and it looks very clean. I would not recommend the METRA. I tried to install it but it would not fit properly without a significant amount of adjustment to both the dash and the adapter itself. The other adaptor fit right in like a glove - no adjustments - just anchored it down with four screws and ready to go. Bluetooth works great and so does the CD. Very please so far which is why I gave it a 5 Star rating.

Do not purchase this product or any other JVC/Kenwood "Marine stereo" with the Conformal Coating. This coating is supposed to guard against corrosion, well, it doesn't. I had mine installed in a Jeep Wrangler for 4 months when it quit working. According to warranty repair it failed due to corrosion and JVC is refusing to cover damages or replace the unit. JVC customer service is dismal at best, the service rep showed no concern what so ever. I'm going back to a Sony, no issues for 15+ years in the same Jeep, only changed because I dropped the face plate and it broke. I gave this 1 star because the review required at least 1 and would not accept 0 stars. I will add that the unit was not purchased through Crutchfield and this review does not reflect any issues with this company.

Great sound to replace the factory radio in my 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I had it installed by a local stereo shop. Everything went well except the AM was not working properly. Contacted Carl at tech support and he provided solutions and it's now working properly. Now I've just got to figure out how to work the Bluetooth and several other functions as it's more complex than the factory radio and the instructions are not that great.

Crutchfield wins me over.
Ted from Easton, PA on 2/27/2023
2000 Jeep Wrangler
I installed this in my 2000 Jeep wrangler. The included install kit with harness and antenna extension made this job painless. Everything fit perfectly and made the install look factory. I soldered and heat shrunk all wiring of the adapter harness to the radio harness. It made the harness less bulky behind the radio chassis. The radio does more than I could have expected or needed and sounds terrific. I am an old man from the days of having an am radio in my car and having to add a fm converter under the dash when stations became available. So, you can imagine how much more this offers me when I would have been just as happy to purchase a radio/cd receiver with push buttons and tuning knobs. Alas, those days are behind us unless you go to a junk yard. It is almost impossible to get anything in a brick-and-mortar store anymore and I was extremely pleased with the price, free shipping, and selection from Crutchfield. They are now my go to audio supplier.

A worthy enough upgrade for our Echo.
Crutchfield customer from BERKELEY, CA on 10/16/2022
2001 Toyota Echo
This is a good upgrade from the stock radio in our 20+ year old Toyota Echo. The JVC is a single din config while the stock radio it replaced is a two din unit/faceplate. Installation went smoothly with only minor hitches. (See the separate kit reviews for the free adapter kits Crutchfield included for free with our purchase of this modern JVC radio unit for more info about those.) After installation, initial radio setup was not as intuitive I would have liked-why do I have to set the audio and date/time setting prior to being able to setup the FM stations? Sound quality seems improved over stock. All-in-all, might purchase this unit again as it seems like a worthy enough upgrade to the old Echo. See below, Pros and Cons for more infos. Unexpected annoyances: -Power on/off, this JVC is complicated than the original radio; you have to hold the >input select< button for about 3 seconds before it will turn off? Not intuitive. And, if you don't press long enough to turn off, it's easy to accidentally switch the input audio setting.requiring you to then have to cycle through copious input choices to get back to the input you want to be at .before trying to power off the unit again? Ugh. -Wired mic requires some space on the dash for it to be attached to. We're still in the process of figuring out where this might be on echoes dash as the mic stick out and is easily knocked about. The CD player and the now rare white backlit main display is why we picked modern
Pros: -FM and CD audio differentiation seems better than stock radio on stock speakers -hot damn, it's got Bluetooth with modern voice control! -also nice, can have active pair to more than one phone -mood lighting and monochrome main display dimming can be programmed to change with time of day -USB is 1.5 amps -an aux port -Bluetooth with multiple paired phone voice control/calling/syncing (yay!) -recycled paper used for small operating instruction booklet (but see con on that)
Cons: -power on/off is controlled by long press on input select button. ugh. -3-5 seconds to turn on when ACC is already on -where the heck do we put this mic near the driver in an Echo.? -indirect sun causes glare off the glossy finish -why isn't the volume knob a solid cylinder on/off? -initial setup of radio is no intuitive, other oddities in the menu system; it works. but why this way? -quick setup booklet included is difficult to read in less than full sun
