Want the latest music and connectivity options in your ride? JVC's KW-M788BH multimedia receiver delivers smartphone integration, cool radio options, and ways to connect more gear, so your drive will be safer and more fun. This receiver's 6.8” touchscreen display lets you control your media, including Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto™, screen mirroring for Android phones, Bluetooth®, HD Radio™, and high-res music playback. You can also add amplifiers, up to three cameras, and a SiriusXM tuner to complete your vehicle's infotainment system.

Putting the "smart" in smartphone

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto put your phone's content at your fingertips. This stereo's controls behave like your phone's interface, so there's no learning curve. Plug in your Android™ or iPhone®, and you'll get voice control access to your navigation, phone calls, weather, text messages, and of course all your music. Get more info at www.apple.com/ios/carplay and www.android.com/auto. Android owners, you can also mirror your phone's screen on the JVC display by plugging into the rear USB port and using JVC's free "Mirroring OA for JVC" app.

Simple controls on a touchscreen display

This receiver's 6.8" capacitive display shows all your info in crisp detail and lets you customize its home screen for when Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are not active. When you're using the JVC onscreen interface its built-in Gesture Control provides simple and quick control over volume, track forward, and track back with just a swipe of your finger.

This JVC also sports a 13-band equalizer that allows you to set up separate tone curves for different audio sources. Combine that with the built-in digital time alignment processor, and you can put yourself right in the engineer's seat. Five ultra-clean preamp outputs give you flexibility in adding amplifiers to your system when you're ready to pump up the sound.

JVC KW-M788BH digital multimedia receiver

When using the JVC home screen, you can use Gesture Control to easily operate functions on the touchscreen display.

Wireless convenience with Bluetooth

Bluetooth enables wireless streaming for music and hands-free phone calls. You can quickly switch between two paired phones — handy for vehicles with more than one driver. Many portable audio players also include Bluetooth, so you can stream your personal music collections while you're on the road. When it comes to streaming audio, JVC's Streaming DJ feature lets you pair five phones so everybody can add their favorite songs to the road trip playlist.

HD Radio

Gateway to your music

Of course, you'll be able to tune in your favorite AM/FM radio stations, but this JVC also lets you enjoy HD Radio from participating stations. That means you'll hear FM that's close to CD quality or AM that comes in clear and static-free. And most participating stations send out secondary programming, giving you more choices when you're in the mood for radio. You can also add a SiriusXM satellite radio tuner (SiriusXM subscription required) to get non-stop music, talk, and news stations that will stay with you as you cross state lines.

You can plug your Android™ phone or iPhone® into the rear-panel USB port to engage Android Auto or Apple CarPlay and charge your phone. This port can also handle music stored on a thumb drive, including high-resolution FLAC and WAV music files.

Don't forget video

The KW-M788BH also provides handy video options like two camera inputs, as well as a rear A/V input that can be switched to create a third camera input. If you've got an audio/video piece to add to the system, like a video game console for the backseat crew, you can plug it into this receiver's rear mini-jack or micro-HDMI inputs. To get a video feed to that crew, you can connect an additional monitor to this receiver's video output.

iDatalink Maestro lets you keep your factory extras

Combined with an iDatalink Maestro RR or RR2 interface (sold separately), the KW-M788BH includes intuitive vehicle integration that lets you keep factory features that you'd otherwise lose when you install a new radio. Once you've identified your vehicle, you'll see the iDatalink module offered on the way to the Shopping Cart if it's compatible.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Smartphone note: If you're going to use your smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

You'll need a wired connection to your parking brake to access settings and other features on this receiver. Your parking brake must be connected and set in order to view video on its screen.

    Q
What is the difference between KW-M788BH and KW-M780BT?
    david t  Apr 17, 2024
    1 answer
    A
Hey David, so at the root of it, they are the exact unit but the KW-M788BH has two little upgrades that sets it apart that may or may not be relevant for you. The M788BT has a HD Radio tuner and the preamp outputs on the back are 5V rather than 4V which equates to a cleaner sound if you are sending a signal to some amps.

Hey Mark, so that will depend entirely on the vehicle you are looking at putting this JVC into. Some vehicles require the iDatalink Maestro regardless of what other features you may have. I have a 2005 vette convertible with the original radio with factory gps. does this unit give me an updated gps unit also? Is this a plug and play unit?

Will the backup camera automatically turn on when I put the vehicle in reverse?
    drew2015  Feb 08, 2024
    1 answer
    A
Greetings Andrew. Thank you for your question. The stereos that have a backup camera input also have a reverse trigger wire that needs to be wired into the vehicle. If that is done, the screen will change to the camera input when you put the vehicle in reverse.

    Q
i have a 2010 rav4 with remote start that is in line with odb2 port will this be a problem for idatalink?
    brian  Jan 27, 2024
    1 answer
    A
I took a look at the iDatalink install guide for your 2010 Rav4 Keith, and the HRN-HRR-TO1 harness does require connection to the OBDII port for full Maestro features. Since you already have a device plugged into that port, you will have to cut and splice the data wires to the correct PIN locations on your vehicle harness for full Maestro features when installing the JVC KW-M788BH.

    Q
Installation package differences: I am wondering what the differences are between installation packages at the $228 and $102 level. This is in a 2007 Toyota 4runner with JBL system. I see the chart but it is hard to determine what the actual difference is. Are you able to help?
    jeff t  Nov 13, 2023
    1 answer
    A
Greetings Jeffrey, and thank you for providing all your vehicles information with your question. There is one difference between the two packages. The $228 package gets this JVC stereo connected to the vehicle on board computer thru the ODB II port. That will allow multifunction radio buttons that your steering wheel might have. You can reprogram to multi task. Being connected to the vehicle computer would also access certain vehicle settings, performance gauges, engine diagnostics, error codes, tire pressure monitoring (with factory TPS sensors), Battery voltage etc. all on the JVC touch screen.

This unit has a wired AV-IN connection. This is a 4-pole mini-plug according to the manual. Is there a port available to install this in my dash much like the ports for the USB (PAC USBDMA6)? Most I see are only 3-pole and not capable of a video signal (audio only.)

Greetings Alibaster, and thank you for your question. At the moment, Crutchfield does not offer a dash mounted A/V input like those USB ports. You would need the 4 pole in order to do video thru that. Best we would have would be a 3.5mm AV to composite video, and RCA audio cable adapter.

    Q
I have steering wheel audio control in my Jeep, will I need a separate adapter for this radio or does it come with an input for this already?

    A
Greetings Nicholas, and thank you for your question. The JVC has the input wire, but like all aftermarket stereos we carry it will also need a steering wheel control interface. You can see what's needed to install the stereo by adding it to the cart with your Jeep listed as your vehicle, after adding the stereo, you will see the overlay telling you that you need installation parts for your vehicle.

    Q
How do I work the USB mirroring? I have a Samsung S21 running Android 13. How do I check for compatibility. Shouldn't this be more clear prior to purchasing? JVC KW-M788BH
    carl  Mar 16, 2023
    1 answer
    A
I would start by downloading the Mirroring OA for JVC App to your Android phone, Carl. If the App works, there is a good chance the mirroring is compatible with your specific Android phone (must be OS 7.0+). The mirroring also has some rules for use, this snippet from JVC is below: You can mirror the content from your Android (OS 7.0+) smartphone onto the touchscreen monitor of the JVC KW-M788BH; you'll be able to enjoy video and audio playback. Your compatible Android smartphone must be connected to the KW-M788BH via USB and Bluetooth. The JVC head unit's light green wire (attached to rear chassis) must also be attached to your vehicle parking brake circuit and your vehicle's parking brake must be engaged in order to mirror content from your Android smartphone to the KW-M788BH. In addition to mirroring content from your Android smartphone, you'll also be able to control your Android device from the in-dash receiver's touchscreen (some content may not support touchscreen control from the receiver). Mirrored content may or may not display in a portrait or landscape orientation. You must indicate that you will be using your connected Android smartphone for USB Mirroring and not Android Auto within the JVC head unit's on-screen menu. Bluetooth hands-free phone and wireless music streaming cannot be used while USB Mirroring is being used with a connected Android smartphone. The unit does not support audio playback from Android devices using MTP (Media Transport Protocol) or AOA (Android Open Accessory). Due to the nature of Android operating systems, not all features are guaranteed on all phones. I do hope this information helps you get connected!

    Q
Does this work with the factory reverse camera?
    rob  Feb 21, 2023
    1 answer
    A
We need to know your specific year, make, model, and trim level on your vehicle to determine any factory feature retention, Rob. The retention of factory features is going to depend on the specific interface used to install the fantastic JVC KW-M788BH radio. Sometimes we can retain the factory backup cam, sometimes we cannot. Use our online Vehicle Guide in the link below to enter your ride's key details, and then select the JVC radio (if it is suggested as a good fit). We will then list the install packages and retained features so you can see what is possible to retain. If you have any questions at all, please reach out at 1-800-324-9695 and a live Advisor can help you pick out a radio package and get it on the way! https://www.crutchfield.com/m_266150/Car-Stereos.html

    Q
This unit requires a wired USB connection from my phone to use android auto. Do I need to install a USB port in my dash to connect to the back of the head unit?
    john  Nov 06, 2022
    1 answer
    A
The JVC KWM-788BH features a rear-panel USB port that is attached to the rear-chassis via a 39" cable, John. If you do not wish to add any port to your vehicle you can simply route that USB cable to a convenient location where you can access it to plug in your Android phone's charging cable. If you do wish to make a solid mount this PAC USBDMA6 in the link below is one of our favorites! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_541USBDMA6/PAC-USBDMA6.html

    Q
When it says "wired" car play does it connect through the USB? I do not want to Bluetooth my music. I want the best signal I can send my amps and Bluetooth is not going to cut it anymore.

    A
Greetings Mattchew, and thank you for your question. Yes once plugged in to the USB you will be transferring via the wire, Bluetooth is then deactivated, all calls are then using the wired Carplay.

Will this unit allow me to retain my factory controlled settings (I.e., trip mileage, vehicle messaging, etc.) in my 2015 Jeep Renegade?
    gus  Sep 17, 2022

That JVC is compatible with the iDatalink wiring module which will allow you to retain those factory onscreen features in your 2015 Jeep Renegade. If you give us a call at 800.324.9695 one of our advisors can put together a full package all the installation gear you would need.

This receiver comes with a GPS antenna, but doesn't seem to have navigation functionality. If I don't connect the GPS antenna, what functionality will I lose (besides setting the clock by GPS)?
    joshua  Sep 10, 2022
    1 answer
    A
The GPS antenna helps improve the accuracy of your location when using Apple Carplay or Android Auto. If you didn't use it, your maps may not calibrate optimally.

Will this receiver work without wiring it to my parking break?
    logan  Aug 25, 2022
    1 answer
    A
Greetings Logan, and thank you for your question. Answer is most of the features will still work without that parking brake wire connection. What will not be available will be your settings which you need access to to pair your phone for Bluetooth, set the clock, adjust your EQ etc.
