They just don't match with the R700 Tower Speakers to be mounted on top. Poor designed, looks cheap. Unfortunately I did not have a choice since I want Dolby Atmos for my system. Very disappointed!

Pros: None

Cons: Fit, looks, mounting

Know what you are getting

I been in the process of upgrading the speakers in my home office which is a 3.1 setup. I upgraded from an older pair of R50 L/R and a CS 1 as the center. I replaced the R50 with a pair of R600's and a R350 as the center. The office space is small, 10x10, so installing regular surrounds would be a waste and I have a window on the right side and closet on the left. The R900's caught my attention and I like that they match the R600's. Well, what I found out that the R900's are truly made to fit on top of the R500's, they are bit smaller sitting on top of the R600's. As with most height/surround speakers they are only low 90's db's so there will be a need to tailor them to your liking even after doing room correction. I personally was not expecting they theoretical mindset of the bounce off the ceiling effect, but did expect the enhanced ambient sound coming from above the R600's. The full setup is now 3.1.2 and movies with Atmos support bring that immersed feeling like I get with my 7.2 setup in my familyroom. Best advice, know what your room will support and don't depend on room correction software only to set your system.

Pros: great look (match the Reserve Series) matching drivers (tweeter & mid bass) Once dialed in, gives that room filling feel

Cons: Only matches the R500 top size Will need to use smaller Guage wire to sit flat on top of speaker or wall (16 or higher)

R900 are excellent speakers; very happy with purchase (second set)

Tim from Dunn Loring, VA on 12/2/2024

Purchased a second set of these (Polk Reserve R900); I now have a front set and a rear set. These are excellent speakers. Audyssey automatically detects a 40Hz crossover for these, so the low and mid frequency reproduction is noteworthy, though you will still need a subwoofer for a powerful low end. The ring radiator tweeter on the R900 is excellent. I purchased these to timber match with my front stage (Polk LSiM707 and Polk LSiM706C) as well as my surround and rear surround stages (Polk Reserve R100). It is absolutely excellent to have a full timbre matched 7.2.4 Dolby Atmos setup - sounds seamlessly move between all channels. I'm a long time Polk fan. The R900 are excellent speakers and I'm happy to have a full timbre-matched set. Includes "sticky feet" to attach these to the tops of speakers. These are the exact same width as the Reserve R100 but they are deeper than the R100. The R900 has a switch for wall mounted sound versus speaker mounted sound.

Pros: High frequency response Mid frequency response Low frequency response Appearance Size Finish Timbre match

Cons: None

Solid build quality and a perfect finish match to my walnut R700 Towers and R400 Center Channel. Additionally the HTS12" in Walnut also matches really well with these from both an audio and an aesthetic perspective. If a "Dolby Atmos Enabled" speaker is what you are looking for, I highly recommend the R900.

Polk Audio Reserve R900

A year ago, I bought two pairs of these speakers as part of an upgrade to my meager listening space. Along with two R500 towers, a R300 center and a pair of R200 bookshelfs they create my 5.1.4ch Dolby Atmos system; replacing an Onkyo 7.1ch home theater-in-a-box system I've used for over 10 years. The R900s are toppers on my R500s and R200s for Atmos effects. At the core of my setup is an Onkyo TX-RZ50 with Dirac Live Room EQ and all speakers are being driven with an external power amplifier. I'm told that speakers like these will work best when mounted high on your walls, but that's not possible in my living situation. Thankfully I have a low ceiling, so Dolby's recommended setup works fine for me. The Atmos effects sounded great; cavernous scenes in movies were suitably echoey and aircraft in flight were coming in over my head. I was originally considering Monitor Audio and Klipsch (since they have affordable speaker lines with Atmos modules without having to mix/match) but I didn't care much for the sound from either, but when I heard the Polk Reserves that's all she wrote. Currently, I'm upgrading again to a 7.1.6ch Dolby Atmos system and just bought another pair of these to be toppers for my new R200 L/R Surrounds.

Pros: +A toggle switch that lets you select "on wall" or "on speaker" placement.

Cons: -Does not sit/mount flush to a surface well with banana plugs. -Moderately thick-gauge bare wire difficult to thread into binding posts.

I didn't use this speaker as intended, just wanted to state that right off the bat. It's sold as a height module for Atmos or DTS:X use. I thought they might make a great Surround-Back LR pair, so that's how I had them set up for some 7 channel surround goodness. They sounded pretty good, but they just couldn't keep up with the rest of my Polk system. I had to crank them to +10DB on the receiver to get them to be heard during one of my favorite action movies, Ready Player One. They just couldn't handle anything around 100hz or lower at reference volumes. My crossover was set to 80hz (rated for 70Hz on the box) and I heard some nasty sounds, so I rose it to 120hz which helped a lot, but I need a little more out of them than 120hz. I'm sending them back and trying some R100's next, hopefully they can handle the power/noise I'm planning to send their way. They seem like nice R-series speakers, but they probably shouldn't be fed any heavy lifting, especially below 100hz.

Pros: Nice design / good construction / nice tweeter

Cons: Poor performance below 100Hz

Okay, this is not exactly a review. I just want potential buyers to know that that the picture depicting the R900 sitting flush on another speaker is that the other speaker is an R200. I own R100s (which are great) and the R900s are definitely not flush with them (i.e., they overhang). That's not necessarily a problem but some people might not like the non-flush look.

I purchased these for front height , they are placed on top of my Polk floor standing speakers. Once added to the mix and calibrated, they are a fantastic addition to the over all sound. My only complaint being the location of the speaker connectors. If using the banana plugs the speaker won't sit flat.

Pros: Outstanding sound... Crutchfield customer service

Cons: Placement of the speaker posts.

Awesome speakers. Already had one pair for front high Atmos. Ordered these from Crutchfield as well for rear Atmos. Made a huge difference. Polk Audio Reference series is awesome. I have the R700's, R200's, R400 center and 2 HTS12 subs.

Pros: Great sound. Very versatile

Better height sound

Crutchfield customer from Chagrin Falls, OH on 5/21/2022

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

I just added two r900s as rear height speakers, thinking it would make a small difference at best to my Reserve mains and center and r900s as front height. Wrong; it has made a big add to the sound. The overall sense of height finally sounds more seamless. And the tweeters in the R900s add an overall clarity that just wasn't there before. I have LSiFX and LSiC as surrounds, and adding the rear R900s to that has made a distinct difference.

Pros: Tweeters add to overall clarity Better height soundstage Versatile placement options

Cons: About three inches too long for where I need to place them, so they hang off the ends a little!

Adds such an amazing depth (or heights) to movies. I decided to add these after purchasing the fantastic Polk Reserve R600's, having always wanted to fully utilize my Pioneer Elite A/R's Dolby Atmos feature. I did not want to have to cut into my ceiling to have flush mount height modules. These do such an amazing job. Along with the Polk R200's in the rear, a Polk Center S35, and a Polk HTS-12, I am so thrilled with my 5.1.2 setup, and would highly recommend any and all of these speakers.

Pros: Easy setup, attractive match with the reserve towers.

Cons: Didn't buy them earlier.

Good option for front wides/atmos/upfiring

Evan from Kirtland, OH on 3/13/2022

Verified employee review (What's this?)

Decent sound for the price. Comes with a handy flat cardboard replica of the rear so you can easily press it against the wall to mark where to drill holes. I'd put solid anchors or into a stud though to be safe, specially if you are just going into drywall. I sadly have not had the luxury of hanging these up (rental house) so use them as upfiring speakers. Upfiring is.. ok.I need to calibrate which I have yet to do to improve it. BUT Despite no calibration yet, when tested as just plain front L/R they sounded great. Obviously bass is lacking due to small woofer size, but would be nice for a small room or possibly bedroom stereo pair hanging on the wall. These have many uses aside from the advertised Atmos capability I also did notice a more full sound when using them as upfiring as well. Better soundstage due to it. I can only hope it gets even better after I have the time to calibrate it now that I have nearly all my equipment! Has handy switch on speaker for on wall placement or upfiring for crossover as well.

Pros: Good sound despite small size, easy to mount with included cutout for easy wallmarking, can be used as front L/R in a small setup, Crossover switch for on wall or upfiring

Cons: Woofer size bit small

Great for Dolby Atmos

These are a close as I could get for a Dolby Atmos speaker to match my other Polk speakers in my home theater. They sounded pretty great sitting on top of my main speakers, but really shine with the wall placement. On the wall the wires stick out on top, but I plan on running the cables through the wall later on and raise them a little higher.

Polk Dolby Atmos Speakers

Verified employee review (What's this?)

I bought these speakers for height dolby atmos speakers and I mounted them on the wall about 7'high behind my front speakers. I have them connected to an amp that does not have "Dolby Atmos" (new receiver is on the way) I paired them with Polk Audio Reserve 700 floor standing speakers and I really didn't expect to hear much difference with such small speakers, but WOW was I wrong...They added so much dimension to the sound of my Music , it is Amazing. I love these speakers for music and I have not even used them for movies with Dolby Atmos capability. They are very clear , they are great speakers, I may add 2 more for rear height presence.

Pros: Great sound, small size, very well built. has a selector switch for Wall or top of speaker mount. The switch allows the speaker to correct the sounds according to location

Cons: None
