Sonos Amp Approved

I didn't see many reviews about the Sonos Amp being used with floor / tower speakers so I thought I write one and help out the Sonos community. I have a whole house Sonos system with 8+ zones but I wanted to step up to better sound in one of my rooms. I wasn't sure how the Sonos amp would handle floor speakers like the Polk R600s but it seems to do a great job. The sound is clean and the volume is plenty. I was planning to add an SVS Subwoofer to these but I currently have a Sonos subwoofer connected to this zone and it provides a nicely balanced fill. I'll likely try the SVS sub eventually but I like the way it sounds with the Sonos Amp and the Sonos Subwoofer. As far as the speakers themselves, I'm really happy that I chose Polk. I watched a lot of YouTube videos before making a decsision (since nobody has these locally to listen to). Polk always seems to be a vlogger favorite and for the price it's hard to beat polk audio.

Love them for my home theater!

Well deserved 5 stars! These sound excellent top to bottom. They put out a good amount of bass for their size and they go pretty low. I haven't noticed much difference 6" from the back wall vs. further out. Response is plenty linear to my ear. Lows, mids, and highs are all very clear. Separation and imaging are great, and it takes well to EQ. I A/B tested this speaker against the ELAC Debut 3.0 DF63 and I would rate them equally high. The specs show them having the same sensitivity, but the Polk R600 is about 2db more sensitive for me. The ELAC has a warmer signature and sounds more laid back compared to the Polk R600. I'd call the Polk's signature neutral and smooth. Neither speaker's highs are harsh or fatiguing, but highs on the Polk are a little more forward and sparkly than on the ELAC, which makes bells and cymbals sound just out in front of you, adding depth to the soundstage. I think the ELAC does a better job separating lows and it might be even more linear. Speaking of lows, the Polk puts out a little more bass, but the bass on the ELAC sounds more natural to me. Bottom line, both are awesome speakers with their own personalities.

Pros: Design and build quality Deep, punchy bass Sensitivity Imaging Excellent for home theater

Cons: Slight difference in sound when sitting at the edge of the sitting area.

Just a few hours in and really enjoying these R600's. Favorites CD's on a Rotel CD14MKII through a Denon AVR-2808CI on Direct CD out to these tower speakers. Very nice strings and piano clarity, solid base and great room balance. Looking forward to how these will sound with a bit more use.

Pros: Easy ordering, fast shipping, well packaged as with all my previous Crutchfield orders. Smart looking speaker with great sound quality.

R500 vs R600 comparison (I tried both)

David from WEARE, NH on 5/13/2024

Verified customer (What's this?)
Verified employee review (What's this?)

I had the R500 for a couple of weeks before changing to the R600, so I feel I can compare the two fairly (for music). First, the R500 is fantastic and I was 1000% happy with the sound... thrilled actually, when run with a subwoofer. After I received the R500 and was in the process of evaluating them I realized I had enough space in my room to accommodate a larger size speaker so I decided to try the R600's. (I calculated the size/volume difference to be about 22% more for the 600) The R600 sound does seem to fill up the room a little better... perhaps a bit "larger" in delivery. The bass from the R600 is where the difference between the two models is most evident; IMO the R500 really must be run with a sub for full musical expression and depth, then the sound is fantastic. The R600 has substantially better/deeper bass on its own.... for someone who really didn't want a sub, or have the room to add one, the R600 should not leave you wanting for bass response. (This is regarding music, not home theatre where the bass would be a bigger deal).) I've been testing the R600 with the sub on and off (using a wifi remote switch so I don't have to move), it's not a sudden "oh, darn" when the sub gets switched off, the way it was with the R500. Could the two very different port designs account for the noticeable difference (R500 rear facing port/R600 bottom omni port)? Regardless of where it comes from, there is a big difference between the two when it comes to the lower f

Pros: Either way with the wonderful sound quality of the R500+sub or R600 without, you really can't go wrong with either for awesome sound at a reasonable price, in an attractive, heavy and seemingly very solidly-built cabinet

Fantastic Speakers. I had the R200s as my LR speakers and I have moved them to surround. Whether it's listening to music on stereo mode or watching movies in a 5.1 setup these speakers sound great and they work as one. You don't realize the speaker from which sound comes as the speakers work in a coherent manner and the sound stage is wonderful. This is my first non-soundbar 5.1 system and I love it. I do not listen to music that has too much base so these work fine for me. R350, R600 pair and R200 pair.

Exceeds my expectation in a relatively small floor standing package. When researching, I loved the specs and size of these speakers for my modest townhome living room, but was somewhat concerned not having an ability to first see and hear these in person before ordering. However, I couldn't be more pleased now that I've lived with them for a few days. Build quality is great; The black viny finish is just fine -- it's not the visual esthetic of veneer, but for the cost savings, I'll take it especially with the nice grey grilles. These also have a surprising amount of solid bass by themselves, although I use them in conjunction with a sub. Take a look at the Reserve line. Great bang for the buck with a positive visual esthetic!

Bring on the Thunder

Some times things are just meant to be. I originally ordered the Polk R100's and Pangea speaker stands. I was looking for an upgrade to my 33 year old Polk Monitor 5 floor speakers. The old Polk 5's where still sounding great but I knew my new Rotel A11 tribute was delivering more so I wanted new speakers to match. The R100's where on scratch and dent plus the sale price and where a bargin! The R100's had a magical and detailed sound. All arrived promptly but the speaker stands where missing parts. A replacement stand was sent quickly, but alas that also was missing parts. I was frustrated at this point and decided on floor speakers instead of book shelves. My Crutchfield advisor helped me decide on the R600s. He worked with me to measure my room and we determined that the 600's would be best as they had the down firing port and the R500 model had the rear firing port and needed room away from the wall for best bass. I cannot say enough good things about Crutchfield customer service, everyone stepped up to the plate and delivered excellent service from the return process thru the repurchase. Thanks Mason, Clarence and the others who helped me. I love the deep sounds the R600's produce and the clarity in all the ranges of sound. Oh, and the value is outstanding! I purchased these during the recent sale and the bonus scratch and dent discount on top of the sale price made them within my reach. Kudos to the Crutchfield Team!

Pros: Rich detailed bass, and excellent sound stage. More sound at lower volumes and a better sensitivity rating than the bookshelf versions of the Reserve Line up make these a great pair of towers for a 50 watt per channel system.

Cons: They are a large speaker. Might not be the best fit for smaller apartments or rooms.

I have been using bookshelf speakers on stands in a 2.1 system for nearly 20 years. With a larger listening room it was time to try out floorstanding speakers again to fill out the space and I'm so glad that I did. The speakers arrived nicely packaged and without any obvious damage. They're somewhat heavy but seem to be well built and aesthetically pleasing with a subtle design. The feet look slightly odd but are quite functional for stability and allowing the port to breathe. The R600s, while not the most sensitive speakers, provide plenty of volume with a Denon 100 watts per channel receiver. I am most impressed by their smooth, clear, non-fatiguing sound with beautiful imaging and adequate bass. However, I think a subwoofer is necessary for "full range" sound.

I had a set of Polk RT12s that sounded great, even after all these years, but these 600s are outstanding. Only challenge now is to go back and listen to all my music again just to hear what I have been missing all these years. These speakers are amazing. They are replacing some 25-year-old Paradigm Monitor 9s which have dual 8" woofers. I don't need more bass extension than what this speaker can provide, because the subwoofer handles that. I like the height of these speakers because it puts the tweeters close to ear level depending on the height of the listener. I like the port on the bottom because it allows more flexibility with placement. I'm not a fan of the binding posts. I am sure they are nice, but they don't seem to work as well as the cheaper plastic ones. These speakers are not bi-ampable, but I never plan to do that anyway.

Pros: bottom port tweeter placement enough bass for my needs

Cons: heavy the binding posts not biampable

Nice upgrade from Polk R200

Verified employee review (What's this?)

Yesterday, I replaced my R200's with the R600's for my Front L+R speakers. I knew the bass was going to be better from all the reviews I read online. However, my wife and I also noticed even more clarity compared to the R200's, particularly at low volume listening. We were able to hear more detail from supporting instruments while listening to music as well as more background detail in movies. Soundstage is superb. We haven't broken the speakers in, but I noticed a tiny bit less warmth in the upper mid-range compared to the R200's. Even then, the extra bass and clarity, plus the ability to truly enjoy music + movies at lower volumes is worth the upgrade to me. The R200's will continue to serve me as surround speakers. BTW, I'm using an Onkyo 7100, and so far that seems to have enough power for the volumes that we usually listen at. Thanks Crutchfield!

The Polk R600's are a home run

Bryan from St Paul, MN on 1/27/2023

Verified employee review (What's this?)

TLDR = Just like the others have said, these speakers are great at any price point and excellent for the current price. If you are in the market for a mid sized floor standing speaker you should give these a try. I have owned ELACs, Bose, Polk, and my R600's are the best all around sounding speakers yet. How did I come to this conclusion? Well they just fit my room and system perfectly for the type of listening I enjoy and if you have similar conditions I think they may be perfect for you too. My listening room is a smallish Den, 10' x 12' with a TV on the wall and the two R600's on each side approx. 6' apart and about 6" away from the wall, yes that close! On the opposite wall I have a small sectional couch. This yields a listening position of about 8' from the speakers when on the couch. My ears are at the same level as the tweeters when seated. I have the R600's connected to a Schiit Audio DAC, Tube PreAmp and 200 wpc Amp. The DAC is fed via Android TV USB out. About 90% of my music I steam this way. The R600's are a more power hungry speaker than most of what I own, not a bad thing but know you will need a good clean 75wps for normal listening levels. The highs are very detailed and image with a perfect center stage and slightly forward. The Mids are spot on for me clean and tight. The Bass is full and fun and the best part is, no room Boom. The R600's are not perfectly flat in their sound profile, but have a slight U shape, which is what most folks enjoy in

Pros: Clean, detailed, and almost full range sounding speakers with a slight U shape sound profile. The down firing center ports work great and allow close placement to walls without room boom being created. The walnut with dark gray speaker grills look awesome.

Cons: The R600's need more power than other speakers I have owned. I have them paired up with a 200 wpc into 4 ohm Amp. I normally have the pot set at half way for normal listening levels. So you will need a good 4 ohm rated amp to power these correctly.

Ring Radiator Tweeter is incredible!

It is well established that the Polk Reserve line is an incredible value. I agree. I bought one "scratch and dent" and one "open box" from the outlet, and both arrived quickly with no visible damage besides packaging. They're mostly used for movies along with a R400 and Atmos with an Onkyo NR-7100. These speakers do perform well above what their price may suggest. They seem to work well with my AVR (which frustratingly doesn't have pre-outs for external amps). What really surprises me is the vast soundstage and off-axis response in the high frequencies. They are incredibly clear across different positions. With the R400 center, the experience is miles ahead of my old Paradigm Studio 20/CC-470. They are accurate and clear across the frequency range, but start to roll off before sub bass region. Any sub that plays well 20-50hz should compliment them well. Polk has really earned all of the praise they're receiving with these speakers.

Pros: - Expansive soundstage makes off-axis listening incredible for both movies and music. Crazy good with a matching center. - Accurate response - More than expected, well-defined bass - Excellent build and esthetics

Cons: - There seems to be a slight dip in the upper midrange somewhere that can make female vocals a bit thin compared to male (ex: That Bon Iver and TSwift song)

I love the sound, paired with a high quality receiver (Yamaha Aventage) they are very clear and musical. I was afraid that the size was going to be too large and that I should have gone with the R500 to avoid getting in trouble with the Mrs... but she and I both think they're a reasonable size and aesthetically pleasing. I like that the white stands out and really makes them pleasurable to look at even when not in use. You can tell these speakers are high quality all around, from the build construction itself to the binding posts in the back.

Pros: Look, sound, build quality, price was fair (bought on sale made it even more compelling)

Cons: The spiked dome can be dangerous if you have kids or maybe some curious pets - keep the grilles on if this is your situation. Be careful not to damage it when removing them from the box.

I had a pair of Polk ES 20 bookshelves plus a subwoofer. The ES 20s are a good speaker but they just didn't fill the room with sound the way I wanted, and when pushed the speaker had to strain too hard and lost its composure at higher volumes. I decided to try the r600s and wow, they fill the room with sound in a way my bookshelves could never do, and sound amazing at higher volumes. The tweeter on these is a revelation and orders of magnitude better than the soft dome tweeter on the ES 20s. And also there is no longer a hole in the midbass like I was getting with the bookshelves + subwoofer. If you like punch and slam with amazing highs, get these.

Pros: Tweeter is a revelation! Room filling sound. Balanced sound from the highs all the way down

Cons: Have to pull these out from the wall a good bit so the bass doesn't overwhelm the mids.

My Speaker Journey Ended With These!

After demoing the Elac Debut Reference DBR62s, the Emotiva T1+s, the Wharfedale Evo 4.3s, the Focal Chora 816s, and these speakers little brother (the R500), I finally settled on these as the winner. Powered by the latest generation Powernode. Going in order: Elac Debut Reference DBR62 was lacking in clarity and separation. It also made me realize I wanted a floorstanding speaker for that bigger sound Emotiva T1+ was very impressive, but did not meet our aesthetic expectations and was a bit over-emphasized in the treble. Still, if these were more attractive I think my search might've ended here. Wharfedale Evo 4.3 was a disappointment. Muffled sound with a very narrow sweet spot. It was the opposite of the Emotivas: unimpressive sound, but very attractive. Focal Chora 816--wow were these speakers bright. Too much. Polk Reserve R500 was good, super slender. I liked pretty much everything about it except it didn't extend quite as low as I wanted in the bass and was rear-ported so was a bit boomy with my room placement (I have to put my speakers relatively close to the front wall due to layout). Polk Reserve R600 went deeper than the R500 for beautiful, thick low-end but without boominess in my room because it is bottom-ported. Great imaging, a little sparkle in the treble but never over-bearing. It makes pretty much everything sound good but also shines with high quality recordings. And they look nice. Recommended! And thanks to Crutchfield

Pros: Sparkly but smooth treble, clear midrange, powerful bass. Great sound dispersion. Attractive design.

Cons: None.

Very pleased with my purchase. I talked in detail describing what I wanted in a floorstanding speaker to Trish at Crutctfield. She Recommended the larger R800 to me, I selected the smaller, middle model based on me placing under tv. I returned my Kef q350 bookshelf to BB because I wanted more Soundstage and I felt the kef's while very detailed, did not produce the bass I wanted. My second purchase was Martin Logan 40I from BB, while very detailed on top end(high frequency) it lacked balanced bass. In order to achieve the bass I wanted, i would have to turn up the volume to ear bleeding levels. I really love the Polk Reserve R600. Not all top heavy, balanced in my opinion, listen for hours without fatigue. I could write a book on how pleased I am with the build quality, appearance and of course sound.

Fun speakers

Eugene from Longmont on 3/4/2022

Verified employee review (What's this?)

Most of my rating of these speakers boils down to: they didn't jive for my taste. I had a pair of Polk LSiM705 very briefly a few years ago, and one thing I noticed with those (and unfortunately with these as well) is what I would describe a smearing in the bass/lacks detail or definition. That being said, the bass punch is strong. Holy cow. This definitely would rock for movies and if it's your thing, for music. The highs come through well. Sounds elevated but not so much so that they are piercing to my ears. I think the combination of the bass punch and the highs gave me the impression that the midrange was underwhelming. Almost as if there is a drop in volume. In short, the midrange, to my ears, was not very clear and perhaps overshadowed by the bass and the treble. This speaker is definitely not a laid back speaker, nor is it overly bright and forward. It has a fUn sound signature that I am sure many will enjoy. And did I mention that it looks pretty good considering the finish used. The walnut finish coupled with the grey *magnetic* grilles look wonderful.

Pros: Handsome looking speakers, especially in walnut Punchy bass Offers good amount of detail up top.

Cons: Wider feet for tall slim tower speakers please The down-firing port still manage to activate/vibrate my floors.

I most recently upgraded to Signature Series S60's (fronts) and S55,s (rear). My Signature series speakers were very good. For the setup, I hooked them up to my Pioneer Elite VSX-90. They sound great! I think that the highly improved cabinetry in the Reserve, as well as the new 1" Pinnacle ring radiator tweeter, really make for a speaker that wouldn't be embarrassed by, say, a KEF R7. I'm not saying that the R600 is as good as the KEF, but for 1/3 the cost, the smile on my face helped me hear a little more clearly when listening to the R600's. The new R600's outperformed the S660's so much so, that I then notice my S55's used in the back surround speakers suddenly sounded hollow. Quick side note here: I have for the last decade, upgraded my speakers, and left the surrounds in the earlier models in place until I have the cash to upgrade them as wells. And since I am always buying Polk, the difference never bothered me very much. Now, along comes the reserve series. Clarity beyond anything I have owned before (had some nice Mirage M1's before). "Tight" is an over-used adjective used for speakers, but that is what I feel from these speakers. I ended up changing out my S55's for the Reserve R200 (another review coming). Clarity and lack of "hollowness" is truly amazing. Don't hesitate if you think that these maybe what you're look

Pros: Exceptional Clarity Attractive cabinet Great highs from the 1" Pinnacle tweeter

Cons: A little power hungry Any older model's timber is put to shame
