Designed for versatility

JBL designed their Club Series 122SL 12” subwoofer for versatility. Its low-profile design allows it to fit into shallow enclosures, and its selectable impedance gives you flexibility in configuring your system. That means it'll fit in just about any vehicle and into any upgrades you make to your bass setup.

Selectable impedance

Unlike most other dual voice coil subs, this sub's Selectable Smart Impedance (SSI™) switch makes it easy to change the sub's impedance from 2 ohms to 4 ohms, the most commonly used impedances. No complicated wiring — just flip the switch and you're done. This feature makes it easy to reconfigure your system when you add another Club Series subwoofer or upgrade your amplifier. The sub's proprietary aluminum cone punches out bass as low as 30Hz and handles up to 400 watts RMS. It works equally well in free-air applications, or in sealed, bandpass, or ported enclosures, another example of its versatility.

Features

Selectable Smart Impedance (SSI): A switch on the input terminal allows you to easily change the woofer's impedance between 2Ω and 4Ω settings. (The connected amplifier should be off when changing the impedance.) The power handling is the same for either setting; 400 watts RMS/1200 watts peak.

Sealed Enclosures: Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer and provide accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music. JBL recommends a sealed enclosure of 0.88 ft³.

Vented Enclosures: Vented (or ported) enclosures typically provide better overall efficiency than sealed so they are suitable for use with smaller amplifiers, giving you more bass output from a given amount of power. JBL recommends a ported enclosure of 0.88 ft³ with one 3.54" diameter x 10.24" long port, yielding a tuning frequency of 43.8 Hz.

Free-Air: The woofer can also be mounted in free air to a baffle board (infinite baffle, no enclosure). When mounted in free air, the power handling is reduced by half (to 200 watts RMS).

Band-Pass: JBL also recommends a prefabricated band-pass enclosure, but no volume specifications are listed in the manual. Band-pass enclosures often provide the most output available from any amplifier and subwoofer combination, but at the expense of sonic accuracy.
