Big smooth sound. No sub needed.
Ross from Pinetop, AZ on 5/13/2023
I owned a pair of these in the late 70s. They were awesome. And with some improvements from the originals they should be even better. I have not been able to play them yet. Ordered some lesser speakers and returned them. They just didn't come near the rich, room filling sound the L100 have. These will be the last pair of speakers I will ever need. You get what you pay for.

JBL L100 Classic
Dimitar from Charlottesvle, VA on 4/23/2023
I was looking for my first quality speakers. Ordered this JBL l100 and was debating for price. Once I opened the box and plugged them to my stereo system to compare with the one Technics I own. it's completely different sound coming from them. Sitting in my living room and swapping between them, this JBL speakers have so clear sound and so much power that no other I had. Considering it's also the most expensive, I kinda expected that to be the result. The look on them is amazing - have this classy design and sturdy box that will last forever. worth the money and will enjoy them for long time

Almost Great but misses the mark
Jeff from York on 2/24/2023
JBL always made an excellent speaker BUT these are Ported and very peaky bass sounding and nothing close to Acoustic Suspension speakers if done properly. In 1978 I demoed the AR11 with these JBL 100s and spent a lot of time listening to them and the JBLs couldn't stand up to the ARs for detail and low end bass. JBLs are great for Rock and other loud mediums but Jazz, Classical and softer music even some Rock will sound so much better on a good 12" 3 way Acoustic Suspension speaker any day as long as it's critical listening not just blasting music. Still they're one of the best bookshelf still around but I miss Acoustic Research also and I've been listening for almost 50 years now!
Pros: Great Drivers, Very loud ,.Nice looking,.
Cons: Possibly made by Samsung now that they bought out Harmon International Peaky bass with sharp dropoff on low signals like 30-60 Hertz.

They sound great. When I was a kid I owned a pair of Century L100 speakers, now that I'm 65 years old, I thought I would relive my youth. I'm disappointed though that their no longer made in the USA. I still own a pair of JBL L65 Jubal's I bought in 1975. I see they still use Walnut veneer like all of my older JBL's . Finish was great and they arrived with no issues.

New L100 speakers are in additon to my original JBL L100's which are now 45 years old and are still great. New speakers are a little bit brighter, have a little better dynamic range, and are arguably slightly better. One bad thing is new grill frames are now plastic, not real wood like my originals. Also the new speakers are VERY heavy, about 75 pounds each. The originals were about 55 pounds each. New speakers also have a slighty larger footprint. They both sound great overall. I was a little bit surprised and dissappointed that the new grill frames were made of plastic when the price tag does not justify that. I also bought the new pedestals which are also very heavy gauge steel, are well made, with padding for speakers to sit on and the speakers fit them well. Overall, great sounding and very heavy speakers.
Pros: Great sound, great system and these speakers rock.
Cons: The cheap plastic grill frames let down an otherwise great product and are too cheap for a system that costs over $4500.

Until these arrived I felt like I should have my head examined for spending so much money on a pair of speakers. But once they got here you really do see where you're money went. Each speaker weighs almost 100 lbs. Had to get the stands to go with them which is more money unfortunately but necessary. The sound that comes out of these really is something else. You might reckognize the vintage grill style as these are the loudspeakers from the old Maxell Cassette ads with the guy being blown out of his easy chair. I've pushed the volume levels on these pretty high and they didnt waiver once. Just pure power. I've since resigned myself to the fact that these are the last pair of speakers I will ever need in my life and if I mentally amortize the cost over the next 40 or so years they're a bargain.
Pros: Quality build, classic styling, amazing sound, weighty, powerful.
Cons: You have no choice but to pay extra for the stands.

JBL L100 Classic's
Crutchfield customer from ACWORTH, GA on 7/8/2021
Waited for a pair of these since college and it was worth the wait...I replaced a pair of Cerwin Vegas D-5's I've had since the eighties and all my cd's and albums never sounded this good. Crutch field was great to work with, ordered them Thursday, they shipped Friday and arrived Tuesday (Monday was a holiday). Arrived in perfect shape. I can't say enough good things about my experience with Crutchfield and these JBL's.
Pros: Look great Sound incredible

Stunning detail
Crutchfield customer from Dulzura, CA on 6/3/2021
Replaced my old Dahlquist DQ-10s which I loved but needed some major tune ups.. The JBLs brought back the clarity and detail I had been missing. Running through a 130 watts per channel Marantz. Haven't really cranked them yet because I'm enjoying the full sound stage at moderate volume.. even with compressed audio, Bluetooth some albums shine.
Pros: Everything
Cons: None once you swallow the price tag

old JBL 100s versus new JBL 100s
Crutchfield customer from Newark, DE on 12/20/2020
Bought 4 JBL 100s in 1975 and still have them and run them today as my principle speakers at my east coast home. They still work beautifully. I tested them at audio stores in 1975 against the best of the day using my own music selection and they traunced everyone. Far better than Bose 501s and Bose 901s, Klips and Sony speakers, etc. (the 901s clipped the deep lower end, and the JBLs did not). The new classic JBL 100s are for my west coast house and are as good or better that the ones I bought in 1975. The clarity and separation of sound across the spectrum from high to middle to low is amazing and unbeatable. The look is identical to the old versions and the sound is as good or better (the tweeter seem to sound better in the new version). The new version wire connections are better and easier to use than the old versions as well.
Pros: sound quality
Cons: heavy for a "bookshelf" speaker

Time capsule
Crutchfield customer from San Jose, CA on 6/29/2020
If you have the money to splurge on a Hi-Fi system then buy these speakers and a used $50 amp. I paired them with a basic 40W NAD integrated amplifier. There is plenty of volume headroom. The speakers really standout with guitar acoustics and solo or duet vocals. Total vintage look built with modern components so the the sound quality defies the enclosure.
Pros: A feast for the ears and eyes.
Cons: Obviously there are better options if your goal is best performance for price. These offer great sound and a great vintage look to match.

The perfect speakers
Crutchfield customer from Austin, TX on 11/9/2019
My high school orchestra had a pair of L100s, and we used to go in during lunch hour and crank LL Cool J and Beastie Boys. I've always loved JBLs since then. I have a pair of JBL L20Ts that I bought a few years later in college, and have always wondered what happened to the "special" JBL speakers. Well, it turns out JBL has a high-end "Synthesis" line of specialty high-end speakers. When I saw these pop up on Crutchfield, I decided it was time (after 30 years) for me to upgrade my L20Ts. I'm still breaking in the woofers, but the sound is amazing. I upgraded my whole system... I also purchased the Arcam SA20 and am using the Yamaha WXC-50 as a source (with Tidal). With this setup, the definition is unbelievable.. I can pick out each individual instrument and voice, right down to the string fingerings on a violin (I'm a violinist). Yes, the speakers are big -- but it's a nice mid-century modern vibe that looks great in our family room. If you're on the fence about these... go ahead and pull the trigger.
Pros: Great sound - doesn't matter the genre: classical, jazz, rap, rock
Cons: None
