Guest from Spokane, WA on 4/14/2023
I couldn't believe I actually liked these better than my $1200 Elac UBR62s the Elacs were too neutral..These are a fun speaker. Good highs, the bass is mostly mid bass, it's not going to dig too deep, but there is a definite mid bass boost that makes for "Lively" listening. Setup is important, they need some space from the wall or else they sound a little muddy. They also really start to open up when you start putting some power to them. Great buy for the price!
Pros: Great value for a bookshelf. Clear sound, "Musical" lively speaker, meaty midrange
Cons: No real cons..Not for snobby "Audiophiles", some people may not like the bump in mid bass, doesnt go too low .

Bought these as the start of my own journey into home theater. After reading many reviews and comparisons, I decided on these because the price was right. They sound great and were easy to setup. The added benefit is that when I do decide to upgrade in the future, these can go from my current 2.0 and still be used in a 5.x or 7.x configuration as side or rear surrounds.

Great for surround speakers, but can't handle bass.
William from Minneapolis, MN on 1/9/2023
I am running a yamaha rx-v663 as a pre amplifier into an onkyo m-5000. I am pushing 105 watts per channel at peek power. My receiver goes from -80db to +15db for sound volume. Anything over -10db and they distort and pop badly when the bass hits. I normally run a set of old 80 watt Bose 141 in this position on my system and have never had an issue with distortion. I'm not sure if these jbl stage a130s are defective, but they sure can't handle the power jbl claims they can. The bose 141s will handle +5db on the volume before I start hearing distortion like this. They would make a great set of surround speakers in this setup hooked directly to the rx-v663, but as part of the front stage they didn't sound half as good as my old bose 141s.
Pros: Pros great for surround speakers.
Cons: Can't handle bass at high volume.

Arthur from Gresham, OR on 10/19/2022
These speakers are pretty punchy for only a 5.25" mid/bass driver. They don't do the boomy bass at all if that's what you're looking for. I'd suggest looking for a 6.5" for that. Overall these are nice and the highs are not harsh at all which will lend itself to long music listening sessions.
Pros: Price, quality
Cons: finish could be a bit better

Great sound right out of the box
Ken from New Port Richey, FL on 10/9/2022
Bought a set to replace 5 year old Polk RTi A3's. I kept playing with the my equalizer settings trying to get the Polks to sound clear and crisp, not nasally and fuzzy. Got the JBLs and what a difference! Even before equalizing the sound is clear and crisp. I ran the Audyssey equalizer setup on my Denon AV amp and these little guys fill my living room with great sound from movies, TV and online music sources. I do help them out on the low end with a sub and set the Audyssey from "reference" to "flat" when listening to music. Thinking of getting the A170s to be the fronts and moving the A130s to the rear to surround the room with crisp clear sound. From what I have read on the A170s I can probably get rid of my Polk sub. Highly recommend these speakers. Oh, and Crutchfield's Customer Service is second to none! I had a delivery problem (UPS's fault, not CF's). CF was willing to rectify the problem immediately had I needed it. Luckily it worked itself out; my neighbor had my package.....
Pros: Clear sound, crisp response.
Cons: Needed a sub for that low rumble.

Good overall; GREAT at the sale price
Ben from Montclair, NJ on 9/20/2022
They are good at the list price, but the $300-400 range has lots of choices... and they almost all have a cabinet and finish that feel more expensive. But at the $200 sale price, they're a no-brainer. They have a nice flat response through most of its range, but they like to "play big". They play louder and more "bass-y" than my Dynaudio DM 2/5 and old Mission m31's, both of which are more laid-back and are easier to blend with my subwoofer. But the JBL's would be terrific if you wanted to go sub-less, or wanted to create a bigger front soundstage for your HT (which was my need). They are bigger and heavier than almost any other 5.25" bookshelf speaker I've seen, so you'll want to budget appropriately for heavy-duty stands.
Pros: Big punchy sound, but maintain great detail and texture. Price.
Cons: Cabinet finish. Size and weight might be a problem. Slightly harder to integrate with a sub.

New "Keepers" of My Kitchen Area Sound
Cornfed from Central Illinois on 7/20/2022
Was always partial to the JBL sound - focused, smooth, detailed and clear without any ear splitting shrillness. Took a chance on a pair of " scratch and dents." They shipped double boxed. The inner factory box was a bit beat up but the speakers were like new! Kudos Crutchfield! Anyway, put the Stage A130's up against my great sounding sealed box (6.5" woofer non-ported, acoustic suspension ) NHT SuperOne 2.1's in my kitchen area system. To my surprise the JBL's won the competition! They're slightly more clear, definately more focused and produce a wider soundstage than the NHT's. The JBL Stage A130's are very good sounding speakers in my opinion. Good bookshelf speaker value.
Pros: Clear Focused Well Balanced Very Solid Cabinet
Cons: Regular pricing looses a competitive edge

They sound great. Bass is really good for someone who isn't an audiophile. Listening to Spanish music is amazing but when listening to rock the high end "cymbals" sound rolled off and muddy. My family can't tell the difference though.

JBL Stage A130 - Mystery Solved? Read on.
Michael from West Hills, CA on 5/22/2022
The JBL Stage A130 bookshelves could have an entire 'X-Files'episode dedicated to the mysterious measurement disparity between two beloved audiophiles. How could their findings be so different? Did JBL change the design? Why are the speaker cap things so hard to remove? "The truth is out there!" So, I set YPAO to flat and let the AVR do it's thing. The A130's kinda 'rock!' I enjoyed the soundstage and imaging. They are punchy and I had fun listening to a variety of movies and music. For music , feels like these were made for live recordings, vocals are clear. Overall, 4-Stars and while speaker scientists and budget audiophiles will continue to tinker, EQ and debate. I'm very pleased to recommend the JBl Stage A130's from Crutchfield.

Great for my son's very small room.
David from Roebling, NJ on 5/10/2022
I bought these for my son to use in his room which is very small, about 8x12, which doesn't give much space to work with. He loves them in spite of the less than ideal placement at the moment. I'm going to be doing a renovation on the room soon, and we'll be dealing with the layout and trying to improve that issue. But these work well with his Onkyo integrated amp and are a huge upgrade from the Aiwa speakers he had been using for the past couple of months since he got the ia. The bass is tight and the overall response is clear and listenable. I'm sure they'll work well for the classic and Indy rock that he listens to once we get them situated properly. They do need to be away from the wall, which is tough in a room this size, but I'll make some stands to work around the small space to get them where they need to be. The speakers are pretty small and should be easy to fit into the room suspended in a pipe frame yet tbd.
Pros: Easy to drive. Tight bass. Clear and listenable Small enough to work in the tiny room.
Cons: Requires space between it and the back wall which is more of a problem in this tiny room than most. But planning to build pipe frames to suspend them safely and not sacrifice floor space.

Jack from Cheyenne, WY on 4/7/2022
A long time ago I bought some JBL bookshelf speakers for a home system, all of it fairly high end stuff. They were excellent. They were given to one kid or another as their college dorm stereo needs required. Now, decades later, I'm buying these as a part of a complete rebuild of my system. I'm hard of hearing, and the ability of these A130s to help with midrange sounds is appreciated. As an enhancement to the overall sound of a system they are a good addition. I didn't know Harman/Kardon owned JBL these days. Sound quality has not been diminished by that.
Pros: Good, crisp mid-range. Enhance my Polk towers nicely.
Cons: None, other than the limitations of their price range.

Bought these on sale. Beautiful sound. Come from a JBL background. Purchased my first while in the Navy in 1978 overseas. Paid $750.00 for the JBL L65s with the smoke glass tops pair. Incredible sound. Had those L65s for 40 plus years. Traveled with me in several homes. Finally one of them out. Used the remaining one as center piece in a 5.1 AV receiver setup. Moved to definitive technology subwoofer satellite speakers. They were good. But I missed that JBL sound. Sold the definitive speakers and moved to a listening room. Used the remaining JBL L65 with Polk bookshelves. Nice sound combination with the listening room. But missing again that full JBL sound. Found these L130 here on Crutchfield discounted. Read the reviews and purchased. Upgraded my sound from the pioneer vsx-455 5.1 AV to a marantz nr1200, added a new CD player along with my vintage pioneer pl71 TT. Added a modest but hard driving pioneer subwoofer for a great sounding 2.1 stereo platform. No Surround no center speakers, just great stereo like the good old days of a sound source via JBLs. Since the l130 are 6 ohms my marantz nr1200 goes from 75 watts rms at 8 ohms to a 100 watts at 6 ohms rms. Just gets better sounding all the time. If you are a JBL or have been user these will enrich your listening pleasure.

These are an excellent buy. The imaging and soundstage are great. Clarity is very good. Bass is present and accurate but would benefit from the use of a sub with bass heavier music. They have a great neutral tonality. I also have the studio 530s and I prefer the a130s because of the greater presence of the midrange. The 530s have a slight edge in clarity and are great, but can feel airy and thin compared to the a130s in the midrange. They are just a pleasant pair of speakers to play your records through. Great value here.

Too much of a good thing--distorted too.
Crutchfield customer from Virginia on 3/2/2022
I read some great reviews of this speaker. I prefer well-defined high frequencies and quick bass with warm mids thrown in. The bass was acceptable for the size of the speaker. Not as quick as I like but acceptable. As for the high frequencies, they were extremely forward, screechy, and fatiguing. One song at a time was enough for me. Burn-in didn't help. Source material, room and placement in room, amp, preamp didn't help. In a word, these were lousy. I couldn't even eq some of the lousiness out of them.
Pros: size
Cons: screechy high end fatiguing high end lifeless no sound stage unlistenable

Amazing Soundstage!
Alex from Texas on 1/21/2022
I'm using a JBL Stage A130 pair as the front left and right speakers in a 5.1 home theater powered by a Denon AVR-S760H. (The JBL Stage A125C as center and A120s as surrounds complete the package.) Music and movies get about equal play time here. These speakers create a realistic front soundstage in either setting, though they shine when used for music in a 2.1 setup. I drop the level of the subwoofer from the normal (movie) level so it just gives enough low end support while the A130s provide all the clarity and detail needed for an enjoyable listening experience. Whether synthesizer-based pop, acoustic, rock, symphonic, or choral music, these have been great. The stereo soundstage is particularly good - listening in stereo sometimes sounds like listening in surround sound! I upgraded to JBL Stage from old and even older Sony 3-way bookshelf speakers. These are better. I got these on sale for $199.95 and I think the regular price of 299.95 would be well worth it. If $200-300 is your budget, these are the ones to get!

Unexpected refinement at this price point
Michael from Gettysburg, PA on 1/19/2022
After reading many reviews and test reports, I chose the JBL Stage A130s to replace the 10" 2-way vintage bookshelf speakers in my basement rec room, and am very pleased with the results. The JBLs have a better overall tonal balance, flatter response, higher treble extension, and surprisingly, similar bass extension to the larger vintage speakers. Where the vintage speakers sounded pleasant on vintage material, the JBLs shine on almost everything. This is a very impressive display of what can be achieved in a bookshelf sized package. Credit is due to Crutchfield as well. I purchased a "scratch and dent" pair from Crutchfield Outlet, knowing I had the backing of their generous return policy if I was unhappy with the condition of the speakers received, or just decided they weren't a good fit. The speakers I received were well packed in their original carton and showed no discernible flaws.
Pros: Broad range and flat response in a compact package
Cons: Missing just the last bit of low end thump.

Pleasing to the ears !

I'm giving my very modest home theater an audio makeover and being a long-time JBL fan, I came across these Stage A130's and the A135C Center loudspeakers on sale at Crutchfield. The sale price made them just that more enticing to add some post-Christmas debt to the Visa card! My makeover plan will incorporate a 7.1 ATMOS sound field once I make a decision on the receiver to replace my Denon AVR-1712 to drive it, but, new front and satellite speakers are on the shopping list. I am replacing some older Tannoy FX 5.1s that have a hard-to-beat 140Hz to 78kHz freq. response. Considering my senior ears probably aren't hearing much over 30kHz these days, the JBL Stage A130 and A135C have a high freq. response rating of 40kHz, which is very acceptable. The extended low end from the tuned ported cabinets adds some very nice depth to the front of my theater. With a power range of 20w - 150w and a nominal Sensitivity of 85db, I should have no limitation when receiver shopping. This JBL Stage series combo is bright, warm, and dynamic. I am very pleased to consider I made this choice online based on specs and the brand. If you're looking for quality speakers on a modest budget with an old and reliable brand name (like Crutchfield) - I recommend JBL.

My wife and I both have commented that we are now hearing things in songs that we had never noticed before, thanks to the clarity of these speakers. 100% satisfied with the sound quality for the money.
Pros: Clean, clear, crisp sounding

Left my scratching my head, ....
Crutchfield customer from Brownfield, TX on 1/1/2022
I was surprised by the clarity, balance and details, those speakers put out. excellent clarity, wide sound stage, center imaging and no distortion. Driven by a Rotel 1572 IA, they sound really pristine. I A/Bed them with my Linton's, and they really held their own. Compared to my studios 530's, I preferred their sound, same experience with my Klipsch RP-600's, ... Left me scratching my head.... Very good buy, the addition of a sub is optional depending on taste. You cannot go wrong at their price. I give them 5 stars.
Pros: balanced, excellent tone, and sound stage, no distortion
Cons: None.

JBL Stage A130 Review
Crutchfield customer from Glen Ellyn, IL on 12/28/2021
Bought these bookshelf speakers and matching center (A125C)and compared to ELAC 2.0 Debut 5.2 and matching center (C5.2). Compared to the ELACs, I thought the JBLs were much more lively and had a bit more punch to them. Drums had more "snap" and movies had a little more kick. ELACs sounded good, but were a little too laid back for me. For my music taste and use as fronts in a budget home theater, the JBLs worked out better for me. That being said, both speakers are very good options for a budget set up, just depends on your listening preferences.
Pros: Lively and punchy Good detail in highs Solid bass Full sound
Cons:

Superb speakers for size and price.
Crutchfield customer from Jeffersonton, VA on 12/27/2021
Bought these to compare to my Klipsch R-51 speakers (which I love) used in my AV surround system. I'm now using the JBL's for 2 channel stereo listening on an older Marantz 7000 receiver for music only. They punch way above their size and price point for stunning sound across the board. Highs and mids are clean and very well balanced. Bass is more than enough for me without requiring a sub, I'm definitely not a bass head so some folks might prefer a sub added. They definitely have more bass than the R-51's and are a bit warmer across the board for me. Though I'm by no means an audiophile, these for me are the closest speakers I've found to my favorite legacy RSL Towers that I've used for almost 20 years. In my opinion these are a no brainer, best for your buck buy.

I bought the stage a130s to replace a pair of Klipsch bookshelves that sounded a bit harsh in the highs. These JBLs have the clarity I was looking for and a surprising amount of bass for their size. They are not fatiguing and have no issues when they get loud. A truly pleasant surprise!

JBL Stage A130
Crutchfield customer from Stow, OH on 12/20/2021
I had smaller JBL satellite speakers that were almost 20 years old and it was time to upgrade. I thought something a little bigger would have more range than the tiny speakers I had. These were perfect and sound great. Just enough bass for music to sound better and movies sound awesome. I am sure there are better speakers but for the price and size these are great. I used these for the front R & L and the original satellite speakers for the rears. Perfect.
Pros: Great sound and range
Cons: Just a fraction bigger than I needed for my TV stand

Awesome speaker for the size and price.
Crutchfield customer from Crystal Lake, IL on 12/15/2021
Neutral and transparent enough to enjoy the music. I use them for music only. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of bass they produce. Also surprised at the sweet treble considering it has a metal dome tweeter. I find myself boosting the treble up to hear the sweet detail. Midrange is nice too, maybe leans a little to the warm side which makes them easy to listen to. They sound good no matter what genre of music you throw at them. Turn them up! They can handle it without coming unraveled. No really, turn them up more! They can handle it and really come to life, it will get your toes tapping or maybe even singing along! Maybe not the last word on details, but enough to hear that vinyl sounds better than cd's. Vinyl sounds sweeter and more full vs the dryness of digital. But the A130's sound good with either one you prefer. Tough to beat these at the price. Grab a pair, you might just like them!
Pros: Good bass, sweet treble, warm midrange, no listener fatigue, great price
Cons: Not the last word on details, but coherent and musical

Easy Recommendation
Dirk from St. Paul, MN on 12/4/2021
I was so impressed with the Stage A130 that I bought 2 pairs. I've listened to more speakers this year than I can remember and these have been my favorite. Listen with or without a subwoofer depending on your room size. Sound is clear with good staging and vocals. These speakers aren't too fussy about placement. Works well with any amplification I've tried, vintage or modern. Truly a versatile piece of gear that won't empty your wallet.
Pros: Sounds great Price Big soundstage
Cons: Removing the grilles is definitely a two handed operation. They fit super tight.

As many other people probably have mentioned, these speakers represent a great value. They offer exceptional imaging, sound stage and wonderful midrange performance. I would recommend using with a sub as they fall off on low end extension. These are fast and very entertaining. No fatigue here. Very nice.

Cons: Need sub to fully enjoy

As a professional musician and a composer and an audio enthusiast. I start to question the existence of expensive speakers after listening to these JB l's. Yes they're not the most elegant speakers I've ever seen. But the accuracy And flat response is pretty good. Keep looking for a great 2nd pair of speakers for small room look no further they're quite the bargain at any price.
Pros: Very good flat response answer imaging pretty accurate.

Very nice speakers
Crutchfield customer from Placerville, CA on 5/12/2021
The JBL Stage A130's are an excellent pair of bookshelf speakers. The highs are bright and clear without being too harsh. The mid range has warmth with good presence and is more than acceptable for a 2 way speaker. The bass is just great. It is tight, clear, musical and surprisingly powerful for a 5 -1/4 inch woofer. I have paired these with a Yamaha A-S301 integrated amplifier and an older JVC CD player. The fullness and the imaging of the sound is excellent. I was a bit disappointed with the Yamaha A-S301 amplifier's ability to reproduce highs with any brilliance or presence until I connected these speakers. The Yamaha now sounds very nice because of the JBL's. I have been a musician for a long time and everything from Beethoven to Yes sounds good on these speakers. I bought this system as a secondary studio set-up to my main home stereo. I quickly found I can easily sit, listen to these JBL's and just get lost in the music. At this price the sound and build quality will be hard to beat.

I got these speakers to put in my permanent practice room for our band to listen to music as we are learning. As any JBL would, these speakers (for their size) pack a punch with crisp highs and appropriate bass. The overall brilliance allows even the most subtle notes to be easily heard and duplicated. I have long outgrown speakers with overpowering bass that covers up the artistic makeup of songs. We use a JBL PA system as well.

Eric from Denver, CO on 3/12/2021
I'm thoroughly blown away and stoked on these speakers. The bass, bass roll off, and highs off of the tweeters are simply amazing for the price point on these bad boys, and I have 100 watts going to each speaker; therefore I've supplied plenty of power to them. They perform splendidly, and I have no regrets in buying them. If you want a bargain speaker that performs to the point of obtaining legitimate audiophile approval, then don't hesitate to pull the trigger on these and get them hooked up to your system. They won't disappoint you in the least. Again, I'm blown away and taken aback. If you're skeptical of what I'm trying to relate, then feel free to hit up YouTube and search for this model of speaker there. You'll find some worthy audiophile channels that discuss these in glowing and uncertain terms with quality sound stage demos. These. Speakers. Effing. Rip. Wow!
Pros: Great sound, gorgeous finish, stylish woofers in the solid-classic JBL motif. Great Price!
Cons: Nada.

JBL Stage A130
Crutchfield customer from Columbia, MO on 3/11/2021
I replaced a pair of Polk PT 25i speakers with this JBL system. Although the Polk speakers were decent quality, I noticed quickly that the JBLs had a more balanced sound overall. Probably because I have an older CD player (with less advanced DAC circuitry), there is a harshness in the sound sometimes. The Polk speakers rather intensely reproduced that harshness, while the JBLs moderate that effect somewhat. The Polk speakers seemed to emphasize deep bass sounds, an effect that was not unpleasant, but the JBL speakers also handle bass frequencies well, and provide what seems to me like a more organic sound. The JBL speakers are slightly bigger and heavier than the ones they replaced, rated for up to 120 watts of power, but they provide pleasing sound from the 50-watt system I own.
Pros: A refined sound, without undue emphasis at high or low frequencies; will accommodate more power than some bookshelf speakers.
Cons: None with the system being used to power them.
