New tunes for 2014 Honda Civic Si
Matthew from LOVES PARK, IL on 9/13/2023
2014 Honda Civic SI
I just installed this Kenwood head unit in my daughter's 2014 Civic Si, and I am mostly happy with it. I think that most of the problems that I have are tied to other components that were required for the installation, and not the head unit itself. It was fairly complicated because I wanted to maintain as many OEM vehicle features/functions as possible, so I needed to pair this with an iDatalink Maestro module, for which the instructions were a bit incomplete/confusing. Also, the Metra installation kit for this vehicle is not great and has some definite problems, but that's another review.

My installation experience
Robert from WATERTOWN, MA on 8/2/2023
2015 Honda Civic EX
I don't install something like this every day--in fact, per my Crutchfield purchase history, I do it once every 14 years. But I'm not an idiot, and I'd say I have average mechanical ability for an American male and an average number of tools. Installing this product in my 2015 Honda Civic took 8-9 hours. That includes 2 hours studying the installation instructions indoors and pre-mating whatever connectors could be joined in advance. This step is recommended in the Crutchfield installation videos and is important--do not skip it. I then had 2 sessions of about 3-4 hours each in the car. I imagine an experienced installer could do the whole thing n 2-3 hours but if you are not an experienced installer, this will not be your timing. There will probably be some frustrations--I had one frozen nut and 2 very difficult to reach screws in my first hour working in the car. Crutchfield installation support was excellent--I called them twice during the install and got a quick answer each time. And in the end the install was perfect. iDatalink or the Crutchfield ReadyHarness service is a must in my opinion--you do not want to hand mate all of the wires in a modern radio installation. I'm pleased with the DMX709S. Retaining the backup and lanewatch cameras was among my highest priorities for the install and they work well with this radio--maybe just a fraction of a second slower than the factory unit. HD Radio and Apple Car Play are quick and work flawlessly for me.

Frustration with factory Sirrius XM connection
Raymond from BRENHAM, TX on 7/29/2023
2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
This is a very nice stereo & the install was easy since the Crutchfield harness wiring service did the hard work and all I had to do was plug in the connections. It would have been nice to have some instructions as to the plug ins. The instructions on the stereo itself could have been much clearer about how to access the factory Sirius XM radio. After installing the radio I pressed the Sirius XM button and nothing happened. No service, no signal, nothing. So I took the dash back apart and installed a new Sirius XM tuner which I wasn't supposed to need, but had ordered anyway and hoped to return. After getting Sirrius XM $15 to activate the new radio I was dissappointed that the stereo hadn't worked with my factory Sirrius XM as advertised but happy to have the service back. Later when scrolling through the various functions of the stereo I came across a button that showed information about my vehicle. Buried within that button was another Sirrius XM button. Seriously, a second Sirrius XM radio button. This second button didn't have the Sirrius XM big blue logo, but it pointed to my original factory Sirrius XM service. A better set of instructions from the Kenwood people might have avoided my issue. I found later was a vague statement on page 10 under source/option keys called OEM Features which says "Switches to the source connected via ADS adapter". Perhaps if the ADS adapter or if Crutchfield had mentioned it. But no... silence and frustration ruled. Come on man, do better
Pros: Decent interface. Takes some to learn it and isn't perhaps as intutive as one would hope but after a while you'll get the hang of it. Good sound. Good connection via car plan and by bluetooth to my phone. So far I'm happy with it, and will be happier once the frustration with the connection to the factory Sirruis XM radio wears off. Some glare issues, but not bad despite the blazing bright summer sun.
Cons: Lack of sufficient information about the connection of the factory Sirrius XM radio. Burying the factory Sirrius XM radio button beneath the vehicle information button and not being able to use the big blue Sirrius XM radio button to access the factory Sirrius XM radio is very frustrating. Luckily I bought the separate Sirruis XM radio tuner as a part of my package out of paranoia, though I had hoped to return it. Taking the dash apart a second time to resolve the issue was loads of fun.

Only things preventing a 5-star is that the screen is BRIGHT. I have at lowest setting and it still too bright at night. It can go down to -15, which is still irritating at night and makes it a lil harder to see the road ahead. Why not just make it go almost dark? Like your cars gauges on the dimmer? Like make -30 the lowest or something. Would cost just a couple lines of code? arg.
Pros: HD radio, clear screen, shows album art on st radio
Cons: BRIGHT screen even on lowest setting

When I get an EAS message it bugs the unit and causes continuous resets. Other reviewers have reported the same issue so I think it's a bug in the radio. I would not recommend buying this one until they can confirm this problem is fixed.
Pros: Nice features, good sound.
Cons: Buggy firmware causes the unit to reset when EAS test messages are sent out once a month. On testing days, you basically can't use the radio.

We replaced a Kenwood excelon unit with this model because we wanted Apple carplay. Well we also wanted to keep the 5v pre outs for a simple swap over. Anyway the new unit is quite hot and required going to the amps to re-adjust inputs gain settings. Wow this system is on fire. After a thorough dyon-run, crossover settings eq and fine tune this system sounds excellent. Happy with the touch screen and versatility of settings.
Pros: All the same connectors and high quality feel and touch
Cons: We had to drill holes in the frame box deal. Not exactly sure what it's called but good luck trying to steal this unit.

Great head unit. Fairly easy to navigate through. The unit is responsive to the touch and has all the features you can ask for. Love the fact that it reads obd2 information. Sound quality is on par with all the other head unit in its price range. For price and features this really is a quality head unit for the money.
Pros: Responsive screen Features Easy to navigate
Cons: My only dislike about it is when in reverse there is a reminder message that tells you to check surroundings before reversing. Kind of annoying cause it's not transparent and takes up some of the view of the camera. Other than that I wish it had a volume knob but that's just preference.

I was looking for a capacitive touchscreen head unit to pair with an aftermarket rear view camera. I have had Kenwood Excelon head units that I really liked in two previous vehicles, so I expected that I would really dig this one as well. The DMX709S works well enough-most of the time. However, I have experienced some annoying glitches. The main example is an issue with EAS messages that pop-up on the screen. This occurs 3-4 times per month. The message will display, and then all system settings are reset. This was especially frustrating until I figured out how to save/store my preferred AV settings. I have also experienced a few instances of the head unit restarting over and over until I disconnect my iPhone. That being said, the audio performance alone is 5 star. In my view, the aforementioned issues and dated UI cost it a couple of stars.
Pros: Great audio quality and really solid built-in amp; touchscreen works very well; very good picture; vast audio customization; shallow chassis allows for easier install,l
Cons: IMHO, resets too frequently for a HU of this brand/line and at this price; due to shallow chassis, sits a bit deeper within the dash than I would prefer

I just installed this unit in my 2006 Chrysler 300C, so this is a first impression review. First impressions are, this is a great car stereo for the money, It was simple to set up with Crutchfield's help. I would definitely recommend this unit. Along with the iDatalink Maestro I was able to get the steering wheel controls working without a problem. I was also able to use my OEM satellite radio antenna with an adapter (into the SiriusXM SXV300V1 Tuner) , and the OEM GPS Antenna plugged right into the back of the Stereo. Both work great. Very pleased that I didn't need to mount another antenna. It is a nice clean looking stereo . Screen is bright enough in daylight and has enough adjustment to personalize. My personal opinion is the interface and screen are nicer than the other stereos I saw in this price range. The interface could use some minor improvements, but I am being picky. Controls are easy to use and program. Though I keep reaching for the volume knob of my old stereo (old habits..) Sound is great, even out of the OEM speakers and OEM amplifier. A lot of sound option controls, including the 13 band equalizer. Back up camera system works well and the backup lines are easily adjustable to fit your camera and vehicle. Android Auto (this unit is not wireless), and bluetooth music work well. I am giving this 5 stars for a great stereo in its price range, with great features and lots of options.
Pros: Clean looks Lots of Features and Options Bright Customizable Screen and Buttons Good Sound Equalizer Price Warranty Crutchfield Sales and Support very helpful

Installed in 2011 Camaro convertible that has a JL Audio 5 channel amp, new speakers and sub. I replaced the Pioneer head unit (from 2019) where no matter what I did I couldn't get good sound. After replacing with this Kenwood the entire system sounded soooo much better straight out of the box. Haven't changed too many of the sound settings yet but I'm extremely happy. I have a wireless CarPlay dongle so I didn't go for the unit that has wireless built in else I would recommend going for that unit.
Pros: Really good price point for a quality head unit. Configuring home screen is easy. Works perfectly with add-on Sirius XM module.
Cons: No buttons - all controls on touchscreen, so driving and knowing where to press correctly take practice. Too easy to take eyes off the road for some functions.

Great unit!

2012 Chrysler Town and Country
I just installed this radio, and I am very happy with it. I have very little experience in installing car audio, the closest I did was install a remote starter a few months ago. The instructions were helpful, but not great. The instructions for the various harnesses/adapters that were needed for the install were basically useless, but I managed to figure it out, so maybe they weren't that useless. I installed this radio in a 2012 Chrysler Town and Country. I added on the SIRIUS/XM adapter and installed the HDMI cable as well (available separately). I installed this mainly to be able to use Apple Carplay and for the GPS apps. I kept the factory speakers. I figured out all the wiring and adapters, etc and plugged everything in. I was happily surprised that everything worked! I had fully expected to be spending hours with the Crutchfield experts, but the install went very smooth. I was VERY impressed with the sound quality. I wasn't expecting much due to having the factory speakers, but I was mistaken. The stereo was powerful and sounds great. I am no audiophile, but I do plan on installing aftermarket speakers in the near future. I am thrilled with this unit and would highly recommend it, and Crutchfield as well!
Pros: Great sound, good value, great quality,
Cons: Installation Instructions need some work

Even with Elroy's excellent support, trying to navigate the upload/download and vague wiring instruction for two days was exhausting and had not made any progress i have moved in another direction. Wish the process would have been easier for me to follow and implement
Pros:
Cons: very complicated idatalink interface process and wiring direction were genetic and not specific for my application

William from Arlington, VA on 11/21/2022
2011 Ford F-250
So far I love my Kenwood head unit with idatalink Maestro. Good sound and I like the GUI and all it's custom stuff you can do with OEM controls. I only wish it had wireless Apple CarPlay. Install was OK BUT, if your Maestro is flashing red DO NOT leave it plugged into the system. It will kill your battery big time! Make sure it's all green. Also it would have be good to know I had to modify the mounting bracket before I had it all wired up and in the car.
Pros: Sound Custom features GUI
Cons: Understand that you will have to modify some things on install. If Maestro is flashing red, be sure to remove it from the system for face a very dead battery soon.

Crutchfield made the process of installing this radio easy. This receiver has many great features, too many to list in the limited space. What I can say is wow. The price on this receiver is what makes this affordable. I installed this receiver in a 2006 dodge ram 1500 with four speaker system.
Pros: The receiver fit my space without major modifications with many great features.
Cons: I can't think of any cons to this unit.

Entry-Level Unit with iDatalink Maestro port
Thomas from Ashburn, VA on 10/22/2022
Installed this unit into a 2015 Toyota Highlander Limited with JBL and parking sensors using an iDatalink Maestro RR Interface Module. The reason I chose this product was the price and the iDatalink port, which retains most vehicle settings and information that are then accessible/readable through the radio when using the above said module utilizing the vehicles OBD2/CAN bus connection. Overall, the unit is not bad, but unfortunately some of the OEM features only worked intermittently (parking sensors) or not at all (system beeps). Additionally, some of the information was incorrect, such as the location of tires and pressure. The unit started randomly to reset itself to its factory settings, which required a whole new setup (time, equalizer, etc.) each instance. As there is a high-level of screen glare when it is bright out, the pictures I provided were taken at night. Ultimately, I have decided to return the unit and replace it with Alpine's ILX-507. Throughout the whole process, everyone at Crutchfield was very helpful and knowledgeable and made the return/exchange very easy and fast, which is the primary reason to purchase from Crutchfield.
Pros: - iDatalink Maestro port - Pricepoint - Crutchfield customer service & technical support
Cons: - Software glitches - Screen glare

USB mirroring has been grayed out since installation. Made 2 calls to support and their solutions has not solved the issues. A strongly-featured and reasonably-priced head unit. But that doesn't mean you'll miss out on anything here. Kenwood's Excelon DMX709S has everything you need and want; CarPlay (Android Auto if you lean that way) Bluetooth and HD radio. Didn't apply to me, but also has support for two (three, with extra accessories) camera inputs too. Installed in my 2008 Audi TT roadster
Pros: Solid value, solid performer
Cons: I wish the iDataLink Maestro wasn't needed, adding another layer of complexity. But if you want those steering wheel controls, well...

Kenwood DMX709S & Accessories
George from Wake Forest, NC on 9/14/2022
2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid
Let me preface this review by saying I am not a "car audio guy". I haven't installed a car stereo in 20+ years. And I would have been fine letting that streak continue, but the radio in my 2012 Camry opted for early retirement, and I'm not so old I don't still need to rock. The purchasing process through Crutchfield was great. They made it easy -- told me what options would fit in my car, and what accessories I needed to ensure everything worked the way I wanted it to. Very much the easy button for car audio shopping. The install process was not as smooth. Again, this isn't something I do often, and having fat fingers didn't seem to help. After some youtube video tutorials, and a LOT of trial and error, I finally got most of it working. What didn't work was the reverse camera interrupt when the car was put in reverse. Crutchfield tech support to the rescue! Ended up having to splice a wire from the car harness directly into one of the wires from the radio. Never would have figured that out myself, but Zeke knew exactly what to do, and now all is working great! Questions: Where is Kenwood telling us to mount the microphone? I have no idea what the picture in the manual is trying to tell me. Does the GPS antenna do anything besides 'assist' with setting the time? Don't understand why it can't account for DST either. So, yeah, aside from a few nitpicky things, I'm very happy with my purchase and Crutchfield experience.
Pros: I now have a functional radio again that interfaces with my car's built in USB BlueTooth works great Loving the Android Auto feature Being able to display front & rear cameras while driving is neat, but probably not a great idea Still getting used to the interface and settings - haven't tried playing video or some of the other more advanced features Hindsight being 20/20 and all that, I probably would have highly considered upgrading to the DMX907s simply for having wireless a
Cons: As other reviews have noted, the "American International TOYK981 Dash Kit" finish is a matte black that doesn't really blend with the shiny black of the other trim Car came with rear camera, but no front. Since the unit supports a front camera, picked up the "Boyo VTL17LTJ". It might be user error, but I can't find any obvious setting in the unit to fix the display of the front camera -- things on the left are displayed on the right and vice versa if that makes sense.

Good sounding unit
Jon from Lancaster, CA on 9/9/2022
Sound is pretty good and it looks pretty good installed. It's also easy to use. Overall I am happy with it and would recommend despite the cobs listed below. Cons: don't understand why an external GPS antenna is required. As near as i can tell its only to pull time. The unit should pull it from the phone or leave it manual (which you have the option for) Second thing, it uses an external mic for phone conversation. Other units have a mic built in. The sound has been reported as good. Third, the front camera requires an external power source. So to use it I have to select it on the unit then activate a separate switch. I don't know why kenwood couldn't add in a power wire so the user can turn the canera on by selecting it on the radio.
Pros: Good sound
Cons: Extra mic and GPS means more work to install and not really necessary. Can't activate front camera from radio.

Great Features, Nightmare Installation
Guest from Port Orchard, WA on 9/4/2022
2005 Honda Civic SI
I was really excited for this unit, as it combines all the best features into a compact multimedia-only chassis. This is about where it ended for me. The issue with this deck, in particular, lies with the installation. Traditionally, the screens/faceplates on decks protrude about a cm to 1/2" from the chassis. Whether that be to accommodate for a removable feature or motor, that's just how they've always been. Because of this, dash kit manufacturers design their kits with that in mind. So, on a previous model screen, if you want to flush mount it, all you need to do is adjust the mounting points by recessing the deck until it sits flush. THIS unit's screen only protrudes a few millimeters. While that SEEMS like a good idea, when you fit it to a double-din dash kit or OEM cutout, it will sit recessed in the dash, unless the trim piece or dash is also only a few mm thick. Unfortunately, most are much thicker, so you have so modify extensively if you want to flush mount this, potentially risking damaging the dash/trim. Furthermore, because of this screen design, the unit's shallow chassis also works against it. As mentioned above, screens that are thicker often require you to recess it to mount flush. This one potentially requires you to push it farther out, especially on angled dashes. Due to few threaded holes on the side of the chassis, you may not be able to mount it as far out as you need. Tl;Dr - Great features. Consider your install before purchasing.
Pros: CarPlay/Android Auto HD Radio Customizable button color 5V Preouts Shallow Chassis
Cons: Nightmare to install in some applications Only one USB input

Nice Upgrade
Chris from Sterling, VA on 9/3/2022
2004 Toyota Sienna
I bought the Kenwood Excelon DMX709S in order to update my Sienna van. Toyotas will keep running for a long time, but the factory sound system was starting to seem pitifully quaint. This unit had almost all the features I was looking for at a reasonable price. After using this for about a month I can say that it works really well. The Android Auto works smoothly and reliably. It took a little while to get set up, but that was not due to the Kenwood but due to my phone. I was on the line with a Crutchfield expert for about 30 minutes before we found an obscure setting on my phone which was preventing the connection. I think most people will not have this problem. The HD Radio is a big plus for me. This was the only unit I found with HD at this price point. When a station first comes on, it is analog for a couple seconds before switching to digital. The difference is significant. I was a little disappointed in Crutchfield's Ready Harness service. (No reflection on the Kenwood) I ordered the receiver along with a backup camera and a steering wheel control adapter. The steering wheel adapter arrived only wired for power and the backup camera was not wired at all. I had to cut and splice the harness to wire in the camera and had to do some improvising to get the steering wheel control connected. Crutchfield really should have supplied the connector to plug into the steering wheel controls. The telephone support was invaluable, though, and it all worked out.
Pros: HD Radio Android Auto works great Works smoothly, once you get it configured
Cons: Does not have a volume on/off knob.

This is a really nice head unit. I have a couple of CarPlay-compatible head units from JVC and Soundstream Reserve which are really good, but this one is a bit better. One thing I would like to see added is the capability to put shortcuts on the home screen for frequently used features. I use the front camera feature when parking my vehicles so being able to get to this without having to go through several button presses to get to it would be awesome.
Pros: Slim, responsive, feature packed
Cons: Getting to features like the camera appears to require several button presses from the home screen. I would like to see the ability to create shortcuts on the home screen for the most frequently used features.

Originally purchased Alpine ILX-W650. Was a nice head unit but had compatibility issues with factory Bose amp and speakers. Swapped with this Kenwood unit and it now sounds amazing. Considerably more bass and clarity than the factory head unit and 10000% better than the Alpine unit. If you have a GM 2007-2014 with Bose no NAV, this is the way to go. Was happy with the factory setup until the factory head unit died. The Bose amp and speakers always sounded pretty good but now they are next level. Was thrilled that we didn't have to buy a new amp, speakers and sub. Install was super easy outside of the parking brake sensor splice. However, Crutchfield support was amazing and patient and sent diagrams and how to videos to make sure that connection was made correctly and securely. Without Crutchfield support it would have been a huge fishing expedition to figure out how to connect the parking brake wire (which allows setup function for equalizer and other audio setup options when brake is applied).
Pros: Sound quality, ease of use, intuitive.
Cons: None

Adds key features to an older car
Crutchfield customer from Cary, NC on 8/15/2022
2011 Honda Fit
I just installed this in a 2011 Honda Fit with the goal of adding Apple CarPlay and HD Radio. So far so good. I could take part of a star off for the manual not explaining exactly where the antenna adapter plugged in, there is one unlabeled cable/connector hanging off the back that I used by process of elimination. There is an included microphone and GPS receiver, the manual briefly mentions the microphone is used for the voice features (Siri on my iPhone), and the clock can apparently be set from the GPS. I don't know if that GPS attempts to improve the GPS reception of the phone when using it for navigation, or if it has a purpose with Bluetooth, but I went ahead and connected both of these to be complete. Everything is working fine so far. Installation was pretty straightforward, but I do wish there was more information on suggestions of where to run the GPS / microphone / USB port (either what holes to run the cables through or the best places / methods to create such a hole), and it took a lot of my own searching to figure out what to do with the parking brake cable (whose primary purpose seems to be access to setting up / connecting phones through Bluetooth) as the Crutchfield docs only discussed how to do the physical splice into the wire (I love the connectors provided for this!) but not how to locate the wire. But the receiver itself is doing exactly what I wanted, and I am very happy to have CarPlay and HDRadio in this car.
Pros: - CarPlay and HDRadio work great! - Bright display, good resolution
Cons: - Microphone, GPS, and USB port need mounting and cables run through the dash
