About the Kenwood Excelon X802-5

Buck Pomerantz

This tiny amp will power your whole system

Need more power for your entire system, but lack space? Kenwood's Excelon X802-5 five-channel amplifier delivers 50 watts RMS to each of your front and rear speakers, while sending up to 500 watts RMS to a sub, yet it'll still fit almost anywhere in your vehicle. You can also use this amp in 3-channel mode to power a pair of high-performance speakers with 150 watts RMS each, and a sub with 500 watts.

Fine-tuning included

High-and low-pass filters let you optimize the sound for your vehicle and speakers. For the subwoofer channel, a precise low-pass filter lets you optimize the sound for your sub, while the built-in bass boost lets you dial in just the right amount of thump. An optional wired remote control lets you control your sub's level from the front seat.

Convenient technology

Class D technology ensures that this compact amp will run cool and perform reliably. Kenwood divided the amp's internal circuitry — analog, digital, and power supply — onto separate, non-overlapping circuit boards for improved overall sound quality. The X802-5 accepts input signals via RCA cables from an aftermarket receiver or by way of your vehicle's speaker wiring, so it'll work with almost any mobile audio system. If you do use the speaker-level inputs, the amp can sense the signal and turn itself on, so you won't need to run a separate remote turn-on lead to the receiver or fuse box.

Product Research

CEA-2006 Compliant: CEA-2006 is a system of testing and measurement for mobile audio amplifiers. This voluntary standard advocates a uniform method for measuring an amplifier's RMS power output. The criteria for measuring power uses a DC input voltage of 14.4 volts and the RMS power output is measured over a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz (for full range amplifiers), with 1% or less Total Harmonic Distortion plus noise (THD+N). Signal-to-Noise ratio is measured in weighted absolute decibels (dBA) at a reference of 1 watt into 4 ohms. CEA-2006 standards allow consumers to compare car amplifiers and receivers under the same conditions (apples to apples).

CEA-2006 Specifications:

  • Power Output: 50 watts RMS x 4 + 300 watts RMS x 1 into 4Ω
  • Signal to Noise Ratio: 80 dBA (measured at 1 watt into 4Ω)

Other Specifications: (not using the CEA 2006 criteria)

  • Power Output:
    • 2Ω: 75 watts RMS x 4 (at 1 kHz, 14.4 volts, ≤1.0% THD) + 500 watts RMS x 1 (at 100 Hz, 14.4 volts, ≤1.0% THD)
    • Bridged: 150 watts RMS x 2 (into 4Ω, at 1 kHz, 14.4 volts, ≤1.0% THD) + 300 watts RMS x 1 (into 4Ω, 20-200 Hz, 14.4 volts, ≤1.0% THD)
  • Signal to Noise Ratio: 100 dB (at rated power output)

Channel Layout: The 5-channel amplifier is effectively three amps built into one chassis, two 2-channel amps labeled A (left and right) and B (left and right), and a mono amp labeled Sub. Both the A and B channels are bridgeable, so it can be wired as 5-channel, 4-channel, or 3-channel.

Class D Amplifier Design: The amplifier design is Class D, which uses digital switching power supplies. The result is the amplifier runs more efficiently, generating less heat than Class AB amps. The Class D design also allows the amplifier to be built on a small chassis, and installed where space is limited.

Signal Sensing: The amplifier has a signal-sensing turn-on circuit on the speaker level input. When a signal (up to 50 watts) is detected on the speaker level inputs, the amplifier will automatically power on. When the signal is no longer detected, the amp will turn off. This allows you to install the amplifier without a remote turn-on lead if the speaker level input is used.

Controls: The X802-5 features independent controls for the A channels (front), B channels (rear), and Sub channel. Each set of channels has independent controls:

  • Input Sensitivity: The Input Sensitivity controls let you match the amplifier input to the preamp output level of the source unit. The rotary controls let you adjust the sensitivity between 200mV (0.2V) and 5V, with markings at 0.2V, 0.3V, 0.5V, 1V, 2V, 3V, 4V, and 5V.
  • Crossovers: The A and B amp sections have high-pass crossovers. A two position switch allows bypassing the crossover (Off, HPF). The crossover slope is 12dB per octave and the crossover point is continuously variable from 50Hz to 200Hz. The Sub channel low-pass crossover is always active (cannot be bypassed). The crossover slope is 24dB per octave and the crossover point is also continuously variable from 50Hz to 200Hz.
  • Bass Boost (Sub channel only): The Bass Boost increases the bass signal of the Sub channel, centered at 40Hz. The rotary control lets you adjust the boost between 0dB and 18 dB.
  • Input Selector: The Input Selector switch lets you set the input for the sub channel. Select Sub if there is a dedicated input for the sub channel, or AB if there is no input for the sub channel (there is an input for the A and B channels). In this case, the sub channel will be fed the signal from the A and B channels.

  • Line In: The X802-5 has three pair of line level RCA inputs, A, B, and Sub. The amp will accept a signal between 200mV and 5V.
  • Power/Ground/Remote Turn-on: The amplifier has screw terminals for the power, ground, and remote turn-on, and will accommodate spade connectors. The power and ground terminals are 0.55" wide and the remote turn-on terminal is 0.34" wide.
  • Speaker Output: Five pair of screw terminals are provided for connecting the speakers. The terminals are 0.34" wide, and accommodate spade connectors. The amplifier is designed for a 4Ω load, but can handle a 2Ω load.
  • Speaker Level Input: When an RCA line level signal is not available, use the included 8" speaker level input harness.
  • Fuses: Three 30-amp ATC fuses are installed in the amplifier. With the 90-amp fuse rating, a 4-gauge amplifier wiring kit is recommended with a 90-amp (minimum) fuse installed within 18" of the battery.
  • Remote: The RJ-14 connection is for the optional KCA-RC01A wired remote control (item number 113RC01A, sold separately), allowing Sub channel output level adjustment from the front of your vehicle.

Would this Amp be sufficient for stock headunit on 2007 Toyota Corolla CE non jbl system paired with two 6x9 Alpine R speakers? or will I need to replace the headuntil also.
op1vet  Feb 26, 2024
1 answer
Greetings Holden. Thank you for your question. Would the aftermarket stereo process they audio better and more full range than your factory radio? Absolutely, but this amp can still be wired t a factory radio as well. You just need to cut the 8 speaker wires from the factory radio wire plug.
hogan  Feb 26, 2024 (Staff)
Is the speaker level input good enough with a factory head unit from a 2021 VW Jetta? Or should I still get a line out converter and use the line level inputs to run 12" sub with 4x 50W speakers?
grayson1381  May 18, 2023
1 answer
The speaker-level inputs would be sufficient in the base-model audio system in a 2021 VW Jetta. This isn't to say that further improvement wouldn't be made by using a digital signal processor or EQ. The more complex Beats version of the 2021 Jetta would require additional considerations. Please reach out to our advisors via online chat or phone at 1-800-324-9695 for further help with this project.

Are the channels independent of each other? Like, can the amp run two channels at 75 watts RMS@2ohms and two channels at 50 watts RMS@4ohms?
eric  Oct 11, 2022
1 answer
Yes you can run the front pair' ohm load and wattage independently of the rear's on that amp.
arielle  Oct 11, 2022 (Staff)
Can this amp bridge one side while still powering two separate speakers on the other? In other words, powering two speakers at 50w, one at 150w plus a subwoofer?
david  Aug 22, 2022
1 answer
I don't see any reason why not, David! I see no special notes from Kenwood about having to bridge both channels at the same time, etc... so this should function. This will really only work well if the one speaker you are bridging from channels 3 and 4 is full range. Since there is only high pass crossover capability on channels 3 and 4 you would not be able to use those for say, a mid bass driver in a 3 way active setup. If you are planning on powering a single passive speaker bar or other full range speaker this should work. I hope this helps!

I'm having an amp and sub professionally installed. I plan to buy 4 focal speakers from you and install them myself. Rms rating of the amp and speakers is the same @ 50 rms. Is the factory wiring sufficient for this power or should I go with a bigger gauge wire? If so, what gauge? '22 Nissan Frontier crewcab. Thanks, Steve
steve  Jul 22, 2022
1 answer
Since you'll be using a higher powered amp we do recommend upgrading your stock speaker wire to 16 gauge wire. Most stock systems use 20-18 gauge wire and with the power increase from the amp you'll want to use a thicker gauge wire that can handle the wattage of the amp. If you're hooking up a sub woofer to the sub channel you'll want to use 12 gauge wire for the sub.
allison  Jul 22, 2022 (Staff)
I'm using 4 ohm speakers for the 4 front channels. I want to add two subwoofers to the SUB output. Should I get a pair of 2-ohm or 4-ohm subs? Is it correct that if I go to 2-ohm subs, I need to get a pair that can handle 500RMS and if I get 4-ohm subs, I need to get a pair that can handle 300RMS??? TIA

I want to replace my Kicker 46CXA660.5T 5 channel amp with the Kenwood Excelon X802-5 5 channel Amp. Can I use my current wiring and swap the amps out?

daniel des  Jan 11, 2022
I would assume so. RCA's should be the same, speaker wiring the same, sub wiring the same. I mean I would look at the install instructions on the site but I unless there is some connection specific to kicker, I couldn't imagine why not. Just my $.02

Is there an amp rack kit for this amplifier? Iâ??d like to mount it under my truck seat but would like to pick it up off the floor to get more air around the amp for better cooling
kevin  Dec 13, 2021
4 answers
Yes. They are sites that make amp racks for Ford F-150 and Ram 1500. Do a google search. Don't know about other trucks.
vladimir  Dec 22, 2021
Not sure about amp rack kit. But I mounted mine to an aluminum plate, and attached to a rear seat bolt. I raised the back of the seats about 3/4 of an inch with spacers and larger bolts. I also have a usb powered fan blowing on my amp. I've had no problems.
david  Dec 14, 2021
I just bent up some 1"bar stock and made a quick amp rack to mount behind my F-350s rear seat.
larry  Dec 14, 2021
I mounted this Amp on a carpeted board under passenger front seat.. put the wiring toward the front, so that no one would hit with their feet. Protects the wires. This a class d Amp and doesn't give off much heat. Have never has a heat problem. You could always add rubber feet under the Amp if you are worried.
michael d  Dec 14, 2021
How many volts can the high level inputs accept? The manual does not indicate it.
john  Nov 11, 2021
1 answer
The high level inputs have a 50 watt RMS maximum on the power they can take in. The volt maximum is linked to the low level inputs and that tops out at 5 volts

Do I need an audio controller LCI7?
fredy  Apr 08, 2021
1 answer
Yes for a factory head unit. But not for an aftermarket head unit. A factory head unit will work, but it will not produce a clean enough signal to optimize sound quality by itself.

Is the sub channel 1ohm stable? Can you run 2 12's @2ohms
rodney  Jan 21, 2021
1 answer
No, the amplifier is only 2-ohm stable on all channels.
thomas  Feb 09, 2021 (Staff)
Can i run 4 ohm speakers and a 2 ohm sub with this amp? Or does it have to be ether all 2 ohm or 4 ohm speakers and subs?

This Amp is basically 3 amps in one per Kenwood. I am running 4 door speakers at 4ohm and a Kicker 8 inch square sub at 2 ohms on the sub out. This has been running great for almost a year. Love the bass control know. Makes it easy to change to bass output qhick and easy. I have e recommended this Amp to other friends. A lot of power in a small package.
michael d  Feb 04, 2021
Yes, all channels are 2 ohm capable and can be run any configuration. So to answer your question yes you can run 4 ohm speakers and a 2 ohm sub.
steve  Feb 04, 2021
Can you wire this as a 4 channel amp for 4 speakers using the sub channel for more wattage? It sounds great, but am considering getting a separate mono amp and a larger sub setup
connor  Dec 12, 2020
1 answer
It is not possible to take the power from the sub channel to increase the power for the speakers. A different amp setup is needed to increase the power to the speakers. We have advisors here that you can reach by calling 1-800-324-9695 who will be happy to discuss your gear and recommend the best amp setup for it.
jason  Dec 23, 2020 (Staff)
What size power wire is needed to install this amp?
jason  Oct 14, 2020

You should buy a good quality 4 gauge wire for both power amd ground.
michael d  Oct 15, 2020
Can the 5th channel be used to power one dual voice coil 12"? If so how would I wire it please?
jeff  Oct 03, 2020

Hi, I have an alternator that outputs 75 amps and was wondering if this amplifier was going to be drawing too much power for it to handle. I plan on running all 4 speakers at about 75 watts and a sub at 500 watts. Should I only be worrying about this if the cars not running or if I have the music cranked all the way 24/7? Thanks
john  Jul 17, 2020
1 answer
My 802-5 is in my truck with 140 amp alternator. Now my wife's vehicle has the 302-4 kenwood amp and another old school 400w kenwood amp with a 75 amp alternator works fine. I wish crutchfield would allow me to show a picture of this. So my best answer is I think you'll be fine. You could upgrade to a bigger amp alternator later if need be. Hope this helps. Allen Toetly

Yes. Running the Amp that way now.. sounds gteat
michael d  Feb 04, 2021
It seems to me you should be able to configure it that way. Look into the owners manual they publish on line.

Will this power two 12 inch kicker solo baric shallow mount 2 ohm subs and the rest of my components properly?
chris  Apr 03, 2020
1 answer
IT will supply 500 watts which is probably low for those subs. Id want something more in the 1000 watts for two 2 ohm subs. That being said they will work, jsut the base will sound sloppy and un powerful at high volume

Connected to a factory Hyundai 2018 head unit using high level inputs. Turn on is provided via the high level input as well. It senses through the inputs to turn the amp. Excellent idea. Makes easier to install. Sound is awesome. We changed out the four door speakers and added a Kicker 8 inch square shallow mount sub. Does a great job.
michael d  Oct 15, 2020
I didn't pair this amp up with a factory radio but the sound quality is excellent.
