Definitely buy this with your stereo purchases
Tyler from Normal, IL on 6/23/2024
2003 Subaru Forester
Made the installation process a breeze. I've wired up various things to my cars before and with the manuals provided there was no guessing of which wires get connected to the stereo harness. Only reason for 4/5 rather than 5/5 is upon install the power wire was not fully seated into the Metra connector causing it to come loose and fall out. Quick fix to re-install the pin but should have been checked before shipping.

Fits as advertised
Nathan from VALENCIA, CA on 12/2/2020
2002 Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS
It fit my 2002 Subaru Impreza just fine, and made connecting my system easy because I could pre-wire almost everything ahead of time. I'd highly recommend using a soldering iron and heat shrink tubing for the best connections, and map out any extra wires you may need to add to the harness (subwoofer power, backup light circuit, emergency brake switch, etc.). The more wiring you can do before climbing around inside the car, the happier you'll be.
Pros: Fits my car as advertised. Good quality wiring.

As always, a great bit of hardware, no issues connecting it to the stereo harness and wiring it up. A good wire stripper makes it go faster, along with no-crimp connectors and some electrical tape to tidy it all up when you're done.
Pros: It's what you need. Get it.

Easy as pie
Dennis from Fallon, NV on 11/26/2018
2004 Subaru Legacy
This adapter is an excellent way to replace factory equipment but what I want to praise are the Crutchfield instructions that come with it. They told me, with photos, which pieces of trim to remove in order, and it was a breeze. After installing my new unit I discovered I had speaker problems. The instructions were a life-saver. Step-by-step instructions, again with photos of what appeared to be my car, showed me how to remove the door panels and speakers. The adapter costs $13. I would have paid more than that for the instructions alone.
Pros: Using an adapter is, obviously, the only way to go Instructions, instructions, instructions

So simple even I can do it!
Ben from Fort Collins, CO on 8/24/2017
1996 Subaru Legacy
Crazy simple to use and install. Even I, who has minuscule electrical experience/knowledge, was able to use this in my stereo installation and I didn't even shock myself once! My only qualm (and it's one that is partially my fault and possibly partially the industries fault) is I had difficulty recognizing the power cable because the one on my head unit was more of a deep red while the corresponding one on this harness was a distinctly different color, basically pink. Therefore I (who honestly didn't read the instructional harness diagram too closely) didn't connect the power cables together at first and had to pull the unit back out and try again. But it was a good lesson learned.
Pros: Simple. Straightforward. Only took me a second try because I didn't read the instructions closely enough the first time.
Cons: Different color on the power cable (but it could be different brands doing their own thing) so I didn't catch those two at first.

Good but missing the dimmer wire

The harness has a high wire count and each wire labeled which is great. The back of the plastic bag it comes in has the legend for each wire which is a nice touch too. My only issue is that the harness did not come with a dimmer wire: pin 14. The only reason it gets three stars is because of the missing wire.
Pros: Labels on the wires Legend of the wires on the bag high wire count per wire

This product is amazing! I loved how the color codes matched my head unit color codes! It was a easy install. My only wish is that there was information on the car's illumination system because, I want my head unit to dim with the car system but the head unit has a dimmer wire and that is not cross compatible with most head units. They are the same color and it could cause some confusion. all the information about the installation of the head unit was incredibly easy to understand and I got my head unit installed in about an hour. Great product! I always purchase from crutch field! I have for all 3 of my cars now!
Pros: Instructions make installation easy. There are pictures; however, you will need a flashlight. It's mostly plug and play.
Cons: There is a lack of information on dimmer and illumination wires. It's hard to make it look like a factory job.

If you would like an easy install of an aftermarket radio and connecting it to the factory wiring harness, then you need to get this wiring adapter. It was very easy to install and only took about 5-10 minutes. I do recommend soildering and heat shrinking your wires together.
Pros: Easy to follow instructions and hooks directly up to the factory wiring.
Cons: There are none

Works great. It took a while to make all of the connections to the factory harness, but we wanted them nice & tight so that we don't have issues in the future. Once that was done, it's just a matter of snapping it into place, and you're good to go.
Pros: Fits well, works well

PERFECT wiring harness
gstel from Cherry Hill, NJ on 5/4/2016
2006 Subaru Forester
I always use Metra when using harnesses. The wire colors were exact matches to the radio harness so its basically, strip back wires, match color, solder (to make GOOD connections as opposed to only using electrical tape or taps) and tape wires up. Good to go
Pros: Matched perfectly wiring colors
Cons: none!

After some research with the radio wiring diagrams (both the Subaru and Kenwood wiring) and determining the which positions matched which functions, I determined that, except for the illumination connection, all the wiring on both connectors matched by color. So making the connections was fairly easy and everything worked as expected.
Pros: Wiring kit contained everything necessary to complete the connections.

perfect fit for replacing stock headunit on a 06 Baja. Really makes the job easier. I chose to solder the leads from my new head unit (avic-8100nex) to the leads on the harness and put heat shrink over the connection -- pretty easy task.
Pros: works
Cons: not a really a con -- but my 06 Baja factory HU harness didn't have lines for VSS and Reverse. This would be a 5+ if there was some info included about locating VSS and reverse or if metra had some sort or info about this on their website (or if Crutchfield would provide that info )

Needs crimps
Azerathis from Marin, ca on 12/18/2015

Having this adaptor mad installation of my new radio as easy as plugging it in which was great. Only problem I ran into was not having any wire crimps to connect this adaptor to my new radios harness. I instead soldered and heat shrunk tubing each connector and it was a little time consuming. The end result was great though and the wires were well labeled out of the package which was nice.
Pros: Plug in factory harness
Cons: No crimps to connect the wires

Couldn't be easier to wire your new radio into your exhisting harness. Only reason I gave it a 4 out of 5 is because one of the speaker leads kept falling off and I have to remove the radio twice to fix it. Small issue being a speaker lead but could possibly cause a fire if the hot wire came loose.
Pros: Easy color coded radio wiring for dummies
Cons: 1 Lead kept falling out of harness.

Great job for this kit!
Paul from Indiana on 4/27/2015
2001 Subaru Forester
Great job for this adapter kit! Not only is it color coded with clear instructions, but each wire has what it goes to printed on it as well. That helps out a lot for someone like me who has red-green color deficiency. I don't care for crimping wires, I much prefer solder and shrink tubing, so putting this together with the connector for the radio was the longest part of the installation - but, this was one of the easiest car stereo installs I ever did.
Pros: Wires are printed with what they go to in addition to being color-coded. Clear, easy to understand instructions.
Cons: None.

Loose pins required 2nd installation attempt
sturmeyhack from Seattle, WA on 7/31/2014
2002 Subaru Outback
Not too impressed. Was installing this into a 2002 Subaru Outback. The individual wires are well labeled and the insulation on each wire is pre-cut for splicing to the HU's connector wires, and soldering up the harness was pretty easy. However, the connector shell on mine looked like it was either made of cheap plastic or came out of a worn-out mold. After I installed my new HU, I discovered that one of the speaker channels wasn't working, and I had to disassemble everything to check on the problem. Turned out the pins on the Metra connector weren't all lining up correctly with the slots in the factory connector, pushing one or two of the connector pins out the back of the Metra socket and causing a short. At least the problem was obvious--no shorts in the solder joints between the Metra harness and the HU harness--and I was able to push the pin back into the plastic housing and hold the adaptor harness by the wires as I plugged it into the factory connector. After that, everything worked fine. So the Metra kit gets points for ease of soldering and for working with the factory harness; points off for making me install the HU twice to fix a short circuit due to bad assembly.
Pros: Consistent color-coding along with good labeling of individual wires makes soldering/splicing to the aftermarket HU wiring harness pretty straightforward. Hooray for industry standards! Once I figured out what went wrong, installation was straightforward and the new stereo works great.
Cons: Problems either in harness assembly or plastic casting resulted in loose pins in the connector, causing a short-circuit.

Pros: works fine, instructions could have been more clear

Worked perfect. Double check the wiring diagrams for both the harness and your receiver to make sure the colors match (mine did) and it's easy as pie!
Pros: I like that the wire sheaths were pre-scored, I just had to pull them off. Further, the two wires that were not needed for my installation (power antenna lead and steering wheel controls) were already capped off so I didn't have to mess with them.
Cons: None.

Does the job!
achmafooma from South Riding, VA on 5/24/2013
2008 Subaru Outback
The wiring harness does the job and does it well. My one small complaint is that the diagram/instructions should be clearer about the 'automatic antenna' wire. My car (2008 Subaru Outback) doesn't have an automatic antenna, so I didn't bother connecting it. As a result, my radio reception was terrible! Turns out that Subaru has an antenna booster that runs off the 'automatic antenna' lead, so you DO need to connect it to the appropriate wire on your unit's wire harness. On mine, it was some sort of vaguely defined accessory connector (and it mentioned 'automatic antenna' in the small print as something you might connect to it). After I made the connection, everything worked great. Recommend clarifying this in the instructions; the blue wire isn't necessarily for automatic antennas only, and MUST be connected [at least on my Subaru] if you want good radio reception.
Pros: Works fine, does the job, easy to hook up.
Cons: Instructions should be clearer about the 'automatic antenna' (which is actually an antenna booster on my 2008 Outback) and needs to be connected even if you don't have an automatic antenna.

I purchased this from Crutchfield and chose to get a head unit from somewhere else. In the package from Crutchfield, a full picture-laden highly-descriptive instruction booklet accompanied the harness. These instructions were not only for taking the dash panel off for the radio installation, but also for all the speakers in the car. Over and above the call of duty for a 12-dollar harness. I will not hesitate to pay the extra price for my next unit because of such excellent attention to detail.
Pros: Easy-to-read instruction booklet. Harness is a perfect fit. Pre-stripped tips are brilliant.
Cons: It didn't include a briefcase full of cash.

I, too, had trouble after connecting the harness with any reception. FM was bad, AM none. Checked out continuity on antenna connector and found center wire had none. Cut off OE connector and spliced onto the supplied antenna adapter. Still nothing, other than a lot of extra work and removing the radio again. Called tech, they were very helpful and knowledgeable. As others have posted, was told to connect the blue wire to the blue and white lead. Pulled out the new radio, again. Did so and works great. Why doesn't the instructions point out the importance of this for the Subaru? (I guess Saab also) It could save a lot of frustration

Crutchfield harnesses
RJ from Chelsea, MI on 6/30/2012
I have self installed many aftermarket sound systems, and I have had a number of professionally done systems put in. Since I first discovered Crutchfield harnesses, I have always used them. The first time I took one to a professional installer, they wanted to know where I got it, and then they started ordering them for their use! I wouldn't consider installing an aftermarket sound system without one of these!!!!!
Pros: Makes installation SO-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O much easier!

Good system
Hoyt from Marshall NC on 6/14/2012
2008 Subaru Forester
When I first powered on the radio I could receive only four FM stations, but Bill at Crutchfield tech support took 10 seconds to tell me, "connect the blue wire on the adaptor to the blue wire with white stripe on the radio." That worked. Moral: don't give up before you call tech support. One suggestion: the wiring kit doesn't include crimp caps, so if you don't have any it's either a trip to town or solder the joints. Crutchfield should tell you this in the descriptive material on its website.

Convenient Wiring Harness

This wiring harness greatly simplified radio installation. I've done installs before where I had to create my own connections between after-market radio and the factory wiring. This handy product saves hours and hours of time from an otherwise painstaking process. Soldering to radio harness can be done in the home allowing for quick plug-in installation in the car. This alone makes shopping a Crutchfield worth every penny.

Vlad from Boston, MA on 4/13/2011

Works as intended. Wires were color-coded to my head unit, then after connected to HU harness, directly plugs to my Subaru Outback 2005. Don't forget to connect the blue wire as it is needed for antenna signal booster. Otherwise your reception will be poor. I like the pre-stripped wires. I wish the head unit harness had that too. This item is included with your car stereo install but I wish it came with crimp connectors. Crutchfield claims all that is needed for the job is included. Almost. You still have to buy crimp connectors (or something else to connect wires).

Antenna Power - NOT Power Antenna
Bryan from Massachusetts on 4/8/2011
2002 Subaru Forester
2002 Subaru forester: Fits perfectly. One comment - the blue line is labeled "power antenna". I didn't have a power antenna so I didn't connect it. Reception was HORRIBLE. I was just about to drill a hole in the roof for an nmo mount antenna. Then I realized the Subaru has an antenna amplifier. Connect the "power antenna" wire to a source of power (from receiver) and excellent reception. Second comment: There are wire butt connectors that have heat shrink tubing, and low temperature solder in them. Put the wire in those and just use a heat gun to shrink the tubing AND melt the solder. Couldn't be easier and makes a solid connection.

After finding a picture by picture display on how to remove my stereo online, the wiring harness made installation simple and painless. From undoing my first screw to putting the last one back in it took me 40 mins and I was going slow! I'm surprised!

Instruction omissions
John H from Penn Hills, PA on 10/11/2010
The instructions for installing the radio in a Forester omitted 2 items to gain access to the passenger side heater control cable. You must remove the glove box and side kick panel. The glove box hides 2 screws that secure the panel which must be removed to access the cable end. Also, if you are careful, you can install the radio with the heater control wires still attached as one of the connectors is very difficult to disengage. The wiring harness worked as it was intended. [Editor's Note: Our Research Team did not need to remove the glovebox and kick panel to access the heater control cable, although it may make it easier for a few people.]

Making installation super easy
StoutClimber from Pittsburgh, PA on 9/21/2010
2007 Subaru Forester
Got this to install a stereo into my Forester. I have big hands and was not looking forward to having to squeeze them into the dash to connect all the wires. This made installation super easy. Did all the connecting on the coffee table then just clicked it in to existing cable. This is also really nice if you plan on selling or upgrading in the next few years. You can just unplug the new stereo and plug the factory right back in to sell the car!

Great Harness, excellent instructions
JB from Huntsville, AL on 8/18/2010
2000 Subaru Outback
The harness worked great for a new Pioneer head unit replacing the Subaru factory radio (P120) in a 2000 Outback. All of the wires in the Crutchfield harness matched directly to the Pioneer harness wires (including color codes). The wires can be cut to length before soldering or crimping the two harnesses together, if it looks like the wire length will create a space/interference problem when mounted. The total length should be a minimum of 6" to allow access to make the final connection of the harnesses. The instructions on removing the factory radio were excellent, with the minor criticism that two Phillips-head "screwdrivers" are required. One needs a minimum 5" shank to remove the screws holding the radio, ventillatiion assembly in the dash mounting, The second screwdriver must be no more than 1.5" total length to remove the screws on the ashtray mounting. The screws are too-deeply set into the trim panel, and the ashtray too short, to angle a standard screwdriver to the screwws. I used a Phillips-head nub in a 1/4" socket and ratchet to get the ashtray screws out. A standard Phillips-head screwdriver will work on all the others.

The wiring harness that Crutchfield sent with my receiver made it easy to install. My only complaint is that a plastic connector should be installed in BOTH sides so that no soldiering or crimp connectors are need. Still a great product though!

Metra 70-8901 Receiver Wiring Harness
Steven from Bozeman, MT on 5/18/2010
2004 Subaru Legacy
Purchased this to install an Alpine CDE-102 in my 2004 Subaru Legacy and a couple of the wires ended up being in the wrong spot and cooked the deck. Called Crutchfield Tech Support and they said it was likely a mishap in the factory and the wires were put in the wrong spot and shipped me a new deck with a new wiring harness. I'm a first-time buyer from Crutchfield, but now plan on doing more business with them in the future! I would highly recommend buying one of these for installing your new radio, so much easier and cleaner than snipping factory wires.

Metra 70-8901 Receiver Wiring Harness
CarAudio from WA on 11/7/2009
2002 Subaru Impreza WRX
It plugs into my subaru WRX perfectly. Most of the wires has the same color code as the wires coming out of the receiver. After I connected this harness to the new receiver, I can unplug the factory receiver and plug in the new receiver. The only caution is, this harness plus the wires from the new receiver may drop down and interfere with the car's air vent control. So make sure they don't. If you are installing a new reciever in the WRX, you need this. If you don't, the only way you can install the receiver is to cut off the jack in the subaru and connect the wires directly to the receiver. This means you cannot easily remove the new receiver.

jim from wi on 2/15/2009
2006 Subaru Forester
This product is great!! Crutchfield, thank you for providing this option. I can't tell you how much easier the installation of the radio was by using this product. By making the connections to the harness in advance (I soldered my harness but it would work just as well with non-solder connections). I took out the old radio, plugged this harness into the OEM connector, and installed the new radio in less than an hour... 'way better than having to crawl around under the dash and figure out which wires are which... If you buy a new radio, you need this harness adapter as well. The instructions were simple and easy to follow. No complaints here!!

no dimmer
Christopher from Tucson, AZ on 1/29/2009
2005 Subaru Outback
Simple install, good directions. The Subaru wiring and the receiver both had connections for the dimmer function (controlled by headlights) but the wire harness did not connect this. The receiver also has a manual dimmer which works fine but... Three wires from the Subaru did not connect to anything in the harness, I would like to know what function they serve.

Easy to install, but why solder?
Don from Gainesville, FL on 1/19/2009
2006 Subaru Baja
It was very easy to mate up the wires from the receiver I bought (Sony MEXBT 2600) to this harness. I just wonder why it is necessary to solder these connections. Obviously Crutchfield is relying on the buyer's technical ability to match up wires and solder them (or butt-splice them) together. Why not sell a kit where all you need to do is crimp the plug pole onto the end of the wire and then slide it into the proper slot on the plug? Fanatics could still solder the wires to the poles if they wish, the rest of us would be finished in much less time than after 10 or 12 solders. You also do not end up with all that extra wire under the dash.

as many other users have stated, having pre-assembled this harness on the bench made the installation go much smoother. Only "down" side, as many other users have found, is that you lose the dimming functionality. Subaru does their dimming a little different, so even though we wired in the orange/white lead, the display still doesn't dim. A small issue, and not the fault of the harness, or of Crutchfield's. things like this harness and the free install sheet specific for my car are the reasons I got all my stereo equipment from Crutchfield!

Quick and Painless
David from Austin, TX on 8/22/2008
Like Erik mentioned, you can wire this adapter to your head unit outside of the car, like at a desk or your kitchen table, then take it to your car and plug it in. Ditto on the blue antenna power wire, it's a must to hook up. I've used these harnesses for other vehicles over the years, always top notch. The wires themselves are labeled which makes it extremely easy.

Connect the Blue Wire!
Erik from Fort Wayne, IN on 8/19/2008
2007 Subaru Impreza 2.5i
Someone else already mentioned this, but make sure you connect the blue wire. I didn't realize it had to be connected (no power antenna), but it needs to be connected to activate the antenna amplifier (on cars with in dash or windshield antennas). These harnesses make installation a breeze, wouldn't do it without one.

Wiring harness adapters rock!
riceye from Wisconsin on 8/18/2008
2005 Subaru Outback
These adapters really reduce installation problems. Just being able to make up all of the connections at your workbench, kitchen table - wherever - instead of the front seat of your car make them worthwhile. And using solder splices and heat shrink tubing instead of crimp splices will add longevity to your installation. Poor sound quality due to crimp splices will almost certainly crop up given enough time. Do it right, and you only have to do it once. With the 2005 Subaru harness that I assembled it was very important to use the power antenna (blue) wires, as the in-the-windshield antenna has an amplifier that needs to be powered up by this connection. Apparently, failure to connect these blue wires will result in poor reception in fringe areas.
