About the Axxess ASWC-1 Steering Wheel Control Adapter

Jon Paul

Keep your steering wheel audio controls

The ASWC-1 adapter from Axxess allows you to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to almost any brand of aftermarket stereo, including Alpine, Clarion, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, Sony, and more. (Note: your new stereo must have a 3.5mm steering wheel control or wired remote control input.)

Installation is a straightforward process. You usually have to connect a few wires to your factory wiring. In most cases, the adapter automatically recognizes the vehicle it's been connected to. If not, you can manually program the adapter for your vehicle by following a step-by-step process with LED confirmation. Some vehicles, like select Nissans, will require a load resistor (sold separately) to successfully interface with the ASWC-1 adapter. Once connected, the adapter's memory retains its programming even if battery power is interrupted. A USB slot allows you keep the ASWC-1 current when updates become available. Warranty: 1 year.

Installation Note: This adapter will not retain your vehicle's factory Bluetooth functionality. Please identify your vehicle or call an Advisor at 1-888-955-6000 to see if the ASWC-1 adapter is compatible with your vehicle.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to tap or splice into one to three wires in your vehicle at the radio location to connect this interface. If you're using a Metra Axxess OEM integration adapter to connect your new car stereo to your vehicle, then it most likely will have a prewired connector for this Axxess ASWC-1 adapter. In these cases, no additional wiring in required. Axxess does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

More details on the Axxess ASWC-1 Steering Wheel Control Adapter

The Axxess ASWC-1 Steering Wheel Control Adapter replaces these items:

Product Research

Features

Steering Wheel Control Interface: The Axxess ASWC-1 Steering Wheel Control Interface lets you retain your vehicle's OEM steering wheel controls when replacing the factory radio with an SWC-compatible aftermarket radio.

Wiring Advisory: You'll usually have to hardwire this adapter into your vehicle's wiring. In most vehicles, the factory radio plug does not have a wire dedicated to the steering wheel audio controls, so splicing & soldering is often required. Metra does provide custom wiring instructions for all confirmed compatible vehicles on their website.

Compatibility: The Axxess Steering Wheel Control Interface is universal and can be used in most vehicles with factory steering wheel controls. The Axxess ASWC-1 supports the following aftermarket head unit manufacturers - Alpine, Boss, Clarion, Dual/Axxera, Kenwood, JVC, Jensen, Pioneer, and Sony.

Note: Please enter your vehicle information to confirm compatibility.

Programming: The ASWC-1 can be programmed in one of 3 ways:

  • Flashing the Module: The interface can be "flashed" using a Windows computer and a USB cable (not included) to update the firmware and program the steering wheel buttons.
  • Auto Detection: The Axxess Steering Wheel Control Interface has the ability to auto-detect certain vehicles and aftermarket radios. It will preset the steering wheel controls to the aftermarket radio automatically, so no programming is required.
  • Manual Programming: If your vehicle is not auto-detection compatible, you can still manually program the ASWC-1 to your vehicle's factory steering wheel controls and aftermarket head unit.

Reconfiguring Controls: If desired, the ASWC-1 can be manually programmed so you can make your vehicle's steering wheel controls function the way you want them to. You can also assign a secondary press & hold feature to the buttons. Limited only by the functions of the aftermarket radio.

LED Feedback: The steering wheel control interface features an integrated LED to indicate programming status.

Non-Volatile Memory: The Axxess ASWC-1 has a non-volatile memory, which means the steering wheel control interface will remember the programming even if the device is disconnected from your vehicle.

Q
Will this work 2014 ram 1500 and an android radio?
amos  Feb 14, 2024
1 answer
A
We cannot guarantee any compatibility with radios we do not carry, Amos. To see parts that are compatible with your specific trim 2014 Ram 1500, please enter your exact details into our online Vehicle Guide in the link below. For many models of Ram in 2014 an iDatalink ready radio and Maestro interface is required to retain key original vehicle features. https://www.crutchfield.com/m_266150/Car-Stereos.html

Q
Will this work with a Dual DCMPA71?
matthew  Sep 25, 2023
1 answer
A
The Dual DCPA71 does have a steering wheel control input, Matthew. This Axxess ASWC-1 does support Dual/Axxera radios and can be manually programmed if your vehicle is not auto-detection compatible.

Q
Could this be used to retain the rear seat controls in a 2004 Ford Excursion with the RES? If so would I need 2 separate units to adapt the rear controls and the steering wheel, or could I splice in splits to each of the separate controllers through 1 adapter?
colin  Sep 25, 2023
1 answer
A
The ASWC-1 is designed to retain steering wheel controls in compatible vehicles. It is not designed for retaining rear seat controls. Additionally, we do not have the means to retain the RES in your vehicle. Based on our research and the parts we have available, the rear entertainment system will be lost if the radio is replaced.

Q
What is the difference between this (the ASWC-1) and the AXSWC from Axxcess?
john  Apr 11, 2023
1 answer
A
I would be happy to assist, John. This ASWC-1 steering wheel control adapter is used to pair many radios we sell to specific vehicle installs to retain steering wheel controls. The AXSWC is a different model steering wheel controller that may be used in different applications and is available at other retailers. We love the ASWC-1 because it is reliable, and works in many different applications! If you use our handy Vehicle Guide in the link below to build your radio package, the ASWC-1 may come up as it is one of our most popular options. I hope this helps! https://www.crutchfield.com/m_266150/Car-Stereos.html

Q
For an old vehicle, can we add a universal steering wheel remote control to a boss head unit that only has a single SWC wire?
paul  Apr 03, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings Paul, and thank you for your question. The Axxess ASWC-1 has a manual programming mode. As long as the Boss stereo is capable of steering wheel controls, and has the input, or input wire, the ASWC-1 can be programmed to control it.

Will this adapter work with a 2007 F150 (Audiophile System), and a Sony AX8000?
denny  Mar 27, 2023

Thank you for your question, Dennis! The Sony XAV-AX8000 is compatible with most factory steering wheel control adapters. To best determine what interface harness and steering wheel control adapter is needed for your F-150 give one of our amazing Advisors a call at 1.800.324.9695. They will be able to qualify your truck and build a cart with the install gear that will work for your project.

Q
Does this work with a dual xdcpa10bt head unit?
keegan  Mar 06, 2023
1 answer
A
I would be happy to help, Keegan. The Dual XDCPA10BT does have a steering wheel control input on the rear. The Axxess ASWC-1 Steering Wheel Control Adapter does have a setting for Dual radios, as well as an auto-detection mode that can be used with some vehicles and aftermarket radios. We cannot guarantee functionality with radios that we do not sell sadly, but all signs point to this controller potentially working with your radio. Any items that do not work or are simply not used can be returned within 60-days for a refund, so you're covered there!

Q
I have a dual xvm286bt. Will this harness work with it?
ben  Dec 24, 2022
1 answer
A
Based on the information in the owner's manual of that receiver, it will not work with steering wheel radio control interfaces. Not this one or any others as this Dual receiver does not have the ability to work with them. We offer radios that can work with these interfaces and advisors that can be reached by calling 1-800-324-9695 to get a personal recommendation on a new radio with all the abilities you seek.

We have not tested the ASWC-1 with the Boss BV9358B (we do not carry this model). However, Boss's website does recommend this adapter for the radio.

Q
Using this with an aftermarket wireless steering wheel control system that has a receiver box. Per the (confusing) instructions, I wired that directly to my receiver, power, and ground. It doesn't seem to work. Do I need this also? Do I need something different? - Chevy Spark 2015 (3rd party controls), Kenwood DDX6706S. Thank You!
jordan  Dec 07, 2022
1 answer
A
It sounds like you are talking about this kit in the link below, the Axxess RFASWC universal kit Jordan. IF so, you do not need something like the ASWC-1, you would only need the RFASWC control kit and a radio that supports steering wheel controls. The Kenwood DDX6706S does show support. If you have it wired correctly try these steps in this order, we show in our info they were printed out of order on page 5 in the instructions for this exact Axxess RFASWC. Try this order: 1.Turn the ignition on and press Volume Up on the RFASWC. This will "marry" the RFASWC to the interface. 2.Turn the ignition on; the LED on the RFASWC interface will start flashing rapidly, which means the RFASWC is looking for the radio. 3.Press and hold volume up as soon as the flashing LEDs begin Also pay attention to this note in the instructions about newer Kenwood radios: Some of the newer Kenwood radios will auto detect as a JVC. If this is the case, either (a) use the included 12k ohm resistor in-line between the Blue/Yellow and Brown wire of the female 3.5mm jack only during programming (once programmed remove the resistor) or (b) you can manually set the radio type, refer to the Changing Radio Type. I hope this helps! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_120RFASWC/Axxess-RFASWC-Universal-Steering-Wheel-Controls-Package.html

Q
Will this unit work with my Boss BCPA9685RC?
stan  Nov 10, 2022
1 answer
A
When this model Boss radio first came out it was not compatible with the Axxess ASWC-1 Steering Wheel Control Adapter however, since then Axxess has now made this adapter compatible with Boss radios. We did not get a chance to test this out on that particular Boss when we carried it so I can't guarantee that it will work, but it most likely will work. If you would like to give this adapter a try, we do have a 60 day money back guarantee on all products we carry.

I've had this installed for about 5 months. Lately, none of the steering wheel controls will work randomly. Sometimes if I turn of vehicle and turn back on, they will start working again. I checked for loose wiring. Is this beginning to fail, or Should I look for a different possibility? Hooked up to a 2012 Nissan Frontier and Alpine IXL-407.

I have no idea. Have you contacted the AXXESS people? If you follow their instructions, you shouldn't have to re-program the unit every time you shut down your vehicle and re-start it. Having to do that would completely negate the usefulness of the ASWC-1 unit.

Hi. I would like to know it this works on my Mazda MX5 2006 with Bose system? The aftermarket player is a Kenwood DDX-4018BT. Thank you.
lucian  Feb 26, 2020

This interface will work in your vehicle and with Kenwood radios that have an input for these adapters. Given what I found on Kenwood's site about your radio, it has that input and so that means this will work!

Why does crutchfield says this will not work with my nissan frontier 2019 when the manufacturer site says it will work?
luis  Dec 09, 2019

I don't know the official reason as to why we are not showing it as working in all the versions of the 2019 Frontier, but I have notified my research department of what Metra currently shows on their site. We will check on this and update our site if it truly can work.

Yes it will with the correct SWC interface that is programmed to your vehicle specifically.
bradley  Apr 13, 2019

I'm not sure, my Miata just has a mode button and a volume button on the steering controls. The mode button works, but sometimes it cycles into ATT ON, which isn't even a mode, and then it's hard to get it to cycle back into the correct mode again. The volume up and down seems to work too, but it gets loud too quickly when you hold down the button. I was never very happy with the adapter and just ended up using the controls on the HU instead, but these issues could be the result of the way I wired it up.
john  Apr 08, 2019
A
Sorry Shane - not sure what the info button is. On my 2005 Dodge Ram it controlled volume, changing tracks and going forward and back on those tracks. Also start, pause and stop of CDs. For radio it allowed all the controls that were on the radio itself: changing and identifying the stations, albums and singers, changing from AM to FM abs going to favorites on both. All of these activities were reflected on the radio display. Basically, every function that was on the backside of the OEM steering wheel. Hope this helps.

It's definitely NOT plug and play, BUT, super easy to install. I was intimidated at first, then read the instructions a couple times and went step by step and it wasn't bad at all. If you got the part number after putting in your year, make, and model, it should work. Remember, if you ever have any issues, you can call Crutchfield's tech line.

Yes, If it dose not work at first, you will need to push the program button next to the L.E.D light, with the radio turend on and the light will stay green and you are set to go. . . . .

How do I open the cover? I can't seem to get it open. And what wire is needed to connect it to an android phone after the cover is open? (micro USB slot phone)
richard  Jul 03, 2016

A
Hi Richard. This is merely a system to make your existing steering wheel audio controls work with your new deck. You don't need to open the cover, you just need to plug the wiring harness into the AWC-1 and then wire it in behind your new stereo deck. Also you don't want to plug your phone into this, your phone will be plugged most likely into the USB slot on your new stereo.

This will not control anything on a Nexus tablet without some additional hardware and software to run on the Nexus. This is really designed for aftermarket stereo units, and doesn't really help or enable those that want to use a tablet as a car stereo head unit.

I installed this adapter with a Pioneer AVH-280BT DVD receiver on a 2008 Mitsubishi outlander. The steering wheel controls work except as follows: when playing a cd/mp3 disk, the next/back cause the AHV=280BT DVD receiver to go into fast forward/rewind mode for a few seconds then an error code appears. The phone controls work to answer/hang up a call but the call initiate control is not operable. I called tech support and reset the adapter numerous times but the problem was not resolved. I hate to give you a "have you tried this?" answer, but I had some initial trouble getting this unit to work as well. In my case it was flaky overall, and the flakiness turned out to be sensitivity to poor grounding. The best I can do is suggest you try a different source of ground and ensure a good quality ground connection. TBH, the error code issue sounds like a protocol or software timing issue rather than a simple connection problem but that's the best I can do.

The harness adapter that comes with your specific model Axxess will match your OEM connector -- however -- there are more than just a few wires to splice. You must splice all the radios harness wires to the Axxess wire harness, then tap into your OEM radio data line so the SWC can communicate with whatever radio you purchased. If you do not have the skills for this, suggest you contact a qualified professional.

It's been a few weeks but yes you do have to splice a wire or two. Was a very easy install and it works great. Would recommend it product.

This was a much easier install than I thought it would be. Easy step by step directions allowed me to put this in my Camry with a Sony head unit in about 15 minutes. The hardest part was making connections to the supplied car-specific plug. Once installed our was plug and play on the steering wheel controls.

It fits as is on a 2005 infiniti g35x. No splicing needed. Works perfectly as well.

You have to wire by splicing into you radio/factory harness or use t connectors. Easy to install and program once you figure out the wire color code. And programming on what brand headunit you have my Kenwood dnx890hd was simple. Just remember you have to ground you stock radio harness, aftermarket radio harness and aswc-1 ground to the same ground!!! That's the only issue I had. Goodlook! Product work like oem in my 2010 Altima coupe.
