Worth the Money!!

I've used the smaller kit that utilizes the factory tombstone several times, and was not very impressed. I came across this unit when looking for a new tombstone, and couldn't find very much information on it, but decided to give it a try. Unit arrived well packed in a timely manner, and I am very impressed. Texture is very close to OEM! Fits great against the center console, vents, pop-up switch, and hvac panel. The only place it doesn't fit 100 percent is on the front pad of the dash at the top (pictured), but that could just be a 30 year old dash beginning to warp a little. Radio install was a breeze, Crutchfield sends all the necessary accessories, and detailed instructions. No cutting/trimming was needed, just had to take it in and out a few times to adjust the head unit position. I'm very please, and would recommend this to anyone installing a radio in their Miata!!
Pros: Fitment, ease of installation
Cons: Price? Well worth it IMO, you get what you pay for

Disappointed
Vincent from Pasadena, CA on 2/21/2023
It is okay, a little disappointed , the 2 brackets to hold the DDIN are great, but the outer frame to fill the front space should be texture like the tombstone, not gloss. Also I do not use the Metra tombstone because it is the same as the one from the stock. This Metra should sell as a whole kit for people want to replace the old broken tombstone, and it should have an option to choose not including the tombstone.
Pros:
Cons: Obsolete parts, why do I need to buy the whole kit if I need only 2 parts. Not recommended to my Miata friends

The only reason this is not 5/5 for me is the metal retainer clips halfway up the sides. Not real clear how to install them and if you have the plate on and off while setting up, the clips come off. I had to epoxy them onto the plastic post so they would actually hold the faceplate as intended. Besides that, this again is a perfect fit and really makes the unit look like an OEM product.

Metra DP-7528 Dash Kit

The Metra DP-7528 was a good solution to update the Miata's radio, offering a double Din installation. Since it replaces the tombstone, I was mostly concerned about the appearance; it matches the interior better than my slightly faded original. The thickness of the plastic is less but didn't create any issues. The side mounting plates for the radio are plastic, but after installation it is plenty strong. With my radio, none of the Boss holes aligned with the side plate, so I needed to drill my own. Not a big deal, just measured and got close, then adjusted from there. Installation Tips: =>The headlight - hazard switch assembly mounting uses smaller screws that come with the kit; don't reuse the originals. The plastic posts that receive the screws are smaller than the original posts. => I'd suggest not installing the two metal clips until you are done with the trial radio fittings. You'll need to remove the tombstone a few times to tweak the radio depth. Otherwise you'll fight the clips pulling it on / off like I did. I originally was reluctant to remove the original radio, as I like the look. But, when I bought the vehicle is was meant to be a retro looking vehicle yet came with a modern radio for the times. So it's still the same idea!

A 21st century solution for our 1991 Miata
Ken from RENTON, WA on 12/4/2022
1991 Mazda Miata
Until now the install kits for after market systems that Crutchfield offered for the early Miata were disappointing. This Dash Kit brings your early Miata into the 21st century, allowing your modern audio/video unit to look like a factory integrated unit. No more loose fitting, "add-on" looking after market solutions.
Pros: Worthy of the classic 1st gen Miata. Matches well with original interior. Allows for sleek and secure installation of standard double din modern units.
Cons: **STOP** READ the instructions!!!! For some unknown reason the mounting post for the Flasher/Head Light buttons are smaller in diameter than the original, requiring a smaller screw.(supplied) So if you try to use the original screws you will break the mounting post.
