Didn't do its intended job
Jay from ORANGE, TX on 3/27/2023
Received it and had to pry it open. It's an identical design as another one I already have. Thought, "I'll get a new one so that it cuts better." Well, I couldn't trim the wire length with these. My old one was better. The quality control is definitely lacking here.
Pros: Wire stripper worked Crimper worked
Cons: Came fused shut the wire cutter is too dull to cut wire. Obvious lack of quality control

Very cheap tool. Maybe not for more then a few projects with it. They are harder to use then most of the other crimping tools I've used.
Pros: Very low cost and simple enough to learn how to use.
Cons: Hard to open and close. The caps are difficult to line up with the head of the tool.

No Bueno
Rob from Bitburg, DE on 8/13/2018
The tool is too stiff because the paint/powder coating is too thick. I worked them back and forth for a couple minutes to be able to open them, but it is still too cumbersome. The wire stripping feature is difficult to use because there isn't really an edge to cut into the sheath. You more or less smash down as hard as you can and tear the sheathing off. I should have read the reviews.
Pros: I only lost this much
Cons: Paint doesn't allow tool to open and close smoothly. Wire stripper doesn't have an edge to allow it to cut into sheathing.

Too Stiff, Poor Construction.
Zakkary from Clermont, FL on 5/17/2018
Too stiff, poor construction. Wire stripping with this tool is very hard for small wires because the two sides of the tool do not fully come into contact with each other.
Pros: Wire cutter works
Cons: Can not strip wires, is very stiff and hard to open/close

poor design and bad build
Jack from San Francisco, CA on 10/1/2017
Almost impossible to open and close with one hand. Very stiff . Wire cutter location defeats the advantage of leverage. I used it with 12 gauge speaker wire and no way could it cut the wire. My kitchen shears were far more useful. Strips wire well if you can get i to close using two hand and hold the wire in the right little slot for the gauge at the same time. No way could my wife ever use these.
Pros: price
Cons: impossible to use with one hand, does not work for cutting thicker gauge speaker wire.

Metra Crimp Tool Set
Kelcie from Ely, MN on 7/30/2017
Today was my first time installing car speakers into my vehicle, to which this tool came in handy (along with the caps). The caps did their job well. The tool, however, slowed down the process a little. It was sharp but could have been sharper. It was a little difficult to open and close, I had to use my teeth a few times when my hands were semi full. The fact that was difficult to close open and close also made it tricky to line the wires up, resulting in having to do a very small amount of extra work due to severing a site by mistake (moved up a few centimeters and cut again). I went through extra caps because when the tool closed it would sometimes crack a few caps. Overall, the installation went well and this tool did help. It wasn't the worst but it wasn't necessarily THE best either.

Crimp caps OK, crimp tool ??
Crutchfield customer from San Diego, CA on 6/4/2017
I will give 5 stars on the crimp caps, they do what they are suppose to do. I gave 3 stars on the crimp tool because it is not sharp enough to cut the wires and insulation but after sharpening it worked fine. The insulation on the handle always comes off when I was pulling the insulation from the wires.

I was able to cut wires from my Metra wiring harness and strip them using this tool. The stripping part wasn't super effective compared to my dad's old tool that he had in his tool box, but it did the job. In the future I'll buy a nicer tool that can perform more tasks once I do a bigger car audio install. This worked fine for my small project but if you are doing a lot of work you'll want something nicer.

Hard to use
Andy from Plymouth, MI on 9/13/2016
This tool is too hard to use, your hands will get a real work out. Had it not been for the crimps, I wouldn't advise to get this, unless you are really desperate for such a tool. Do yourself a favor and spend a little more and buy a better crimping tool.
Pros: - Cheap - Comes with crimps
Cons: - Hard to use, limited utility.

Good for simple jobs
Karl from Corpus Christi, TX on 5/18/2016
It did pretty will for my simple install, I don't think this is the quality needed for more serious jobs or for the Audio Enthusiast that is constantly making changes/upgrades to their system. But for a regular guy like me that needed it for a one hour install and probably won't use it many more times, this works just pretty well and has a low price.
Pros: Cheap price
Cons: Cheap build quality.

Works sorta. Cheap.
Trev from Boston, MA on 1/16/2016
I wish I had sucked it up and gone to a hardware store to spend money on a real pair of wire strippers. A bit more money but then at least I'd have a quality tool in my toolbox for a lifetime. These barely work. I ended up doing most of the wire stripping on my speaker install with a utility knife because it was easier than using these.
Pros: Cheap.
Cons: Bad handle - it's just a flat piece of metal with a dip on the handle. This combined with a stiff hinge that sticks makes it so you really have to give it some muscle to work. The cutters and strip notches were also quite dull. These are more of a toy than a tool.

Basic crimper
JerryD from Washington on 1/3/2016
This crimper is very basic and can do the job if you are careful. The crimp caps have a very narrow metal band and it tends to slip when when you crimp down on it. I used 50% more caps than I had wires to crimp due to the smoothness of the crimper itself.
Pros: price included crimp caps
Cons: workmanship of the crimper Design of the crimper design of crimp caps

Average tool, crappy caps
Vanessa from Texas on 12/2/2015
The tool definitely got the job done, although maneuvering the thing was a tad difficult since it was so stiff. The crimp caps on the otherhand were flat out terrible (some caps were even missing the metal crimp piece in them!). Would recommend buying more reliable caps - you're essentially just paying for the tool here.
Pros: Multifunction tool
Cons: Stiff to work with, poor quality caps

The tool was really stiff to use (I've got weak, lady wrists haha) but it did the job. Got it cause I needed the tool and didn't need to purchase 100 crimp caps. The caps were fine, to be honest I had never crimped before, but my new car stereo works so they do the job!
Pros: Caps included, just enough caps
Cons: Tight, stiff

Sam W. from Texas on 8/31/2015

Great crimper, not quite so good wire stripper
Ian from California on 4/12/2015
Like others have said, it's a bit stiff to operate, but it's not a dealbreaker. The crimp tool worked just fine. The wire stripper functionality doesn't accommodate 20 gauge wires, so I had to get a separate wire stripper when installing my stereo. I bought this for the sake of having both tools in one, but it didn't work out. Be sure to check how big your wires are if you're planning on using this. If they're 18 gauge or larger, this would be a pretty good deal, especially as it also includes a set of crimp caps so you're really getting three products in one.
Pros: Dual functionality, included crimp caps.
Cons: Limited range on wire stripper, stiff operation.

A bit stiff, but does the trick
Matt from New Jersey on 12/7/2014
There's not too much to be said about this crimping/stripping tool. For the cost, it does the trick. But don't expect a premium, comfortable experience.
Pros: Wire stripping and cutting is aligned fairly well
Cons: Grip padding is too hard Requires too much force to open/close (made worse by the minimally padded grip)

For less than 10 bucks, it does the job.
MikeS from Kingston, WA on 7/31/2014
For less than 10 bucks, this tool does the job, but probably only good for 1 or 2 more installs. The stripper starts to get a bit dull after doing one harness, and my hands were hurting a bit because the handles are so thin.
Pros: Inexpensive. Better to use the crimps than just electrical tape and twisted wires.
Cons: Thin handles with little padding can fatigue your hands if they're old and achy like mine. Tool is not made from the hardest steel in the world and stripper seems to dull quickly.

Easy to use (esp. after WD-40)
AlexC from San Antonio on 5/11/2014
As others have noted, opening and closing the tool requires a bit of force. I followed the suggestion others made and used a bit of WD-40 to the tool's rivets, which made it much easier to use. The yellow plastic on the handles isn't the best but I was fine with it since I'm not using this tool all the time.

Keep your Crimp hand strong!
eROCK from Chicago, IL on 5/9/2014
This tool does what it says. It has a wire stripper that works fine, and a crimper that crimps fine. This tool came with a set of 20 or so Crimp caps. Just enough for your basic install. All of the other reviews here are correct. The handles are very stiff, and you have to use both hands to pull them apart. I'm sure over time it will loosen up.
Pros: Works as advertised.
Cons: Difficult to pull the handles apart.

Too tight
JVH from Santa Monica, CA on 2/11/2014
The crimper itself is either excessively painted (black) or is too tight, unmovable with one hand. You have to use both hands to practically pry the crimper open.
Pros: crimps well, if you have the hand strength
Cons: Not fluid, especially for when needing to use one hand on wires and one hand one crimper.

You get what you pay for with these. As others have stated they are a pain to open and close. Requires a lot of extra effort. That being said, once you get past that, they do the job fairly well. I've only used them for cutting and stripping insulation, and haven't had any issues doing either.
Pros: - Cheap enough that you won't be upset if you lose it... or throw it away. - Does what it is supposed to
Cons: - nearly impossible to open/close - cheap construction

Tool wasn't the greatest, but it does the job. You have to PULL it to the open position and use your man strength to clamp the connections.
Pros: Does the job Strips jacket off of wire without tearing copper threads It was free I didn't have ANY bad connections
Cons: I did it all without thinking about it, but you might be better off than I was if you hit the joints with wd-40 and loosen it up a bit.

I bought this set for my first headunit install. I spent about 20 minutes using this to connect my wires. The crimp tool was stiff, and took two hands to open for each crimp or cut. It was very hard to get a good crimp because the narrow handles really hurt my hands when I pressed down. I woke up the next morning with a bruise on my palm, and a sore hand. I think I will go to a local store and spend a little more on a tool with better handles. The crimp caps worked just fine, and I had plenty left over for any mistakes or future projects.
