Three-stage charging

The HF1208 Intellicharger uses three distinct charging stages. In the first stage, the current is fixed and the voltage is allowed to float – this stage restores 80% of the battery's capacity. Once the battery's cell voltage is up to the correct level, the second "absorption" stage engages, allowing the voltage to remain fixed while the current is allowed to float. The battery is brought to 100% during this stage and the cells are equalized. The third stage is “Float” charging, which reduces the voltage and current to a level that will maintain the battery indefinitely. Handy LED indicators show power on, charging, and fully charged status.

More details on the XS Power HF1208 IntelliCharger

Product Research

Features

Overview: The XS Power HF1208 is an advanced battery charger designed specifically for high performance 12V sealed lead-acid batteries. The charger combines the reliability of a high frequency MOSFET rectified unit with an advanced microprocessor to create a battery charger that can rapidly and safely recharge 12V maintenance free, deep cycle, gel-cell, and AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries in several sizes. The HF1208 can provide 8 amps of output current for charging.

Three Stage Charging: The HF1208 charges is three stages. The first stage, called "Bulk" charging, the current is fixed and the voltage is allowed to float. During this stage, 80% of the battery's capacity is restored. When the battery's cell voltage is up to the correct level, the second stage called "Absorption" charging is engaged. During this stage, the voltage is fixed and the current is allowed to float. The battery is brought to 100% during this stage and the cells are equalized. The third stage is "Float" charging. During this stage the voltage and current are reduced to a level that will maintain the battery. The whole charging process is microprocessor controlled for accuracy.

Overcharging: Lead-acid batteries have different charging requirements based on their design. Overcharging will reduce the life of any battery, but sealed valve-regulated batteries are especially sensitive to high charging voltages and overcharging. Overcharging and AGM or gel-cell battery will cause permanent damage.

Voltage Monitoring: The battery's terminal voltage is measured every five minutes by the on-board microprocessor and the information is then analyzed, along with the elapsed, time to dynamically control the battery charger for optimum charging performance.

Battery Analysis: When the battery is connected, the microprocessor will analyze it's voltage and if its below 4 volts, the charger won't begin charging. Likewise, if the battery doesn't come up to the correct voltage in a 10 hour period, the microprocessor will automatically shut down the charger.

Cooling: The HF1208 has an internal cooling fan that automatically operates during charging, keeping the internal components at a constant safe temperature.

Status LEDs: The HF1208 includes 2 LED indicators:

  • Power LED: This illuminates red when the power cord is plugged in and the power switch is turned on.
  • Charging LED: This illuminates orange or red when in charge mode and changes to green when battery charging is in the final stage. During this final stage, a minimum of 1 hour is required, however 24 hours is recommended for 100% charge.

Fuses: The HF1208 is protected by 2 fuses, a 6.3 amp fuse installed on the AC power input side of the charger, and by a 15 amp fuse installed on the output side. Two additional 15 amp fuses are also provided.

Q
The 1208 does not have a power switch, this may be a dumb question but Iâ??m new to the xs power / agm battery world - should I plug the charger in first, or hook leads to the battery first since thereâ??s no on/off switch?

A
Greetings Bob, and thank you for your question. The HF1208 should have a power on/off switch on the back. The process is as follows, turn switch to off, plug it into a household electrical outlet, connect the positive and negative leads to the battery, turn the switch to on.

Q
Will this work properly in a dual battery set up? I have an XS under the hood and another in the trunk for car audio

A
Greetings Greg, excellent question. I reached out to the fine people at XS Power, they said it would have zero issues, and you would not have to disconnect anything, Keep both batteries connected, and plug the charger into the main battery.

Q
Can you leave everything attached while charging?

A
It is not necessary to disconnect the battery while charging.

Q
Do you have to have a special agm charger to charge a D2400 XS battery? Here is what you are not being told. If your vehicle has a draw that allows a voltage drop below 6 volts and you must recharge the XS battery you will need another battery to recharge the XS to be hooked up in conjunction with the XS battery to trick the XS into charging. Do not let your XS battery drain under 6 volts. If you decide to recharge after the battery has drained to under 6 volts you may need a agm charger that is set to 8 amps or perhaps 15 amp boost to get the battery fully charged. My agm charger which wasn't the XS brand needed a additional battery hooked in series to force the charger work correctly. People who purchase this battery need to know that they may need a specific charger to recharge the battery. Bear in mind that these batteries are two or 3 times heavier than a standard battery. Shipping it back to the manufacturer to get it repaired or charged will cost you at least half the cost of the battery. This will mean a whopping 200.00 or more dollars in shipping cost (regardless of the warranty which would be useless at this point). XS batteries are exceptional batteries other wise!

Greetings Danny, and thank you for your question, and comments. Due to the fact XS Power recommends charging with an AGM compatible intelligent charger, that is what we stand with as well. After all they are the manufactures, and improper charging can void the warranty, cause the casing to swell, at that point we would not accept a return on the battery.

Q
Can I charge sb 500 super cap with this charger?
steve79  Mar 24, 2022

A
There is no mention about this working to charge capacitors in the owner's manual and should not be used to charge yours. Typically, those are wired into a system and charged using the power wiring along with an included resister/bulb.
